    Chris, thanks for the great videos. It has really helped me understand the differences between all the available LED light options. I'm going to have a go at putting together a project for a night club using 130 meters of WS2815 on four separate circuits. I'm curious if you've done any side by side comparisons of the available controller units from BTF Lighting. I really like the results you're getting with WLED with the ESP32 project boards, but by the time I make these commercially usable and put them in project boxes, it's going to be more trouble than buying the off the shelf controller complete with their remote controls.

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for watching and wow what an epic project you are taking on! I really wish I had more experience with larger installs and other controllers. My guess is for something that big you would want to go with something else. Here is some information on what WLED recomends from an led perspective: kno.wled.ge/features/multi-strip/#:~:text=For%20good%20performance%2C%20you%20can,a%20total%20of%204000%20LEDs.
      Hopefully at some point down the road I will be more knowledgeable and can help out better with questions like this. But I would love to know what you end up going with if you have time to share down the road!

    I finally got this working thank you so much for a great video! I had so much pain as ESP32 boards come in different varieties, but i worked out that simply changing the GPIO pin within WLED done the trick! Just an additional question but when you are displaying what appears to be two sets of LED strips, are these connected to the same controller and in series? Now i have this first stage working with 2 LED strips in parallel, my next stage is to extend to 30m around garden for new year light show! Trying to work out if i'm best having separate controllers or just connect the full 30m with any additional voltage...Not sure if anyone can advise on how i progress from here?

  • @laffytaffykidd

    Great video, Chris! I have a question regarding your 12V/5A = 60W power supply recommendation.
    According to the specifications, a 5M WS2815 LED Strip will take 90W to power (probably at full white with no degradation).
    If we consider 20% higher (90W *1.2), it will be 108W.
    Does this theoretically mean we should be using a minimum of a 120W power supply? That is twice as much as what you're recommending.
    Am I understanding this correctly?

    • @mattwilson9293
      @mattwilson9293 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I just installed exactly 5m of this WS2815 strip (144 LED/m) around my walk in shower. Yes, it's a rather big shower.
      Using WLED to limit power to 2.5amps, this is more than adequate for powering 5 meters. Remember, this is with me using 144led/m strips.
      Any higher than 4 amps and it becomes offensively bright on all colors, especially white.
      You dont NEED a 12v10a power supply, but it won't necessarily hurt anything as long as you don't let it try to pump 10amps all the time.

    Hang on... how are you powering a 5 meter strip of 60 LED/meter WS2815 lights with a 12v 5A power supply? The BTF websites specs say that each led draws 0.3 watts of power and on a 5 meter strip thats 300 x 0.3 = 90 watts. Am I missing something? Are those actually 30 LED/meter? I'm trying to connect four of these together in parellel and power them accordingly but now I'm worried my wattage is way to the high with the power supply I have in mind.

    • @alunjones3860
      @alunjones3860 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChrisMaherDIY I don't see how they could make 24V strips with individually addressable LEDs. The LEDs are 3V each, so for 24V, six are wired in series, leaving 3V dropped across the resistor, or linear current regulator. I suppose they could pack 6 LED small chips per channel, into each RGB LED package, but that would make it more expensive and I've not seen it before.

    • @joireland
      @joireland 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ChrisMaherDIY You can get 720LED/M FCOB strips from BTF-Lighting that are 24V powered now. They are addressable down to 5cm lengths using WS2811 chips (5cm = 36LEDs). Each 5M strip would have 100 WS2811 chips to control each 5cm length of 36LEDs each (5cm is about 2 inches and 5M is about 16 feet).

    On the esp32 are you just plugging the +5v into the 5v pin and the gnd to the gnd pin. The same as you would when you would power it via the USB port and the +5v pin and gnd pin would be then connected to the LED strip?
    I only ask as I tried a 12v power supply using your directions, and it worked for a bit but then the esp32 overheated and the wifi module no longer works. So made me wonder if the pins on the esp32 are connected differently in this configuration.

    Hey Chris, I followed this tutorial to a T, the only difference is I am using a 100W 12V 8.33A power supply(The same one you used in your video but the more wattage version(The reason I am using such a high W power supply is because I plan on running 4 1m strips and connect them with some wires in between to have around ~4m worth of cable and ~4 meters of LEDS) and I wired everything up, and I have power to my ESP board. Still, the LED lights did not come on. I made sure all connections were correct, and I even tried doing the LED strips straight to the PSU, and still no power to the lights; any idea where I could have gone wrong?

