L's first gambit where Light kills an L standin on live television that was only broadcast in Tokyo narrowed down the search a lot. From there it was just Light getting cocky and making mistakes. All he had to do to win was just sit in his room writing names, not get himself directly involved in the investigation. That's like rule #1 of getting away with your crimes. Don't help the people who are trying to catch you.
L is one of my utmost favourite character in deathnote. deathnote 2017 pretty much made L dirty. fans don't have to agree with me, the way L in the live action doesn't feel or act like the L in the anime. they made my L a huge crybaby which the real L never do.
