just a note: please read the power specification of the PSU, put the current limit on it into WLED (instead of an arbitrary 2000mA) and set the voltage of the LEDs correctly (in the dropdown on the WLED LED settings page, select either 12V or 24V, I don't know which one they used) so that WLED can correctly calculate how bright it can drive the LEDs without tripping the PSU's overcurrent protection. I do not expect you to have any issues but by using a non-ideal value you may be artificially limiting how bright the strip can run. In the video, the strip looked brighter before your WLED conversion and it doesn't have to.
I've been using Govee products for my setups for a long time, and only recently started getting into the world of microelectronics and wiring. It was really cool seeing these two things in one video, especially in a way that can increase the strip's functionality so much!
How about a parking guide in a garage? Guide and alignment and stop point based on sensor inputs that adjust light sequence, color, speed. Different colors to go left/right, different speed and color for distance remaining to go, some sort of color or pattern change for stopping. That could be fun.

I’m sure I could to it with enough patients but I have to say these look like the perfect tool to cover a lot really quickly. I was hoping to know if it’s possible to soder two strips together to make them seamlessly fit and flow together. That way if you wanted to cover a lard area like the top of your room it would look perfect. Thanks for the awesome videos you have been inspiring me for a long time and I hope you have a blessed day!
Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words! That is definitely something I want to try doing. Being that these are 24v, i think power wise they would look just fine having 1 injection point at the beginning of the 10 meter run. Hopefully I will be able to include that in a follow up video!
Jump in. You'd be surprised at how approachable it is and regardless of how much money you make/have you'll appreciate the crazy amount of savings. Also, you don't necessarily need to solder. Clip on connectors will solve for 90% of all joining solutions and the newer ones provide a close to seamless connection. You'd need a magnifying glass to tell. And if you didn't want to mess around with power supplys there are quality ready made solutions out there for even powering a single tiny strip all the way up to 16ft (depending on 30/60/120 of course. And you'll still see a 50% savings over Govee after buying diffusers and channels.
I’d love to see how multiple strips could be physically connected (and the technical electricity specs/adjustments needed). Would also love to see if the new Govee curtain lights could be upgraded with WLED.
Not sure if you are aware. However govee have just released on pre order the neon wall lining rope light ( this was released in the last 24hrs) so they have started to show other ways of using the rope lights around the house.
This is such an incredible and simple walk through of a moderate level modification to a good product. I might be sold on these strips for my bedroom. Would love to see your suggested uses video that was mentioned at the end there.
Hahaha... I just bought this strip a couple days ago and definitely did not plan for it to go around my desk. I was a little confused that that's what the marketing was centered around, but figured it's just an led strip, right? I just put it on my wall as a decoration, but now kinda regret not doing something more unique, like wrapping it around an object (don't want to deal with ripping it off the wall now, the adhesive seems pretty strong).
Please for the love of the Gods stay consistent with wiring practices! Especially if you have colours that are already being used in the application, if you don't have black that's fine but use green, blue or brown for the negative/ground connection.
When you had the two strips connected to the esp32 and the esp 32 to the power supply, do you still need to plug in the usb? Doesn't the board get the power from the power supply through VIN and GND?
Hey Chris, awesome videos man! I really love quality of videos, as they inspired me for my own project. But I would like to ask for your guidance. And I think it would be helpful for other people as well I have a standing desk and monitor raiser. I'm thinking to use one 16ft strip to light up the desk and monitor raiser Question: Can we cut this strip in the middle and resolder it back but extending it with cords, so there would be a gap in the middle? I'm trying to light up 2 separate pieces of the desk and make it seamless Thank you in advance!
@@bohdantkachenko9505 thanks for the kind words! I have not personally tried it with this kit but my guess would be that you can. I think the solder points are close to 2 feet apart so that might be an issue though if things don't line up nicely.
@@ChrisMaherDIY Thank you for the prompt reply! If I'm lucky enough and the soldering point is close to the place where I need to cut it, how can I find it? I had another idea just to cut out the silicone diffuser and use the actual strip facing the desk to make it somehow seamless but the result won't be the best as with cutting and extending with wires
Would love to see a follow up and possible ways to integrate this into triggered events... maybe like a Arduino with motion sensor... so you walk into a room or up to your desk then these lights come on, or any other ideas and tutorials would be great!
