I do not believe a “ no skip album “ equals a classic. I think impact and time are the biggest factors that play a part into being a classic album. I can name albums that can be considered hard to hear but are classics because they are still talked about til this day. Hip Hop or not.

Get Rich Or Die Tryin' for example. Had like 4 or 5 skips but is undeniably a classic.

The last time asked this question I said TPAB to give it its flowers because I’ve never seen an album executed like that. Honestly it’s a hard question to answer there’s been great albums since then but CLASSSIC 🤔 very tough. Ppl say Igor but what other ppl have been impacted by that album sound wise? In fact I would say that album was impacted by The Love Below , Pharrell’s early work etc. I’m gonna really try to think about.

I feel like many people can agree that RODEO by Travis Scott is a classic. It Was released in 2015 and till this day it’s still one of the most creative albums since then and sounded like a trap album with so much art in it. The quality and production is a lot better than most of the trap music we’ve been listening to in the recent years. Also it’s a short album that’s flows from beginning to end.
Also the guy talking about “time” not playing a factor or a huge factor on what determines something to be a classic doesn’t understand that some songs or albums don’t sound the same after 5, 10 or even 20 years. They’re not as good as they were before and they don’t hit the same way as they used to when you first heard them. For instance graduation by Kanye west came out in 2007 and millions of people can play that album today (14 years) later and it’ll still hit the same and get you in a good mood or give you a nostalgia feeling.

That’s a great mixtape probably my favorite Travis Scott project but I wouldn’t put it over Astroworld only because the impact Astroworld had and the numbers Astroworld did, the rollout Travis did for Astroworld, the tour, the merch, and just the moment itself and anticipation for Astroworld was by far the most hyped up album and will never be forgettable. Tupac's Me Against the World, Jay Z's Reasonable Doubt, Kendrick Lamar's TPAB, Kanye West's Graduation, are just a few examples of undeniable classic albums. I would say Yeezus is the main origin point of fashion popularity. He wasn’t able to completely focus on fashion when he was finishing Dark Fantasy because it had to be perfect, he said numerous times he felt his career was dependent on its success. Once that happened he was able to switch to fashion in Paris hence the hotel studio sesh’s that spawned Yeezus and his fashion line.

Should be 7-10 years. 2018 is way too early to tell. Lyrics can age poorly, instrumentals can end up sounding overly-dated or it just doesn’t have any influence. For example, there are albums from the 2000s people were considering to be classics, but they aged more than horribly because the bling era sounds like such shit most of the time. And there were albums from the 2000s and bling era that were classic but only because we can still enjoy them now like 15 years later. I see Astroworld as becoming a classic but again many things on there could age poorly. Just depends on where rap goes musically

For me ‘classic’ is one of the most overused terms and becomes diminished as a signifier of quality for a piece of work. People use the term as a marker of excellence in terms of how an album has affected them and is attributed to their ideal listening experience. For me personally I believe there needs to be a few aspects of what can be regarded as a classic but certainly an album needs to be monitored over a period of time to see how it has stood amongst its contemporaries

I’m pretty late here but I just found the channel relatively recently, and I wanted to contribute my own thoughts on this topic. In my opinion, even 5 years is too soon for a classic. This was kind of touched on, but it needs to withstand the test of time. What did it do for/to the genre over time? In what context are we talking about/listening to it in over the years? Have people had time to build a solidified opinion? Are we able to see what the album meant to an artist’s career/discography? What did it mean for the culture? What did it mean in the context of the social or political landscape when it was made? And then of course after X number of years, is the album still put in rotation? Those are just some of the questions you have to ask yourself when considering a classic.
The classic label is thrown around too much lately, even a no skip album doesn’t automatically label it a classic. IMO there are only a handful of trap albums that truly belong in the classic discussion (TM101, Trap Muzik, DS2, Finally Rich). I was born in the mid 90s and have noticed the younger generations seem to throw around “classic” too much, and I feel like it’s because they haven’t really seen how the culture and music evolved to become what it is today, and what albums contributed to the evolution of the genre. I totally understand it, there have been some great albums released over the last decade but classics are few and far between. In my opinion, TPAB is the most recent classic (DS2 can be argued).

And by fresh i do not only mean great production, but the fact that even if it's a really solid hip hop album, you can still play most of its songs in the car, at the beach, in a bar and it wouldn't absolutely feel out of place.

A proper classic often needs multiple listens in order to truly understand it's brilliance. Sometimes they dont even sound right the first couple times. Thats why the modern throwaway rap is always bumped harder than the classics but is then forgotten later.
It would be interesting to listen to the radio in the late 60's and see what kind of music was dominating the airwaves, when at the same time Rock was hitting it's peak form.

imo a classic album is a album that is timeless, iconic, and impactful. I am really strict with what i call a classic but these are albums from the 2010s i think are classics, To pimp a butterfly, Blond, The Money Store, and Minecraft soundtrack volume alpha. Blond and TPAB are certified classics no debate and The Money Store and Minecraft Volume alpha are a bit more unpopular picks but they imo are 100% a classic but i can totally see albums like Plastic Beach Take Care Good kid, maad city and my beautiful dark twisted fantasy being a part of this list. If i had to predict a album that is going to be a classic in the future really hot take but the one with the best chance of being a classic in the future is whole lotta red.

Great discussion but I feel luka’s criteria for a classic was too restrictive. An album that falls out of favor from years 3-5 years can do the same in years 5-7, 7-9 and so on. I can’t see any reason why 5 is the magic number for an album. Personally I would say an album has to be around long enough for most artists to be able to drop their own albums and show its influence. So however long that takes is the time length in my opinion but I’m not going to grapple over the numbers if someone thinks a relatively recent album is a classic.

My answer has to be We Got It From Here... Thank You 4 Your Service by A Tribe Called Quest. It’s an awesome send-off to one of the greatest groups in hip-hop history, especially with it coming out not long after Phife Dawg’s death. Q-Tip’s production is on point, and basically what you’d expect a modern version of The Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders to sound like, which is fitting since the album is essentially the old guard coming back to pass the torch to a new generation. It’s really cool to hear ATCQ collaborate with new greats like Kendrick and Anderson .Paak, and of course if you’re a rap fan, you’ll understand the importance of hearing them team up with André 3000 and Kanye, who were both heavily inspired by Tribe, as well as Busta Rhymes who’s been a frequent collaborator for decades. One of my favorite albums. I could write about it all day lol. For me, it’s easily a classic even if it hasn’t been 5 years yet

Two he just made his worst/interesting album with Jesus is king and I need to see if he’s gonna take that sound and keep going with it. And lastly he’s one of the most successful/rich rappers of all time at this moment and he’s at peak with so much baggage that it crazy not to think this new album won’t be at least interesting.
