  • Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2016 | We'll tour Romania's vibrant capital, Bucharest, with its "Little Paris of the East" architecture and lingering reminders of a brutal communist dictator. Then we'll head into Transylvania, where we'll visit fortified churches, cobbled merchant towns like Sighișoara, and castles made famous by an imported German king and the real-life Dracula. Finally we'll explore Maramureș, where everyday life still feels like an open-air folk museum. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #romania

    I once had Romanian neighbors move into my neighborhood and they happened to be some of the most compassionate people I ever met. They introduced me to new dishes, new linguistics, taught me about their culture and experiences. They were so family oriented as well and every single one of them had respect for their elders and were truly good folks. They ended up moving years forward but I was able to run into one of the older sons named David at a grocery store many years later and had the chance to catch up and everything. Romanian people have a special place in my heart

      I'm born and raised in Romania, immigrated to America 11 years after the Revolution of 1989. I'm always appreciative of both countries that made me who I am. But I can't afford to retire in the USA (esp because my contributions to the retirement started quite late in comparison with Americans), so, I'm investing early in Romania.
      Come visit, you'll love it! And perhaps learn a bit more about your ancestry.

      Bilateral political relations between India and Romania are warm and friendly. The two countries were brought closer together in terms of values and aspirations after the communist regime was overthrown in 1989. It's not long ago, if you think about it, and Romania struggled for a very long time to escape the poverty and isolation caused by the former communist regime. Romania did helped the Indians in need whenever possible, especially those escaping the war in Ukraine. Romania took in all the Indians that asked for help, provided them with accommodation, food and everything else needed, at no cost.

    I hope one day will be able to visit Romania. So far, have not had the chance. Many Romanians visit Bulgarian sea and mountain resorts. Usually, they come with their cars, often these are family visits.
    Good luck with building better lives and better country! Often our countries go parallel, and if one is doing good, the other one does too.

      There was quite some war and brutality going on, there, too, you know. For starters, it was conquered by the Ottomans in the 15th and 16th century, captured by the Habsburg Empire and only gaining independence in the 19th century, at that time without Transsylvania and other regions. War has never been very far in Europe, this is probably the longest period most of Europe has lived in relative peace...

Romania is one of Europe’s most diverse countries. There are more different kinds of environments and wildlife to see in Romania than anywhere else on the continent.
      You can easily learn more by watching other travelling vlogs or even travelling there yourself. Romania is a great destination for tourists, not to mention extremely cheap compared with the other countries in Europe.

The energy of the land is so healing with awesome spring water and such down to earth people. I can only hope Romanians is going to keep it like that without turning it into some hotel or large tourist developments that will kill the ecosystem because Romania is the only country in Europe now with virgin forests and natural beauty. I know that are a lot of Bangladeshi returning or moving back to Romania and I am buying a house in one of those villages but it looks like the price is going up every year. 10 years ago you could buy land and a house for about 5.000 Euros now you can not find anything for under 30.000 I found something in that area which is beautiful and hope that bureaucratic system get better. I tripped to Romania and rent a car with my cousin. We stayed in Bucharest and went a lot of cities such as Brasov, Sighisoara, Sibiu. It is a beautiful country and I loved the nature and the oldness of the country. Espacially the churches. There were small tiny churches around every city, and they were painted magneficantly. I loved the Brasov most, and the Bran Castle, of couse. Greetings from Istanbul, Turkey

    • @ROMANABSOLUT
      @ROMANABSOLUT 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @mkmm60 - I have visited those 2 castles you mentioned and I could say that they are more Western Europe style than our Peleș Castle built by German artisans in the XIX century as mentioned in the documentary movie.

    • @JakobFischer60
      @JakobFischer60 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That is not western style. Castles are fortified buildings from the medival times to protect their inhabitants. Those two castles were both build in the 19th century as a romantic reconstruction of a "real" castle. Burg Eltz is a real german castle.

    • @ROMANABSOLUT
      @ROMANABSOLUT 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      mkmm60 -
      1 - What "romanian castles" first of all ? Bran and Peleş are built by Germans.
      2 - Hollywood inspired from the German castles, notably Neuschwanstein Castle.
      3 - Peleş is a "Hollywood" like castle too as well as Eltz Castle.
      4 - Hunedoara Castle is also inspired from the German style (Gothic) = Western Europe style.
      5 - if they are not "Western Europe style", what style do they are ?
      6 - Eltz Castle looks pretty much as Neuschwanstein Castle.

    • @JakobFischer60
      @JakobFischer60 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Neuschwanstein was build 1870 and had the first telephone in Germany. Hohenzollern castle was build 1850. At that time most knights were long gone. Burg Eltz was build before 1600. This one is medieval. I would call castles romanian, when they are located in romania. Of course they could have been build by germans.

      Medieval Age : 395 - 1453 = old Burg Eltz is a medieval castle, but an Early Modern Age castle (1453 - 1789 (the French Revolution) when the new parts have been added to it 1490-1540.
      395 - the split of the Roman Empire in East and West
      1453 - the Fall of Constantinople on May 29, 1453.
      1870 & 1850 = Late Modern Age (period) = 1789 - 1945.

    One little thing....at 10:30 about Tepes. We don't use the word "infamous" but...famous. Whereas he may have been very tough (sadistic according to some), we see him as a great leader, that defended his country and his culture/religion against the Ottoman Empire bent on imposing Islam. That is why our vision about Tepes`s legacy is mostly positive. We say that he had to be that way to deter the Ottomans, scare them away beyond any thought of returning. Which he did and for which we are.... grateful. Cheers

      @ Jack S Yes Jack I can assure you that it is the view of the majority of the Romanians .
      The Wallachiens of the time had to face and deal alone with the powerful Turkish empire.There were only empty promises of help from others. Dracula's (Vlad the Impeller) brother and further (the Country ' Domnitor' ) were assassinated in a plot set up by the country big Landlords and Turkish Sultan. HE could trust no one from the start. HE wanted only
      the best for his country. At the time and before him, the Europe
      had seen similar cruelty although not at that scale.
      Only in the past 30 years we witnessed the mass killing of innocent people on false pretence or ' false flag' by bombing and ' collateral killings' several countries
      and the majority of us in the West and even less in the East did not go to the street to protest , we are democrats by interest only.
      What is worst still, now more false
      flags are plotted for possible more
      mass killings. Find a difference?
      Ok one difference: killing by hand vs killing by bombs; one by one vs
      mass killings; thousands vs millions. They were in the 16th century we are in 21st century ,
      and educated DEMOCRATS.

    România 🇷🇴 is so beautiful I can’t wait to visit. I’ve never been but my dad was born there in Bucharest and he and his family he had 9 brothers and sisters plus his mom and dad were the first family ever allowed to leave by Nicolae Ceausescu and his communist regime. It was a big deal at the time and people gathered at the airport to see if it were true and it happened because the United States Secretary of State was on a visit in the early 70’s and put pressure on him or something and all 12 of them granted asylum in America first in Chicago and then they made their way out here to California. I’m so blessed. I’ve never been to visit and I’m in my late 20’s now. I want to take my family including my cousins and visit. I still have family out there. I wonder if I would qualify for an EU passport lol anyways just wanted to share with TH-cam. Thanks for this awesome piece Rick.