Great video. Would be awesome to see how you’d use these to light up hot toy and statue displays. Shelving units that collector use can be 48x72 and they use two of them; so getting a continuous string of led to work with shelving would be cool to see. That way each part of the shelf could be isolated into a specific color that matches their setup. Cheers.
Thanks for watching! At some point I do want to do a epic display case lighting video. If done right, it can often time be the main attraction in a room. Its on my long list of projects I want to do!
What’s the point in making a separate controller? Seems like a lot of extra work considering you can just plug and play with the app. Yes there’s certain niche cases like you said, but in most cases just get a longer set if you want a larger portion to be “seamless”. TLDR: unless you have a niche diy need, the regular software works fine. It doesn’t do certain very specific effects and it has a few limitations but not any that most won’t be fine with.
100% agree. Govee does very well because they make good products and their app is full of features. However, WLED software has a huge following and is in my opinion the best.
Because you’re limited to whatever the longest they provide is. The controller is preset to handle the amount of LED’s the regular rgb strip has and nothing more. If you want more than 16.4 ft, you have to go with WLED.
I think these lights are fantastic. I have just started to move away from HUE. And slowly changing everything out. One thing I would love to see you do is a video on the outdoor Neons. They look great as well but I need a 15m run but they only come in 10 and 20. So would love to see if something could be done with these.
@CrowdContr0l consider they build 99.5% of the stuff we take for granted, yeah! I would be more concered with mongs that supposedly lead us and are doing stuff for our interests. I mean, you could ask do I trust big tech like Google over China. Nope, they are both doing the same thing. Just that one is accepted over the other. Shame you cant post pictures on here. Hue is made in china 😂😂😂😂
Thanks for watching! I have not tried it but for sure something I want to. I hope to do a follow up video with creative ways these can be used around the house.
Hey Chris, another great video!!! Thanks for showing us this light strip. I’m interested in more ways to use this strip around the house video when you can get around to it 😊
Hello Chris, first off, great video! You really inspired me to try new things with this video. I have a question that hopefully you would have an answer to. Do you know if the ESP32 module will work with the Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2? I would like to install a permanent lighting fixture outside my house that I can automate to illuminate in different set of colors during certain holidays like Christmas, Halloween, Independence Day, etc through Home Assistant. I'm sure I can use the default Govee controller to do all this as well, but I'd prefer HA to control everything for me.
I have an idea ! I’m a Drummer, what if you made this to go on each drum of the drum set individually , buy make it run continuous ( jump) from drum to drum and run bass drum seperate. ?
Yes please make another video. Also how much does it cost to do all that to the gocee lights. Buying the chips and such along with the price of the lights.
Just bought three using your link for a shed to office conversion. Going to put them behind crown moulding. I’m assuming WLED will work with three strips? Also - what are you thoughts about how bright the strip is? I couldn’t find data around output. My plan is for this to replace can lights (in combination with floor lamps and task lighting)
As always, I enjoy watching all of your videos. Could you make a follow up on the Govee desk LED’s showing how to cut and extend, or if this is even possible?
You're right in my head with all your lighting. I love accent/architectural lighting and you are right in my wheelhouse. I use WLED a lot, but there are times when I'd like some Govee sequences as well. I've been thinking, if there was a way to have a diode on the data line maybe, so you could leave both the ESP and Govee pieces connected full time and not have to physically switch between the 2, if that makes sense. Obviously both can be powered down in their respective apps, so maybe it could work?
All your videos are super appreciated and very informative/professional/thought provoking! You have taught me a lot. Have you ever tried this same process with any of the other Govee RGBIC products other than the Permanent Outdoor Lights? I attempted the same with one of their Neon Rope Lights and so far have only been able to get the first few LEDs to light up, but when I tried it on an M1, things seemed to work fine.
Hmm, now I’m curious if you could get a similar effect with a generic diffuser and LED strip with a similar downward-facing trick for that seamless diffusion-but at a lower cost 🤔
Love this video, at 1:49 my heart still trying to cope with you cutting the cable. By 5:17 my head started spinning trying to figure out how you knew which wire was which end to what end was what this that 😵💫. At 6:28 i was on awe by 6:54 headache set on by 7:40 my head exploded. 🥴 so many letter were said im lost 😂 😂😂. Love your content i love lights. Lol Could you just sell me yours. Lol😂
Are there any plans for a video on non-addressable LED strips for a 'down to earth' room lighting setups, substituting traditional lights where raves aren't a nightly occurrence?
