@charlenes5 I have a Sunbeam 6 in 1 Multi Cooker that I got from the Harvey N Outlet Shop for $123 a few years ago. It has a pressure cooker setting plus slow cooker etc. I cook all sorts of Instant Pot recipes in it. I can't see any benefit in shelling put for an actual Instant Pot.

Greetings from Scotland Stacey. You are one of my favourite watches. I love your realness and your attempts to teach us how to cook in a budget. What I would like to know is why is someone like you having to purchase your cooking equipment? What are the cookware providers thinking of. I would love to see you receive lots of appliances and gadgets that you could test out for us. There are also things like aprons, dish towels, cutlery and utensils that you could be showcasing without having to purchase them yourself. Wake up appliance/cookware companies and kit this real cook out with all of the items we would like to see her review. She isn’t a fluffy influencer who just rates everything as good. She is real. X

I did the same thing when I first got mine. 😂 I was trying to cook some veggie chili. You must remember that For any new tool there is always a learning curve and learning experience which is normally frustrating due to inexperience and lack of knowledge. Do you remember when you first got your new cell phone? 😂 Anyway Its good you are videoing so when you master your IP you can look back and get a good laugh. Now I use mine for everything. I been around pressure cookers all my life over 60 years. Remember the dangers? I Was so happy when I got The IP. It really does work as an all in one tool. You can saute/stir fry/boil/slowcook/pressure cook/and bake in it. Dont give up. I hope you figure it out and have fun using it. Hang in there.😊

I have a similar model but 6 qt. I only use 4 functions, saute, pressure, slow, and keep warm. My slow cook function works perfectly. I only use custom and none of the presets in that section. I also have a 3qt (original style model) that works perfectly too. I have a feeling it's how you're pressing and/or turning the middle knob to set it up and then press start. Funny though, I haven't ever checked or watched the pre-cook, cooking and whatever the third set of lights are. LOL I'll check next time I slow cook and come back to let you know.
I watched a you tuber "Tried, tested and True" who said she didn't use her instant pot either for slow cooking as it didn't reach the temp she required. I took my thermometer and tested it at both high and low and it came to temp and stayed no problem. When I'm making broth of any type, (ie: your chicken soup), I pressure cook first, let it naturally release completely and let it stay on keep warm a couple of hours..
My suggestion, keep fiddling with it, it's new. :)

@@carolyngrayston6889 What a good idea. Your way using the keep warm function should satisfy Stacey’s need for the chicken to remain in the broth and have chance to develop flavour. It is a brilliant bit of kit. Xx

I purchased an instant pot several months ago. What a fantastic bit of kit. Rice cooks brilliantly using the pressure function, not the rice function. 3 minutes on high pressure, 10 mins natural release, then pressure release. Wonderful. Dried beans, 20 minutes. I could go on and on. It is also so quiet. Enjoy. Xx

Hi dear Stacy, and everyone reading,
I am also an IP owner, who was quite frustrated with the same issue earlier. (I own a duo evo +)
After some searching I've found a video on YT, a lady explained why slowcooking is not really working on IP, different heating and insulation, unfortunately I don't remember the source...
She suggested to use the slow cooking function on IP on high temperaure setting as if it would be the low setting on a normal slow cooker, or in a recipe, cook on low for 5 hrs means 5 hrs on high in case of IP.
I've tried it twice so far, the recipes worked good. Give it a try maybe.. 🙂
PS: my todler fell in love with your crumpets, THANK YOU! ❤

I am so pleased to meet someone like me who gets really brassed off when equipment doesn’t work as it is supposed to and you take the item back . Too many people accept shortcomings and don’t do anything about the problem so nothing improves. I do have a very large Russell Hobbs slow cooker and it is very efficient.

