    This was a great tutorial. I really like the WS2815 strips. I've found that an ATX power supply from a PC will also work as a great LED power supply in a pinch.
    To power on the ATX power supply outside of a PC, you'll need to utilize pins 15 (Black) and 16 (Usually Green)
    You can use a small piece of wire to 'jump' the two slots on the 24 pin connector to power on the power supply.
    If you use the 'jump' method, I recommend jumping to two slots BEFORE you plug in the power supply to avoid blowing fuses and sparking.
    Or, you can do what I did and get a pin pusher to push the pins out of the 24 pin connector, then put a basic, single pole, switch between pins 15(Black) and 16(Usually Green), or simply twist the two pins together and use the power cable to power on the supply.
    The yellow wires are 12 V, the Red wires are 5 V, and the Orange wires are 3.3 V.
    All of the black wires are ground.
    There are tons of online tutorials on using unused PC power supplies for bench top projects. These power supplies provide a ton of available watts for long lengths of LED strips.
    With having multiple yellow, red, and black wires, you can power 12V and 5V LED strips at the same time using one supply.
    Have fun everyone and be careful out there. God Bless! 👊

    Hang on... how are you powering a 5 meter strip of 60 LED/meter WS2815 lights with a 12v 5A power supply? The BTF websites specs say that each led draws 0.3 watts of power and on a 5 meter strip thats 300 x 0.3 = 90 watts. Am I missing something? Are those actually 30 LED/meter? I'm trying to connect four of these together in parellel and power them accordingly but now I'm worried my wattage is way to the high with the power supply I have in mind.

    • @coreyevans9543
      @coreyevans9543 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did you figure your issue out?
      I have similar questions about the power supply.
      Haven't decided what to go with yet, 5V or 12V LEDs, but whatever the case may be what gauge wire do we use?
      Is it based off of the volts, amps or watts?

    • @Octoooo
      @Octoooo 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@coreyevans9543 I soldered on the 18 gauge wires he recommended. If you're just running 1 or two strips then it's not incredibly necessary. I think if you're going for a longer run of multiple strips, I would recommend upgrading the gauge to 18 for less resistance throughout the strip and using a higher voltage strip like the 12 volt over the 5 volt.
      As a word of advice, try to find tutorials that mimick your own project and goals with that project as much as possible so you make the least mistakes.

    • @coreyevans9543
      @coreyevans9543 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Octoooo
      I've been doing some calculations and it seems that the lower 5V set-up is more expensive than the 24V set-up.
      I need about 13 metres of LEDs, which is around 300 watts. The thing I found that costs more are 5V LEDs and the wire to handle the amps.
      Did you do price setup comparisons?

  • @davidgekler
    @davidgekler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    FYI professional always use 24v strips - longer runs and more reliable binned LEDs. But what you do is perfectly acceptable and COOL! Keep it up

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I have yet to try the 24v strips but I for sure do at some point. Do you know if there are individually addressable 24v strips available or are they either controlled in sets of 3 or 6 leds?

    • @alunjones3860
      @alunjones3860 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChrisMaherDIY I don't see how they could make 24V strips with individually addressable LEDs. The LEDs are 3V each, so for 24V, six are wired in series, leaving 3V dropped across the resistor, or linear current regulator. I suppose they could pack 6 LED small chips per channel, into each RGB LED package, but that would make it more expensive and I've not seen it before.

    • @joireland
      @joireland ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisMaherDIY You can get 720LED/M FCOB strips from BTF-Lighting that are 24V powered now. They are addressable down to 5cm lengths using WS2811 chips (5cm = 36LEDs). Each 5M strip would have 100 WS2811 chips to control each 5cm length of 36LEDs each (5cm is about 2 inches and 5M is about 16 feet).

    You did exactly the application/operation I had in mind. Is it okay if we power the ESP 32 module from an external source? For example, with a mobile phone charger with a 5 volt output.

    I have a few questions.
    1) When we use a mobile phone adapter instead of the voltage reducer that converts 12 volts to 5 volts in the video, would it be sufficient to supply 5 volts from the mini USB input of the ESP module?
    2) When we use a telephone adapter, is there a need to apply voltage to other points of the module?
    3) How many pins of ESP32 did you connect the green wire to?

