9:49 The fountains of Bucharest are amazing, especially at night with the different colored lights!
There are now thousands of videos on YT showing how wonderful Romania is (at least 4 are mine from a visit last month).
So I think vloggers can stop using the words "underrated" and "unexpected." Truth is Romania is a very welcoming country with amazing food, friendly people, easy to get around in (English is widely spoken by younger people), generally cheap prices, scenery that is too beautiful to describe in words, and a rich, complicated history. The word is out.
Of course, the challenge now is to show things that haven't been shown hundreds of times before.

    • @waysoftheworld_
      @waysoftheworld_  ปีที่แล้ว +22

We missed the fountains at night 😭 Got caught up with too much work and didn't have time to visit :( And agreed, Romania is incredible, but I mean... underrated and unexpected are so subjective. What's unexpected for you, may be not unexpected for me... Truth is, we didn't know anything about Romania before going there and actually no one we knew had ever been... Even in social media when we shared we were coming to Romania, their answer was 'why?' and 'what's there?' so for us it was definitely unexpected and I think for a lot of people it still is. Compared to a lot of the very touristy destinations of the world, Romania is still relatively unknown in our opinion. We fell in love for so many reasons and we had no idea that was going to happen...

@@waysoftheworld_ most people after college, get a mortgage that they will pay almost their whole life, they get a job that most likely they hate, and at retirement they realise that all that time it went by and they left a world unexplored, there is a whole world out there waiting to be explored, people need to get out their comfort zone and start exploring!

The Palace of the Parliament is the heaviest building in the world, weighing about 4,098,500,000 kilograms (9.04 billion pounds; 4.10 million tonnes), also being the second largest administrative building in the world.[3] (The Great Pyramid of Giza is about 50% heavier.)

Thanks! The original plans for The Parliament would have made it the largest administrative building in the world. But if I understand correctly they changed the scope to save money. Now the Pentagon in Washington DC is the largest admin building and Bucharest's Parliament is #2 (as you mentioned).

Great video guys. There is a rumor Bucharest is two Albanian words-bukur + eshte which in Albanian means "it's beautiful." Funny enough they call "mici" those meat long balls which we call qebap. But mici is pretty close to mish in Albanian which means meat. I guess these traces of language of Romania today has a link with today's Albania from the pre-Roman times when Illyrian tribes and Dacian tribes mingled but this is up to historians and linguists to solve. Thank you for bringing glimpses of Bucharest so lively. Cheers.

Illyrian tribes were "friends" with thracians, who inhabited large parts of Eastern and SE Europe back in the days (RO today as well). Dacian people, who were part of what it is now Romania, they come from Thracian people. But from what I know, the Ottoman Empire was the one who changed and influenced all that area... food wise, words wise etc. And we both were under Ottoman influence at one point.
"Mici" are actually more or less like "cevapcici", which were influenced by kebap like you also mentioned, which is a dish that traveled over to us/you from the Ottoman Empire. But kebap is super different from mici or cevapcici. And even mici, are super different than cevapcici... but the original influence, lies upon the Ottoman Empire.

    • @SpiritCrusherrrr
      @SpiritCrusherrrr ปีที่แล้ว +3

Regarding the etimology of the name, there are several ones. The oldest is from an ottoman historian who stated that the name comes from an old tribe person from Thracian times; then there's the meaning of "bucurie" which is happiness is Romanian, so a swiss historian said the naming comes from there... then is the similarity with the Albanian word etc. But the Romanian side and the most common version, is that it comes from the name of "Bucur" (which is a common Romanian name), Bucur being a shepherd who traveled from a close area to Bucharest, and established there a church and was the founder of the city, as some writing from the XIX century said.

well the mici are closer to Ćevapi... and not kebap, kebap is mainly made out of lamb, Ćevapi is made with beef, and mici are made with beef and lamb, beef and pork, or pork and lamb.
we do share lots of words with our balkan cousins both due to the thracian/dacian ancestors and also due to the ottoman "visiting" us for a long time...
here are some common words (abure, balaur, baligă, baltă, barză, brad, brâu, bucurie, buză, căpuşă, căpută, cătun, copac, copil, curpăn, cursă, dărâma, daş, fărâmă, gălbează, gard, gărdină, gata, ghimpe, ghioagă, groapă, grumaz, guşă, măgură, mal, mână, mărat, mătură, mazăre, moş, măgure, murg, năpârcă, păstaie, părâu, pururea, rânză, sarbăd, scăpăra, scrum, sculă, sâmbure, spânz, stuped, strungă, şopârlă, şut, ţap, vatră, vătui, viezure, zburda, zgardă, and many more)

