New plastic carburetor - easy cleaning parts teardown Briggs & Stratton Ethanol clogs

  • A simple look at a simple Briggs & Stratton carburetor from a 2016 Murray Lawn Mower. How to pop the white plastic valve ports out to clean. This is very easy and quick. This is going to be the case for most mowers left with ethonal over the winter months without use. Use non-ethanol fuel if you intend to leave the mower more than a month. Or test out some additives if you like. Test it. Place a mason jar of ethanol e10 or e15 on a shelf for a month. Did it separate?
The mower started first pull like it should.
    You got this.

This is the best video on servicing a plastic carburetor off a mower! Going the extra mile and taking the jet assembly apart is a 100% "MUST DO"! to properly service the plastic carburetors. Thanks Dude! Great video 😉😉😉

Worked perfect. A couple of notes. Under the floats, is a little round dome shaped piece of aluminum. A cover over a port. It had fallen out. Put it in place, and lightly tapped it with a socket slightly smaller. Worked perfect. Also noticed hinge pin for floats kept falling out. Superglued one end. Worked perfect. Runs like a champ now. Thanks a million. Oh, also, I used welding tip cleaners to clean ports in nylon piece. Lots of different sizes to choose from.

this is the best video i came across about these carburetors. i had taken mine apart and cleaned it twice, but the slow explanation of the pieces you lift with the screwdriver were key. worked first pull after that. thanks so much

Good video! Last year I drained the sta-bil and put fresh gas in the tank. I didn't use it again for a month and it wouldn't start. I didn't think gas would degrade that fast and clog up the carburetor, but it did. I didn't use it the this summer until yesterday 9-22-20. With the help of my neighbor Jim, your video and some other videos I was able to get it running. Thanks. Also thanks for getting to the point and not wasting my time.

You're a lifesaver. I took it apart once but did not know about the extra piece on the jet assembly. After I took that off and cleaned it and put it all back together it started first try. Thank You! My original problem was started off of primer but then would die. And if you can use clear gas instead of ethanol you will stay golden.

I did this today as my mower was starting, running a few seconds and stalling. Followed along with this video, pausing often and I just want to say that this worked beautifully! I am no mechanic and I was a bit intimidated about even trying this because I am so not mechanical. However, I got it done and the mower runs beautiful. Thank you! From now on I am draining the gas out over winter. Lesson learned.

  • @markstoltz226

Thanks for the demonstration! I didn't know that the main jet disassembled came out until you showed me. I "rebuilt" (sprayed carburetor cleaner in the jets until I saw a full stream) the carb but I failed to check the gas tank and it stopped right back up after about 20 minutes of mowing. This time I'll check the tank for anything foreign first, then completely remove the main jet and clean it thoroughly. Thanks Again!

Glad I found this video. Didn't realize the white plastic part came out in the middle.
Best thing to prevent carb problens is to put a filter and a shutoff on the fuel line between the tank and the carb. Close the valve before you finish mowing and run it out of fuel. At the end of the season run the tank completely out of fuel. Then it can't sit in the carb n gum up the tiny passages.

Hello A-Plus. First of all thanks for making the video. I’m no novice to cleaning carbs on small engines, Tchumseh, Briggs and Honda are the three that I’ve cleaned and fixed before but I’ve never tackled one of these all plastic jobs before. At the end of last season I bought four lawnmowers from a man who had sold his rental properties and just wanted to unload these mowers. Point being I do not know any history of these mowers. Today I finally got around to picking one out and making it run. I cleaned out the orfices of the carb as you did minus removing that small white plastic piece of the three prongs. I did remove the white cartridge and blew through it with carb cleaner. Everything seemed ok.
The problem is that the engine refuses to reach the proper RPM. I think it’s running too rich. I can see droplets of gas being spewed out of the carb’s intake hole. It’s running at about 1/3 or even 1/4 speed. It starts on the first pull but will not speed up until...until its running out of gas. When it runs out of gs it speeds up for the last 2-3 seconds and runs almost normally.
    Any thoughts?

Very good video. I have just done one of these carbs but didn't touch the white plastic bits as I didn't realize their significance. My work was not very successful - engine still surges. Will have another go soon. Was not very clear on 'what gets in the way' when the white plastic parts are reassembled into the carb but I expect it will become clearer at the time. This is an easy carb to remove from the engine as it just pulls off so the overall job is quite quick to do. Thanks for the info.

Thank you! My mower has done this the past two years, and it is good to go now after following these steps. Amazing that those small spaces getting backed up can cause such a problem. I may try non-ethanol for my last couple of yard trims this year and see if that helps next year.

