I went to the US for a few months and every day I was shaking my head in disbelief at how they didn't have meat pies. The meat pie is the sign of an advanced civilisation.
I lived there for 20 years and a month before I left I went to Upper Michigan and had Cornish Pasties there. OMG they were divine! Never saw a meat pie in all those years except a chicken pot pie that had no base.
My nephew moved to Colorado, some years ago and opened a pie shop that was very popular. He has since moved to California and given up the pie business. 😊
To be fair, resisting eating a pie for 20min will leave you being able to eat it without it being complete lava. as the cop said in an old kiwi meme, always blow on the pie
I've eaten pies all over NZ and Oz, and my favourite - by a long way - is the Beef Wellington from The Lunch Shack in Hawera. It's a pretty modest looking place that's easy to miss, but all of their pies are top tier.
The yummiest pies I have ever tried in New Zealand are the Pork Belly & Apple Sauce with Crackling pies at Fairlie Bakehouse in the town Fairlie on SH8 enroute to Mount Cook from Christchurch. They are so good that at lunchtime, the queue goes through their cafe, out the door, and way down the road along the footpath. And the crackling is actually baked into the pastry which is the lid of the pie. I'm a Kiwi, so I know all about New Zealand pies.
I'm pretty sure they sell as PJs pies at my supermarket in Dunedin. I LOVE them. The pork is so savory, soft and moist, and the apple is creamy and sweet. Oh god, now I'm starving.
If you're ever in Auckland, Blue Rose Cafe In Sandringham has amazing Polynesian inspired pies like: The Palusami pie - Corned beef (not the tinned stuff) Taro leaves, onion, coconut cream and a little chili The Hangi Pie - Pork belly, stuffing, kumara and pumpkin Lamb, taro and cream cheese pie The Boil up pie - Bacon bones watercress and potato and a few more amazing pies that have to be tried.
Just a comment about the whipped cream. Lots of places nowadays use cream from a whipped cream dispenser called a Whippit, sometimes spelled whippet or whip-it, they have a cartridge of nitrous oxide (nangs) which squirts the cream out under pressure when the trigger is squeezed. The cream looks as though it's whipped but, because the process is different it actually reverts to a sloppy, slightly watery mess not long afterwards. I'm betting the reason you felt the whipped cream in your iced coffee was somehow thicker is because it had been whipped the old school way, using beaters until it thickened. Much better end result and stays whipped and thick for ages afterwards and makes more sense if they're using it in the kind of quantities they'd need to coat the inside of glasses. Lots of places only use whipped cream to squirt on top of a serving of cake so it's much more practical for them to just use a Whippit even though the end result is a bit rubbish.
I mean it's still going to be better comparing it to American whipped cream, which is almost always from a can. I haven't ever had problems with whippets, though I must say I've never let it sit for even a short time.
Hi, some of my favourites, Steak & Kidney, Steak & Oyster, Steak, Steak & Cheese, Ham & Egg, Pulled Pork, Thai Curry, Madras Curry. Oh hell, There are heaps more. What I have come to realise is that some of the best Pie Bakery’s are owned by the Vietnamese! Brilliant and very inventive. Cheers mate Harera
The cream in the coffee much like the milk will be actual decent milk from grass fed cows, you would of noticed NZ being very grassy and green, that translates to good food for cows, which in return gives NZ the worlds best dairy, beef and lamb, grassfed compared to grainfed is very different.
Mate , you have to try the bacon and egg pie from spring creek in Marlborough, it's the best , I'm a truck driver , so us truckies know where the best pies are . Period.
Just a heads up if anyone is looking for cheap pies, quiches and sweet slices etc in Tauranga. Raymons Pies have a wee store open to the public at the front of their factory, which is at the very end of Cypress St in Judea. They sell their food at wholesale prices there, so way cheaper than you'd pay at a retail bakery. For example a long slice of custard square (equivalent of three) is only $2.50. Definitely worth a look if you want reasonable food for a cheap price. Hope this helps someone. 😊
I would recommend the Waiwhetu Bakery in Lower Hutt. Steak and blue cheese would be a nice one to try. I was going there every day when i lived in Wellies. There's a wicked view on top of the Wainuiomata hill lookout just 5 minutes from the bakery as well
If you come to the South island you should definitely visit these two bakeries in Marlborough and try their pies: Burleigh pie shop in Blenheim, and Renwick bakery on main street of Renwick attached to the butcher shop.