I often make chicken noodle soup in my Instant Pot in under an hour. The Instant Pot shines in pressure cook mode. Most people don't use the slow cooker function. It makes great yogurt, saute mode, but not great slow cooker. I use a slow cooker and not the Instant Pot to cook in the slow cooker function. As an older person, I have used electric pressure cookers since they came out (owned 5 different brands). I use it for what it is designed for... pressure cooking. It makes the best soups and stews, it just does it as a pressure cooker. I currently own 2 different sizes and use both for everything.

When you want to use the slow cooker in these pots you need to put it on sear till it's bubbling. Then put it on slow cook function.
Slow cookers heat on the sides of the insert, multi function pots heat from the bottom, so when on slow cook it takes masses of time to come to temperature. Pre-heating on sear fixes this problem.

Hi Stacy! When slow cooking with my Instant Pot Pro I ignore the preheating display. Just set it making sure your your cook time is correct and the lid is set on release. You still have to use enough liquid or it will not reach propper temperature. To speed up the process I sometimes use the saute setting for 10 minutes then cancel and reset to the slow cook function. The Instant Pot only heats from the bottom unlike a slow cooker which also heats from the sides. Also I found some recipes require the heat set a the more or high setting and will take longer. I know your frustration... My kitchen is small and my Instant Pot is a great space saver. I use it at least 3-5 times per week with extra pots and glass lids made for it. Good luck and many blessings.

Probably not what any IP owner is wanting to hear, but after a ton of reviewing it's partially why I settled on a Ninja Foodi SmartLid Multi Cooker (purchased in NZ for $499, which is a good chunk of money, but has been so worth it). It's been a great asset to my kitchen, we're in the middle of a self-build so getting a meal on the table can be really challenging, and the Ninja is helping me to recreate so much of what you're showing us in your videos.

Just watched your video on the instant pot pro, I really felt your pain, I use my instant pot all the time, it’s the 8 and has the stainless steel drum. The biggest problem I encounter isn’t with the slow cook function, but …. just to add to your woes, it’s the food burn error that comes up each time I make something that has legumes or is a bit thicker than a clear soup consistency. Like you, I had a Russell Hobbs and loved it, but unfortunately it gave up on me. I’ll be following and hoping your new instant pot lives up to what it’s designed to do. Love your stuff, you’re my happy place to go when I’m feeling down. 😊

Yes, it's a learning curve. I couldn't tell you how long I have had mine. I have a 6 QT and an 8-quart. A couple of the first ones that came out. There is absolutely no way you can use an IP add a slow cooker. Mine are not as fancy as yours and I have no idea how to use yours. When I make chicken broth I use the pressure cooker function on a lower temperature and set what about 2 hours. Ps: put in chicken feet if you can, gelatinous. Once you get the hang of the IP you will use it more often. Just wait till you make a cheesecake in it.

  • @mrsrichter8586
    @mrsrichter8586 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

Hi Stacey. My brain is trying to figure out why that IP is not functioning as a slow cooker . . . I think the difference is a slow cooker has a "pottery" dish/liner which retains the heat as the heating element below it switches on and off. This is most noticeable after switching a slow cooker off, the "pottery dish" retains the heat and keeps the food warm for at least an hour afterwards before it starts cooling off. With our intermittent rolling blackouts here in South Africa I use my slow cooker a lot because I know it will continue to cook or at least keep the food warm whilst the power is out for a couple of hours. But the IP has a thin stainless steel lining/pot that needs to be constantly heated or else it will get cold quickly. Perhaps you should research at what temperature a slow cooker operates on high or low, and research what temperatures your IP functions are, then choose the closest temp to match an actual slow cooker. Nonetheless, you will never regret buying a slow cooker, they make doing other things in life so much easier, like the gardening or housework, whilst you know your dinner will be taken care of in the kitchen and you don't have to keep running back to check on it.
Just one more interesting thing I found out about slow cookers, the really old ones used to have a low "keep warm" temp (especially for making cheeses etc) that the new ones don't have any more, something to do with food regulations, but if you can get your hands on one of the oldies you'll be a lucky lass indeed.

