at approx 3:00 you mentioned keeping the amps to 4 because thats the limit of the jst connectors. would it be possible to go the full 8-10 amps if you just cut the jst connector off and put the wires from the strip directly into the controller?
Thanks for watching and great question! If you cut off the jst connector and use the wires on the strip I would maybe then go up to 6amps. The wires on the strip are either 20 or 22 awg which are pretty thin. If I wanted to go higher than 6amps I would then solder my own thicker 18awg wires and then go up to 9amps if needed keeping it a little below what the controller says is the max which is 10. Hope that helps!
Sadly cutting the wire off won't help much since those aren't the limiting factor is the LED strip itself, not the wires. Whatever diameter wire you attach to a generic ws28xx strip you will not get more then 4A into a single edge connection or about 8A into a middle connection. The strip just has too much resistance on it's copper tracks to allow for more hence why we need to do power injection to combat "voltage drop" (which in actuality is combatting the resistance by adding more copper). There are controllers out there which have power distribution and fusing all on the controller itself, but not on Amazon.
Thanks so much for your videos, they've been very helpful on my journey to set up some cool LEDs in my kid's bedrooms. Have you looked at or tried the dig2go? I would love a review from you or some insight on your channel, it looks like a great all-in-one and easy way to get some lights set up.
I wish they can make one of this controllers Apple HomeKit compatible, so I can integrate it to my eco system and have some cool automation wit all my others lights I know Apple HomeKit has a lot of limitations but for example all the lights at my front yard at night are set to stay at very low brightness very very nice amber colors but when motion is detected all lights change to bright almost day light and look amazing and when the sensor stops detecting motion all my lights return to the low brightness… awesome video thanks for sharing
love this controller as it supports the full range of voltages, it is now in my basket. It, or something that looks similar but a different name, is available in the uk.
Hi Chris great video! I ordered 20 meters of the BTF FCOB WS2814 DC24V 784LED/m 70IC 10mm width version. My question is will this controller be able to run 15,680 leds? Led strips calls for 24V 3A power per 5m, hence my total load would be 12A but the Ericsity controller rated for 10A max. Your thoughts?
My WLED app does not have the sound setting tab as shown at the 3:27 mark. The manual says to access that to configure the mic. How do I get the mic to work or get this sound setting tab to show? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Chris and all the Chris community. Here is an open question: I purchased all the items on this video and followed all the instrucions up to minute 5:42. However the intensity of the led lights is not bright enough. I think I have three options.... 1) use a 24 volt power supply; 2) Do power 12 V power inyection for each led strip... or 3) Raise the automatic brightness limiter to XXX mA. Anyone knows the solution? Alberto. Houston TX
Alberto, did you fix it? Because I was wondering to make the some setup 15m of LEDs, have them with the 2 GPIO outputs (7,5m each) and I was gonna get a 12v 10A power supply, and I don't want to have power injections or some, cause it will look awful. Let me know something about that
I got brighter LEDs by changing xLight / Controllers tab / selected device / Protocol: DDP (instead of the default E131). As DDP is an auto-discovery protocol, I'm sure I just set my E131 settings wrong, giving the lights lower voltage... but DDP doubled brightness for me.
@@3papproductions103 There is section for matrix. Personally I haven't setup matrix panels. I have 32*64 and 8*32 panels but wasn't happy with what wled can do. There is a new release soon but there is also night driver software for matrix. There are plenty of TH-cam vids on using matrix with wled
Hi @ChrisMaherDIY. I’ve many of your videos over the years and recently purchased this controller after watching this video. Since buying it I haven’t been able to get the sound react to work, after researching it turns out it doesn’t come out of the box working like that, it requires an install. Your video made it appear as though it worked out of the box. Can you show how you got the sound react to work on this Ericsity controller? Thanks for all the hard work and great content you put into your videos.
I need help...for the first example you showed, if I wanted a higher brightness than 4000 would I need to cut off the connector and solder the wires together or what do I do?...I'm working on a tray ceiling and I need about 50-60 ft of LEDs, your video is amazing and has been the most helpful so far pls help.
