This will also happen if you have a particularly...pushy...male. They'll try to make with ANYTHING, males or females, and sometimes they'll jump to get away from them. This ALWAYS happens with micariff and sunset guppies for me.

Idk if it’s just me but it’s so impressive how much she cares for these fish. She literally noticed some were missing and have noticed routines and patterns in their movement it’s amazing

same here, 3 of my betas did that, 1 female & 2 males. I think they jumped because they wanna catches some insect? fyi, beta loves eating headless fly.
I am new to having bettas and I found out they can jump out so I quickly put the lid back on
It could have been instinctual. In the wild, bettas jump from shallow pond to shallow pond in the dry season.
A smaller fish tank size, temp, stress etc can encourage the behaviour, but unlike some other captive fish, the dang things have jumping in their genes, some of them will do it for the hell of it.
Super important to keep a lid on their tank.

Me and my family used to go to this restaurant which is actually above a lake and there were alot of fish. We can order fish there too. Whenever i'm done eating the fish, i gave the bones to the native fish living in the lake. They fight to get the corpse too 😂

One time my mom came back home to three fish on the ground, all dried up. It was assumed they had been there all day but no one was home to confirm. She decided to cut them open to see if they were pregnant (mollies) when she got to the third one, she saw a little bit of movement!! She put it back in the tank and it started swimming!! She lived another 4 years after that. It was all dried up and out at least an hour after my mom got home and still survived!!

Guppies and swordtails are known to react frantically when startled. Aside from hubger they will also jump out of a tank when startled or shocked by loud noise or rapid movements around them.

I’ve noticed this with my guppies, my snails don’t care about anything (their almost creepily chill) but my fish tend to react quickly when startled, they mostly do this when my hands get very close to the glass or I’m cleaning the tank (oddly enough my cats being near the glass doesn’t get any reaction, not even his clawing at the glass)

My baby betta did this over a year ago when he was only a few months old....his name is Ghostie so when walking in my room I joke around saying Ghostie did you disappear? I’ve found that smaller varieties of fish - guppies, tetras, and bettas are major hoppers compared to fish like fancy goldfish

It's okay if you have a good gap between the top of the tank and the water. 2 inches should prevent the majority of fish from being able to jump out.
Personally I wouldn't use an open top tank because my house really does not need that extra humidity.

This brings back a weird memory - I was around 7 years old and I won a pet fish at a carnival. We put it in a tank and I would check on in once every five minutes. In the afternoon, I checked on it and it was gone. Then I felt something wiggling under my foot… I think you can guess what happened next. I lifted my foot and screamed. My pet fish was wiggling on the ground. My dad ran over and put it back in the tank. The next day, it died. For the next 2 months I was extremely cautious where I stepped and for some reason I was scared to step out of my bed because for some reason I was always reliving the wiggling feeling under my foot 😣

One of my cousin's fish died like this. It was a bigger fish and it jumped behind the tank. It was the first time it had happened so they didn't think to check there. A couple months later, there was an awful smell. When another fish jumped out, it was found behind the tank along with the decomposing body of the other. Needlees to say, every time a fish goes missing now they check there first.

That's actually so gruesome. I remember when this happened once when I was a kid. So sad.
My snail was trying to escape from his tank for food. The crazy thing was I was in the midst of feeding my snail. The food was in front of snails face but still proceeded to turn the opposite way till about 5 mins later it turned around. (Ivy is the snail name.) I have one ivory mystery snail that I kept since it was tiny. Still have it after about 2-3 years.

Its so sad when pets die, even when they are small. I loved my praying mantis. He only lived a few months in captivity, probably because I got him as an adult. When he died I cried. My parents knew I was sad but I don't think they understood how I could cry over an insect. Rip Claw. I loved u so much.

Rather recently I couldn't find my betta fish while rushing to leave the house. The lid was secure and everything was fine. But the more I looked I realized in the grass decor there was something strange. The color was similar but a bit off. Then I realized that 'grass' was fins. It was my fish, he had passed away the following night. :( It's disheartening, but all you can do is know you gave them a good life to the best of your abilities.
i remember bringing home tadpoles and was super excited to bring them up and watch them grow, but i went to stay at a friends house for a couple nights and they turned into frogs faster than i expected and we forgot to put a lid on the tank, so they jumped out and fried on the carpet😭