I feel your pain......I had the same disappointing experience with Instant Pot. I got it to work on slow cook "once" by moving the lid switch to "seal" not vent as the book says, but haven't got it past pre-heat since. Once you get over the fact that it won't slow cook it still has lots of good functions. It cooks so quietly and doesn't hiss and roar like other pressure cookers. Soup function and boiled egg functions are good as is Sous Vide (maybe this would work as slow cook? not sure). The conclusion I came to after doing some google research is that the pressure cooker will do everything a slow cooker will do, only in "fast" mode. I'm sure once you learn it's capabilities you will enjoy your new cooker, just takes a little experimentation. Good luck, keep smiling.

So glad you slept on it and feel better about it the day after as you say, the pressure cooker function is most important and as a chef, there’s always a ‘work around’ if you give it a think which you were able to do. I found watching you tube videos way more educational in the workings of the Instant Pot than the instruction booklet myself and have learned so many things! One of those is cooking whole chickens quickly from frozen just amazes me! I then save the broth in a zip lock in the freezer until I’m ready to can a batch. The concentrated flavour is fantastic!

Hi Stacey, I have a nice size slow cooker. It is a Zip brand. 6.5 liters, and oval. It fits heaps in. I use it to make soup and all in. It's been great. I have had it for a few years now, and I recommend this brand. I am sure I bought it from Briscoes. I see the warehouse have pressure cookers I like the look of, but they have a non-stick coating in the internal pot. I want a stainless-steel insert pot. Thanks again for another great video.

I love my IP but I've never used the slowcook function due to the bad reviews. I cook chicken stock with whole chooks all the time, pressure cook only.
Keep warm setting is for after the cooking period is finished, it doesn't affect the preheat or cooking stage. It defaults to "on" and is quite handy. P.S. I sold my slow cooker on Marketplace when I bought my IP, before I realised the slow cooker function was crap! I need to get a separate slow cooker but I'm not in a rush.

Even if I had the space on my bench I'll never buy another appliance. All I've ever needed is a good oven, a stand mixer and food processor. But I feel your joy and pain of unboxing a new thing. The anticipation of a seamless transition from one device to a new one when it drives you nearly to tears. In my most recent experience, I sat in a telephonic abyss for ages on a helpline only to realize it was all my stupid fault for not following the instructions. Anyway that's just what I'm like lol. Anyhow I totally agree with you about cooking with Teflon after watching the film Dark Waters (2019).

I thought maybe it worked properly with the new features. Im so sorry that it didn’t 😢 Slowcooker function has never been good. I never tried it because it was said it didnt keep a temperature for that. Ive never had problems with anything else but i normally ony use "pressure cook" and "saute". I dont use rice or soup either...i just use pressure cook" and the recipes ive used did the same. I love to "boil" eggs in it! One cup water, stack eggs on the rack, pressure cook 2 minutes, natural pressure release for 15 minutes. Ice bath and store in fridge...so handy! Beans from dry (no soak at all) totally cooked and out of pot in around half hour total time from heat up, pressure up to eating!

You can also use the inner pot on the eye as well. The only thing that I do differently is I hit the big silver button then click start. Not sure if that is a factor? I could feel your excitement, frustration and disappointment, I had thought of buying one with the air-fryer function but the reviews let me know that it wasn't going to suit our needs. For the poor lighting in my kitchen I bought some stick on lights that you push to turn on (from Kmart) and they come with a remote. I used sticky back velcro to attach them to my ceiling so its easy to replace the batteries (quality batteries last longet) and I use my longer handle spatula ( also from Kmart) to turn them on and off because I keep misplacing the remote 😅 they have made a huge difference.

