For anyone interested in recreating this, read this first!
Most power supplies with barrel connectors that you have lying around the house are not suitable for this project! Some of them may be 12V, some of them 19.5V.
Plugging in your ESP32 or the WS2812b strip directly to anything higher than 5 volts without any step-down in between will for sure fry the microchip in no time. You should never, even for a minute or two, exceed the 5V current to the VIN pins for those devices. Even though these are not expensive, please read the information stickers on power supplies.
Have a wonderful rest of the day!

This is awesome, been wanting to switch over to wled for lighting projects but seemed like a lot to learn. This video definitely simplifies it. Do you have a recommendation for how you could better seal up the esp32 and wiring into a more finished package (like a 3d printed case with different wires that don't stick way out like those jumpers do from the board)? I feel like the main downside of this setup is you have a random control board and wiring + connectors just laying around on the floor or wherever.

If I want to install 3 individual led strips in a ceiling (each about 15’ in length) and I want each strip to do the exact same thing, do I wire them in parallel, in series or should each strip be individually wired back to the controller? Hi Chris
Watched an earlier video of yours and got a bit confused as to why my leds where still flickering. After some digging about it turned out to be the length of the signal wires I used. I tried hooking my speakers and tv to one esp device and used long 1mm cables. Not the right way. You can use the skip the first led and solder in a single led to boost the signal but I still think it’s better to use a signal booster if your going to do it this way. Thanks for all the great info and maybe this is something you can expand on or explain in a diffrent video. Thanks

Thx for making these vids - super helpful! Have you tried using the three wire LED WRGB like in this video with the plug and play controllers? Most of the plug and play controllers I'm seeing (Ericsity/Gledopto) seem to be setup to work with WRGB but expect a 5 wire WRGB vs. 3.

    • @PeterjohnButterworth
      @PeterjohnButterworth 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Looking at this problem closer - I'll answer my own question. The 3 wire WRGB LED strip has the IC chip, so its three wires are power/data/return. The 5 wire WRGB has no IC chip in the LED strip so It's got individual wires for colors + white vs. a single data wire. There is no data channel / pin on the Ericsity/Gledopto plug and plays controller boards out of the box from what I can tell, potentially possible with flashing/repurposing the 5 in 1 boards, but very questionable if worth the time/effort vs. buying a cheap ESP32 board with lan or wifi.

Thank you for many useful videos. I found that most controller including the ESP32 is limited to 10A. Do you have to put in multiples ESP32 for certain length? I plan to cover my office with 60 ft of addressable WS2813 or WS2815 but I found that the Amp for my length for either would exceed the 10A limit of the controller. Do you have any suggestion how to solve this problem? Thanks...

10 amps would likely be more then enough for 60' in prentice since you seldom run all the leds at the same time at max brightness.

9:48 Don't you need an extra connection from PSU to ESP32 in terms of sending power to the module itself too?
Can you connect more led strips along the line and supply them with power using only the "power injection point" of the first strip in series, like PSU to 1st strip, and then white & red wires of 1st strip to 2nd strip's white & red wires and so on? (besides main 3 wires for sure)
Or should you connect each strip's "power injection point" to the PSU individually?

The lack of an extra connector was confusing me too, following in case you get a response.

Hi Chris, I now have 2 WLED BTC light strips set up. Maybe I asked this q on another video, but is there a case for the ESP32 or a larger one that can tuck in the jumper wires and LED strip connector? Thank you!

Thank you for your wonderful video. I clicked on your breadboard jumper wire Amazon link and it defaults to a female to female connector. In the video, however, it appears you're using a male connector. Which breadboard jumper cable doing use as I don't see a male connector on one end and a female connector on the other end that would connect to the WLED board. Thank you

I just checked and you are right. Looks like they must have sold out of the male to female jumper wire since the link now takes someone to the female female one. Try searching for male to female and you should see a bunch of options. I'll see if I can update the link to have an option for something else. Thanks for letting me know!

I found some LED strips on Aliexpress that are model WS2811 12v 720 LEDs per meter which makes it look as if it had a diffuser, do you know if 10 meters will work using a 12volt 10amp power source with WLED? The thing is that where I live they don't sell LED diffusers and if I buy them online they are expensive.
If there are 10 meters of LEDs with 720 LEDs, it would be a total of 7200LEDs in 10 meters. Will they work using a 12volt 10amp power source?
    Thanks for reading my comment

thank you for this great video
But I admit I'm a little lost knowing what to do if we only want one power supply for the ESP as well as the LED strip
Because in the detail of your video you have to independently power the ESP and independently the LED strip, what I would like to be able to do in a clean, efficient and secure way is to power everything via a single power supply

I got my LED strip to work by using the included extra connector included with the LED strip. I cut off the end in attached the new plug with the male connectors.
