I work at the Duck Island kitchen, glad you like it. The buttery flavour from the Fairy Bread is the toasted Brioche that’s been infused in the ice cream. Next time grab the toasted marshmallow ❤
Most kiwis get their ice cream from the dairy or supermarket. Classic kiwi flavours are hokey pokey and boysenberry, although our biggest seller nationally is vanilla. Other ‘very kiwi’ flavours are jelly tip, choc-mint and strawberry
Orange chocolate chip is my favourite. NZ created 'jaffa'. Australia is just adopting it now. Soon they will be claiming 'jaffa' as theirs, like our Manuka honey & an Oz company has also purchased our pineapple lumps and another now own Tip Top ice cream 🙄. In order to find pineapple lumps, they are stocked in the Reject shop or cheaper end shops where end of line items are shelved. Not always stocked @ coles or Woolworths.
Kiwi flavours?? Mint chip and strawberry?? Nah. Goody goody gumdrops, hokey pokey, gold rush, rainbow, orange chip (jaffa). And jelly tip. These are KIWI flavours. Others may be possible, but can be found around the world
most traditional icecream here in nz would be hokey pokey, goody gumdrops, orange chocolate chip, boysenberry swirl and probably rainbow. defs give them all a try
Golden kiwifruit is much sweeter and less tangy than classic green. Classic ice cream in NZ is hokey pokey. Caffè Eis and Duck Island are gourmet shops. Try a corner store too
Fairybread is just buttered bread with 100s and 1000s(what you call sprinkles). Not sure if it's still a thing but we used to get ice creams in cones at the local dairy, 50c extra if you wanted it dipped in chocolate
I know you're in wellington, and it's not summer lol, but in summertime in Auckland, there's a strawberry farm that picks fresh strawberries that they grow themselves and they will mix you an ice cream to order. It's amazing. They also have other fresh vege they sell and other stuff, but the ice cream is the main attraction. The road will be all parked up and there are swarms of people there during peak summer.
@@ScootDoot1977 It is. Tbf I haven't been there since before covid happened but it's super packed every time I drive by in the summer. There's another place on puhinui that does it with strawberry and other types of berries mixed in, but there's not as many people that go to that one from what I've seen and the ice cream isn't as firm.
Sick vid bud! I think you should do a big NZ junkfood review! Squiggles, RJ's, Whittaker's, burger rings, Munchos, etc... There's so much more haha. Pick like 10 items and let us know what you think, cheers!
Ps most ice cream places do let you do a tester of flavors, so you can try a few and pick, just a tip to avoid buying triple massive ice creams. Also fairy bread is a kids party item of fresh white bread spread with butter and sprinkles
I just looked up Kaffee Eis as i hadn't heard of that. Seems it is just in Wellington. It did say that they make gelato which is either water based (sorbetto) or milk based as opposed to ice-cream which is cream based. That would explain the different texture to Duck Island as they are ice-cream.
I'm over on the West Island (Australia), and sometimes we are lucky enough to get Kapiti ice cream in ALDI here. They are soooooooo good 10/10 NZ dairy.
Are you still in Wellington and will you be doing Wellington on a Plate burgers? I feel like Wellington on a Plate burgers is a perfect match for this channel. The reason New Zealand has the best ice cream is because New Zealand produces the best cream, and the reason New Zealand produces the best cream is because New Zealand is one of the only countries where 100% of dairy cows eat almost 100% fresh grass. Cream from cows fed fresh grass has way more flavour than cream from cows fed manufactured grain-based feed.
Kapiti make the best ice cream from supermarket. Favourite is coffee ice cream and I do like kiwi fruit and boysenberry too. The best ice cream you can get is vanilla ice cream mixed with fresh fruit, strawberry my favourite.
Geez I'm kiwi and I didn't even know we ate the most ice cream but then again that explains why I get so many customers wanting ice cream even in winter.
Oh wow! I used to work around the corner on Garrett St and Kaffee Eis was my go-to for ice cream all year round. I have tried EVERY flavour and love them all! 😋❤
Fairy bread used to be traditional for children’s birthday parties. Thin sliced white bread butter and sprinkled with 100s & 1000s - tiny coloured candy balls
About 20 years ago there was a cafe in Kent Terrace Wellington in the old funeral parlour that did the most delicious licorice ice cream not the hard lumps but an intense liquid licorice. Love your review videos.
For the best ice cream in Palmerston North, Vist the Summerhays dairy at 566 Church Street. Served in a cone & dipped in liquid chocolate. It's wonderful.
Glad you made a good go of trying out both stores! As I think someone else has mentioned, there is a style difference between the two stores as Kaffee Eis does gelato and sorbetto, which are milk- and water-based, where as Duck Island does ice cream, which is regulated in NZ to require a minimum of 10% milk fat (typically from using cream) or else it has to be called something creative like "frozen dairy dessert". The we often call it all ice cream just the same. 🍧👅
Another great video Brock, thank you for your thoughts. But seriously, if you were to try NZ ice cream then you really should have done a trip to Pokeno where you could have tried any one of 40 flavours they have available and it would not cost you $12 for a triple scoop. Shame you are leaving but don't worry, now that I'm subscribed I will be sure to stay updated with your posts no matter where you are in the World. My personal favourites are Banana Berry Chocolate Chip (which I've only ever found at Pokeno), Mint Chocolate Chip & French Vanilla.
Perfectly acceptable to ask for a taste if you want to check out a flavour without buying a whole serve. Lots of places will do a 'kiddy cone' which is the smallest serve. As others have said, check out Rollikin Gelato, although they're technically gelato they're worth checking out for the hilarious names of their flavours. If you want to make homemade kiwi fruit ice-cream, it's super easy. I made some last year with ruby kiwifruit that was getting too ripe and it was outstanding. No churn icecream Ingredients 3 cups fruit purée 1 400g (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 2 cups heavy cream 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (optional) Stir fruit purée ( and vanilla extract, if using) into sweetened condensed milk. GENTLY fold in whipped cream. Pour into lidded freezer safe container and freeze. If the fruit you're using is especially sour add a drizzle of honey or maple syrup but, you probably won't need it. Works great with kiwifruit, bananas, strawberries and raspberries. Haven't tried it yet but, l bet puréed canned peaches and cinnamon would be great. Ice ream is best eaten within 3 months but, fine for much longer.
Yeah, we all pay for stuff with debit/eftpos cards to avoid the CC fees. We also have to pay attention to contact-less / NFC payments because often there is a surcharge for using them. The government is putting pressure on the banks to get that removed but so far no luck.
I have a debit card and some stores add a surcharge fee for Paywave but if you insert your card and enter pin manually, you won’t get the surcharge… I’m unsure if this applies to an actual credit card if that’s what you have…
How much weight have you put on since being in New Zealand? If you get to Hawke's Bay, visit Rush Munro's Ice Creamery in Hastings and Lick This on Marine Parade in Napier.
Brother man. I’m a Wellingtonian visiting your home soon too! Any recommendations for Orlando? I am taking a 7 night cruise via Royal and stopping to see Orlando!
Salted caramel mmmmm. A favorite of mine is Tip Top vanilla - very creamy. Interesting how you're from Florida ... I watch Sheriff Grady Judd from Polk County on TH-cam. Enjoy your videos and enjoy you enjoying your food 😊😊
you say normal (green) kiwifruit tastes a bit different to Golden-kiwifruit , but to me the difference is huge . ie Golden-Kiwifruit is absolutely yummy . I guess thats why the golden icecream was so different . I think you need to try some ripe Golden Kiwifruit again, and hopefully you will see how fantastic they are .
Whoa! that's expensive to this Kiwi. I can travel to a nearby town [Matamata, the place of the Hobbits] and buy a huge ice cream from one of the local gas stations for two dollars. Worth stopping even though I don't buy gas [electric car]
Can't get enough of your videos
My heart is going to break a little when you leave New Zealand 😢
I work at the Duck Island kitchen, glad you like it. The buttery flavour from the Fairy Bread is the toasted Brioche that’s been infused in the ice cream. Next time grab the toasted marshmallow ❤
Why do you add so much salt to your ice creams flavours?
leeeoooonn! haha watched this and immediately thought of u
We do love our ice cream, Kapiti anything is the best, but good ol Tip Top Hokey Pokey or Jellytip are the bomb
jellytip sucks now they changed the jelly
Try the 2 litre tub variety, so in love 😚 💕
Duck island have a amazing way of making their ice cream actually taste like what they replicate.
Glen and Mado, ate their way around New Zealand pies and ice cream, cookies and cream all the way
Try New Zealand coffee shops. Especially in Wellington where we have the more cafes per Capita than anywhere in the world
Gotta try Hokey Pokey, probably the most popular one here, a definite favourite 😍

