Seems to me Eldraine shares a similar issue with the War of the Spark story in that WotC and Kate Elliot were not quite in sync. It can be possible to think that she was given just enough information to craft a plot while the cards themselves were still in the R&D process/having their art created. I personally feel that Wizards needs to establish a bible with everything that a writer would need to follow in order to have certain elements make sense within the context of the art from the cards.
Totally agree with you about story and gameplay, when you can explain the story of the set through gameplay (like new Gerrard or Gideon Blackblade for example) it becomes memorable
Good to see you back ! As a note, in a medieval system, the loyalty and the politics are usually more centered around a person than to the state. The notion of statehood as we know it will only appear much later. That could explain the loyalty to the king and not to his wife, the throne-helder while he's away. Or, Wizards of the Coast dont like her. Either way :P
The swords were drawn in the book too, because the room with the mirror had undynes that could kill them. Also Linden is not respected at all, because people think she got rid of Kenreth to become a High Queen, even though she is completely steadfast. They never trusted her, because she was incredibly competent but gave up her chance at the knighthood to save the twins. It’s not that she had twins, it was acknowledged that she could take care of them even through the trials, but she knew she would die at Embereth and didn’t have the resurrection magic she needed to complete the trial. She was brave, just not in sanctioned combat. (Hell she saved her husband from a witch). Linden is definitely my favourite.
I don't remember them taking out the swords in the book. They did make note of the merfolk, but I think they were more worried about slipping in a puddle or being drowned when the room filled back up with water.
Whoops! Rowan had her magic out, not her sword. My mistake! Although I do believe my interpretation of Queen Linden still stands. Plus I’m irrationally attached to this set. I love the idea of the Kenereth family. They are just so good to one another. I feel like True Love’s Kiss could’ve been the moment with Linden kissing Kenereth and saving him from the witch, to tie back into the book. The separation of the MTG story from R&D is really hurting.

Oko caused Will and Rowan multiple problems, altered people's memories, elked a LITERAL KING, got away Garroks scary lookin axe weildin ass, and wasted ZERO time planeswalking off Eldraine to almost single handedly ruin standard?!?!? Hes literally accomplished more since his debut then 32 of the 36 planeswalkers in WAR have; and yet has probably never heard the name Nicol Bolas before in his life. (Which is a blessing for Bolas...could you imagine Liliana controlling an army of dreadhorde 3/3 elk? Lol
How Garruk got rid of his curse annoyed me so much. Also, I find ironic that Oko, the trickster planeswalker, is very easy to get very loyal to you on his card.
The "heroes and toys" deck concept reminds me of my Golos commander deck where all the big payoffs are other "lands deck" commanders. Almost all the legends that care about lands are in there.
14:34 you are not alone with this. Story and Lore are important to enjoy the game. It gives flavour to it. I was wondering what had happened to your bit in TCGplayer. That is quite cold in my opinion. I am so glad that I just happened to stumble on your videos because Magic Arcanum and Pretty Deece were the the only reasons I had subscribed to TCGplayer. Good luck and go get ‘em.
It's a shame that so much of the story isn't told in the cards. One of my favorite sets for all time will probably be War of the Spark, and part of that is because how they unveiled the cards, and told the story in them.
Still going through videos, and this revisit to Eldraine is really awesome. A shame the cards and story don’t totally line up, but I do think the cards have a sort of... bare bones structure to them. Admittedly the thing I like about the cards in this set is how you can really tell what each kingdom values from their cards. Like you pointed out with the blue cards and how it shows they like knowledge. The knights of Ardenvale are also extremely fascinating to me and I’d love to see more of them. Your stance on Legendary creatures make sense to me too. I’m gravitating more towards the Godzilla Ikoria versions of the Apex creatures, simply because I know them. Illuna May be a dream weaver but I didn’t get much info on that from the game or book, so I’ll go with the version of the card that had a movie about them recently and pretend they crash landed on Ikoria, haha.
Teferi is a chronomancer; violating causality is his specialty. So, yeah, that could totally be him lurking in the shadows. I do get your point about story and gameplay segregation. It bothers me when any game has big gaps between the two, whether it’s a card game, an RPG, or a video game. Lastly, I wish I had known sooner you split off into your own channel! I was wondering why I hadn’t seen any vids from you in a while. Happy to sub to your new channel.
