As someone who knew Mr.Doss and his story. I must say that he would not want all the attention. Desmond wanted ALL of the credit to go to GOD. He refused to have this movie done until the movie gave GOD credit for his actions on that ridge. We rarely spoke about it. Because he didn't want people to praise him. But instead to praise GOD. He will sleep until the resurrection .And finally people who never knew what he did will find out what faith is. And how important it is.

hundreds if not thousands would have attended this funeral had Hacksaw Ridge been released prior to his departure. I would have been honored to bear the casket of the man of biblical proportion. Probably cry the whole way though...
I posted these slides only so that my family could watch it. My mother put the slides together and my father participated in the funeral service. He knew Desmond for many years and also was part of an advisory council on the movie. I had the pleasure of reserving an entire theater for the people I work with and having my father say a few words about the movie and Desmond after. It was a great time.
i think his funeral was probably how he would have wanted; receiving a "well done" from GOD, "love you always" from his family, "thank you" from his military comrades, "till we meet again" from his sda family and "miss you" from friends in attendance.

Fun Fact: in 2003 I met Doss at a Pathfinder event. He signed my Bible and I still have it to this day. He then passed away in 2006. I was part of the pathfinder group that marched at the funeral. But you can’t see me in the photo. Im there 100%. Didnt think much of it all then being so young, but years later I saw Hacksaw Ridge and it brought me back here. RIP Desmond.
Today is 23.3.18. A hero died 12 years ago today. And I had the honour of watching his story on today of all days. Sometimes hero don’t even know they’re heroes. He brought down 75 men from that battlefield. On his own. May this hero forever rest in peace 🙏❤️

Its actually crazy to know that Mel Gibson took some real things that happened to desmond and didn't include them in the movie because he though it wouldn't be believable to the audiences. Desmond was not just a medic he was a Legend the ones he saved were able to go back home to there family’s thanks to Desmond. he was shot in the arm hurt his leg but that still did not keep him down god gave Desmond a chance to save more lives he said “please, lord. Just help me get one more” Demond was one of the most greatest medics in history he fought a war with out a gun his heroic actions will never be forgotten.

Id say its more likely the soldier's humanity amidst all the carnage, seeing Doss do a heroes work, probably prevented him from shooting. :)

His commanding officer and other troops thought he saved 100. Doss himself thought he "only" saved fifty. They split the difference and called it 75.