    I need to put WRGB leds in a case letter (channel letters). I was thinking of using the ESP32.
    Once configured and programmed, the ESP32 can work Offline to make a certain sequence of colors and effects, it turns on (ON with a switch ) and the ESP32 starts working and carrying out the predefined routine itself. Or is there another better controller for this situation. Thanks

    Chris great awesome helpful videos. Do you recommend any one specific profile channel or LED brand to use on ceilings/walls for lighting used as main light source? Similar to what is show for more contemporary design layouts?
    How do you determine what brand and setup to use for different lighting use. I.e.
    1) Main light source
    2) Entertainment Audio/Video Around TV
    3) Gaming
    4) Bar area?
    5) General hallway ceilings/walls?
    6) Garage ceilings for more brighter lighting
    7) Stair case under stair tread lighting
    Also Govee seems to have a really user friendly package deal with products, power, and switch however if you need lighting for example threw out ceilings leading to one switch for on/off how do you setup this? Or another example would be having multiple LED strips on different ceiling/walls that leads to one power source and control source how would this be setup?
    Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

      Thanks so much for watching and that's a great question! Since i've never tried using led profiles/ lights for a main lighting source, i'm afraid I would just be guessing if I gave you any advice. I really do like govee but i'm not sure their led strips would be best for main lighting since the white color on the strips is not a dedicated white. My approach with everything is do a little online research, order what I think will be best, test it out and either keep it and use it because it looks nice, or return things, get my money back and try something else. I'm very much a trial and error type of guy so that's usually how I go about doing things. I also don't really have any experience yet on switches or trying to run power to main house supply. Hopefully someday I'll know a lot more answers to be more helpful!

Also if you install LED strip lights in different rooms do you use one (1) power source or controller? I like the Govee idea. But my fear is one I install the LED strip and something wacky goes wrong and requires repair or replacement I need to access the power adapter, or any other component controller or actual wiring how do I access these cut back into drywall?

    When I plug LED strip in to power supply the full reel illuminates. When I introduce ESP32 with WLED the strip behaves erratically. I’ve tried using the voltage adapter to power the ESP and also separate supply, both yield the same result.

    Hi there, super clear video. One questoon I have still is the following: I have exactly the same BTF ws2815 strip. I can't use WLED drivers unfortunately for my project (making a wordlclock) but i am familiar programming in arduino language myself. This leaves me with the following: my ESP32 MH-ET-LIVE board has - i think - 3.33V data out at IO33 (but i think at all data outputs to be honest) even though i drive it with step down 5V like you do.
    I have read that the 3.3V data signal would not be enough for the WS2815 strip to take it in, and that i need another shift level convertor to bring the data to 5V again. I dont see you use it, so I wonder if it is even needed?

      Thanks so much for watching! So I have done that but I don't think did a video. There are mixed opinions when it comes to powering the esp device with a micro usb but i've never had any problems. So what you can do is plug the micro usb into the esp32. then you would still need to attach a wire to the gnd pin and connect that to the gnd from the 12v power supply that is going to the led strip. That should be all you need to do if my memory is correct. Then the data from the esp would still go to the data on the led strip and there would be nothing attached to the vin pin on the esp32. Hope that helps!

    Quick question. Did you use power injection on the other end? Or is the full 10m run just one power source with unnoticable diminish to brightness? I was considering getting a nice big 12 v 15A 180W PSU for my project using 15m of ws2811 but now I am having second thoughts.... Additionally, I am curious to know of it is possible to connect the data wire (green)to 2 led strips and have the same data sent through them I was thinking 5m and 10m( with power injection ) since the big power supply has 3 pairs of +v -v I can use. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for watching and great questions! I did not use power injection on this setup. Just had the power going in at the beging of the first led strip and that's all. If I remember correctly, at 100% brightness and white, I did notice a drop off in color but on every animation or just regular color, it looked great. I also think If I had the brightness set to about 70% and white, I did not notice any drop off in color at that point. And yes you can certainly run the data wire to 2 strips and have them do the same thing. This is called running them in parallels. You can simply split the data line coming from the controller (I love using wago connectors to split the data) and then run the data to whatever strips you have and it should work great!

  • @linkinp1
    @linkinp1 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do it either way! If you want both led strips to do the exact same thing at the exact same time you can split the data line coming from the esp device (parallel) or you can connect 1 strip to the end of the other. Just depends on what you are wanting to do with them on what you would more than likely choose to do!

    Hey Chris, Actually I wanted to mount a 10m LED strip with an ESP32 and WLED on my wall, but currently the Govee M1 LED strip is on sale and very cheap to get. And now I have two questions: Can you get the Govee M1 Led strip without the power supply or do you necessarily need the second? And can you pair two LED strips in the Govee APP so that they play a pattern together? If this is not the case, then I would probably go the ESP32 and WLED route.
    With kind regards
    Christian from Germany :D

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for watching! So as far as I know, they only sell them as a complete package. But you can plug the second strip into the end of the first and everything will run off off the one power supply! You can pair 2 separate strips together in the govee app and they should then do the same animation at the same time! I would maybe try govee first, see what you think and if not, return them and go the esp wled rout! Both good options!

      @@ChrisMaherDIY Thanks Chris. I went with the esp wled rout. It was more fun and there were more possibilities for individualization.

