  • Unfortunately this railroad is long gone. Tracks were removed and sold to billionaire William Koch who moved the train and tracks to his ranch property in Gunnison, Colorado. The trestles are still there. This railroad started in 1958 and closed shortly after this video was filmed. Track is 15" gauge and length is about 3 miles. It is not too far away from Canon city, Colorado.
Bridge shown from the viewing platform is the Royal gorge bridge. This was filmed in August, 2012.

I remember a trip to Royal Gorge in 2004 that I took with my mother. It was an amazing little railroad and a beautiful tour all round. We stopped along the way to feed popcorn and peanuts to the chipmunks and squirrels. Doesn't look like they did that on this trip. The visitor's center used to make fudge, including several varieties of sugar free fudge. We brought plenty of that back home with us. Mom's been gone for a long time now but this video brought back some precious memories for me! Thanks!

What a beautiful view of the Royal Gorge and suspension bridge. The work involved constructing this railroad was immense ! Hats off to the builders ! I can't believe how many bridges they built over gullies and ravines to get the train to the edge of the Gorge ! This attraction ranks with Niagara Falls in beauty and scope ! Wonderful ! Our lost of a national treasure ! Sad.

It's a shame that this fantastic miniature railroad / railway no longer exists, what a great ride with great views, trestle bridges and a decent run. This must have been one of the most spectacular 15 inch gauge railways in the world.

I remember the Royal Gorge in Colorado. We were kids when my parents drove our family to Denver Colorado. It was beautiful there and while here it was 100° it was only 75° there. There were snow caps on some of the mountains. We had fun that summer many years ago but I still remember!!!

I maintained and ran a miniature gague railroad built by my step father in the 1950's and 60's. It was located just west of Albany, NY. It stopped operating when alcohol destroyed him and the family. If any of you remember The Carolyn Road or know what happened to it please contact me.
As I operated a miniature RR I have good idea of the effort needed to run this train. Just inspecting, let alone building, all the trestles, and the trackwork is tremendous.
I read that this railroad has been sold and moved. I hope the new owners take the time and effort to keep this example of a once very popular amusement ride alive and well. I is now on my to visit list.

The view of the parking lot at the beginning of the video showed there were a lot of weeds growing through the asphalt, which would indicate the miniature railway wasn't very busy. Given that there is a full-size excursion train at Royal Gorge, it's not surprising this one was sold. The only surprising thing is that Mr. William Koch didn't buy the whole thing - land and all - for himself. Hard to find views like this.

It's a shame because it looks like there is no way to get to that vantage point without walking. Probably not a good idea across those bridges.
I guess the place was not making enough money. The owner probably sold the train and tracks because they had too. Most private attractions have a life cycle.. I do hate to see something like a railroad taken up... you can't easily build a new one without expense. Traveling open air at a slow speed was a great way to see the scenery.

It is 15" gauge and unfortunately it is closed with the rails ripped up. This was located near the Royal Gorge Bridge in Canon City, Colorado.

Traveling Tom Thank you Tom for the information. I wish I could’ve been there when it was up for sale before they ripped up the rails and removed it I would love to preserved it for the Public to enjoy. I wonder if the new owner has opened it up to the public and where. Again thank you for the info Tom I greatly appreciate it. Mr. Bill CNW. From the suburbs of Chicago

@@MrBillCNW I recently heard that the locomotive and cars were recently sold to another miniature railway near Fort Collins, Colorado. It's a private railway but I am working on getting a tour. What happened to this railway is really a shame. It used to do really good business. Someone really should put another railway in there.