Great videos. One thing I'm not sure of is the benefit of running 24 vs 12 volt. I understand that with greater voltage you can run smaller gauge wire. Why would I want to purchase the 24 volt instead of the 12-volt? I'm going to put LEDs around the perimeter of my game room. 88 feet. Would I be better off with the 24-volt? Will I be able to run all 88 ft off of one power supply? I'm assuming I could run 2 44ft strips off of one controller. Any help would be appreciated
Thanks for watching! From what I've read, the UART version has a micro usb port on the board that you can access by popping off the white main housing. This would be beneficial if you wanted to connect directly to your computer to do updates instead of over the air. I have not played around with the UART version but my understanding that is the only difference.
Couple quick questions if you don’t mind. Looking at the BTF lighting WS281 4 32 foot Cobb strip and the. Alitove 24v 144w. Wondering if I can extend the strip lights past 32 feet and if so, would it require a power injector. I’m also looking at the ericsity wledesp32 to control everything and not sure if that has any length limitations. Thanks so much just getting into this brand new.
At 3:27 it is mentioned that the button can be reprogrammed to cycle through presets. Anyone know how to do that? I looked into the macros section hoping there would be something already set there that could be adjusted but that wasn’t the case. Thanks.
With the 5v, sk6812 strips, can you connect 4, 4m strips like the first example with 1 power supply without any power loss? If no, how big does my power supply need to be without power injections or is that unavoidable? Thanks!!
Would you say the SK6812 are you favorite LED strip at the moment? You do so much, and talk so fast through everything, that I can never tell what your “go-to” stuff is at the moment!
have you put a 2nd led strip on the spiral yet?.. you have another side that is empty and having 2 led strips, they would face each other by default in most places. meaning, you could get some interesting color mixing between the 2 opposing led strips facing each other in that wooden spiral etc... cool video thanx
Hey Chris, great video. I see that you connected a 5v ledstrip (5 meters 60 led pm)? If so did you notice the limit the controller gives (10A) where de 5v Ledstris needs more (18a), how does that affected the strip?
Thanks for the informative vid. Any suggestions if the wled app can’t find the lights? Connected phone and lights to same network but still the lights not found.
Thanks for this video. I am facing a problem with my btf 5m led cob lights. When connected to the Gledopto controller with the prescribed 12v 5a power supply i get flickering and random colour problems. Looks like it is to do with the level shifter. Any advice on this please ?
I have the same problem with a 24V WS2811 LED strip. 3 Gledopto controllers produce the same issue. The same LED strip and PSU works fine with an Athom controller.Has your problem been solved since then?
@@gyulaandor2161 Hi, I found out that if you have a long wire coming out from controller to the lights then this could happen. Its solved for me by cutting the wire to a short length. Hope that helps.
I'm planning to use the BTF-LIGHTING WS2815 Light Strip and ESP32 WLED Controller with the power supply you recommended for my Kitchen remodeling project for the accent lights on top & under the cabinets. If I play music will the MIC on the ESP32 allow the light strip to match the beat of the music? Also, can I connect this Controller with the Alexa App? I didn't hear you say anything about that in your video, so I was curious before I purchased it on Amazon. Thanks again for the Full Walkthrough video.
do you have revommendations for ww/cw LED strips and controller? i wanna make some ambient lighting in my kitchen and hallway. nothing over 5m and im unexpirienced in this. used only govee lights until now but for this i dont need RGB or adressable strips. just dimmable and with good whites :D
great information and video. what would you say would be the longest led run you could do with each strip and what power supply would be best. i probably want to do about 20m but think i may be better doing on lots of different runs. i would prefer the cob strip but it seems a lot.
