    Judging by this clip alone, it´s easy to say that the city has some of Europe´s most beautiful architecture.

    If you thought u loved the architecture then, you should see Bucharest now 5 years later a lot of the older but historical buildings have been renovated and look absolutely stunning just like they did 100y ago

      The collocation "eastern european" was purely geopolitical. Now Romania is in central Europe, partly in southern. Geopolitical Eastern Europe now is in RF(Russian Federation). There are countries outside geographical Europe but that are culturally European - Georgia. Some parts to the north of The Caucasus Mountains are kind of "north-asiatic"(no urban culture).

I'd love to go to Bucharest, Cluj and work my way up to Ukraine and Belarus. Such a beautiful part of the world and sadly overlooked

    Fun fact: the building group at 00:24 was originally erected not as a hotel, apartment, or some state institution, but as the personal residence of one very rich man. The colonnades on the top also served as a support for radio-emitting antennas. The block on the left (also hosting a Ferrari showroom at ground level) has been built around 1960, presumably to replace an older block that should have been a mirror copy of the body on the right. The original edifice was probably demolished by some event, be it a major earthquake (1907 or 1940) or a WW2 bombing raid. I consider it a major eyesore because it does not match the general architectural style of the area and ruins the symmetry of what would have been a very nice three-building ensemble.

    I really welcome this video because Bucharest is such an interesting city in many ways but it is very overlooked by many as being somewhere to visit.
    In truth, as a whole, Bucharest is not an attractive city, but it does contain many rather fine buildings. In the video the buildings built under the influence of King Carol are shown, but Bucharest also has quite a few twentieth century buildings that are of interest as well. Unfortunately there are quite a number of ugly monstrosities, I include Nicolae Ceaușescu’s “People’s Palace” amongst the ugly buildings, however there are quite a number of very find twentieth century buildings as well.
    I think a few days in Bucharest could be well spent.

    The ship I was serving on made a port visit to Romania back before Caucescu and his wife were put against a wall and shot. It was a dismal place with gaudy, gigantic buildings built for the cult of Caucescu. Are those buildings still there or have they been torn down.

    • @carcotasu081
      @carcotasu081 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you mean the building of the Parliament of Romania? Cause of course it's still there.
      Other than that, if you're talking about Constanta (our port to the Black Sea), I dunno what "gigantic" buildings you found there.

    • @chiconeededthemoney
      @chiconeededthemoney 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi. The ship I was on docked at Constanta. We were allowed shore leave and we walked around the city. I remember since it was a very important visit, what with helping in US and Soviet relations and Glastnost, we had to wear our dress whites all of the time whenever we left the ship. We had a special day when some of the crew, including myself, took a plane trip across the country and made a visit to Bucharest. That's how I visited Bucharest. I remember the evening of our trip, we visited a cultural exhibit and dinner put on by our hosts and some heavy local alcoholic drinks were served and some of the crew did not really expect it to be so strong and there were a lot of very drunk sailors making their way back to the bus to take us to the plane back to Constanta. Some very sick, drunk sailors.

    • @carcotasu081
      @carcotasu081 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Marian Paul Great story, thanks for sharing. I'm actually surprised communist Romania had such visits from US military personnel. I thought back then we went full isolationist commie style.
      I bet they gave you guys some good ol' plum brandy, that's some rough alcohol called palinca.

    • @chiconeededthemoney
      @chiconeededthemoney 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      carcotasu081 We had been slated to visit Russia but because of somethings that were aboard our ship (and I'm sure you can guess what) they didn't think it wise to visit the competition. They sent another ship in our place. We were disappointed. It would have been something to be the first US Navy vessel to ever visit the Soviet Union. While we were in the Med, a Soviet vessel made a port visit to Norfolk. And it was the plum brandy.

    Bucharest has very pretty architecture and looks metropolitian but its way too dirty and has way too many shady people. Taxis scam and most if not all people dont speak English, even young people and business owners.

    • @DarkSignal59
      @DarkSignal59 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +Pewdiepi as a romanian currently living in bucharest i have to agree with most of that. however i think the rugged, less tidy look gives it more personality imo. but that may just be me thinking that since romania is my home and i feel the most at ease here. however i dont agree with the englih speaking part. when i first came to bucharest i was surprised to see that pretty much everything is also translated in english and a lot of people in places where tourists usually go, like restaurants and landmarks, have staff that can speak english. maybe not the most perfect english but definately enough. i've even seen some old people know some basic english, which came as a surprise. also don't use cabs, the subway is the best, safest choice.

      It used to be more dangerous after the 90s but since then many good things happened. Bucharest nowadays is a lot less dangerous than it was. Still, not very safe like Cluj part of Romania, but still pretty safe. Surely safer than Paris or Madrid, especially than Athens. Romania is one of the safest countries in Europe according to the studies.
