Much respect. I own a small engine repair shop in South Carolina. What we do is starting to be a dying trade. Lot of machines are throw aways now a days. The only way I make money is by fixing stuff and not replacing parts. And the worst thing is a customer bringing something back. You take pride in what you do. That itself is a dying art. I’ve seen a ton of these Briggs coming through the shop. I tried drilling out the jet with an old micro drill bit set. Apparently I drilled it too big and it ran too rich. But, I agree, the jets in these things are way too small. Experience is a bunch of compounded mistakes.

    Good vid,
There are 2 different main jet models ( that cartridge part has normal one and high altitude one).
    Parts #592684 (high altitude)
    #592792 (standard)
I don’t know what is different about them but perhaps the main jet is a different size

  • @mcsmama

[Original main jet opening may be too small from the manufacturer & may need to be increased in ID with a tiny screw bit to allow better fuel flow after cleaning everything with carb cleaner & blowing dry with compressed air.]
Hi Steve, I just found you for the first time today, have watched four of your videos, & am loving the way you explain things for those of us who have little to no experience with small engines... THANK YOU! I just get worried that there are sometimes not enough closeups of how things look before taking them apart to help me get them back together properly & get all the screws & parts back in the right places & positions! Hopefully, the more vids I watch, the less foreign everything will appear when I get started.
Also, thank you SO MUCH for not having any background music in your videos... concentrating on the details requires all my attention & vids that add music are torture for people with attentional struggles. God bless!

Same crap they do with the 49cc scooter engines, they come jetted way too lean and the carbs are sealed, you have to drill out the screws to open them or just buy an aftermarket carb that is NOT sealed, in order to change jet sizes. They run too lean and people have serious problems up to and including melting a hole in the piston due to that. Screw this plastic carb crap, why not figure out a retrofit with a metal carb? has to be one that would fit, that plastic crap isnt going to last very many cleanings having to PRY the bowl and cartridge with a screw driver to get them out

  • @jamesrochester787
    @jamesrochester787 5 ปีที่แล้ว +48

Couple of points. When removing white cartridge, be very careful if you use small flat blade screwdriver that you insert it deep enough between side of white cartridge and black sidewall so you do not damage the thin O ring at the top of the white cartridge. When reinstalling this cartridge, be aware there is a plastic sleeve that sits in the body of the carburetor between the butterfly valves. It has a hole in the side wall of the sleeve. You cannot see this hole unless you remove the sleeve. This hole in the sleeve lines up with a hole in the body of the carburetor. The central jet of the white cartridge must pass through both of these holes to seat properly. Sleeve can shift while you are working on carb making it impossible to reinstall white cartridge. Cartridge should install with little pressure to seat it properly. If you find it very difficult to reinstall, sleeve probably moved and holes not aligned. To fix this, need to gently remove the larger butterfly valve (throttle) metal piece. It fits into a slot in the small plastic pin the holds it in place. GENTLY spread the slot apart and GENTLY remove this metal piece. You can then pull the pin out giving you access the the White/Grey sleeve. Can use your small finger to reach into space to sleeve. Use small probe and insert it through the hole where the main central jet on the plastic cartridge seats in the carburetor while using your small finger on the sleeve to align the holes. Once aligned, remove your probe but keep your small finger on the sleeve so the holes stay aligned and reinsert the plastic cartridge. Should easily seat in place. Reinstall throttle pin and gently insert the metal piece into the slot in the throttle pin, making sure you have it oriented properly. What should have been a 20 to 30 minute job today took almost 2 hours because of these issues (torn O ring) and trying to figure it out ( as well as breaking that plastic throttle pin and having to glue and clamp it and waiting for it to cure before being able to reinstall it)

It`s a nice tutorial! We have the identical issue with such plactic carb. I have cleaned it thoroughly, however, no difference in outcome. Too difficult to start the engine and... it`s possible one time only. If stop it and try to pull again- no response... The spark is normal, compression is acceptable, but no start. I`ll try to purchase this micro drill set, but, I have a doubt that this is only a problem. Do you know whether I can replace this plastic "masterpiece" with a traditional metal analog, please? How to find a compatible carburetor? Thank you