Awesome video. Thank you! One set of questions: I am trying to add lights to 2 short bar shelves (one is about 3 feet long and the other is 5 feet long). Can I cut the SK6812 strips? Do I lose the rest of the 5 meters or can I somehow reconnect the cut pieces? Or are there shorter strips (1-2 m) available that are equivalent and compatible? TIA
Good day chris, i would like to add some lights to my home project but my ? is i am looking at 100feet of running lights to circle my cealing. can this set up run all these light or will i need a booster. also i would love to add the motion lights on my stairs. 2 stearway. please give me some advise. thanks,
I bought 2 16 ft fcob strips, 12v power supply and the controller and got nothing but flickering. I'm going to try the 5c pcbs with a different psu and see if i get a better result. For an off the shelf product you shouldn't have to add a resister to resolve flickering.
Are there any WLED Controllers for Dual White CCT Strips too? (got a COB strip with three wires (WW, CW and 24V) from BTF-Lighting) I just wanna do some simple "candle" effect with WLED and such (they are non adressable!!)
Great video Chris! I have two questions. 1) Does this ESP WLED controller offer the same results like the original ESP? Which one do you prefer an why? 2) You connect the SK6812 strip with black AC power supply but on your desk you use a 60A power supply. When can i use the one or the other? Whats the difference? Thank you for your time. God bless you
In the final display you said you were using the cob lights as well as the WS 2815 which was the first ones you set up right what does the WS2812 look like does it look as good as the 15 or should I just get the 15s?
Will this controller remember what preset its on if i wanted to power it with a light switch? For under cabinets in the kitchen so for day to day i could just have a switched receptacle and pre-set to white? Or would i need to do that with the controller button/app every time?
Hey Mate! Im looking for a cob strip rgb cct IC. At the moment is not available, the seller only has rgb ww / rgb nw or rgb cw. Do you think with Neutral White will enought to generate with rgb the WarmnWhite and CoolWhite?
Hey buddy you truly inspired me to go ahead with the setup that you have.. can I ask just a question I'm not sure if you mentioned it already but what's the maximum length of SK6812 or maximum led lamps that you can go with the same 5v power supply?
Can this controller effectively operate two distinct LED strips simultaneously? I'm contemplating installing two strips within a corner diffuser. The intention is to designate one strip for color illumination and the other for pure white light. However, I am uncertain if this approach is advisable. Approximately a year ago, I corresponded with @chrisMaherDIY, who indicated that color strips might not offer optimal performance for dedicated white lighting. I am curious if technological advancements have since addressed this limitation, enabling LED strips to provide both superior color rendition and white illumination. If so, could you please recommend the most suitable LED strips and controller for this purpose?
Thanks for watching and bummer your having issues! Anytime something doesnt work, it usually comes down to the grounds are not connected together, jumper wires are defective, or I forgot to update the gpio field in led preferences to the correct data pin i'm using on the esp device. Also make sure the arrows on the led strip are all pointing in the same direction which is away from the controller. Hope that helps!
@@EasyDoesIt70 I can’t speak to which ones you see on your local Amazon store, but there’s a link to the mic version in the video description and the top comment. Happy lighting!
Does this have a logic level shifter built in? I'm having issues where I want to connect 8 1m strips in parallel, but they get weird after I connect more than 2. The wifi isn't usable and the lights don't respond. I've tried a signal amplifier with no luck
Hey chris, I'm looking at your comments in the description about how if using a 24v cob strip to use GRB and to swap W & G, what W and G would I be swapping? I've got a 4m strip hooked up to a 24v power supply and one of these controllers, I can't get the strip to set to a solid color. Each controllable zone is a different color and when I choose a solid color nothing happens. When I click "peak" it shows the solid color. So I'm assuming I either have something in the settings put in incorrectly or something with my hardware isn't working...
Question. I want this automated by google home. When you apply power to the controller, do the leds automatically come on? Or do I need to go into the app every time?