We went on a 4 hour walking tour of Bucharest with a professional historian - you can imagine how difficult it is to condense a country's history into a single TH-cam video. Recently while on a KLM flight the announcer said no filming. First time I had heard that. On other subsequent KLM flights there was no such announcement.
I generally use two guidelines: 1) If a place says don't film, then I don't film. 2) If filming is permitted and a place is crowded, I switch to a smaller "street camera" (in my case, a Canon PowerShot) that isn't as intimidating. I used that in Dracula's Castle in Bran, for example.

In the Carpathian region from the Geto - Dacians, while in the Balkans the former Dacian related Thracians and Illyrians, Romanized in 8 centuries of Latinity (before the Greeks took over the Roman empire in 610 AD and abandoned the Balkans to the Slavs) became mostly assimilated in time by the Slavs, Greeks and Albanians. The only former East Romans left in the Balkans are those known as Vlachs, a name used also for the Romanians until 1859 union of Moldova and Wallachia, of same ethnicity, also with the majority of Transylvanians. Obviously, Transylvania was for centuries autonomous, but under the Hungarian kingdom, then the Habsburgs conquered both and still remained autonomous, but still, the only exploited ethnicity for centuries were the Romanians, until WW1, when the majority of Romanians and Germans voted the union of Transylvania with Romania. Indeed, it is a very underrated country.
This "game" has been played by the international media falsely presenting it (precisely because the reality has been truncated), only in negative aspects for a very long time.
(Negative sides that actually exist as in any country of the world).
Who had an interest in Romania not having a correct image in all aspects? (That you are not the first to be surprised by what you found in reality).
And to make a parallel : if the coverage of America had been reduced only to pictures taken in Harlem in the years up to the 80's , what impression would be left in the MINDS of the WORLD POPULATION about this country called America ?
Only the media is the fourth estate , isn't it ? It , plays with people's minds , persuades , positively or negatively , is a very effective propaganda tool of those with interests.
And those who become victims of this persuasion of the media, the absolute master in this field, are those who do not have the curiosity to check the news from the broadcast media and from another source, so easy to access, the virtual one.
Exactly so now: between any corner of the world and any locality in Romania, for a ... virtual visit, the distance is only ... one click and less than ... one second, in time!
    Easier than that?! 🙂

She saw on the tablet, only a Romania with dusty roads, makeshift shacks instead of houses, with people who were said to be thieves, beggars, to be poor and that ... they do prostitution. Only misery and poverty.
No use telling him that I have 18 years of school, including six years of university studies, that I have never stolen a "thread of thread" in my life, and that I work with a legal contract in Paris, just like any European national, she didn't believe me!
Instead, she replied that she only believes what she sees in the pictures in the "reports" of the various TV channels, that she is ... "not naive to believe me".
(Later she happened to need me and I made up for it by solving for her in only 10 minutes what she had been looking for for months). ... ;))
Bad images of Romania had also an ... Italian, (so "very" European), who had no idea ... what Romania's capital is (but didn't even try to find out).
Instead he allowed himself to make "value judgements", (of course with a superior, emphatic attitude), about the subject itself. He was still under the influence of the media).
He was literally "bouche bée" when, at my suggestion, he SEARCHED and found images ON GOOGLE, about Romanian society!
I came to the conclusion that people's scepticism in what they have heard from the audiovisual media should be provoked, so that they would have the curiosity to check and compare information from other sources.
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO! 🤗 💞 , ❣️...❣️
It's extremely important that Romania comes out of the cone of shadow in which obscure interests have unscrupulously put it.
Romanians have always been waiting for the "Americans to come", ever since ... the end of the World War. (It's a reality)!
Unfortunately, the poor people did not know that their fate had been sealed at High, during lunch, on a napkin, when the world was divided and Romania became the satellite of Stalin's USSR.

The Bauhaus style from Germany was chosen because it is much faster and cheaper to build houses vertically than horizontally.

I'd like to add that besides Ceausescu's systematization of the city, a lot of other old buildings from Bucharest especially from Calea Victoriei and a part of the old town were severely damaged by the world war bombings (1944) and the devastating earthquake of 1977. Sadly, following both events from different years, the administrative councils of the communist regime decided against rebuilding them according to the initial plans(as they did in Warsaw for example) but to tear them down and build communist style buildings instead or other modern buildings(after 1989) as the one you see near CEC Palace 4:49 (it used to be a beautiful baroque hotel on its spot, heavily affected in 77).

