The downfall of cabruary, they tried changing back but it was too late and now the factory in NZ is closed down.
Good. fk cadbury and their palm oil bullshit. Just put the price up instead. dont screw with the ingredients. More than happy to keep buying Whittakers in Australia. Top shelf chocolate.
Yeah - they were trying to improve the numbers before the sale to Kraft in 2010. They shrank the bars, switched to less environmentally friendly packaging that disguised the reduced size, and put palm oil in, so you got less chocolate. The palm oil was the last straw for me. Farming of palm oil is responsible for deforestation, and loss of habitat, driving species to extinction. The Pineapple Lumps used to be better, but Pascals changed their recipe and they are not as good as they used to be. With the chocolate milk, when it first came out you had to line up to get it and the you were limited to how many you could get at a time, even then you were lucky to get one as they kept selling out and they couldn't keep up with the production. Didn't get to try one until six months had passed, haven looked back since, but you are right they are a real treat item due to the cost. But soooo worth it :) When we have a BBQ or family get together the fights over the onion dip can get a bit intense.

Tip for making your dip, keep your reduced cream in the fridge then when you make it you can eat it straight away and you don't have to wait for it to set in the fridge
Pineapple lumps are usually more chewy like nougat but will be hard if cold (some ppl prefer them that way and will freeze them). Scorched almonds are the xmas gift for people who you don't care about, but Graze skinny-dipped almonds are amazing.
@@MeoithTheSecond I agree Cadbury roses or a box of favourites are for people you don’t care about that much. I remember getting my dad scorched almonds for Christmas or Father’s Day
K-Bars, Toffee Milks (both Whitaker's products), Toffee Pops, Foxton Fizz. The dip can be more 'gourmet' made with french onion soup. Spaceman candy sticks. Buzz Bars. Mayceys confectionary range (jersey caramels!). Paua fritters. Whitebait fritters. Kina on steak (surf and turf for wildmen). Manuka smoked eel. Mountain oysters. And Marmite on Vogels toast with NZ butter. And don't forget Whitaker's white chocolate, there is nothing..., nothing, quite like it.
This comment gave me nostalgia and made my mouth water. Speaking of kiwi seafood, Lobster hangi is incredible. Whitebait are endangered btw, not gonna be the guy to tell you to cut it from your life, just trying to spread awareness as I want people to be able to whitebait with their families like I did as a kid.
@@kronicbucky As do I. The entire coast where I live is under rahui. The family land has a coastal creek with good whitebait each year, fished only for 2 weeks. (A delicacy not a complete food source). Why they closed our coast here was from hundreds of outside vehicles and to be openly honest, Asian migrants. Their specialty was wiring the rocks, in which doing, everything is taken. Driving from as far as Auckland and Hawkes Bay for a tide these wankers are now noted, and their tyres slashed. We have a smaller legal paua size here, and the outsiders were taking the lot, tide after tide.
Thanks for the video... making me homesick 😄. An iconic Kiwi dessert, at least for me, are Brandy Snaps (filled with NZ fresh-whipped cream of course).
You're making me nostalgic! My mum used to make these when I was a kid, especially around Christmas. It used to be my job to fill them with cream and I always made a complete mess of it, lol!
You gotta get stuff that's flavoured like the INSIDE cream part of the feijoa - not the sour outer green skin or the "whole" thing. Lots of smoothies ruin it by having the skin in there. I know you CAN eat it... maybe I'm just a feijoa snob. My husband eats the skin of kiwifruit too, fuzz and all.
fun fact. If you go to porirua city durung the week between 9-5 you have a good chance of smelling the chocolate in the air all throughout the city because the factory is there melting the chocolate down to mold it
Me and my wife live in Brazil, and we're moving to NZ in a few weeks. Your channel is very entertaining and has shown us a lot of information and insights about the country that we didn't get elsewhere. Keep it up the good work, man! We love your channel!
Welcome to NZ! What part of NZ will you be living in? If you discover a NZ source for Brazilian foods (especially aceite de dende and carne seca, let me know)!

@@Oamaruastro Auckland! I'm sure as hell am going to search for these unique Brazilian foods, don't worry hahaha. But we're actually very excited to try the Asian and Indian food throughout the city. We love spicy food!