I'm glad you're enjoying our food! Pop over the cook straight and try a pie from the Burleigh gourmet pie shop in Blenheim. I've only had their vegetarian pies but they are the most popular pies in the region and sell out often.
Kumara is what Americans call sweet Potato. Ever travel to the South island of NZ. Visit Oamaru there near the old dock is a penguin colony during breading season they're everywhere and these are little cute one's called Blue Penguin.
Kumara is pretty much sweet potato. As you said, the top 2 most popular pie flavours in NZ are mince 'n' cheese and steak 'n' cheese, but the 3rd is probably a toss up between bacon and egg and potato top. Also, curry pies like butter chicken and Thai curry pies are becoming popular and I quite like most of the ones I've tried, not everyone's cup of tea though.
My partner (swampshack) introduced me to ur content and we watch it together all the time, we’ve loved seeing you develop as a creator so far and are so excited to see what you do next!
I love how much you love the food! Most places have pretty good pies. If you are ever in Tauranga head to Patrick's Pies in Bethlehem, you will be impressed with all the awards everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE in their shop and the pies and creative flavours do not disappoint! If you eat a pie straight away remember to blow on the pie! A very common kiwi saying because the lava hot gravy and pie insides will burn the top of your mouth if a decently made pie! And a lil controversial for some people but if it is your standard mince, mince and cheese, steak, steak and cheese, or potatoe top pie, some Wattie's tomato sauce goes great on top! Loo forward to watching more of your adventures!
Wow! That bakery is amazing - we live just around the corner from them. When we were renovating our villa, we would buy lunches there - the least we could do, we were using their toilet! If I got there quick enough, I could get the potato top pie - mince inside. They would have a slice of tomato in melted cheese on top of the mashed potato - amazing! Though they no longer seem to use tomato on them. And they use real cream in the cakes and eclairs - you never end up with that nasty taste in the back of your throat like you do with mock cream.
There’s a place in central Otago about 30 mins south of Queenstown called Athol, they have a restaurant/bakery/BBQ smokehouse there called the Athol Shop I think but they do incredible in-house baked pies. Had one of their pulled pork, apple and thyme ones and it was mouth-wateringly good!
Everyone in NZ have their favourite pies...you got the mince pie right..the bag is designed to keep your hands some what clean...and to catch any of the insides that might drip out.....Cream doughnuts, cream apple turnovers....are something that needs a try.
Aaah! So many good pies to enjoy. My favourite (because I thought it was an unusual combination) was a Fairlie Bakery Salmon & Bacon pie. To die for. But Mariangi Bay Bakery has award winning pies as well. Many years ago I was visiting Tasmania and driving around the coast south of Hobart in the middle of nowhere, there was a bakery from where I bought their Seafood pie. Again, to die for, crammed with scallops, prawns, and other seafood. Don’t know if it still exists, as it was over 20 years ago. Best pie that I tasted in Oz when I was working there.
The West Coast Pie Company in Westport are the best pies, closely followed by Fat Bastard Pies in Invercargill. You can get both online shipped NZ wide. And always get the lamingtons with cream, NZ cream and all dairy products are amazing!
Patricia's pies in Kilbirnie are really good too, especially their large mince pie. It is interesting listening to different perspectives. Thanks and enjoy your trip.
If you make it down to Invercargill, we have a pie shop called FB Pies. It stands for 'Fat Bastard', but despite the coarse name, the pies are delicious. Kumara = Sweet Potato for anyone confused by the name. We Kiwis don't usually say the first 'a' properly, so the word sounds more like 'Koom-ra' in the Kiwi accent.
I'm a JAFA, that was down in Invercargill about a year ago, and I had a few Fat Bastard pies, and they were just awesome, especially the seafood one. And having tasted pies across NZ and Aussie, the two best pie shops for me is Ned Kelly pies in Beachworth Victoria and Fat Bastard Pies. Just my humble opinion,
I haven't been home (Wellington) in almost 10 years and I immediately recognize the suburb and street you're on haha I'm so jealous, no place like home!
