Be - Common Fantastic album that only grows on you overtime. Less hits than Late Registration, but so much soul and character that it will NEVER leave my rotation. Chi-City gives me goosebumps to this day, it balances between being small scale and grand at the same time. Need another Ye and Common project!
The subject matters revolve around love, lust, growing as a person and looking forward to the future. I think about those kids at the end track and how they were announcing what they wanted to become in life and it never fails to make me shed a tear and think back then that maybe that was me as a kid, just hoping I could be somebody.

There was some Dre production, but yeah it was largely produced by Eminem unlike his previous two albums (tho he did a bit of production on those projects as well)
personally found Below the Heavens around 2009 as i was graduating High School trying to figure out who I was. The themes of struggle in rthe process of building your own dream resonated heavily in a way that few albums have ever hit. Not to mention Exile just crushing the production. Really really happy to see that album on this list with such heavy hitters as it's always in my top 10 when talking albums.
I just re-listened to Madvillainy today and I gotta say, what an absolute masterpiece. From the rapping, to the production, to even the structure of it with all the short songs..It's tied with mm food for my favorite DOOM album. Also, Supervillain theme is one of the greatest beats I've ever heard and only lasts 50 seconds, what a shame.

Man really glad common is getting some love here. I started slobbin on the common knob in the end of high school and when I listened to like water for chocolate and Be I was blown away for the first time at how tight the production was and how great of a lyricist common is. Nahh as if you were both born in 2000, man, I feel old af! I was born when Big was topping the charts with Juicy in ‘94. Tbf though, I do find myself agreeing to most things on this channel so them 6 years can't make much of a difference when it comes to hip hop preference! Great job as always lads, NFR is easily one of the best music podcasts on TH-cam.
Haha 6 years old blasting out the slim shady lp? 😂 I was around 7-8 when I used to borrow my sisters copy of the eminem show and blast it out on my CD Walkman 🤣🤣
For me 2003 goes to Revolutionary Vol. 2 by immortal technique. IMO has all-time best set of political tracks, best posse-cut, goes extremely hard against the hip-hop industry, perfect interludes with Mumia, and 'You Never Know' is to me the second best storytelling hiphop song...take a wild guess at what passes it. It is also an extremely uniquely placed sound with all the connection to south america where Tech is from, along with the New York underground sound
@@OMAR-vk9pi Disagree. If that was the case then pretty much anything underground could be dismissed even if it's way better then mainstream albums. I think when talking about the best album of a year artistic merit should be the main thing.
3030 is without question, for me, the greatest album of 2000 and a top 10 of the 2000s decade. It’s sound with Del the Funky Homosapien on the mic with incredible flows with that futuristic production, it’s truly a hidden gem.

I feel like it’s college rap. Logic, Mac Miller, j coke music that I can’t listen to in my 30s. I can listen to mobb deep, nas, Mac Dre and they have more of a less teenage angst feel.

Valid list but 2007 is Graduation by far That album is the one that it’s being playing the most from that era (17 YEARS LATER) and millions of people still listen daily on Spotify Graduation changed the sound of hip hop and music in general (the mix of Pop, Electro and Rap)
Deltron 3030 is outstanding. That whole run from Dan the Automator with Del3030, Gorillaz' first, and So...How's Your Girl? in like an 18 month span is so underrated.
I really enjoyed this convo!! Interesting hearing all of your perspectives and solid choices. Have either of you heard the album The Minstrel Show but the group Little Brother? It came out in 2005 and I think you guys would really fuck with it. Flawless album and it made noise when it came out. It’s considered a classic the same way Below the Heavens is a classic
2001 was actually a phenomenal year for underground hiphop. Aesop Rock, J-Live, Cormega, Masta Ace, Cunninlynguists, Immortal Technique, J Dilla, The Coup, De La Soul ALL dropped classic albums that year. All of which body The Blueprint.
@@thijnhogendoorn6598 Nah cuh The Realness, Disposable Arts & The Best Part are definitely better than the blueprint. And don’t get me wrong I fuck with the Blueprint. I just find myself listening to these other projects more
You guys bringing up Devils Night -D12 earned you guys a follow. That album is very slept on. Even the tracks without Em are solid. It's definitely not a top album for the year, but it deserved a mention.
Im really glad they talked bout clipse and hell hath no fury! Love the entire album, front to back. Ik this may be a biased ass take, but its def a top10 of all time hip hop album for me
Knowing that u both guys were born in the year 2000 just like me is so depressing, I live in Syria and I haven't done anything meaningful in my life till this moment, ur the same age as me and u got a solid fan base, keep the hard work love ur stuff