    Help.... I can't find this info anywhere yet, still looking though. First off, @ChrisMaherDIY thank you SO MUCH for all of your tutorials. After much debate and a few returns of Govee lights I took the plunge into ESO, wled, and 2816b lights to do it right!❤ However I still have a few non addressable LED strips already in my space which I want to leave for now, Yet control those with an esp 32 board and wled as well.... Can this be done? Can I control a dumb non addressable 12v LED strip with WLED and an esp32 board? If so, is there a walkthrough somewhere?? Thanks for anyone who can help.

    Hey Chris! I've been watching your videos for a while, but became a subscriber just recently. I was wondering if you could help me with my room's re-design? I wanted to have individually controllable LEDs throughout the perimeter of the room, which measures about 67 feet. What would your suggestion be for Power supply (Single or multiple), number of points of power injection, can 4-5 sequentially connected strips of WS2812B be controlled by just 1 ESP32 board, or would a 12v LED strip setup be better. Appreciate the advice. Cheers!

      @ChrisMaherDIY  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks again buddy! In case you didn't see my reply on your comment on the other video: Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Sounds like an epic project! I have yet to do an install that large so I'm not 100% sure what would be best but here is what I would probably start out with and see how it looks. Depending on the setup of the room I would probably do 2 power supplies (hopefully keep the length of injection wires down a little bit) If you are wanting to have them running on white and full brightness, you would probably need a power injection every 5 meters. If you don't necessarily need them at full brightness and full white, you could probably do just fine with an injection every 10 meters. If you use sk6812 leds, they have a separate white channel and I think on those you could do a power injection at every 10m and be good
      You could probably get away with using just 1 esp32 device but here are some more of the recommended lengths from the WLED info page: kno.wled.ge/features/multi-strip/
      So much of what I do is not technical and just more trial and error. I generally will just test everything out on the floor with little to no power injection, see how it looks and then go from there until I'm happy with how it looks!

    I have a few questions.
    1) When we use a mobile phone adapter instead of the voltage reducer that converts 12 volts to 5 volts in the video, would it be sufficient to supply 5 volts from the mini USB input of the ESP module?
    2) When we use a telephone adapter, is there a need to apply voltage to other points of the module?
    3) How many pins of ESP32 did you connect the green wire to?

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much for watching! So I have successfully powered the esp device using an old phone charger which would eliminate the need for the converter. You could then just power the led strip directly with the 12v power. You would still need to connect the gnd to the gnd of the 12v power supply though. I just connected the green data wire to 1 pin of the esp32 module. I believe it was the d4 or d2 pin.

      Thanks and great question! I think you are 100% correct. If you either don't mind doing more power injection points or you don't need a strip to run at max brightness, I would still for sure go with the ws2812 because as you mentioned they are much cheaper!

  • @TechTy

    Plz tell me what I'm missing here regarding your 12v 5a power supply.
    You used 2 full 5m strips which appeared to be 60 leds/m.
    LEDs are 0.3w each so 60 LEDs x 10m = 180W / 12V = 15amps
    General rule of thumb is to add 20% to the power supply so how are you running those lights (which should be using an 18amp power supply) on a 5a?

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for watching! That's a great question! I don't have the technical knowledge of a lot of people out there yet but my understanding is that led strips recommend power based on max performance. I really have never had the need to run things at full brightness/full white and when running things at lets say 50%, its still very bright and hard to look at. Also, running animations and any other color than white will use far less than the max of what the lights are capable of. I could be way off on my assumptions but I have always been more of a lets plug things in and see what happens type of guy when it comes to playing around with LEDs.

    I do have a couple of questions.
    1. I noticed that you connected the backup data line to ground. I haven't really researched this, but I would have expected that it should be connected to the green (data) wire?! I would love to know the rationale behind this.
    2. What was the strip option that you selected in WLED? Was is WS281x?
    Your assistance is much appreciated.

    Hi, if i have 4 led strips ws2815 12v (1 in the bathroom ceiling, 2 in the hallway ceiling and 1 under the furnishing of the kitchen that illuminate the stove and the counter). my idea was to alimentate each of his strip with a dedicated power supply and 1 esp32 how you show in this video (so a total of 4 power supply and 4 esp32 controller). could i control them all trough WLED and make them work toghther with the same effect, and have the possibility to create preset with 1, 2, 3, 4 of them toghether or alone? as an example create the "fire" effect in all the house, or create the "wood" effect only in the hallway (so 2 strips), or create the "ocean" effect only in the bathroom. I hope to explain well my question. Thanks for the video

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for watching and great question! Yes you can do that. The only thing I bring up is that when you sync them all together, you can control them all at once but that does not mean that all the 4 sections with the 4 different controllers led strips will act as 1 single long led strip. I doubt that is something you care about but just in case it was I'm not aware of being able to sync them like. As far as the presets you can assign different controllers to different sync groups so that when you change one device it only changes the others in the specific group if that makes sense. You should be able to then set presets for all of this for quick access!
