8 String guitar in Drop D sounds mean | Ibanez RGMS8

  • I wanted to see what I could come up with tuning this low. I think it works but I had more trouble than usual getting a decent mix and you definitely have to cater your riffs to the pitch, not sure I would go much lower than this but I really enjoyed the experiment, I hope you do too.

    I was once with a mindset of tuning my guitar lowest possible thinking it was the key to heaviness. 15 years ago, had my Ibanez gio and would ask for bass player friends when they change their string to give me the ones I could fit into my guitar tuning nuts. But I learned that the bass guitar has it's place in the mix for a reason, and keeping my guitars in drop A and B, they give me what I need. I could go even lower then this since I have digitech drop pedal (a whole octave) but it losses on the heaviness. Guitar is to cut, grind, rip, scratch while the bass to fill in all the empty parts with heaviness in the lower spectrum. One of those bass tones I see as the pinnacle is on the static-x album regeneration (especially on accelerate song). This is my opinion but I tried both aspects and that is the conclusion.

    • @jjrrecording
      @jjrrecording  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I pretty much agree completely, a proper heavy 'guitar tone' in a mix is as much about the bass as it is the guitar and how well they blend. I do think tuning this low has it's place though, it's not really about trying to get heavier so much as about creating a darker atmosphere that you can't get with a higher tuning, but I prefer higher tunings because they tend to sound much more aggressive, it just depends on the situation and what feel you're going for

    Honestly the super low tunings only works when done right. It would probably work better with pretty clean guitar parts since it has the bass and all the high strings. Rob scallion is one I can think of who uses it well for pretty stuff and it works really well. Not saying this isn’t cool. The low notes just get muddy and messy and kinda get boring riding on the low string so much.

    • @jjrrecording
      @jjrrecording  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're not wrong, it's definitely pretty muddy but I don't think it's as much to do with the tuning as it is with the fact I don't have the knowledge/skill for mixing haha. At this point I could probably get a clearer/better mix but I still don't have a clue what I'm doing haha. I actually quite like the drone/riding the low string vibe but I can definitely see your point and I think if I were to redo this song I'd add a bit more variation. How are you liking the RGMS8? I'm considering upgrading to an 8-string myself but I have no idea what guitar to go for. My local guitar store never has any 8-strings in stock and thus I never get the chance to try one out. I have tiny hands and are wondering how much of a problem that is lol. I own a 7-string Schecter Hellraiser and I'm quite happy with it, but I think maybe the neck of an 8-string would be too thick for me. Also, I see your guitar has fanned frets, does that make playing any easier (or perhaps more difficult)? I'm sorry for all the questions. Great playing by the way, although that should go without saying!❤

    • @jjrrecording
      @jjrrecording  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I really like the RGMS8, it's a great playing guitar especially for it's price range. The neck is surprisingly thin for an 8 string but Ibanez generally have very thin necks. As for the fanned frets, the only time I ever really even notice them is playing a barre chord at the first fret where the angle is at it's steepest but I wouldn't say it makes it any harder to play. It does make for more of a stretch on the lowest strings though. I think the Hellraiser is 26.5 scale length which isn't much less than the RGMS8's low string scale at 27.2 and is actually longer than the high string scale which is 25.5. Looking at the stats there isn't much difference in neck thickness either. I think if you can play comfortably on a 7 you should be able to adjust to an 8. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

    Hi again! One more question :)
    Is it comfortable to play the multi-scale guitar? (I mean the scary fan-frets, is it hard to point with fingers to right position on the fretboard?)
    I can't decide what to choose: the RG8 or RGMS8 🤷 :)
    Because I never played multi-scale, and my town is too small to go in the music store and try it myself (the only one music store has no 8 string guitar at all , and the 7 string guitar too :) )
    Btw. if we dive into physics the multi-scale guitars are much closer to physics of sound (normal strings tension distribution etc. ) than guitars with standard fretboard. This fact is confusing me too - physics-friendly guitar but absolutely unknown and brand-new (of course for me :) ) VS standard guitar like RG8 but with potential issues with strings tension/gauge due to their standard fretboard 🤷 Btw never played both guitars ☝️
    Sorry for my English :)

      Hi, no problem, you're english is very good. As for the fanned frets, I honestly don't even notice them when playing most of the time. At first it can be a bit weird visually, but it doesn't actually feel any different (to me at least) The only real difference it makes is the slightly bigger stretch between frets on the low strings due to the scale length.Overall I wouldn't worry about it being a factor to be honest, it feels basically the same to play, just looks a bit weird haha.
      Thank you for the kind words, I wish you luck in making your decision \m/