      Thanks so much for watching! So I have done that but I don't think did a video. There are mixed opinions when it comes to powering the esp device with a micro usb but i've never had any problems. So what you can do is plug the micro usb into the esp32. then you would still need to attach a wire to the gnd pin and connect that to the gnd from the 12v power supply that is going to the led strip. That should be all you need to do if my memory is correct. Then the data from the esp would still go to the data on the led strip and there would be nothing attached to the vin pin on the esp32. Hope that helps!

    Hi, if i have 4 led strips ws2815 12v (1 in the bathroom ceiling, 2 in the hallway ceiling and 1 under the furnishing of the kitchen that illuminate the stove and the counter). my idea was to alimentate each of his strip with a dedicated power supply and 1 esp32 how you show in this video (so a total of 4 power supply and 4 esp32 controller). could i control them all trough WLED and make them work toghther with the same effect, and have the possibility to create preset with 1, 2, 3, 4 of them toghether or alone? as an example create the "fire" effect in all the house, or create the "wood" effect only in the hallway (so 2 strips), or create the "ocean" effect only in the bathroom. I hope to explain well my question. Thanks for the video

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for watching and great question! Yes you can do that. The only thing I bring up is that when you sync them all together, you can control them all at once but that does not mean that all the 4 sections with the 4 different controllers led strips will act as 1 single long led strip. I doubt that is something you care about but just in case it was I'm not aware of being able to sync them like. As far as the presets you can assign different controllers to different sync groups so that when you change one device it only changes the others in the specific group if that makes sense. You should be able to then set presets for all of this for quick access!

    So the o ly way is with the mini usb cable. Have to chop into wire to hot wire off black and red for strip power source. Then splice earth onto esp and strip so to have common earth .
    Be a lot easier if I could power esp from a voltage reduction board and use it to replace generic controller thats running 2811 leds

      Hey, I had the same problem (with the same ESP32) as you but with an WS2812 ECO and fixed it in the end. I dont remember how I fixed it, but this is how I wired it: You have 2 lose wire red&white, these connect directly to power supply. The other one with 3 wire: red, white & green are directly connected to ESP32. Red to 5V, White to GND (between G13 & G12) and Green to G4.

    Plz tell me what I'm missing here regarding your 12v 5a power supply.
    You used 2 full 5m strips which appeared to be 60 leds/m.
    LEDs are 0.3w each so 60 LEDs x 10m = 180W / 12V = 15amps
    General rule of thumb is to add 20% to the power supply so how are you running those lights (which should be using an 18amp power supply) on a 5a?

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for watching! That's a great question! I don't have the technical knowledge of a lot of people out there yet but my understanding is that led strips recommend power based on max performance. I really have never had the need to run things at full brightness/full white and when running things at lets say 50%, its still very bright and hard to look at. Also, running animations and any other color than white will use far less than the max of what the lights are capable of. I could be way off on my assumptions but I have always been more of a lets plug things in and see what happens type of guy when it comes to playing around with LEDs.

    Hi there, super clear video. One questoon I have still is the following: I have exactly the same BTF ws2815 strip. I can't use WLED drivers unfortunately for my project (making a wordlclock) but i am familiar programming in arduino language myself. This leaves me with the following: my ESP32 MH-ET-LIVE board has - i think - 3.33V data out at IO33 (but i think at all data outputs to be honest) even though i drive it with step down 5V like you do.
    I have read that the 3.3V data signal would not be enough for the WS2815 strip to take it in, and that i need another shift level convertor to bring the data to 5V again. I dont see you use it, so I wonder if it is even needed?
    Regards from Holland

      Hi there, 3.3v is ok for but for some cases you can have some problems. I recommend a cheap logic level shifter

    I'm making a Halloween prop that is an inter dimensional portal and the inner ring I want to run LED strips with a lighting effect like its spinning up, I see lots of tutorials on how to do all this in WLED and what not, but what I'm missing is how to trigger a light show using my various prop controllers. they all just send 5/12/24v signals to turn channels on or off, but I also have DMX options in some and i'm learning how to use their various software with DMX LED decoders. Basically I don't want to trigger the shows from a phone or a button, I wanted it to be automated in a line of animations that are all being triggered by these prop controllers. have any ideas?

    Are you running the strip directly off the ESP32 data line - that's 3.3V... doesn't the WS2815 need 5V or is it 3.3V tolerant ?

      All in all it woud be possible, but i don't know how this can work together with wled, maybe you need to add something to the code.
      Coltography did use some capacitive touch sensors for his LED ceiling with an esp but only for simple on/off

    If I understand everything right - for WS2815 model is not real to connect controller with remote control, only WIFI or Bluetooth?