  • @7armedoctopus69

I didn’t have good access to ethanol-free gas last year but I ran starzyme in the last tank of gas and ran it completely dry before storing for the winter and I STILL have to do this. Pretty fussy little carb. Found a source for some scourge-free gas (aka ethanol-free) so hopefully this is the last year I’ll have to do this. Thanks for the great vid!

this is the best video covering this topic. the hole in the bottom sideways jet is incredibly tight and small. i never knew such a small place existed. ours was completely clogged, and at first i couldn't even see if it actually passed through or was a dead end hole. after taking this apart and putting back together a few times, i am now wondering why our mower's fuel system doesn't even have a fuel filter. i at least didn't notice one. seems another clog is inevitable. using a single strand of the small braided wire is a good trick. i twisted a few together after getting the first one through, and then kinda used it as a very small pipe cleaner. started on the first pull. i guess we are just gonna try to keep our gas, and gas can very clean. our mower actually is a 2015 model that someone bought new, used a couple of times, and then put into storage, and let set at least a couple of years, maybe a few. our clog may have been extra stubborn due to that. i would also recommend doing this procedure somewhere with very good lighting to see the small hole.

gr8 vid , on those I don't take that small part off the white jet, I did that once, and when I tried to put it back I ended up breaking it. and had to buy a new one. I figure I have a better chance of not cleaning that part as well as I could and it still work then the chances of breaking it.

Just serviced my 575EX carb (virtually the same, but with a choke rather than primer bulb), would recommend using brake cleaner rather than carb cleaner, as the latter can damage the plastic (hence why people complain about these carbs "not lasting" when they're blasting a solvent into them!!), brake cleaner doesn't have the same effect on plastic so is much safer to use for longevity... :)

On top of the carb there is a white fitting. When I took the mower apart, I found this went "no-where". That makes no sense. It looks like it is supposed to have a vacuum tube on it or something. Any ideas where this went. I have a mower that won't start unless I force fuel into the carb and then only for a few seconds. The motor is obviously starving for fuel.

th-cam.com/video/29jdU3ijuV8/w-d-xo.html This is one of several videos I found that show there really is nothing attached to the white tube from out of the box. Most of them recommend capping the white tube. In one of the comments to one of these videos they said that is to let air into the priming bulb for people who do not remove their finger from the vent hole in the prime bulb itself between pumps. I hope this helps! Stay safe.

It does make a difference on how the float bowl cover goes on....if you take the drain plug off on the bowl cover you will see it goes on only one proper way...and the drain plug is not threaded..it's a turn lock on off allen head screw that is sealed with a O ring...hard to take off without taking the bowl off and then easily breakable ears that will break when if you put back on....broke the locking tabs on the plug and have to buy the whole bowl...the whole carburetor is plastic so anything you remove on it can break...especially if it is tightly connected.....the carburetor is also attached to the manifold by a rubber grommet that you just push in to secure...no bolts on the carb to attach to the manifold..the carburetor is sandwiched between the air cleaner bracket and engine screwed onto the motor and that's how it is secured ..

How do you replace the needle valve seat? Mine leaks when shut off soaking the filter. Seems silly not to replace the needle and seat in pairs. I followed the rest of the vid and she runs like a champ! Thanks!

A Steve's Small Engine Saloon video says you have to drill out the jet or it will just quickly clog again. Supposedly they made it too small (much smaller than other carbs) because of the EPA. What do you think?

just a small note when you remove the center plastic jets they can let the venturi fall apart ,the jet actually seats in the cone of the venturi , and I recently had one move and had the devils own job getting it reseated , it blocked the passage and the choke wouldn`t open there fore the throttle would not close and the engine ran at full speed all the time .

Screws are generally turned into an object, like a piece of wood, so the head needs to be bigger than the surface. ... The shafts of bolts are not tapered, whereas many screws are tapered. The main difference between a bolt and a screw is that a typical screw can work on its own and a bolt requires a nut to secure it

With the float removed we see a shiny metal disk pressed into the plastic carburetor body. The disk in my carb had fallen out. What purpose does it serve? May I leave it out? If it must be installed how is that done so it won't fall out again?

Cleaned mine out twice today, runs but surges. Going to get some more carb cleaner & try again. The ethanol fuel is the biggest problem with small engines today 😤😕😦

Took mine apart with your video and sure enough there was a shellac build up in one area of those 3 plastic pipes. My ultrasonic would not clean it out. Thanks...

What is the little white fitting next to gas line from tank is there a gas line to prime the carburetor ? Can’t seem to prime the carburetor bulb doesn’t have any hole that I can see

just saw your vidio has the exact carb, no choke spring like others just a white cap on top, so the white piece buy gas connection looks like a tube must slide on...mine does not have a tube , is this what closes the carb to choke??

Any idea why my lawn mower will only run for about 15 seconds and then sputter and shut off I just got through cleaning the carburetor like you did in the video and it's still doing the exact same thing. it's got a brand new air filter nothing seems to be clogged either. Thanks in advance