Can i use to connect to a CELL PHONE'S HOTSPOT network???? Since where I want to install 3 of these devices I don't have wifi I hope you can help me thanks community
Yes, as long as your hotspot supports the number of Lights you will have attached to it and whatever you're using to control it with like your phone. Just need to know what the hotspots name and password is when you set it up in the app software. He mentions this when he talks about if setting up on his home network. You will just use your hotspot information instead of your home network information please note that most Wi-Fi hotspots especially if they are based from someone's phone will often have a low-power or Les use or timed power off

I'm gonna combine it with the wled controller but i'm not sure about the power supply. Hello, great video. I have watched a couple of your videos now and subscribed to your channel. I have purchased 3 x SK6812 RGBW LED strips as I need a 12 m run around the perimeter of my room. What power supply would you recommend for my setup? Cheers Matt (UK)
Hi Chris, after watching your how-to video, may I ask you if there's an ESP32 board case (preferably one to see the status light. I'd love an acrylic sandwich style with screws). I've only found plastic matchbox-sized cases small enough to fit the 2"x1" ESP32 board on Amazon you recommended. Thank you! WLED is so much fun!
Is home WiFi required for wled app to work for inside vehicle project is it possible to connect first to home WiFi then later use cellular data on the phone to make adjustments or change color and style?
So hello there I am asking again since I bought the exact same cob lights and the exact same power supplies I have two questions? Number one is why the heck is my cob lights randomly flashing blue when I try and use them with their very own controller the exact same one that I got from your link here? I have no problem with the 2815s I bought I think that's how you say it The upgraded LED strip which I use with the same exact controller and power supply that I got from your links. I'm just really trying to figure out if I need to get a new set of cob lights if it's the lights or if there's something else going on and I seem to get no answer

Using the WLED Controller ESP8266 and connecting the 12v power from the motorhome. I believe there will be about 750 LEDs per side. Will i have to run 12v in a few spots per side for there to be enough power? can I just pull 12v from the closes power source at the end of the LED line? if so and the batteries are being charged will that hurt the LEDs having more than 12v ? would I need to install some sort of inline power stop so it can't get more than 12v? would I need 2 controllers ? one for each side? The wires on the strip are either 20 or 22 awg which are pretty thin. If I wanted to go higher than 6amps I would then solder my own thicker 18awg wires and then go up to 9amps if needed keeping it a little below what the controller says is the max which is 10. Hope that helps!
thank you for the clear and detailed answer!@@ChrisMaherDIY
Sadly cutting the wire off won't help much since those aren't the limiting factor is the LED strip itself, not the wires. Whatever diameter wire you attach to a generic ws28xx strip you will not get more then 4A into a single edge connection or about 8A into a middle connection. The strip just has too much resistance on it's copper tracks to allow for more hence why we need to do power injection to combat "voltage drop" (which in actuality is combatting the resistance by adding more copper).
There are controllers out there which have power distribution and fusing all on the controller itself, but not on Amazon.
Wow this is nuts! I'm really glad this stuff is affordable now
Subscribed when I saw your SSID ;)
Yeah buddy!
This is what I was looking for! I have had so many headaches with the quinled stuff as time has passed.
Awesome! Glad there is something similar available over there!
yes, does look the same but it does not say its got a built in mic like the one in this video
Which one did you find, I’m struggling to find one in the UK

Hey Chris do you think you could make a video about custom led puck lights and using wled to control them?
5:18 How do you think you can detect a voltage drop when the LED strips are all still on the roll?
Please make videos with generic esp8266 board and 4 pin led strip ... where there are two data wires along with vin & ground.
Thanks! I'll put that on my list of projects I would like to get to eventually! Thanks!
Is the data output from this 5V or 3.3V? If I used this would I still need a level shifter if there is 15ft between the controller and strip
Chris, your videos are the best! So helpful! Will you create a tutorial regarding WS 2812 LED panels?
Do u mean matrix panels?
@@Krakenled yes. I have an 8 x 8 ..haven't figured out how to configure with wled
@@3papproductions103
There is section for matrix.
Could you show how to wire this to power that doesn't plug in to an outlet?