OSM bars are made by Cookie Time and they are the NZ go to hiking bar. I miss NZ very much. When you cracked open the L & P, I nearly shed tear 😢 I love that you donated to the food bank too! Chur 🤙
Yep OSM - One Square Meal made by Cookie Time are a big surprise hit for them. It's a must have bar on any hike or afternoon break. They are expensive but worth every cent. My sister & brother in law from Wales were hooked when I gave them a box for their tour around NZ
If you want a definite improvement on the texture of the pineapple lumps, leave them in the fridge for a bit before you eat them, you'll thank me later! ;) Also it was great to see a shoutout for Kaibosh, I know a few people who volunteer there. To anyone reading this in the Wellington area with money to spare, that's a damn good place to put it
Give Puhoi valley chocolate milk a go too if you haven't already. Also try the ice coffee flavour, no word of a lie its the smoothest and creamiest damn drink Ive ever had
Yes you chose the right chips to go with onion dip! Awesome video... Some classic kiwi things are hokey pokey ice cream (Tip top) and Pavlova which is 200 percent from Nz, even though the Aussies try to claim it :)
Omg! I'm so glad you liked our snacks! A classic kiwi dessert are lamingtons! Australians always say lamingtons are australian, but we kiwis know they're really from NZ :D
@@michellecourtney780 the earliest record was for a state dimmer in Wellington. Believe that debate has now been settled in NZs favour. Lamingtons are definately Australian. Belive from Queensland named after Lord Lamington.
@@brianhogg9857 I think you’ll find it used to be called desiccated coconut sponge and was first seen in a New Zealand portrait by JR Smythe in 1888. Lamington was governor between 96 and 1901
Scorched Almonds have never gone out of fashion even back when I was a kid in the 80’s. They are normally only purchased at Xmas at the supermarket checkout when you release you need to get the kids something for their stockings. You should also review Milo, Burger Rings, and Mallowpuffs.
THE iconic kiwi chocolate bar is the Whitkars Peanut Slab. The milk chocolate one is the original (not the dark or the almond). I remember being so annoyed when Cadbury's tried to steal/ copy this and brought out the 'Slab', exact small size. Thank goodness local Kiwi's refused to buy it and it is no longer!! Of course the NZ Marmite goes without saying, it's thicker than the UK version. Other classic childhood treats that you can normally only get from the local dairy are K-bars and Toffee Milk bars. Both are hard, tooth breaking bars, especially the K-bar. You have to really suck on this one! These are both from Whittakers. Original Toffee Pop biscuits are a classic. There is a technique for eating these that is also important for a lot of fans. You nibble the fluted edge of the biscuit first, before eating the rest! Tip Top brand Jelly tip ice creams (on a stick). Ice cream sandwich, with the square vanilla ice-cream sandwiched between two slices of pink wafers. You are going to be busy!!
The almond version is superior to the nasty peanut bar. The chocolate is brittle and the peanuts taste funny. That's a no from me. But I grab the almond bar every time I'm at the check out 🐖🐷
I don’t know if they have them still, but there were these milkshake lollies which were awesome. The other were these white chocolate skulls which had raspberry syrup inside the head. They were great, you used to be able to buy a bag of mixed lollies for 10c back in the 80s as a kid.
As an alternative for your dip, and still sticking with Maggi, try adding Bacon & Onion soup mix or Pumpkin & Garlic soup mix to the reduced cream instead of just standard onion. You wont be disappointed.
I have been buying my mum scorched almonds for birthdays and Christmas for as long as I can remember, didn’t realise they were a New Zealand thing though
its become a bit varied, sometimes its like that, sometimes it just hard enough to crack like you hear in the video. Personally ive become a fan of freezing them
I visited the UK a few months ago for the first time, had 2 different chocolate milks there and I don’t know if I’m just spoiled here but man they were awful 😂
@@itscurlsbaby Before you toast the rolls under the grill in the oven, try lightly brushing some of them with melted butter. It makes the outside a bit like the bread in a 'toasted sandwich'. Nice opportunity to compare which way you prefer. As for the cheese, we always used a fairly tasty cheddar - and were pretty generous with it too. :-) And don't forget to turn them so they get toasted on both sides.
A few things I recommend, definitely the Peanut Slab, toastie bar, which is marshmallow, covered in chocolate and coconut. Puhoi Belgian chocolate milk, Lollie cake, peanut brittle, Griffins Macaroons,at room temperature, and if you can find them near you, Cheese rolls.
I stopped eating Cadbury when they went over to Aussie because they changed most of the rose's chocolates. Whittaker's are awesome and so many products now. If you get Whittaker's in anything at least you know it is going to be good. Have you tried the old salad dressing recipe with condensed milk? I always have it on my salad in the summer time.
Whittakers was a small but well known local brand...I'm 65 and can remember Whittaker Sante Bars...unwrapped dark chocolate sticks after school. Cadbury was a major player, but changed the recipe to include palm oil...to raise the melting point. The market went apeshit and suddenly Whittakers became huge.