    Thanks so much Steve,
My neighbor asked me last week if I knew anything about Briggs & Stratton engines. I told him I've had pretty good luck keeping the two Quantum Briggs motors going on the two mowers I have. My mowers are 20, and 25 years old, and they both came stock with the old 3.75 horse B&S engines. The older of the two was lent to another neighbor who was kind enough to bring it back, not only with a bent blade, but a bent crankshaft and of course the lower seal destroyed, rendering it unable to hold oil. :(
Another neighbor of mine was a scrapper, so I asked him if he had any old Briggs motors around that might have a crank shaft for me. He said he had one, but it was a 6HP quantum that didn't run. I asked what he wanted for it, and he said since it was scrap, just my old motor if I could get this one running.
The 6HP quantum had practically no compression, so I went to pull the head off, only to find that all 6 bolts were loose as a goose. I bought a new gasket, put it back together and it's been running solid for 10 years.
The second, the 20 year old mower I bought new to keep at a second property. It had the same 3.75HP motor as my original, but came with a plastic carburetor, which was tank mounted, and looked like my moriginal, however, it never ran right from day one. It was subject to constant stalling, even when my grass was never an inch overdue for cutting. My scrapper neighbor had another Quantum 6HP laying on the ground beneath the bed of his truck, so I asked him what he wanted. Again, he said it didn't run, so he was fine with an exchange.
That motor had a clogged jet, which is such an easy fix, since the jet is in the bowl retaining nut. That motor has been running solid for 5 years now.
I told my neighbor, if it's a Quantum on his mower that I could probably fix it, so he brought it over yesterday.
It wasn't a quantum. It was a brand new Craftsman that had a new style 6.75HP motor with the same plastic carburetor who went through in your video. He bought the mower new at the beginning of the season and was only able to use it to cut his lawn 3 times before it quit running. It would start right up with a shot of carb cleaner, then quit. I was hoping it was just a stuck float, however the bowl was full with clean fuel when I opened it up.
The main jet was visible, and I couldn't see debris in it, so I figured it was time to search TH-cam...
I couldn't see how the jet assembly was retained in the carburetor until I stumbled on to your video. Thanks. :)
I popped it out, and it still looked clean, however, I couldn't see light through it while shining a bright light against the nylon on the revers side, nor could I blow air through it. I worked a sewing needle around in the hole for a bit, then I could see light shined against the nylon through the hole. I was able to blow air through, then get a shot of carb cleaner to pass through from the other brass inlet with the output port blocked.
I put his mower back together, and of course it started on the first pull and sounded like a brand new mower. Hmm... maybe it runs like a brand new mower because IT IS A BRAND NEW MOWER!!!
I don't get it Steve. Why are plastic carburetors such a problem?
I have a reasonable understanding of metallurgy, and I could see if it were an issue of dissimilar metals, I.E. if the jet were alluminum, pressed into a steel body. But that is not the case. Why should the jets on these plastic carburetors be so easily blocked?
Thanks again for the great video. Like I said, I couldn't tell for certain how the jet assembly was held in the bottom of the carburetor until you showed me.
    Steve
P.S. Are you really the man of Stihl? :)

Thanks for the great video, I'm going to try the .020" drill bit trick. Just a note, GumOut Carburetor cleaner will dissolve some manufactures O-Rings on the White metering insert and also some of the plastic of the carburetor bodies. So make sure you pull the O-rings off whatever part you're cleaning. Do it quickly and immediately dry the parts with some canned or compressed air. Oddly at the end of the season it's best to disassemble the Carburetor and and dry all the gas out of it with air before you reassemble it and put it up for the winter. Oh and keep a spare carburetor on hand as they are junk, but inexpensive and will work for a season or two, but hopefully your trick will solve this problem for good on these Carburetors. Super video bud! Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

I think the fuel itself is clogging the jet if it sits for more than a couple of weeks.