Much love ❤thank you for this 🙏please keep up the great hard work, content and videos
4000 is more than enough brother
@corvusgaming1577 thank you
ur welcome. I personally have it capped at 4000 and at 50% brightness my eyes hurts😂
How do you sync that to the tv light the Phillips Hue Sync box? I think this has more features and more fun…
On the Amazon link, what is the difference between "MIC" & "Mic with Download"? (on the product image a UART logo is on one)
Thanks for watching! From what I've read, the UART version has a micro usb port on the board that you can access by popping off the white main housing. This would be beneficial if you wanted to connect directly to your computer to do updates instead of over the air. I have not played around with the UART version but my understanding that is the only difference.
@@ChrisMaherDIY awesome thanks.... love your vids.... i have watched a bunch of them... keep up the great work!!!
Legendary. Thank you Chris.
How can you do hard wire this led strip to a home switch?
Was wondering how you made spiral template to mount leds in spiral. please elaborate..thanks.
Wondering if you can do a video using the module for turn signal lights and sequential and stuff?
have you put a 2nd led strip on the spiral yet?.. you have another side that is empty and having 2 led strips, they would face each other by default in most places. meaning, you could get some interesting color mixing between the 2 opposing led strips facing each other in that wooden spiral etc... cool video thanx
What are your thoughts on QuinLED's Dig2go controller? Seems like a very good value for complete plug & play solution for $50-65.
Is it possible to add an external button with this controller so that the controller can be hidden?
Can I power this with a 20v tool battery directly? Or should I run a 12v step down converter?
I'm planning to use the BTF-LIGHTING WS2815 Light Strip and ESP32 WLED Controller with the power supply you recommended for my Kitchen remodeling project for the accent lights on top & under the cabinets. If I play music will the MIC on the ESP32 allow the light strip to match the beat of the music? Also, can I connect this Controller with the Alexa App? I didn't hear you say anything about that in your video, so I was curious before I purchased it on Amazon. Thanks again for the Full Walkthrough video.
What do you mean by Swap: W & G on 24v Cob RGBW: SK6812 configuration?
do you have revommendations for ww/cw LED strips and controller? i wanna make some ambient lighting in my kitchen and hallway. nothing over 5m and im unexpirienced in this. used only govee lights until now but for this i dont need RGB or adressable strips. just dimmable and with good whites :D
love the vids keep up the good work
Thanks so much!!
great information and video. what would you say would be the longest led run you could do with each strip and what power supply would be best. i probably want to do about 20m but think i may be better doing on lots of different runs. i would prefer the cob strip but it seems a lot.
2 stearway. please give me some advise. thanks,
which controller supports apple home kit? Can such controllers be connected to a regular power bank?
If you can make a video to show what's inside this controller and compare it with the normal esp32
If so, could you please recommend the most suitable LED strips and controller for this purpose?
nice video,, i have a barbrershop and i want to put led, wich set up of the one you listed is best to provide brightness, 12v or 24v ?? thank you
Thanks for watching! I'd go with the 24v!
Nice video, BUT... What is that levitation headphone stand at 7:11 ? 😳
What voltage led strip is good for what? I would like to make some sort of wake up light in the bedroom, should I pick the 24 volts?
I love your videos! I’m having trouble getting WLED working, not sure why. I’ve followed the instructions on several TH-cam videos… help.😂
Best to start with pre-assembled hardware and a WS2812b strip and these new controllers seem like a great solution for the hardware!
@@JB-fh1bb are those the red pre loaded ones on Amazon?
Thanks for watching and bummer your having issues! Does this have a logic level shifter built in?
I'm having issues where I want to connect 8 1m strips in parallel, but they get weird after I connect more than 2. The wifi isn't usable and the lights don't respond. I've tried a signal amplifier with no luck
As a follow up I just returned it and bought and ESP32 and just went old school DIY
Why does the description on the cob led strip say they don't work with wled but in your video yours work?
Is it possible to connect multiple strips to the controller directly, or would each strip need its own controller? If so, how can you sync them?

From what you said and some articles that i read (correct me if i'm wrong) i need a power supply that has 5v supply voltage, power of 300 watt (found online that consumable power for 1m SK6812 is 43,2w) and energy consuption at 60A (also found online that is 9A per 1 meter).