A LOT of people I know prefer to put their Pineapple Lumps (still unopened in bag) in the freezer for at least an hour, I myself don’t mind either but I do know 8/10 people I know prefer the freezer option of Pineapple Lumps
Vogels original bread toasted with anything on it, but buttered with vegemite or avocado, a squeeze of lemon and salt and pepper or spread with mayo, freshly sliced tomatoes sprinkled with lemon pepper and salt are all great
If you like the homemade onion dip and you if you like or are fond of seafood try using a seafood soup mix instead of the onion and a dash of vinegar, it's quite tasty. Also Bluebird makes a thick cut version of the salt and vinegar chips/crisps you like. Kiwi made foodstuffs are generally better but Cadbury's products have changed now so I'm very much a devotee of Whittaker's chocolate.
You are correct! Us kiwi's do know how to make good snacks and treats 😉 My favorite part of this video was when you drank the whittakers chocolate / lewis road creamery milk. The face you made is enough to let people know it's a delicious drop of liquid refreshment! I am enjoying your videos! Keep it up!
Nice vid. Scorched almonds have been around for 50 or 60 years in NZ. May I recommend that you try making Southland Cheese Rolls with the onion dip - you'll love them. They're iconic.
Dude the kiwi onion dip with salt n vinegar is one of the best flavors. I can smash a whole bowl (and regret it later) without realising. Was stoked to see you chose Salt and vinegar naturally. Def the best to try. Id be keen to see you try our beers if you're a drinker. Compare them to your own favorites. Would like to know how tui or steinlarger matches up.
Tapping the top of a can helps distribute the air bubbles. I prefer the blue V myself as it isn't as sweet as the green one. Scorched Almonds were my mum's favorite and yes I would give them to her for Xmas almost every year. It is very easy to disappear suddenly. The Lewis Road Creamery if you shake it up the chocolate at the bottom makes the drink even more delicious 😋
OMG I remember when that first came out. For months it was only available in the North Island, we were spitting tacks in the south. I happened to be visiting Wellington, so I started going around supermarkets to find some. Gave up after the 5th. Then when we finally got it in Dunedin, people found out when the shelves were being stocked and would actually queue by the fridge! It kept selling out instantly and it was a few weeks before I finally got some.
I wanna say that pronunciation of paeroa was so awesome and it was so cool you tried to pronounce it properly. It felt so funny to hear it pronounced properly in an overseas video.
Small Fact sipping Milo through Tim Tams came from New Zealand its been a thing here for a long time. Before Tim Tams there were Chit Chats and we used those here. Like a lot of things Australians likes to take what we made up, give it a new name and claim they came up with it.
Definitely try the dip with some chopped carrots, length ways, or some celery an absolute banger. Don’t use vinegar though it tastes horrible in my opinion so take that as you will and try it with ready salted or sour cream and chives chips they’re really too.
Whittakers had 100s & 1000s pink chocolate and it absolutely blew my mind at how good it was. So gutted it was limited but you gotta try it if it ever comes back again 👌👌
The cool thing with onion dip and using the soup mix, is that you can swap out the onion for any other soup. I love the pumpkin and I’ve heard of people using the seafood. Lewis Roads is the best and they bring out new flavours all the time. There’s another brand of flavoured milk, you might wanna try, which is Puhoi. My cousin loves it.
For the kiwi dip great combinations are carrots and celery. The obvious/most common is plain crackers or chips . Also I would add the "creamy seafood" sachet is also a very yummy dip if you like that seafood chowder taste (its usually for chowder but it's in the same packet as the onion dip)
Triple chunk was the correct choice for Cookie Time. :) Further suggestions... you should try a sample of classic Kiwi bakery items from your local neighbourhood bakery (not the BP station!)... classic cream and jam donut, cream-filled lamington, cream-filled apple turnover (I sense a pattern!), custard square, custard pie, apricot pie, apple strudel. And of course meat pies - especially classic steak and cheese, steak and mushroom, potato top mince etc...
Scorched Almonds They are best after being stored in the fridge or freezer overnight. Always take a box with you when you get invited out for dinner at a friends house.
Your selection was ace!! All my favourite things. When you’re in Auckland we should take you to do some ethnic food tastings too! (Island food, māori kai etc). Is it bad that I just got home from London and wish we had a Greggs here. 😂🤦🏽♀️

Cookie time goes in the microwave for 15-30 seconds. Melts those massive chunks of chocolate. Yum.
Now There's a thought
Now you're speaking my language! Gonna try this tonight. Will report back - cheers!
Need a glass of milk to go with that cookie if microwaved. You'll feel like Santa!