I installed a shutoff in the fuel line and turn it off and run the engine until it runs out of gas when I'm done mowing. It actually runs for four or five minutes on what's in the bowl. Between that and using stabilized non-ethanol fuel I don't expect problems in the future, but if I do, I now know how to fix it. Thanks, Steve, very clear tutorial!

These carbs are a pain. Fortunately if you screw one up while trying to fix it they are available new for under $20. The ethanol we have to have in the gas here wreaks havoc on them. One more thing - safety glasses when spraying carb cleaner! That stuff at best stings and is not good for your eyes. It doesn't task good in your beer either...And gloves too. My guess is that the jets are so small to meet emissions/use less fuel.

I sold a mower with that type of engine a little while back and not long after ,the customer came in shop with the engine not running right or even starting, . It was fine dirt clogging the jets, although the tank appeared relatively clean, I cleaned fuel system, strained the fuel, starts and run fine, out it went. This unit came back to the shop for same reason 3 times in the span of a season . I'm scratching my head.....Finally discovered that the little strainer inside the tank was missing, allowing fine particles of dirt to enter carb. After replacing the tank, and mower has been running fine since.

Great vido, I told my wife the old metal carb works great, so some engineers had to change it, and now the hole is so small it plugs very easily, on our mower the very first tank plugged with less than 1/2 tank ran, and I filled it direct from gas station pump,so no contamination from home fuel jug, and about 1 season I am back inside the carb again plugged and not running, will definitely be getting that small bit set, and drillling it out, I have had old Briggs motors run for years problem free, like 13 years and never draining tank, used only ethanol fuel in it , but it was 18 or 20 hp i don’t remember on a rider mower, if I remember right it says industrial grade or something to that effect, and I don’t baby it when I used on the big lawn, took3 hours running steady to mow, so obviously bigger jet hole in it vs 146 cc little mower for little yard

Steve, I have a 7.25 B&S with the plastic carb that surges. I installed a new carb. It still surges. Do you think if I open the main jet it would fix the surge issue? It does smooth out if I remove the filter and block off the air intake in essence richening up the fuel mixture.

  • @notajp
    @notajp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I’m thinking that the reason the jet is so small is due to emissions. The OEM’s are trying to run these engines as lean as they can get away with. That’s why we see so many surging problems in these newer engines. And with no adjustments available, opening up jets is the only weapon you have available. BTW, I hate these newer OHV Briggs push mower engines. Not just because of these carbs, but because of the total lack of repair info available. Seems like Briggs doesn’t want them repaired. I still have not found valve clearance specs for them anywhere.

Great video & explanation of the carburetor jet issue & its repair!
I assume Briggs & Stratton intended for the carburetor jet size to be as small as for the jet shown in the video, because carburetors are very carefully designed, & precisely made things. Even so, design & manufacturing errors are possible, & maybe an error (jet size too small) was made by Briggs & Stratton regarding the carburetor jet size (for these plastic carburetors).
Regardless, the engine seemed to run ok after Steve cleaned the carburetor the first time (before he enlarged the jet size) until the jet clogged.
I wonder if installing an in line fuel filter would have solved the carburetor jet issue, instead of enlarging the jet size?

Hey Steve, You're my go-to guy for lawn mowers and doing a great job, keep it up. I'm a little off-topic here, but it seems as good a place as any to ask a question. I live in FL and have a LOT of sand and dust problems that quickly clog up an air filter on the mowers. Right now, I have the standard 6.5hp self propelled mower with a B&S engine (uses the rectangular filter, probably not the latest) and it does the best as far as filter changes go. Then I have a Toro Recycler with the small oblong filter that is a pain. Don't laugh, but I have thought many times about mounting a larger filter assy somewhere and running a hose to the carb. Is there anything out there that already fits these engines made for a heavy dusty environment? Also, I have spare carbs for both engines and the flange side where the air filter housing attaches has the same bore and bolt spacing. Do you know of a simple plastic or aluminum flange that would bolt up and allow a round hose to connect to the intake? I've looked a few times and come up empty. I've found larger ones, but nothing that size. If anyone might know, you would. Thanks for any help.