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for watching! You can connect the WS2815 strips to a wide variety of controllers. But my understanding is you do need a controller because if you just provide power to these lights, there is nothing then telling the lights what to do.

    Hi. wonderful tutorial, it pushed me try. Just becouse i had a lot of 2815 that i use for shows on stages, and i was searching a good solution to avoid distance limitation with cables.
    Unfortunatly my first test returned a full white strip, blinking a bit, with tiny rgb noise. Backup and Gnd wired toghether as you... i try to ask, beacause looks so simple but i'm not seeing the proper light at the end... any suggestion? i'm powering the esp32 with a phone charger through usb, and the ledstrip through a DC power supply. maybe is that? i bought a pack of 12Vto5V, that will arrive in few days
    thanks a lot!

      Thanks for reaching out! One thing to double check is that the gnd from the power supply, led strip and eap device is all common. Also double check in led preferences that the dpio pin is set to the pin that you used for data on the board. Let me know if any of that helps!

    On the esp32 are you just plugging the +5v into the 5v pin and the gnd to the gnd pin. The same as you would when you would power it via the USB port and the +5v pin and gnd pin would be then connected to the LED strip?
    I only ask as I tried a 12v power supply using your directions, and it worked for a bit but then the esp32 overheated and the wifi module no longer works. So made me wonder if the pins on the esp32 are connected differently in this configuration.

    Chris great awesome helpful videos. Do you recommend any one specific profile channel or LED brand to use on ceilings/walls for lighting used as main light source? Similar to what is show for more contemporary design layouts?
    How do you determine what brand and setup to use for different lighting use. I.e.
    1) Main light source
    2) Entertainment Audio/Video Around TV
    3) Gaming
    4) Bar area?
    5) General hallway ceilings/walls?
    6) Garage ceilings for more brighter lighting
    7) Stair case under stair tread lighting
    Also Govee seems to have a really user friendly package deal with products, power, and switch however if you need lighting for example threw out ceilings leading to one switch for on/off how do you setup this? Or another example would be having multiple LED strips on different ceiling/walls that leads to one power source and control source how would this be setup?
    Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

      Thanks so much for watching and that's a great question! Since i've never tried using led profiles/ lights for a main lighting source, i'm afraid I would just be guessing if I gave you any advice. I really do like govee but i'm not sure their led strips would be best for main lighting since the white color on the strips is not a dedicated white. My approach with everything is do a little online research, order what I think will be best, test it out and either keep it and use it because it looks nice, or return things, get my money back and try something else. I'm very much a trial and error type of guy so that's usually how I go about doing things. I also don't really have any experience yet on switches or trying to run power to main house supply. Hopefully someday I'll know a lot more answers to be more helpful!

      @@ChrisMaherDIY thank you greatly appreciate the info and help. I will give the trial and error idea a go. I see more and more homes now are using the long LED Strip lighting in ceilings for multiple rooms on same floor as a main light and was just wondering what they are using or how is setup (i.e all wired to same adapter, controller) and if that is the best quality setup and materials. only issue was not understanding the power side of things. Also if you install LED strip lights in different rooms do you use one (1) power source or controller? I like the Govee idea. But my fear is one I install the LED strip and something wacky goes wrong and requires repair or replacement I need to access the power adapter, or any other component controller or actual wiring how do I access these cut back into drywall?

    Hello, I connected the ws2815 12v tape (4 meters), powered by an external 12v 10A and 120W source. ESP32 board powered by 5v via the usb connector, green wire on D2 and blue wire on GND of the 12V source. The tape only turns on at first for less than a meter and the colors are random and I can't control it via Wled, any solution? Thanks.

      Is the gnd on the esp board connected to the gnd of the 12v power supply and led strip? Try that first! Also make sure the gpio in WLED under led preferences is set to 2 if your using the d2 pin.

    On WLED website they say it would be mandatory to use a Level shifter for 12v strips but you didn't use it and it's working! Why? Also they say something about capacitors to smooth the transitions but yours look great already... wonder if those are all extra stuff that you can only see on big projects or what

      Thanks so much for watching and great question! I would say that this would be the best for that! If you have it at full brightness and solid white color you can still notice a little drop off in color if you only have power at the beginning but its much better than using a 5v stip.