Well done! Loved that segment, it helped me verify with my discography and agree with picks most of the time but feel there were a few misses in honorable mention, especially from the Dirty South: - 2003: o Outkast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below o Three 6 Mafia -The Unbreakables - 2004 : o G-Unit - Beg for Mercy (underrated) o Young Buck - Straight Outta Cashville - 2005: o Three 6 Mafia - Most Known Unknown o Slim Thug - Already Platinium (underrated album with some of the best Neptunes production) - 2006 : o Snoop Dogg - Tha Blue Carpet Treatment o T.I. - KING (far superior and aged so much better than Paper Trail that you mentioned for 2008) - 2007: o Jay-Z - American Gangster: so underrated and has aged so well (actually did not fully appreciate it upon release) o Lupe Fiasco - The Cool (for me superior to Food & Liquor) o Common - Finding Forever - 2008: o Q-Tip - The Renaissance (can’t actually decide between this one TCIII & 808’s for my favorite album of that year)
My list 2000: Stankonia 2001: The Cold Vein 2002: From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots 2003: Vaudeville Villain 2004: Madvillainy 2005: Arular 2006: Donuts 2007: Below the Heavens 2008: 808s & Heartbreak 2009: Man on the Moon: The End of Day Some of these years were pretty tough.
2007 is EASILY Lupe Fiasco The Cool, do people even know about the concept of the album and the whole story of The Game, The Streets and The Cool? For me it is the best ALBUM OF ALL TIME, best concept and it isn't even close to me. This is one of the most underrated albums and people really should take their time figuring it out, it is an absolute masterpiece.
Below the heavens is really close, but the cool is genuinely one of the best albums of all time. Crazy that people aren’t mentioning it, it’s better than food and liquor. It’s my second favorite album of all time, behind Drogas Wave also by Lupe
can't believe "in my mind" by pharell wasn't mentioned! definitely one of the best albums of 06 and one of the most influential of that decade and to this day
Applauded hard at the 05 selection, it was between Be and Late Registration for me too bc they are two of my favorite hip hop albums of all time but Late Registration is just one of my favorite albums of all time period, so yeah. Good looks there
I’m not gonna lie I really thought you guys would say College Dropout over Madvillainy, thats a tough one but i’m glad yall put Madvillainy over it. Its a top 10 hip-hop album for me.
I will leave a long comment since the 2000's is one of my favourite decades of hip-hop. I have chosen 3 albums per year. Some are obvious choices but I would like like to draw some attention on less known albums that are amazing IMO. 2000 🥇 Marshall Mathers LP absolutely flawless. 🥈Train Of Thought by Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek collaborative work) The album has a positive vibe from beginning to end and the lyrics are so beautiful. I highly recommend this one if you love rap. 🥉 Like Water For Chocolate by Common. A musical masterpiece. I love how organic it is. 2001 🥇 The Blueprint by Jay-Z The production is on point and Jay-Z is on top form throughout the project. 🥈 The Realness by Cormega This album was one of the first rap albums that I discovered on the internet around '05 or '06. I didn't know who Cormega was at that time, but in some rap forums and magazines his name appeared several times and I downloaded this album. The lyrics are brilliant, the rhymes are on point and the album has a reflective aura that makes you think about what's important in life, it was one of those albums that really made an impression on me. 🥉 The Best Part by J-Live Super underrated, in my mind is a hidden gem of rap. Great rhymes and beautiful flow. One of the great underground records of all time. 2002 🥇 The Eminem Show This was the first CD I ever bought. Eminem abandoned his Slim Shady alter ego and gave us a more adult and mature version of himself. 