Actually today the historians are calling Gheorghiu Dej "the fox". He was 11 years in prison before the ww2 where probably he was recruited as agent by the services who knows the fact that the commmunism will "come" in Romania and considered that Romania will need some patriots infiltrated in the Russian structures. Anyway after the years next to the ww2 when the romainian elite was killed in prisons by the jews(all the communist Moscow commissioners was Jews) Russian communists commissioners, Dej finally managed to negotiate the red army retreat and started to develop the country following romanians needs and not the Russian communists plans. So not him was the one who killed many people in prisons but he had to play the puppet role until he had got to the buttons. Actually the ww2 and the communist era was ordered by the western finance leadership in terms of preparing the Eastern European countries for the globalization, as you still can see the east european villages was somehow independent didn't need too much from the cities. So instead of the people depending on to the salaries or bank credits, the cities people was depending on the 90% romanians villages food providers. This was unacceptable for the Jews leadership of the cities and countries and was changed in a very brutal manner especially in Romania where the peasants connection with the land was still very strong. Similar drama was in Ukraine after ww1 in the Stalin period.

Hey, we were not going to argue about this with our Uber driver. It's important to respect that people have different ways of thinking. A LOT of people in the world still view the US as the land of dreams and it depends on each person's background and what a dream actually means to them. We don't disagree that the system in the US doesn't work, as there are many many things that are so broken - I can tell you my perspective (Aimara) as an immigrant. When you're not doing great in your own country and cannot live where you were born, the US does feel like the land of dreams, it's a way out and even though there are way too many things wrong with the US, it is still a place where people go to find a better life and that means different things for everyone. God help you understand people's different backgrounds and stories and not see things as black or white.

Whereas American democracy is hundreds years old, Romanian democracy is just 32 years old! So when you see blunt comments like these bear with them, there's an explanation why! Since the end of WWII until the end of '89 the second ammendment was completely denied to the Romanian citizens. No one could have an opinion without risking prison. That's a fact! So after the comunism ended the reverse happened, for the last 32 years Romanians like to wear their politics under the sleeve basically and be very vocal about it! @@waysoftheworld_ True that in the 2nd half of 80s the guy became a maniac and lost control of the situation. Most would tend to compare Romania under Ceausescu with the types of North Korea, Venezuela, Cuba dictatorships, but the fact is that until early 80s Romanian was a respected international player in many ways. In politics Ceausescu was the only communist leader to oppose the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, then when the Soviets tried to invade Romania prepared the country for war and the Soviets backed off. Then Nixon reached the Chinese for a common ground against the Soviets though Ceausescu. Also in late '60s the Israeli - Palestinian peace was mediated by the Romanians, the only friend of both. Mind blowing also today that at '82 Olympics Romania finished 2nd in the world at gold medals, after the US. In the 70s-80s Romanian engineering and medicine were attended by more foreigners than in all other communist countries together, Soviet Union included. Compared to that is unheard of North Korea or other dictatorships to be tops at anything, except for the obsession to destroy invented enemies, in order to maintain their oppressive regimes. The oppressive regime is the similarity with the last years of Ceausescu, but Romania still had education, a common sense of duty and hard work, until the Soviet backed neo communists hijacked the '89 popular revolt, came to power and in few years sold the entire Romanian industry at scrap. Instead of modernize it, to be competitive. That's the story that should be told.

Do you realize that in '82 Ceausescu's Romania finished 2nd in the world at Gold Medals, in the Olympics, only after the United States and ahead of all the civilized world? Or the education system, had more foreign students in Romania than all other communist countries together. About 600k foreign students studied in Romania only in 70s-80s. Romanian engineering and medicine systems and education copied by many Asian countries that today proud themselves to be some of the best in the world at medicine, like Malaysia. Even in football, you would be surprised that Romanian system was implemented in the Netherlands in early 70s, then in France in early 80s, with great results afterwards, and so on. For the Arab countries and North Africa, Romania was like a Switzerland of technology and a supplier of best agricultural products, even military. The most complex drilling from Iraq, Syria, to Morocco north Africa, was done by Romanian Petroleum Company, and so on.. The big problem was the dictatorship itself and the fact that all those foreign partners got Romanian goods on credit and never paid for them.