Hey, cool video. A great place to get pies in Christchurch is Claude's Bakery on Ferry Road. But even a mainstream bakery like Coupland's (also one on Ferry Road) has amazing quality & cheaper prices. As for flavor well, I like Peppered Steak best. Yet, Steak & Mushroom or Bacon & Egg are also really good choices.
Ginger slice, depends where you buy it, they do vary. Best pies though? My absolute favorite pie of all time is the chicken & leek at Miss Fortunes cafe, on Hutt Park Road. And I've eaten a lot of pies from a lot of places over a lot of years!
When next in Kilbirnie, Wellington I'm going to try those pies. Where you stopped to eat, I believe was Evans or Shelly Bay. Shelly Bay used to be the site of a NZ naval base. The very next suburb is Miramar where Weta Workshop and Peter Jackson's movie operation is. The filming is actually done at a former naval land-based facility in Miramar, when I last checked it out they had built a huge green screen mounted on a stack of shipping containers, really cool.
It would be a mistake to not try those pies if you're in the area! That's some pretty cool history about the area, thanks for the info! I hope you enjoyed the video!
Best pies come from Ferg bakery in Queenstown, their Boston donuts are fantastic too. Next best pies are in little river just outside of Christchurch on the way to Akaroa
As a kiwi living in Australia, i can confirm Australian pies are just not there. Who uses a pastry with the consistency of a moist biscuit? And steak that's 90% gravy? Mrs macs the pride and joy of Australia, that's who! 🤮😂
Yeh our pies aren't as good but seriously if you're going to get a pie in Oz go to a good bakery do not buy that Mac shit, the best commercial pies in Oz are villies stuff mac
So nice to see you enjoying kiwi bakery goods! My favourite pies are potato top, mince and cheese, curry mince. The lamb and kumara (sweet potato) pie you had sounds awesome too. ps. Every year there's a national pie competition - you could see who got the top awards and check them out.
Hi 👋 I'm a Kiwi and have been to the USA. I can't remember eating a pie when I was there. So I can't comment on American pies. I liked the diners , and the bottomless cups of coffee. Buy one and get more cups for free. The cafes don't do that here. I'm pleased you like our pies.
Drexels in Riccarton CHCH is a USA style breakfast bar. They do bottomless cups of coffee tea etc at least they used to. Very nice food too. It's always packed though especially on weekends so booking a table is essential if a few of you are going. Recommend it.
The only way to eat a red lamington is with cream. At the shop where I first tried them they were called Joy Boys. The chocolate variety, also with cream, aren't as good but personal preference I guess.
To think Brock, 10 - 15 years ago we did have not a great selection of pies - Mince, Steak or Bacon & Egg. Look how far we have progressed !! Great video & location -thank you
Yeah that's not true - I remember being amazed by the concept of a Thai chicken curry pie, then wowed by the taste, that I got from a frigging BP!!! in 2003 or 2004. If we had them in gas stations 20 years ago then they were elsewhere before then.
I haven't looked to see what other videos you have posted but if you haven't already, get a gourmet pizza from Hell Pizza and be sure to try the Unearthly dessert pizza. Afghans and melting moments are also both traditional NZ biscuits worth trying if you haven't already.
Nada Bakery has won a bunch of national pie awards. Their pepper steak and the pork crackling and apple pie go hard. They have a shop in Johnsonville and Tawa (just outside Wellington)
My fav pies are the humble mince and cheese and also butter chicken pies. Glad you loved the lamington. It's one of my fav bakery items alongside the lolly cakes (which is actually super easy to make).
I recommended that too, I think the one in Bethlehem, Tauranga would impress him with the awards they have hanging up EVERYWHERE! Haha. Would make for a good place to go to for a TH-cam video!
My favpurite pie would have to be pepper and steak, I enjoy a bit of a spicy/peppery kick, you know? (You should try a pepper and steak). My cake of choice have to be the neenish tart, its got such a nice creamy texture and a solid chocolaty top, and its actually satisfying to bite into (you should definitely try it as well). I hope you have a great time in New Zealand and if I see you around here in Wellington, I will definitely say hi.
One must try Kiwi slice is the Denheath Custard Square, from a bakery in Pleasant Point in the South Island, but they are sold lots of places now. Other Kiwi favourites for slices are Tan Square (a caramel one), Raspberry Slice, Belgian Square, and Nana’s Fudge Cake.