🥈 The Lost Tapes by Nas The beats here are quite different to the rest of Nas' discography. The rhyme schemes are incredible and Nas displays all his rapping skills on this album. 🥉 The Future Is Now by Non Phixion Another underground gem from the early 2000's I thought they were black for a long time, lol. Hardcore rap, amazing record. 2003 🥇 Get Rich Or Die Tryin' This one is full of hits, I can listen to this record several times in a row and I wouldn't get bored. 🥈The Listening by Little Brother 9th wonder's production here is impeccable and the rappers' style fit into the beats perfectly. Fresh, creative, and inspiring. 🥉Shadows In The Sun by Brother Ali This one grew on me over the years. At first I enjoyed a couple of songs but after some time and with more knowledge of hip-hop culture it really blew me away. The rhyme patterns are incredible and the lyricism is remarkable. 2004 🥇Madvillainy by Madvillain MF DOOM's weird style matches amazingly well with Madlib's unconventional beats. Two rare artists produced one of the best hip hop albums of all time. Pure rhymes, pure beats, bars everywhere, not a single chorus on the entire project, no bulls***. 🥈 A Long Hot Summer by Masta Ace English is not my first language and I gotta say that Ace's diction and pronunciation is crystal-clear. I could understand every single word that this dude says at the first listening. The storytelling here is insane. Every rhyme is vivid. Underrated MC 🥉 3:16 by Murs It amazes me how many underground records from the early 2000's are really great. 9th wonder produced this one. Murs delivers clever rhymes and superb wordplay while describing the trials and tribulations that young men must face in this life. If you are a working class man or have been through some really difficult times, you can totally identify with many of the issues that Murs rap about on this record. 2005 🥇Modal Soul by Nujabes This japanese artist really reach my mind, my heart, my soul, everything with his beats. I put this at this position because it's maybe Nujabes' best album. I don't know how his music could be so melancholic and yet so joyful at the same time. Some artist really gave us jewels that make our life better and Nujabes is definitely one of them. 🥈 Be by Common The guys of the podcast already said it the album is so beautiful and so positive, it really stands out just by its vibe. One of Commons' masterpieces. 🥉 Monkey Barz by Sean Price Sean Price is the complete opposite of Common. He is one of the rawest rappers I've ever heard. The guy doesn't gave a fu** about what people might think. He seemed to be true to himself and genuinely authentic. This album might not be his best album but is so raw and the rhymes are so heartfelt that it deserves some praising. R.I.P Sean P! 2006 🥇A Piece Of Strange by Cunninlynguists This album is kind of unique on its own the beats are low paced for the most part and some of them have a calmness that is rare to find in other rap albums. The lyrics are outstanding as well. 🥈 Servants In Heaven, Kings In Hell by Jedi Mind Tricks The album's title was what caught my attention and it didn't disappoint me. Vinnie Paz is amazing on the mic and his delivery is outstanding, the lyrics are truthful, direct and outspoken. 🥉Food & Liquor by Lupe Fiasco I really appreciate this album because I think it brought back consciousness and clever rhymes to mainstream hip-hop after some time. Quality content. This is my perspective as a person who is from outside of the US, and English is not my native language. I really love Hip-hop, I learned a lot of what I know of English through rap, it is my favourite genre and my life wouldn't have been the same without it. If I have time I will put my favourite albums from the last part of the decade. Greetings from Argentina! 🇦🇷
great lists......i notice it took a lot of effort......glad to see the love for the first reflection eternal , Cormega , Murs316 ......i prefer the minstrel show by LIttle Brother to the listening.....maybe its just that i got that album first idk.......but Commons Be is a great choice as evven the guys in the video said....thanks