Nah. Goody goody gumdrops, hokey pokey, gold rush, rainbow, orange chip (jaffa). And jelly tip.

Duck island is the goods. Fejoa ice cream from them is the goods when they are in season. They are always trying new flavors
Nothing more kiwi than hokey pokey ice cream chocolate dipped, on a cone… wash it down with a bottle of L & P.
..? Wash it down with l and p? That sounds terrible, whenever i eat desert and fizzy its terrible for my throat
shit take
Il wash it down with a ice chocolate ❤
i used to like goody gum drops.
That’s the stupidest shit ever. Nz ice cream doesn’t need to be washed down with anything. Thats a total disgrace
I admire your commitment to testing and tasting NZ food. Hope you are enjoying your time here.
Didn't know we ate that much ice cream! Passionfruit, followed by rum and raisin would be my top picks.
Yesss, rum and raisin

White chocolate and roasted miso is my favourite from Duck Island. Sounds bizarre, but the sweet/savory combination is fantastic.
Like the sound of that
I was mentally shrieking to get the toasted marshmallow from Duck Island. It's got a really interesting texture that I love.

Yes Gelato.
They have 2 outlets (oddly close together) on the waterfront either side if Frank Kitts park as well.
Also available in smaller centres ( not dedicated shops though) e.g
Levin New World.
Some of their flavours are sorbet and some are icecream. They have a shop in Courtney Place too.