Oslers pies, Marine Parade in Wairoa, Hawkes Bay. Winners of multiple awards. So if you ever head to Gisborne from Napier, be sure to stop for an Osler's pie
I went to the US for a few months and every day I was shaking my head in disbelief at how they didn't have meat pies. The meat pie is the sign of an advanced civilisation.

Oh no you should of jumped off the nearest tallest building when you realised Americans dont do meat pies

My guy just smashed two pies on the side of the road, thats a bona-fide kiwi fine-dining experience right there!
Second only to driving with your knees and smashing it on the road
Man smashed two pies, a ginger slice and a lamington.. without a drink 👀
THIS New Zealander is in awe 🤣

Welcome too nz my guy 🤙💯

Fairlie Bakehouse / Fairlie, South Island NZ - Best Pies in the South Island.
They're overrated
Pork belly top tier
$9.50 for a fair lie pie is so overrated.
Try Jimmies pies ...in Roxburgh, but can get them all around the lower South Island.
100%
I am so invested in this. My heart is filled with patriotic pride as you enjoy our national cuisine.
Love how all the Kiwis are just saying their favourite pie places.
We have to 😂😂
That's how We find our way around the place Bro ! from pie shop to pie shop
We've got hundreds of 'World's best pies' here in Oz. I'll still try em all 👍
Ps I have to give it up....we don't do pastry like this anymore.
For a first timer those selections were amazing. I don't understand why they aren't a thing in the states. Lamb and Kumura sounds delicious
My nephew moved to Colorado, some years ago and opened a pie shop that was very popular. He has since moved to California and given up the pie business. 😊

Sheffield Pies in Sheffield on Arthur's Pass Road. Try the Venison and Whisky pie. You'll find the same pie in Oxford. You won't be disappointed.
The best pie I have eaten worldwide
Anything with a bit of bambi is definitely on my list.
If you're ever in Auckland, Blue Rose Cafe In Sandringham has amazing Polynesian inspired pies like:
The Palusami pie - Corned beef (not the tinned stuff) Taro leaves, onion, coconut cream and a little chili
The Hangi Pie - Pork belly, stuffing, kumara and pumpkin
Lamb, taro and cream cheese pie
The Boil up pie - Bacon bones watercress and potato
and a few more amazing pies that have to be tried.
I was really disappointed with Blue Rose cafe's pies. There are so many better places.
Overrated pies
Na bro, sorry those are trash. There's so many better places on the Shore.
Bland nz taste buds. 😅
They're good for the advance pie eater wouldn't recommend to a first timer
Fairlie Bakery pies, in the South Island. The apple and porkbelly is awesome. We go out of our way on trips down south to go there.

Cafe 35 - Tokomaru Bay. The Paua Pies are amazing.
Iconic - even mentioned in a song
Daily Bread Bakery - Waiwhetu/Wellington or Patrisha's Pies in Island Bay/Wellington (small corner shop)
The bakery in manum on the Murray River in South Australia are the best I've ever had.
Nice video young fella, we enjoyed watching:)
Try the pies from Mr Bun in Miramar, loved getting them during lunch in high school
I'm writing this down in my notes, if I try it I will let you know what I think! Thank you for the suggestion!
Supreme Bakery 🙌
Ginger slice, depends where you buy it, they do vary. Best pies though? My absolute favorite pie of all time is the chicken & leek at Miss Fortunes cafe, on Hutt Park Road. And I've eaten a lot of pies from a lot of places over a lot of years!
Daily bread bakery in Lower Hutt is the best
you have to go to Daily Bread in waiwhetu, Lower Hutt! it will be your new favourite!
If you're ever up in Hawkes Bay; check out Shane-o's in Hastings, the Brisket pie is incredible.
Hammer Springs bakery had a crayfish (lobster) pie a few weekends ago. Was claimed as delicious but it was $50 so it should have been.
I’ve only been to Wellington once and it was the first bakery I went to. Such a good spot
The last time I had a Mrs Mac's "steak" pie, the label should have read "tough steak and (mostly)gristle pie".
Mrs macs that's getting desperate mate haha
I miss NZ pies so much... you just don't get those cheap-n-cheerful local bakeries that are everywhere in NZ
I’m gonna just go ahead and list my complaint. Got a pie in eastern Sydney…… not gonna name and shame the suburb.