      @@jjrrecordingHi bro! Thanks for your advice and recommendations!
      I finally bought a RG8 (white) ! A good guitar, I love the Ibanez. I tuned the tone for a couple of days to make it look like your tone. I learned that I can't just add gain and get a good sound :) like on a 6 and 7 string guitar :) I need to add a little overdrive before the main amp! (I use Gojira like you)
      And only then (possibly) can I get a good djent :) but before that I need to play with the settings knobs for a long time :) Now the tone is similar to yours (but still far away :) )
      By the way! My friends and I drank Ballantines (my favorite scotch) and high-quality сrimеаn cognac in the park and listened to Animals As Leaders, Messhugah and your compositions that I downloaded from TH-cam. We listened to it through the middle+ JBL speaker. So, my friends asked me to play YOUR music! @@jjrrecording By the way, thanks for the advice! I tried to suppress (cut) the LOW frequencies BEFORE Gojira and the tone became more readable! Thank you!
      Also inside Gojira, I previously used a light Overdrive (OD) as a preamp before the main amplifier, now I turned it off and instead use the same little Distortion DRT) and the sound became even clearer and more readable, sharper when djent! (the guitar seems to "growl" 🦁!!!)
      _(but less meaty / beefy, because it is the OD preamp that gives us the beef. But I fixed this when I slightly increased the Gain in the main amplifier)_ .
      This game is interesting - searching for the ideal tone :)))

I used Archetype Nolly for this, it was the 'Nolly's Murmur' preset with a lot of the low end removed from the first 3 bands of the multi band eq and I'm using the 'Down with the thickness' preset in GGD Cali Cabs. Thanks dude, I used a set of NYXL 10-80 gauge strings for this, and I'm pretty sure Ernie Ball have a set of 10-80 as well. I did find that even with an 80, the lowest string was fairly loose. I had to pick softer than I usually would which helped but even then it tends to rattle easily. You can get thicker strings too, I've seen individual strings up to 84 but they're usually out of stock here. I don't know if any of that helps, but good luck, keep trying \m/

      Thanks, the thing around the headstock is just a cord from an old hoodie, it's there to dampen the strings above the nut and stop them making noise, especially during staccato parts. Hi, I think a set of .10-.85 should be pretty good for D1. Obviously there's a lot of personal taste involved when it comes to string gauge but I had a set of .10-.80 on here and it was fine, but I did find that I had to pick softer than usual to accommodate the lower tension, but I do tend to pick really hard so I think an .85 would be great for this range.

    • @jjrrecording
      @jjrrecording  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used a set of 10-80 on this song, I would recommend going thicker than that for D1, maybe an 85, as I found the 80 to be overly loose and prone to rattle, definitely playable, but I'll be going thicker next time I tune this low. For avoiding muddiness though I would recommend EQ to remove a fair bit of low end from the tone, that's the main culprit for mud, leave the low end to the bass haha, it's the biggest thing that helped me start getting clearer mixes.

    I think it sounds pretty good. I play in DGDGCFAD on my 8 string so I'm familiar with this. I'm curious what you do for bass. Is it a real bass that you're using or a VST? I do a thing where I have my regular 4 string bass tuned to DGDG, the same octave as the guitars, but then duplicate it and drop the second track down an octave. The regular bass track is just a high passed distorted thing, while the low track is a very low passed clean track. The high track is meant to be heard while the low track is meant to be felt, since the notes are pretty much nonexistent at that frequency. I think it works really well and fills in the low end nicely. I wish I had a good example to share, but the album I'm working on hasn't dropped yet. I did also duplicate the guitars and put them through different amp sims, one for a more mid focused tone for body, and a more trebly tone for note clarity.
    And for strings, since I see you were using a regular 9-80 set and they were a bit floppy on the low strings, I use regular D'Addario 9-42 strings and then a 68 and 95 from String Joy. I'm not sure what the shipping to Scotland is like, but it's a solid option. 👍

    • @jjrrecording
      @jjrrecording  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks, the bass in this is a 5 string tuned A D G C F, same octave as the guitar. That goes through Neural parallax for tone. I used to do a similar thing with the bass, split into two channels, one for high/distortion and one for low/clean tones, never tried lowering the octave on the clean track though. After I tried parallax though, I just found it much easier to get a tone I liked with that and thought it sounded better so that's what I'm using most of the time now.
      I've got the guitar up to drop E at the moment for some deathcore-ish stuff I'm writing but in the future I want to try some more super low stuff and I'll definitely look at a thicker gauge, 95 is a beast though haha. Thanks for the detailed comment, I appreciate it

Lastly, setting the buffer size as low as you can get away with helps cut down on latency. I hope some of that helps \m/

      I had latency problems until I realized my headphones should be plugged into the audio interface and not the computer’s jack. On both that crappy computer and my new one the latency was zero when plugged into the interface. My recording deal is janky so it’s probably not as difficult on the computer as a smart person’s setup. I honestly have no clue what I’m doing but I enjoy doing it so don’t take anything I just said as serious advice.

      @@13_cmi I haven't tried with headphones while playing actually but I don't have too much issue with roundtrip latency in general, but my computer just can't handle the amount of processing I have in a full mix context so the easiest solution is just to record without it haha