I want to know how to put multiple strips of these to use as Christmas lights without brightness degradation. I can only hook up two to each other before having negative effects.
I have had 2 of these already and I made sure to be careful with them. However they are not very durable. After about 1 week of usage the same half of the light strip stopped working completely.
If you gonna go the WLED route just ditch govee entirely. Cheaper just to buy addressable strips by the 16 to 32 foot spool. Besides Govees app is absolute trash, it has some rather odd API locks on it.
Hey man, I love this video, but do you know how to get WLED working with the PRO version of this strip? The wiring is a bit different, there’s a 4th wire, completely bare with no shielding. Unsure how to get that working in wled yet.
sometimes the 4th is just a backup data wire, so you can squish it into the data output of your controller. Depends on what IC they use in this version, maybe worth a try.
So what looks better these govee rope lights or led diffuser channels with cob led lights and seperate power supply and controller? This govee package comes in 5 meters in a plug and play setup so unless the diffuser channel looks much better in terms of light quality and spotless effect etc then doesn't it make sense just to buy these? I just ordered the shallow V shape muzata channels with cob leds, athom controller and mean well power supplies but now im thinking this govee product is better and easier.
So we can "hack" any consumer led system just like that, like any led strip that come with a more rigid setup and the like? We don't need to diy the all diffusion system! Just find out your channel and this is amaising!
Interested how many can be linked end to end. Looking for a solution to put lights under the eaves of the front of my house. Low profile lights up all year for all holidays is nice.
The method of reversing the strip in the diffusion must reduce the light output by a lot...maybe as much as 90%. What do you think? Is product only suitable for accent designs or could it be used for some general illumination, albeit in a limited way?
odd question but the govee M1 strips have 4 connection points...... I have many left ove M1 strips from cutting. The govee cobtroller only has 3 wires,... red, white, black. do you know which wire goes to the M1 pads? thanks in advance. love the videos

When you had the two strips connected to the esp32 and the esp 32 to the power supply, do you still need to plug in the usb? Doesn't the board get the power from the power supply through VIN and GND?
10:30 yessir, please do
Hey Chris, awesome videos man! I really love quality of videos, as they inspired me for my own project. But I would like to ask for your guidance. And I think it would be helpful for other people as well
I have a standing desk and monitor raiser. I'm thinking to use one 16ft strip to light up the desk and monitor raiser
Question:
Can we cut this strip in the middle and resolder it back but extending it with cords, so there would be a gap in the middle? I'm trying to light up 2 separate pieces of the desk and make it seamless
Thank you in advance!
@@bohdantkachenko9505 thanks for the kind words! I have not personally tried it with this kit but my guess would be that you can. I think the solder points are close to 2 feet apart so that might be an issue though if things don't line up nicely.
@@ChrisMaherDIY
Thank you for the prompt reply!
@@ChrisMaherDIYI for one would like to see a video about that. Thanks. 🙏🏻
YES for the follow up video! I bought one of these strips just because it was "cheap", and I don't even have a gaming setup, lol!
Thanks for the video. What is the added value of using the domestic controller with wled preinstalled over the ESP32?
I think these lights are fantastic. I have just started to move away from HUE. And slowly changing everything out.
One thing I would love to see you do is a video on the outdoor Neons. They look great as well but I need a 15m run but they only come in 10 and 20. So would love to see if something could be done with these.
You trust random Chinese company over Philips? Good luck.
Chris - could you connect 3 16 foot strips together and use wled? Would there be a power injection issue? Curious if you tried that yet.
Thanks for watching! I have not tried it but for sure something I want to. I hope to do a follow up video with creative ways these can be used around the house.
With 50ft and only 2A, you're definitely going to need injection. Maybe if you keep the brightness really low.
These look great I have to get two sets one for each of my sons gaining desks.
Yes! I love this episode. I would love to use something like this on my bike or car. Do you think it’s possible???
Would like to see the follow up video with top 5 uses! 👍
Great video as always, appreciate the breakdown. However I am confused what's the difference between the two WLED boards shown? Was it just a choice?
Have you considered making the follow-up about other ideas for them?
I have a question! Finally you made work just connecting just the LED JUST by self?
It's a shame they're so expensive, looks like a nice set of lights
Sometimes, you really get what you pay for. Tons if “cheap” leds out there, this is not cheap.
Govee’s products are all overpriced
Just bought three using your link for a shed to office conversion. Going to put them behind crown moulding. I’m assuming WLED will work with three strips?