BREAD INSTEAD OF PASTRY.
The closest they have to a pie,is a chicken pot pie, nowhere near as nice.
@@Andy_M986 Sounds nice. I like chicken.
Denny's used to have bottomless coffees but it's only the filter stuff. More kiwis prefer flatewhites & espresso.
Drexels in Riccarton CHCH is a USA style breakfast bar. They do bottomless cups of coffee tea etc at least they used to. Very nice food too. It's always packed though especially on weekends so booking a table is essential if a few of you are going. Recommend it.
@bush600r2 If I'm im CH CH I'll check it out. Thanks.
Great video & location -thank you
NZ has had places with great specialty pies for decades. There are lot more around these days, though, and more varieties.
That's interesting! I would've never guessed! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching! 😁👍
Yeah that's not true - I remember being amazed by the concept of a Thai chicken curry pie, then wowed by the taste, that I got from a frigging BP!!! in 2003 or 2004. If we had them in gas stations 20 years ago then they were elsewhere before then.
WHAT? 😂 NZ's pie selections have only been available in the last 15 - 20 years? What a total load of bollacks lol.
Their Rueben pie is fantastic.
I think ubereats delivers to wellington though
Thank you this was awesome, I'm from wellington and I'm off to cupcake bakery for a pie, take care out there😊
I'm glad you enjoyed the video!!! Hopefully your food was good! Let me know if you enjoyed it!
"No way Australia can beat these" Chur Bro +1 like
Keep dreaming. 😅
Why do you guys have the worst takeaways and bakerys in NZ because you don't know any better.
@@grantrichards7128 g shut up nz Topps it
@@grantrichards7128 someones butt hurt hahaha.... go eat your flavourless food mate
As an Aussie who has been in nz for years, nz wipes the floor with pies vs aus, sausage rolls also. Aus wins for kebabs and servo chips though
If you go to Whakatane try a Paua Pie at All the Sands. It's a creamed abalone pie.
you should try the leaven bakery in levin, they have amazing pies
Dont forget the fish and chips bro❤
OMG YES ITS SO GOOD I HAVE IT EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT
My fav pies are the humble mince and cheese and also butter chicken pies.
Glad you loved the lamington. It's one of my fav bakery items alongside the lolly cakes (which is actually super easy to make).
Patricks Pies have 2 stores in Tauranga, and they're amazing
I recommended that too, I think the one in Bethlehem, Tauranga would impress him with the awards they have hanging up EVERYWHERE! Haha. Would make for a good place to go to for a TH-cam video!
I went to Patricks pies when I was in Nz in April… man….. what tasty pies… it’s very very hard to find a good pie here in Aus😢
@@bradfromaus8527 glad you loved them!
@@bradfromaus8527that's because there aren't any good pies in Australia.
New zealand Pies are the best
there's something about the way food tasters in New Zealand- it's more real than in other countries
@@kelbatt7729 We use real meat, not that roided up American stuff
One must try Kiwi slice is the Denheath Custard Square, from a bakery in Pleasant Point in the South Island, but they are sold lots of places now. Other Kiwi favourites for slices are Tan Square (a caramel one), Raspberry Slice, Belgian Square, and Nana’s Fudge Cake.
*Oscars Kiwi Kafe* in Inglewood, NZ has the best pies in the country hands down...🥧 😋
This city girl approves!
Welcome to Aotearoa nz😊i like ur videos hope you enjoyed our kiwi pies 😊
Thank you, I'm happy to hear you like the videos! I love this beautiful country and the friendly people here! The kiwi pies are amazing!
If you go throw Otaki , a shop called Salute make a unbelievable pie .
Second this, pies beyond the /10 scale
Best pies in NZ unquestionably, scratch that Salut have got both NZ and Oz covered
YES!!! Every time we drive through Kilbirnie we get raspberry lamingtons from that cafe!! SOOOOOO GOOD!
Oslers pies, Marine Parade in Wairoa, Hawkes Bay. Winners of multiple awards. So if you ever head to Gisborne from Napier, be sure to stop for an Osler's pie
So happy to see this! I crave the Boil Up Pies daily 😊
Okay
Olivers Bakery on Kepa Road, Auckland. They make very good pies and sweet treats.