@@cairomiravity personally I favour a nice strong freshly brewed coffee
Back in intermediate the heated cookie time was the go to snack within my group of friends.
wow this guy is so nice and so respectful, it's awesome
Pineapple lumps are usually more chewy like nougat but will be hard if cold (some ppl prefer them that way and will freeze them). Scorched almonds are the xmas gift for people who you don't care about, but Graze skinny-dipped almonds are amazing.
Pfff... A box of Cabury Roses is the gift you give to people who you don't particularly care about ;).
@@MeoithTheSecond I agree Cadbury roses or a box of favourites are for people you don’t care about that much. I remember getting my dad scorched almonds for Christmas or Father’s Day
The l&p pineapple lumps they released a while ago were gross
@@camisado5681 I think I might be the only one who thought they were okay haha 😅
Best flavour of pineapple lumps which rivals the original has to be the mint flavour, loved those frozen.
You are clearly easily pleased with all the snacks we take for granted
Whitebait fritters! 🎉 Pippi fritters even better
Marmite on vogels is so underrated 🤤
Wuckin k-bars
See ya later fillings
😆😆😆
This comment gave me nostalgia and made my mouth water. Speaking of kiwi seafood,
Lobster hangi is incredible.
Chocolate Fish, Buzz Bars, Peanut Slab
Mellow Puffs, Cameo Creams, Griffins Ginger Nuts and my favourite Sultana Pasties.
Jaffa Milk Shake. 😍
Thanks for the video... making me homesick 😄. An iconic Kiwi dessert, at least for me, are Brandy Snaps (filled with NZ fresh-whipped cream of course).
Brandy Snaps are awesome
Yeah,baby.
You're making me nostalgic! My mum used to make these when I was a kid, especially around Christmas. It used to be my job to fill them with cream and I always made a complete mess of it, lol!
For sure and ambrosia
Brandy snaps r awesome
Hokey Pokey ice cream 110% a kiwi classic
Have you tried Feijoas? There's actually a fair amount of things you can buy that are feijoa flavoured as well like lollies, sorbet, and fizzy drinks.
no hate to feijoa enjoyers, but goddamnit do they taste like how deep heat smells

If you want a definite improvement on the texture of the pineapple lumps, leave them in the fridge for a bit before you eat them, you'll thank me later! ;)
Also it was great to see a shoutout for Kaibosh, I know a few people who volunteer there. To anyone reading this in the Wellington area with money to spare, that's a damn good place to put it
I can remember in my youth, some 40 odd years ago, that Southern Comfort and L&P, was a very popular drink, very sweet, but too easy to drink too much
My cousins drink L&P with Soju. They're into the Korean dramas and call themselves geniuses for finding out the mix
L&P with Canadian Club is the go known as CCL&P😋

Give Puhoi valley chocolate milk a go too if you haven't already. Also try the ice coffee flavour, no word of a lie its the smoothest and creamiest damn drink Ive ever had
The mint chocolate version is delicious too
Prefer Puhoi too
I second this. The world knows NZ milk is best but they've only had Fonterra. Puhoi is even better.
@@michelleheal8419 omg i didn't even know they had a mint version. It's on my list for the next grocery shop!
It's like the pavalova debate. It was made by a kiwi who lived in Australia at the time for Anna Pavalova

Scorched almonds have been around in NZ for DECADES, I remember having them as a kid (I'm currently 40)
They were around when I was a kid - I'm 55. They are most definitely NOT a new thing out.
I'm 61 and this was the standard birthday present for my mum, well before I was in buying range.
Scorched Almonds have never gone out of fashion even back when I was a kid in the 80’s. They are normally only purchased at Xmas at the supermarket checkout when you release you need to get the kids something for their stockings.
You should also review Milo, Burger Rings, and Mallowpuffs.
Not kiwi tho
That pronunciation of Paeroa was amazing!
Why, this does bring a smile to my face...
Bars getting the recognition they deserve
French onion is another good one
Definitely Bacon and Onion.
Seafood flavored soup with reduced cream is also 😋
I quite like adding finely grated cheddar cheese to the onion dip - then I get a cheese and onion and dip that I love just as much.
I have been buying my mum scorched almonds for birthdays and Christmas for as long as I can remember, didn’t realise they were a New Zealand thing though
Pineapple lumps used to be soft and slightly chewy. They must have changed them since I was a kid.
its become a bit varied, sometimes its like that, sometimes it just hard enough to crack like you hear in the video.
Personally ive become a fan of freezing them
Used to get scorched almonds for My dad every birthday and xmas - and that was 30+ years ago... so they have been around in NZ for ages.