Also - what are you thoughts about how bright the strip is? I couldn’t find data around output. My plan is for this to replace can lights (in combination with floor lamps and task lighting)
Are they extendable?
Not through the govee app but with WLED you can pretty much do whatever you want!
Yes a follow up would be illuminating!
Yes, I would love to see a follow up video on what other interesting uses for around the house 😊
Love the video...especially the closing music...what is the title?
Can these be used outside like around a Hot tub? are they water proof?
All your videos are super appreciated and very informative/professional/thought provoking! You have taught me a lot. Have you ever tried this same process with any of the other Govee RGBIC products other than the Permanent Outdoor Lights? I attempted the same with one of their Neon Rope Lights and so far have only been able to get the first few LEDs to light up, but when I tried it on an M1, things seemed to work fine.
Hmm, now I’m curious if you could get a similar effect with a generic diffuser and LED strip with a similar downward-facing trick for that seamless diffusion-but at a lower cost 🤔
Thx Chris, absolutely love the Govee products! Please do a follow up on other applications for these. 👍🏻
Thanks so much for watching and thanks for the feedback!!
Your videos have been instrumental when I designed my lights and LEDs for my new house. Thank you so much, you have taught me so much!
Lol
Could you just sell me yours.
I’d like to see what ideas you have for their use. Also what about the Govee Neon strip lights? I would like to see what WLED can do with that one.
Since you mentioned you’re from Minnesota. Every time k am driving and I see house with govee I think of yours lol. Cool stuff brother thx
I guess it would also be very easy for them to also make an outdoor (water proof) version, I love that the adhesive is already on the strip
I wanna find the silicone diffuser designed to hold the leds upside down. I want a roll of it.
Can these be used outdoors?
Brilliant. I love your channel you are so talented. I have this desk strip and the diffused look is fantastic.
Bro, I absolutely love your videos, but please could you make a video about how to run LEDs over cat6 or POE?
Yes I would like a video on different uses
I would love to know how to hook this up to the DMX protocol.
Can I connect my M1 strip with this neon rope ? And use it as one strip with the govee controller ? 😊 thank you so much
So we can "hack" any consumer led system just like that, like any led strip that come with a more rigid setup and the like? We don't need to diy the all diffusion system!
Just find out your channel and this is amaising!
Another Great video. I would be interested to see how you can use these in other areas.
Would this work with an ESP82 instead of an ESP32? 3:19
Will the power supply and wled be able to handle 3 of these cut and spliced together in one long run?
Thanks for watching! I think 3 would be pushing it. I haven't tried it but my guess is if it did work you would have to turn the brightness way down!
Excellent video if I could buy these direct from you after you’ve done all the work, I would totally do it.
Can you use them as an ambilight behind a Monitor for example ?
As normal excellent video..... The only issue I have is that the Govee lights are just too expensive, but heck yes make another video with these!!! :)
May I recommend turning the gain down on your microphone slightly and backing away from it a few inches.
Love your content! Keep up the great work!
Great video! Audio cuts out early during the outry and there's even a spot of your original mic noise sneaking in around 11:50. Easter egg? :-)
For sure want to see a follow up on what you would do with these!
So, does WLED work with iOS and other govee lights? I would assume yes for the other lights, as it's +/- and DIN
Interested how many can be linked end to end. Looking for a solution to put lights under the eaves of the front of my house. Low profile lights up all year for all holidays is nice.
Being able to string them together is interesting...wonder how long they'd survive outside. Hmmm.......
The method of reversing the strip in the diffusion must reduce the light output by a lot...maybe as much as 90%. What do you think? Is product only suitable for accent designs or could it be used for some general illumination, albeit in a limited way?
Can you suggest a setup for under an outdoor metal store canopy. We are using 3 WLED 16 foot strips clipped together and feed with power from one end.
I would really like to see a followup to this video
odd question but the govee M1 strips have 4 connection points...... I have many left ove M1 strips from cutting. The govee cobtroller only has 3 wires,... red, white, black. do you know which wire goes to the M1 pads? thanks in advance. love the videos
Do you think this would work with the Gledopto WLED Esp32 LED Controller?
WAGO needs to sponsor this channel
Lol I really wish they would! Wagos are not cheap!!
Yes, would definitely like to see a follow up video
Would love to see another video on these!
Idea could you make it so that the lights mimic the colors on your screen? Like an ambient light?
Yes, I believe he did a video on that
