    I just had to give an update before I cut the grass :). After watching both of the videos I was able to remove the carb, clean the orifices in the little white piece as you described and got it all back together, now is running perfectly!! Thank you so my friend. If you look at the time stamp, I did the repair in less than 15 minutes. I spent all morning trying to figure this thing out. Should have watched your video first. LOL Thanks again!!

    Thanks for the 2 carburetor disassembly video. I've just been gifted one of these mowers after the previous owner replaced the carb with one purchased from Amazon. Will run poorly on starting fluid. I'm taking about the new carb tomorrow 😎

      Replacing the original carb is almost never a good idea. The Amazon and eBay replacements are junk, unless they are OEM carbs.
      Good luck with your repair and remember that sometimes spark issues can masquerade as fuel issues.

    Thanks for the clear detailed video. I just put my lawnmower back together after following this tutorial and it’s running again!
    When I opened it up, the pin that holds in the floater just fell right out so I think it had worked itself loose but while I had it open I cleaned everything anyway so I hope it stays running because that pin seems very loose that holds the white floater to the rest of the unit and I can imagine it easily vibrating back out.

    This tutorial was awesome. I was able to take my engine apart and trouble shoot the issue. It took me two times but I elected to not clean out the fuel manifold inside of the carburetor. In the second attempt a little stick got pulled out of the injection chamber. Got the carburetor put on better on the second try than the first. Started first pull just like on the video and ran like a champ. I was repairing my neighbors mower that could no longer afford lawn care. Because of this video she not only saved the $125 of repair cost from the shop but now saves $80 a month because she can mow her own lawn. Truthfully I will probably go over and help! haha Thanks so much for the wonderful video. I hope you have made money and able to move into a real shop. Keep the videos coming!

    The videos were very helpful, but I'm still having issues with my mower bogging down and out after about 30 minutes of use. I thought for sure cleaning the carb would work. I then shined a flashlight down my empty gas tank to see if the fuel filter needed cleaning. There was some broken up leaf matter on the mesh, so I washed it out, let it dry, and refilled. Same problem. I replaced the spark plug, air filter, changed the oil, and finally the gas cap. No change. At this point I'm thinking I got some bad or stale gas. Anyway, without your videos I wouldn't have been able to clean the carb and remove the gas tank to clean the fuel filer, so thank you so much for that.

    • @jcx2bby
      @jcx2bby  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's weird. If it is running for 30 minutes, it seems like the carb itself isn't the problem. That almost seems to me to be an overheating issue or a vapor-lock issue with the fuel. I used to have a weed-mower that would overheat if you were using it hard and shutdown. Didn't hurt anything, just shut off til it cooled.
      I'm glad the videos helped you with the reassembly and if you ever figure out what fixes your mower, please post it here. Thanks!

      @@jcx2bby I accidentally put the old gas cap on thinking it was the new one. It's leaf-mulching season for me here in New England, and after two hours of mulching, no stalling. It's been five years with this mower for me and I just don't remember the gas cap fitting so loosely as the new one did. (Completely positive it's for a 550ex). So loose that the vibration of the engine caused it to come off. Anyway, that must've been my vapor-lock issue. I did add new fuel since what I had was about 4 months old.

  • @3qdx

    Thanks so much for doing the video. It wasn't my problem as to why it wouldn't start but the upside is that I ended up with a nice clean carb after completing all the steps you outlined. The problem was a simple one since the mower had been running and suddenly quit. I was cutting around some cedars and a branch must have caught the boot of the spark plug and yanked it just slightly which broke the connection. But I am happy with my clean functional carb as well. Great video as all my parts were identical to yours so, very helpful...good job!

    I couldn't get any start using starting fluid as you suggest. Spark plug came out quite gunked with black stuff. Replaced spark plug. Still no start. May be a little oily or wet in spark plug hole. Which from what I've read is a different kettle of fish than cleaning the carb.

    • @jcx2bby
      @jcx2bby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the new plug did you try the starting fluid again? Possible you had 2 issues, the plug and carb.
      If you have oil on your plug that 'could' indicate problems with your piston rings which is a different issue as you stated. But sometimes these motors get waaaayyyy overfilled on oil and that fouls up the plugs too. Make sure you haven't been running too much oil. Good luck

    Hi Mr jcx2bby. I have the same B&S 550ex, The machine was stored and has never been used since the pandemic started. It doesn't start. After I disassembled and cleaned the carburetor and put a new air filter, and 4T oil, the machine started but in 2 seconds stopped. I disassembled again and clean the carburetor with a needle using such electronic's magnifier glasses to help and see more accurately. Now the machine starts perfectly OVER THE SIDEWALK and never stops. The Idle sounds stable, BUT.... when I try to use it on the grass, at the moment it has to make some " little effort " to cut the grass, it suddenly stops. I think it still has some problem of the amount of fuel to the mixture...is not enough. I'm right? Maybe I should buy a new carburetor? Best regards, Martin.

I write this prior to double checking the throttle springs and choke linkage. But any ideas why it would run slow?

      a common issue with these motors is the valve cover gets dented in causing the valves to stick partially open making the engine run weak or not at all. if valve cover is dented in remove hammer dent out. i use rtv silicone as a sealant. wipe on each surface very thin allow to dry completely then reassemble

      Interesting info. I have not run into this problem before but question; there is not valve cover on these types of engines as i know it to be. The cylinder head covers the valves which are in the block. Can you explain this a bit more?

    • @jcx2bby
      @jcx2bby  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you ever figure this out? One guess is that if the motor isn't original to the mower, it might not be setup for a no-load configuration. In other words, on engines that are installed on push mowers, the carb and springs are adjusted to run optimally ONLY when there is a blade installed on the end of the crank. The blade adds centrifugal weight which helps the motor run faster. If you take the blade off, the engine runs very slow, or not at all because the carb is tuned for the extra weight.

      @@jcx2bby seriously? the valve cover is on the front of the motor. its that triangle cover thing.

    good video, bro, however... NEVER, EVER... use fuel that was in gas tank, or carb. If you take the time to disassemble carb, tank, etc... it's not at all worth re-contaminating the whole circuit again. We use a gas can and store all bad gas in it until full, then use it to start fire out back, or clean some kinds of parts...(some kinds will be damaged by gasoline). i believe oil change service centers will accept old gas for a fee.....may need to google that yourself.

    My issue is gas coming out into the air filter. Any idea how to fix that issue?

      Sounds like a stuck float to me. Have you already disassembled the carb?

    • @mikecrew9329
      @mikecrew9329 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did. The float dropped down when I held it upright. I went to my local small engine shop and tried to order new rings and a float needle. They recommend I just replace the whole carburetor.

    In my case it was just the needle.. But it alone costs half the cost of carbie

      It should be stamped into the metal cover around the top or front of the engine.

      @@tl2135 , gotta still be some junk up in there blocking the fuel flow. As some others have commented, there is another step to teardown that white jet assembly even further that I didn't cover in this vid. You may have to go that extra mile to get proper fuel flow established

      Well, sure, if you already know how these carbs work. I made this video for people that don't have any idea how engines work and are interested in fixing them their selves. The best way to show them, and for them to learn, is to take it all apart.