I am a brit too and the choc milk over here in NZ far outweighs anything in the UK. Love your videos
the joy of being a huge dairy exporter haha
I visited the UK a few months ago for the first time, had 2 different chocolate milks there and I don’t know if I’m just spoiled here but man they were awful 😂
Mix grated cheese in the dip roll in a slice of bread and toast in the oven. Delicious.
That sounds absolutely unbelievable. Gonna give that a try this weekend
Brother, your pronunciation was fantastic. Well done and thank you for making the effort to learn Māori pronunciation
It fills my heart with joy to see you enjoying my childhood for some reason. Wish I could try these for the first time again.
As a fellow New Zealander you get my subscribe brother your reactions are awesome I grew up with all of those lol 😎👍
Let me say the cookie time cookies are better 30secs in microwave
You legend Rory! Thanks mate. I'll give the microwaved cookie time a go next time for sure!
I just moved to Auckland (from Canada) and I've had similar experiences trying all these snacks, lol!
Also, love the "Sapiens" flex in the background lmao
Pineapple lumps used to have an inna filling who's texture was a lot more like mashmellow
You still get those ones, some bags are hard some are soft, I just give the bag a lil squeeze to find the ones I like
I think he bought stale old packet, give the packet a squueze before buying
Whittakers was a small but well known local brand...I'm 65 and can remember Whittaker Sante Bars...unwrapped dark chocolate sticks after school. Cadbury was a major player, but changed the recipe to include palm oil...to raise the melting point. The market went apeshit and suddenly Whittakers became huge.
A LOT of people I know prefer to put their Pineapple Lumps (still unopened in bag) in the freezer for at least an hour, I myself don’t mind either but I do know 8/10 people I know prefer the freezer option of Pineapple Lumps
Tapping the top of the can moves the bubbles from the wall of the can to the top which helps keep water from overflowing when cracking the can
This is what I needed to hear! You are different levels mate, thank you for that
I still do it! Actually did it last night with my can of Guinness 🤣
Vogels original bread toasted with anything on it,
but buttered with vegemite
or avocado, a squeeze of lemon and salt and pepper
or spread with mayo, freshly sliced tomatoes sprinkled with lemon pepper and salt
are all great
I am so proud of our culture. I am so happy someone has recognised the beauty ❤
NZ culture is still 75% British inherited.
Cadbury's not even made in NZ now.
I have never been able to find BB thick cut S&V chips
Ah bro I just love this post...making me miss home 😪🤤....definitely watching your posts, keep up the great work 👍
You are correct!
Your pronunciation of paeroa was near perfect mate, and better than half of us kiwis haha
Lewis Road and Whittakers are different companies that did a collaboration to make the chocolate milk. Both outstanding brands in their own right..
Ah I did not know this! Thank you, will correct this in a future video!
It kept selling out instantly and it was a few weeks before I finally got some.
i cracked up wen you said salt and viniger chips were your fav cus in my opinion they are the best thing to have with kiwi dip lol
Haha absolutely delicious right! They're the best flavour around, no question.
Scorched almonds have been around for decades. Love em!
Ahh I see! Delicious mate
I reckon cream paua and watercress boil up should be your next choices so yum! An acquired taste sometimes but I think they're sooo good
Paua, bacon and blue cheese balls, crumbed, deep fried, with mashed kumara.
Yeah in NZ for the dip we use a lot of things for dipping, such as
Chips
Crackers
Carrots
Cucumber
Celery

There’s a whole history behind the kiwi onion dip - Rosemary Dempsey was the lady who discovered this combo. Google the story - very interesting!
Whittakers had 100s & 1000s pink chocolate and it absolutely blew my mind at how good it was. So gutted it was limited but you gotta try it if it ever comes back again 👌👌
Was it like the hundreds and thousands biscuits icing?
Whittakers new Blondie is soooo good. Caramelised white chocolate. Beats Cadbury caramilk all day
That Lewis Road/Whittakers choccy milk really does hit the spot.
It’s nice with French onion soup
You are absolutely correct with choosing Blue over Green V. 💙
Very tasty mate!
Jimmy’s mince pies, you can’t get them on the north island tho and cheese rolls. Usually cheese rolls have a bit of that onion soup mix in em.
Didn't know that about the soup mix in the cheese rolls, cheers for the knowledge! Will give that a try on part 2 for sure.
Further suggestions... you should try a sample of classic Kiwi bakery items from your local neighbourhood bakery (not the BP station!)... classic cream and jam donut, cream-filled lamington, cream-filled apple turnover (I sense a pattern!), custard square, custard pie, apricot pie, apple strudel. And of course meat pies - especially classic steak and cheese, steak and mushroom, potato top mince etc...