This set was weird how it didn't overlap very strongly. The primary focus of the set just seemed to be to put a bunch of stuff on cards so you can "build your own fairytale". Maybe they'll revisit eldraine someday, but maybe eldraines role is one of being a one off player inspired (based on known fairy tales and such) set not a lore inspired set. I bet in the next sets they'll go strongly back into lore Great videos! I'm a very casual MTG player and these videos just make me love the game a lot more!
I really would like to see some video about actual ways to read magic lore: books, comics, etc. And also, really great video. Thank you very much for small montage and showing cards.
13:30 "the more you know about a character, the more you identify with them, and the more likely they are to be your favorite." I have a counter example: Sorin Sorin was my favorite character when I first started playing Magic, I saw him as this fabulous vampire that ruled over the plane of Innistrad then I read the story, and I discovered that he's a dick, not even edgy, just a dick for no reason, and I hated him after that.
Great Story! Eldraine is such a flavourful place, I could listen to it's story all day long :D Just a bit sad to hear, that the cards don't reflect the story that much :/
Maybe some noise dampening panels for the walls? Audio seems not up to your previous standards. My son and I love the content though! You two are Legendary Lore Mages
I've been recording in a different environment almost every other week at this point, but once I settle into my next real house, things should be more stable and then I will start to dial in my sound design. Thanks for your patience!
I had a prediction that Garruk would show up on Kaldheim (whenever we get there) as a Jund-colored Barbarian King. I was a little disappointed when I saw that he was going to lose B from his color identity.
Given MaRo said he wanted players to tell their own endings to the story, I'd kind of wish there were multiple ways to undo Kenrith's being turned into an Elk. But I think there's only 1 card that can undo either Oko's ability, or the transformation - Charming Prince.
@@MagicArcanum I can't help but think that if they *really* wanted to build the story around this; Oko'd make an aura token, and they'd give each color an answer to that aura. G, W disenchant; U bounce, B kill then return, and not sure what R would do... bounce aura an opponent controls? Put the answers at (U) and I think it'd be a really neat way to "influence the story." This'd work with TrappedinaTower and Sleep; maybe do a tight cycle of 1C "answer" auras... Curse of Shocking your creature each turn, So Tiny but not mill-dependent, black stab wound variant, Trapped in a Tower, and then... I guess... Kenrith's Transformation? An aura that kept giving the creature's opponent's food would be interesting.
@@reubenfromow4854 its sucks cause I also called secret randevue. when a draw three in white was spoiled me and my buddy were joking like you draw 3 and so does each opponent but we also said things like draw three then put 5 cards back on top of your deck in any order and if you can't you lose the game
When I play mtg, I like having a cool deck with lots of synergy, that's why I like tribal decks. And I like the life just because it's fun and there are lots of characters and worlds. Legendary creatures? Meh, they usually are crappy or op in standard. Thing is, if they are legendary and important, they as a creature are very easy to remove. A planeswalker or an enchantment on the other hand, I think are better to represent important lore stuff since they stay in the battlefield longer. Sagas and the oaths were pretty fun. Buuut, legendary creatures are great in another format, EDH. The fact that you can re cast them makes them more important. If you have a favorite character from the lore and want to play with it, play edh. Standard or modern? Not so much
It is a shame that the people writing the lore and those designing the cards don't communicate more. I think WotC needs to start really integrating the lore and card design teams' input much sooner in the set design process. The impression I get is that there are a couple people high up in the design department who roughly hash out the broad strokes of the story and maybe a handful of key characters. They then pass this bare bones outline to two desperate teams that communicate little, one that works on fleshing out a proper story for the set and the other which designs the cards. This is a recipe for a disaster when it comes to trying to get your story line and the sets flavor to form a cohesive picture.
Cuz I’ve got a lot of Phyrexian stuff, and I wanna make a preator commander deck...but I know almost nothing about them apart from they’re evil and like sharp objects.
You keep mentioning previous eldrain videos but this seems to be the first on the channel. Are there unlisted videos that would be helpful in understanding the lore of each set?
"If you ask the average Magic player to explain the story of Eldraine, just through their experience playing with the cards..." Average Magic player: "Well, there was an elk..."
A lot more detail about the lore of the plane was released: magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/planeswalkers-guide-eldraine-2019-10-31 It's nice to see the lore behind some cards explained better.