When I was little one of my Betta fish jumped out the tank while I was in school. I was so incredibly heartbroken to find it on the floor, it was unfortunately long gone. My big brother had to do the dirty job to clean the mess up while I was crying in the next room :')

I had a betta fish when I was little, too. I remember one morning I woke up and the fish’s tank was on the floor. I had kicked it when I was sleeping and the fish fell on the floor along with its tank. I screamed for my mom and she was cleaning it up when all of a sudden she starts screaming because right when she was taking it to the bathroom, it jumped up towards her face. The fish somehow lived, and since the tank was broken, it lived out its life in a cup near the sink. I’m beginning to remember all the poor fish that faced the wrath of 8 year old me…
My mom owned guppies when she was my age so I’ve heard they can be quite the jumpers 😢 so sorry for your loss! Bettas are absolutely NOTORIOUS for jumping out of their tanks as well. I remember I lost a really pretty blue male betta when I was cleaning his tank and the female betta in the tank next to him jumped out in the middle of the night a couple days later 😢
My betta did that, along with my watchman goby. Thank God I was home. The betta landed in a shotglass and was in there for at least 15 minutes when I found him, and he was okay. But the goby fell four feet and was there for longer. My cat found him and was sniffing him lol. He was fine but lost a lot of scales. So weird
The betta aimed for the shotglass. They like doing that in a specific season, jumping from puddle to puddle in rainy season

In the wild they jump a lot. Especially males (to further spread their genetics). The furthest a Trinidadian male was recorded to swim from birth in one study was 800 yards (2400ft, or 731.52m). Keep in mind in the wild in the majority of places they’re constantly swimming against a relatively strong current in comparison to their size/strength as they tend to live in streams. As long as your water quality is good, they were probably just following natural instinct.
This wild behaviour and swimming pattern is also why it’s recommended not to keep them in any less than 10 gallons. There are very very few common aquatic animals that can be kept in 5 gallons, and no healthy fish that can be kept properly in less than 5 gallons although some invertebrates can.
A lot of people who don’t understand guppies as well think that the size of the fish dictates tank size, however that’s not the case. With fish like guppies they will use up tank space very effectively. I have a 20g wild guppy tank and am considering upgrading them to my 40g eventually because of how active they are.
Something similar happened to me last night , so i was cleaning my betta fish's tank and after i was done , i was trying to place her in her tank with a small utensil and SHE JUMPED OUT!! On the floor!! I was so damn freaked out , screaming while trying to pick her up but she was slippery! So my dad came hurrying and lifted her and put her back in her tank.. it was a big heart attack for me, and the twist is that betta wasnt even mine , my friend gave it to me for a month to take care of it since they were abroad , ( i have my own betta too) and , i swear im never repeating the mistake of using a small utensil ever again!!

I highly doubt they were looking for food. What I suspect is that there is a particularly “pushy” male. They will harass the other fish so much that they’ll literally jump to escape. No idea why this didn’t immediately come to her since the water and temp quality is good and theyre being fed

This is why i prefer rimmed tanks rather than the more popular rimless tanks; since the plastic rims have an interior flap of sorts, it's far easier to add a tight fitting lid. I currently have a 40 gallon with a diy polycarbonate lid, haven't had a single fish or shrimp escape since it fits on so tightly

When I was a kid, we had a pond with koi. There was a great big white one called Dick (named after Moby Dick), and one day whilst I was sitting in the kitchen I noticed something moving in the corner of my eye, only to find that Dick was somehow halfway down the garden and on the steps to the patio! Being a kid and not knowing what to do, I just yelled “DICK’S OUT OF THE POND!!!” and my dad came rushing with a towel to pick him up and put him back in the pond. Miraculously, he survived and was fine! He was older than me and was still alive by the time we moved house when I was 13. We reckon that a heron must’ve gotten past the netting and picked him up before dropping him because he was too big and heavy to carry!

It is very painful to find your pets dead, especially when you love them very much... Sometimes, I'm really afraid to get close to animals or people...
omg! this happened to our guppies too! around 8-10 of them jumped of, and we found them after like 3 to 4 days. It was a tragedy 😔

Short story: our boss have an aquarium at our office. It also serves as a divider between him and my other co worker. He had this fish who's hobby is hiding on the shells / plants so when he'd gone missing, we thought maybe he's hiding or maybe he died and the other fish ate him.
Buuttt for daysss, there's been a bad odor coming from my co workers area.
Daysss later, when she was cleaning, she found the dead fish in her drawer.