@@alfiewebb2627 it has a few great songs (which just lose it is not, it's decent at best and bad at worst) but like 50% of the album is absolutely awful: evil deeds, puke, rain man, big weenie, ass like that, spend some time. Mosh and crazy in love are also bad but i don't mind them as much, the songs you mentioned minus just lose it plus yellow brick road and curtains down are the only good songs on the album. For 06 it would definitely have to be donuts. In my opinion Donuts is maybe the best hip hop album ever made. Dilla’s ear for sampling is something that nobody else has or ever will have. Even producers like Madlib or even Kanye, while it is phenomenon. They don't have the one of a kind way to flip a sample in a way that both completely changes the entirety of the feel of the song being sampled, but even changing the meaning of the music in the sample to reflect the tragic state Dilla was in at the time. But also mad respect for picking Blu & Exile. More people need to check that masterpiece out.

I think about those kids at the end track and how they were announcing what they wanted to become in life and it never fails to make me shed a tear and think back then that maybe that was me as a kid, just hoping I could be somebody.

personally found Below the Heavens around 2009 as i was graduating High School trying to figure out who I was.

I love the album too but commercial success has to be important on lists like this

It’s my second favorite album of all time, behind Drogas Wave also by Lupe
can't believe "in my mind" by pharell wasn't mentioned! definitely one of the best albums of 06 and one of the most influential of that decade and to this day
Dr. Dre barely produced on The Marshall Mather LP and The Eminem Show, it was mostly the Bass Brothers or Eminem himself
Man on the Moon and Relapse are both phenomenal albums and tied for 2009 imo.
Applauded hard at the 05 selection, it was between Be and Late Registration for me too bc they are two of my favorite hip hop albums of all time but Late Registration is just one of my favorite albums of all time period, so yeah. Good looks there
Eminem produced majority of the Eminem on his own. Which makes it even more impressive 👑
2001 🥇 The Blueprint by Jay-Z
The production is on point and Jay-Z is on top form throughout the project.
🥈 The Realness by Cormega
This album was one of the first rap albums that I discovered on the internet around '05 or '06. I didn't know who Cormega was at that time, but in some rap forums and magazines his name appeared several times and I downloaded this album. The lyrics are brilliant, the rhymes are on point and the album has a reflective aura that makes you think about what's important in life, it was one of those albums that really made an impression on me.
🥉 The Best Part by J-Live
Super underrated, in my mind is a hidden gem of rap. Great rhymes and beautiful flow. One of the great underground records of all time.
2002 🥇 The Eminem Show
This was the first CD I ever bought. Eminem abandoned his Slim Shady alter ego and gave us a more adult and mature version of himself.
🥈 The Lost Tapes by Nas
The beats here are quite different to the rest of Nas' discography. The rhyme schemes are incredible and Nas displays all his rapping skills on this album.
🥉 The Future Is Now by Non Phixion
Another underground gem from the early 2000's I thought they were black for a long time, lol. Hardcore rap, amazing record.
2003 🥇 Get Rich Or Die Tryin'
This one is full of hits, I can listen to this record several times in a row and I wouldn't get bored.
🥈The Listening by Little Brother
9th wonder's production here is impeccable and the rappers' style fit into the beats perfectly. Fresh, creative, and inspiring.
🥉Shadows In The Sun by Brother Ali
This one grew on me over the years. At first I enjoyed a couple of songs but after some time and with more knowledge of hip-hop culture it really blew me away. The rhyme patterns are incredible and the lyricism is remarkable.
2004 🥇Madvillainy by Madvillain
MF DOOM's weird style matches amazingly well with Madlib's unconventional beats. Two rare artists produced one of the best hip hop albums of all time. Pure rhymes, pure beats, bars everywhere, not a single chorus on the entire project, no bulls***.
🥈 A Long Hot Summer by Masta Ace
English is not my first language and I gotta say that Ace's diction and pronunciation is crystal-clear. I could understand every single word that this dude says at the first listening. The storytelling here is insane. Every rhyme is vivid. Underrated MC
🥉 3:16 by Murs
It amazes me how many underground records from the early 2000's are really great. 9th wonder produced this one. Murs delivers clever rhymes and superb wordplay while describing the trials and tribulations that young men must face in this life. If you are a working class man or have been through some really difficult times, you can totally identify with many of the issues that Murs rap about on this record.
2005 🥇Modal Soul by Nujabes
This japanese artist really reach my mind, my heart, my soul, everything with his beats. I put this at this position because it's maybe Nujabes' best album. I don't know how his music could be so melancholic and yet so joyful at the same time. Some artist really gave us jewels that make our life better and Nujabes is definitely one of them.
🥈 Be by Common
The guys of the podcast already said it the album is so beautiful and so positive, it really stands out just by its vibe. One of Commons' masterpieces.
🥉 Monkey Barz by Sean Price
Sean Price is the complete opposite of Common.
2006 🥇A Piece Of Strange by Cunninlynguists
This album is kind of unique on its own the beats are low paced for the most part and some of them have a calmness that is rare to find in other rap albums. The lyrics are outstanding as well.
🥈 Servants In Heaven, Kings In Hell by Jedi Mind Tricks
The album's title was what caught my attention and it didn't disappoint me. Vinnie Paz is amazing on the mic and his delivery is outstanding, the lyrics are truthful, direct and outspoken.
🥉Food & Liquor by Lupe Fiasco
I really appreciate this album because I think it brought back consciousness and clever rhymes to mainstream hip-hop after some time.