Star Wars TCCG!!!!! I played that back in the day and didn't even look at MTG. I kick myself now for not picking up MTG then and waiting almost 25 years later to start playing. I find the set fun to play but like someone else said, it felt rushed. Not as coherent like Ixalan or latest return return to Ravnica.
I'm at brand new to your channel and I just watched this video and I was wondering if you have a series on the overall story of magic like the lore like maybe if you don't you can do a whole series on explaining the whole story so far like from beginning to current I don't even know if that's a possibility cuz I know old magic is very scattered but I would love to be able to you know watch a video or series and learn about you know all the characters and all the planeswalkers and stuff just a question or suggestion
I would like to eventually cover 'everything' but with over 25 years of lore, it's probably too much to put into a single recap video. For now, I'm focused mostly on the more recent stuff, and with four major sets released per year, that's plenty to keep me busy. I suggest you check out "Ex-Plane-ing Planeswalkers" for a good general explanation on who the major characters are and how they move about the connected worlds of Magic's multiverse.
@@MagicArcanum Oh yeah I totally understand Herculean task no doubt. Maybe you could do a series or just a video on like new people coming into magic now and what they should know like a quick history for new people like highlighting the important things that's happened and key players. Since I'm relatively new to magic I want to know everything now lol. But I will definitely check out your recommendation! Thank you for that!
I think your opinions are fair but as a relatively new player the amount of things to learn and figure out about Eldraine was on par with learning about all the previous sets in Magic history, so for me it was more of the same. Looking through older sets after the fact really doesn't put a story together at all, as there are usually over 200 cards and how the hell am I supposed to know which ones are story cards? On top of that there is no official place to see all these cards together (only 3rd party sites) With new sets you get a lot of knowledge about story and whats going on from marketing and other players who learn different pieces of the story. I still get conflicting information about Magic's previous storylines and I maintain that Wizards of the Coast should release a "Story of Magic: The Gathering", an encyclopedia going set by set detailing everything that happened. They could do a volume for the previous set once a new set comes out or stay a certain number of sets behind as to not spoil or reveal anything coming in the future. They can also use this to retcon any inconsistencies from the past. As it stands Magic's story is more jumbled and hard to get into than even comic books these days.
Story cards are designated with a watermark behind the text box, or the words "story spotlight" in the black bar at the bottom of the card with the collector's information. You can see every card in an official gallery from Wizards of the Coast. You don't have to use a third party site if you don't want to. Here's the full gallery for Eldraine: magic.wizards.com/en/products/throne-of-eldraine/cards I agree the older stories were more confusing because much of the information was in printed novels that came with certain card packs, but up until recently, all of the story was available free online in weekly segments. You can still read a huge archive of that here: magic.wizards.com/en/story

10:04 if that's Teferi, then Kibler really did just Murder that guy on Inestrad.
Ok this made me laugh out loud for real
Let's not forget that the trailer for this set was all about gingerbread people for no apparent reason.
Alesha Who Smiles at Death meant a lot to me.
Can't wait for Lair of Behemoths. Hopefully gonna see my green boy Garruk back in action hunting big beasties maybe along with Kiora.
I bet in the next sets they'll go strongly back into lore
Great videos! I'm a very casual MTG player and these videos just make me love the game a lot more!
Would love to see an episode for "who is Ajani"
He's on our list :-)
Did not know you guys split from TCG player. Glad I found you again! Sad grumgully isn't in the book :(
People go to the old Videos from TCGplayer
and comment: there's a new Magic Arcanum channel so everyone gets over here that dont know about this one!
I really would like to see some video about actual ways to read magic lore: books, comics, etc.
And also, really great video. Thank you very much for small montage and showing cards.
That's a great idea and I'll add it my list of topics to cover. Thanks!
Loving the new groove
Once upon a time there was a man named Oko. He threw food and elks at your face until you died. The end.
13:30 "the more you know about a character, the more you identify with them, and the more likely they are to be your favorite."
I have a counter example: Sorin
Sorin was my favorite character when I first started playing Magic, I saw him as this fabulous vampire that ruled over the plane of Innistrad
then I read the story, and I discovered that he's a dick, not even edgy, just a dick for no reason, and I hated him after that.
Omg! I still play SWCCG. Best game. Ever.
Great Story! Eldraine is such a flavourful place, I could listen to it's story all day long :D
Just a bit sad to hear, that the cards don't reflect the story that much :/
Hope you grow your numbers fast!