I cleaned my carb 3 times, the gas tank and fuel lines twice, new plug and air filter too! Could not get it to stay running. I mowed my entire lawn by spraying starter fluid at the intake the whole time! I never knew that little white jet housing could come out. Sure enough that “secondary” outlet was clogged. I also have a Briggs and Scrap 'em with a plastic carburetor that "hunted and surged" from the first day I bought it new. I removed the carburetor and blew out all the orifices with carb cleaner and now it'll start and die. Once I get it started, I have to continuously pump the primer button until the engine warms up enough to roughly run on it's own. The next tool I'm going to use on mine is a BFH. Update: reamed out the main jet with a 0.020 drill bit. The mower now starts on the first or second pull and the "hunting and surging" is gone.

    Hello, great video.
I've been doing small engine repair for about 5 years now, for a little extra cash and therapeutic reasons (some thing about fixing this little engines).
95% of the time I can get them working just fine by cleaning the carb just as you described, but on a rare occasion after fully cleaning the carb it will still not work properly.
I've discovered that the ones that won't work have something in common, you've explained that on some the hole at the bottom does not blow out the front and on some it does.
Coincidentally in my case the ones that just refuse to work right, do not have this holes connected, my thought was that it's obstructed but I'm not so sure anymore.
It's driven me crazy trying to find out what actually goes bad with these carbs when they refuse to work right (engine turns on but sputter from rich mixture), I've ordered re pop new ones when this happens, taken them apart a lo and behold the holes mentioned are connected.
I disected one to see the obstruction but it seemed that it was built that way, so it got me wondering what I'm missing.
They are anywhere from $9-$30 online so its not worth spending too much time on the issue, but it bugs me to have 10 of these laying around that just won't work after a thorough cleaning.
I've fixed hundreds of lawn mowers, pressure washers, edgers and anything using this Briggs engine with the plastic carb.
You got any idea what happens with this plastic carbs when a cleaning won't get them working right?
By the way, it was this video that got me through the first time around about five years back.
    Thanks

Thank you Steve! I've got a Troy-Bilt with a Briggs engine and the plastic carburetor. For a while I got by by removing the carburetor and merely sloshing it around in a can of gasoline. Then the frequency and character of the problems increased. Most recently I got the oscillating engine speed. That's a nightmare. I ordered a micro drill set from Amazon because I wanted a next day solution. I also order the set with the HSS drills. That left me with a smallest drill size of .6 mm but I decided to go with that because I didn't want to fool around with stainless steel drills. I followed all of your instructions after very carefully enlarging the main jet to .6 mm. It started on the first pull and ran smoothly. I could have never imagined such a simple solution... but it worked! Thanks again.

Thank you!!! I watched a dozen other videos and disassembled and cleaned this carb. about 4 times. Watched your video and drilled out the jet. It started on the first crank.

Thank you Steve, used your idea and the mower works now. Thank you so much. I almost got a new mower but not now.

the quality, durability of lawn equipment gets worse every year while the price, even for the cheaper models, is steadily rising. This whole process, the not taking care of things, not bothering to fix it, the throwaway mentality is a clear indicator that the US dollar doesn't hold much value or worth when making purchases and It all starts with the mindset that nothing is worth fixing or taking care of. As long as it looks all pretty and shiny on the outside!

i brought a briggs powered husqvarna mower back in apr 2017. i was used daily for 4 years and it NEVER had any form of fuel problem. its only today (april 2023) that the carb has suffered a blockage. a new genuine cartridge jet is on order. they are less than £10

This was awesome! I was able to fix my pressure washer based on this video. I do question Steve's choice in beer but that's another subject. Thanks!