I'm sorry you had such trouble with the Instant Pot! When I was at my stepdaughter's home, I was making dinner with the Instant Pot. I thought that cooking rice would be easy and quick...well, since I didn't read a recipe, it took FOREVER to boil the water before cooking the rice and then I didn't open it to remove the steam so the rice was very sticky. Sigh... Too much of a learning curve for me. So, I have a stovetop pressure cooker and a slow cooker. That's how I do it now. I share your disappointment in something that should be all-in-one and really isn't.

I love my IP, but slow cooking is not its best feature. In a regular slow cooker, the element wraps around the bowl. In the IP the heating element is on the bottom and slow cooking just doesn't work as well. It's great for rice and starting things with frozen chicken breasts. I use my regular slow cooker for slow cooker cooking. I love the stainless steel, the fact that you can get accessories - like a clear lid for sauteing, extra pots, and silicone lids for the pots for storing soups and stews right in the pot.

I bulk meal plan with my multi cooker. I have a Phillips All In One and it’s lowest time on manual is 2mins, but I know the Instant Pot on manual is zero minutes. I cook on manual with instant release - heap of carrots for 8minutes (depending on size cut), then whole baby potatoes 10mins, whole head of cauliflower 2mins, couple of heads of broccoli 2mins. So if you wanted to try this just adjust down 2mins. A lady on TH-cam I watched showed me her bulk food prep using the instant pot, the video is preparing foods for healthy meals - easy meal assembly, her channel is Lulu’s Way. Skip through to the food prep and I’m sure you’ll get some great tips. I put all my veg into meals and freeze.

I was overjoyed to see the excited glow on your face and hear it in your voice, and then...I was sad/mad with you for your disappointment. I know you wanted that "slow cooked flavor" and I wonder if you could achieve that by taking the bones and skin from the pressure cooked chicken, roast them in your oven (PS...I miss the spoon LOL) and then pressure cook those in a bit of your stock. I know it's a whole extra step but would allow you to get every last bit of goodness from that chicken. I ALWAYS do this when I make soup/stock, even though it takes me that much longer. I also throw in with the bones to be roasted a couple heads of garlic and an onion, and will also use the roasted garlic in my "final stock." My son in law has the Ninja 10 in 1 (I think that's the one) and it does everything except clean the bathroom! I was going to recommend that one but it isn't the size you want/need, as well as the inner pot/liner also has a "coating" (not teflon tho). I guess if you wanted true "old school" slow cooker you could always find yourself a big cast iron Dutch oven. ANYWAY...sorry for your disappointment, and I'm hoping you can find a way to make this work for your needs. Love & BIG HUGS to you & Husband!

      Hello, my friend :)
Yes, normally I would cook the chicken first, but as I was filming two videos that day, I just wanted to try the slow cook, leave, and forget type function. Every time I came back inside to check it I was like nah this doesn't seem right lol. I turned the camera on anyway. I have now had time to play with it and it is much better with a small volume of water at least I know that it won't slow cook large amounts of water as a normal slow cooker will.
All is not lost the rest of the machine is great and I have used it every single day since I got it. I hope you are well my friend, much love.

I have an earlier version (the Instant Pot Duo) but I’ve never been a fan of the slow cook function….tried a couple of time and since I have a couple of slow cookers so I just prefer to use them…. I mainly use the Instant Pot to make Yogurt, Pressure cooking here and there (but I don’t use the sauté mode….I find it to be too hot in my view and if anything is left on the bottom sometimes you get a Burn message 😕) …I’ve also used it to cook rice …. I don’t use the presets anymore …. I always just manually set it up…. To be honest I don’t use it a lot any longer…Been thinking of getting rid of it …I’m still up in the air…..By the time it comes up to pressure, cooks in the time allocated, and then it releases the pressure…most of the time It’s just as easy to use my oven or air fryer….from my perspective it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be 🤷🏼‍♀️ …. But I think maybe I’ll hang on to it and try out some of your pressure cooker recipes 😁….Good luck 😊

It's disappointing to hear the slow cooker function doesn't work as expected. I would feel the same.