True Love's Kiss can also undo the enchantment but not Oko's ability, but you're right, it does feel very forced.
Great to see more of your videos! (More eye contact please!)
That gets fixed in my next video and will get even better once I get my prompter working again. Thanks for your patience :-)
Love your vids keep up the content
I wanna believe oko is a MTG Loki and it'll open up a way for a Norse themed realm but I ain't holding my breath
Sooo how does it feel being a prophet?
@@reubenfromow4854 its sucks cause I also called secret randevue. when a draw three in white was spoiled me and my buddy were joking like you draw 3 and so does each opponent but we also said things like draw three then put 5 cards back on top of your deck in any order and if you can't you lose the game
Great work
When I play mtg, I like having a cool deck with lots of synergy, that's why I like tribal decks.
Not so much
Apparently Gadwick has Bone to Ash in his library.
I mean they did make a single double face card for core 2019 w/ Nicol Bolas, the Raveger
Wait why didn't the vantress paladins went to seek help from the magic mirror even though that is litterally their artifact
I assume they did but they didn't have any new secrets to trade to the mirror that would get it to show what happened to the King.
Can we get some lore on the Phyrexians?? Thanks!
Cuz I’ve got a lot of Phyrexian stuff, and I wanna make a preator commander deck...but I know almost nothing about them apart from they’re evil and like sharp objects.
Good stuff, thanks boss.
Too sad we don't see the cookie-lady from the Eldraine Ad in the book OR the cards :/
You keep mentioning previous eldrain videos but this seems to be the first on the channel. Are there unlisted videos that would be helpful in understanding the lore of each set?
I did several videos for the TCGplayer channel while I was working there. Here's the one on Eldraine: th-cam.com/video/fNmsmVZQh5A/w-d-xo.html
Elwyn eventually promoted to become Syr Elenora, a legendary knight?
Still wouldn't explain the unicorn!
"If you ask the average Magic player to explain the story of Eldraine, just through their experience playing with the cards..."
Average Magic player: "Well, there was an elk..."
A lot more detail about the lore of the plane was released: magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/planeswalkers-guide-eldraine-2019-10-31
It's nice to see the lore behind some cards explained better.
This was a delightful surprise, yes!
Was rewatching the video and got me thinking...do you think Teferi and Liden are related? 🤔🤔🤔 Siblings? Cousins?
I think your opinions are fair but as a relatively new player the amount of things to learn and figure out about Eldraine was on par with learning about all the previous sets in Magic history, so for me it was more of the same. Looking through older sets after the fact really doesn't put a story together at all, as there are usually over 200 cards and how the hell am I supposed to know which ones are story cards? On top of that there is no official place to see all these cards together (only 3rd party sites)
With new sets you get a lot of knowledge about story and whats going on from marketing and other players who learn different pieces of the story.
Here's the full gallery for Eldraine: magic.wizards.com/en/products/throne-of-eldraine/cards
I agree the older stories were more confusing because much of the information was in printed novels that came with certain card packs, but up until recently, all of the story was available free online in weekly segments. You can still read a huge archive of that here: magic.wizards.com/en/story
One for the algorithm.
*nudge* i may be mostly useless, but I can like and comment everything to get that algorithm a little more excited about you.
you forgot the decklist...
i'm sad...
:,(
please do a Kamigawa story vid!!!
That one is highly requested so it's on our list, for sure.
Please do New Phyrexia! Koth is dope af
What the cards the are showing the present and spot light cards showing the past
*looks at title*
Elks. Elks *everywhere* .
You're not wrong.
I just realized magic arcanum split off
17:20 he could use bone to ash
embercleave is not a name, bc its what it is: it hits like embers
It is kind of sad that the new Magic Arcanum videos are not reaching even 1000 views right now.
Hopefully old viewers discover the new Magic Arcanum channel.
While the video lacks some polish, I love it. I hope to see this channel continue.
Is there a reason that they had to make their own channel? I honestly just noticed this video was on a new channel after reading your comment. lol
@@PremPnamNam I have no clue. Tcgplayer recently laid off large number of their staffs, so I assume the departure had something to do with that.
Legit didn’t even know that there was a new channel until yesterday
I just found this channel today. I hope others do too
youtube's algorithm is working. I just got directed here!
