The irony is that this Prius is faster than the average car in Europe...I'm from The Netherlands, west-europe and the majority of people have a car that is either SLOWER than a regular Prius or at best just as fast. People tend to always buy the most base-model a car has to offer. People drive lots of Volkswagen cars. The most popular from the past 3-4 years is the Volkswagen Polo (75-90HP), followed by the Golf (90-110HP). Another popular car is the Opel Corsa (90HP). The average BMW 1/2-series comes with 100-110HP. But the BMW's are a lot more expensive than a Prius. Now think about it, the Prius taking the lead from a red traffic light, ha! Welcome to Europe ;)
I think that is output for just the engine. It uses the 2ZR-FXE which is good for 98 hp and 142 Nm torque (105 lb-ft). The two motors in the drive system (MG1 and MG2) are capable of 23kW and 40Nm and 53kW and 163 Nm. But of course, these can be blended to any amount with the planetary drive system. The prime can generate about 68 kW (91hp) when running just the motors. Still pretty torque-lite of course! but perhaps not as straightforward as the spec sheet might suggest.
As was already mentioned, there is a fair amount of torque provided my MG2 (which isn't shown in the spec sheets for some reason). I drove a Prius for 7 years and in rain/snow, the wheels would easily break free if the traction control was disabled. And torque from MG2 is available at 0 RPM.

I don't care for the chrome on the front dash because of glare. The screen is hard to see with glare. Toyota should have a way of keeping track of ICE miles so that oil change interval would make more sense. We find it to be way more quiet and physically more comfortable than our other Prius which is a 2010. One thing I really wish for would be a 100 mile EV only range. 25 is not enough. If it had 100 miles then Toyota would own the EV market.
Totally agree on extending the EV range. Not everyone has a short commute to work. With a longer EV range everyone that has a long commute in a cold climate would buy one where regular EVs just don't have the range.
The problem with the Hyundai plug-in hybrids is: They depend on the gas engine for all heating. It also shows your lowered electric mileage when you're running your A/C. It's super handy) 2.

7:45 "B" Mode for extended regen while lifting the gas works only when in pure EV mode. If used in HV or CHG mode it just keeps the combustion engine in for breaking
In either HV or EV mode, with your foot off the throttle, no fuel is going to the engine. It's just working as an air pump. Also, you can get the same amount of regen just using the brake pedal
@@tomaszrychlewski8454 sorry but it has nothing to do with engine braking, that only happens in heavy duty diesel trucks, it is for a more strong regen. braking, this transmision has 2 electric motors, when is in D when you let off the accelarator pedal only uses the main motor for the regn brake, but when you put it in B it uses both motors for the regen braking encreasing the braking force to slow down the vehicule
@@schoonerthedog the name "engine braking" itself is telling you that is not engine braking, because as the name tells you engine braking is when the engine itself is used to brake the tires, and this is not the case, is the magnetic field created it in the electric motors that force the wheels ti stop rotating, it's not simple to explain.
Brand new Prius Prime owner here after having watched your previous video two dozen times! I prefer this guy to the Ioniq: I figured a Toyota would take a beating for the next 10 years whilst being economical and environmental. It feels roomier up front than the Ioniq and has slightly less cabin noise on the highway. It also never needs to run the engine in the winter (driving as an EV), whereas the Ioniq idles the engine for heat despite having a full charge.
I’ve been driving my Prius 2008 for 4 years and the only thing I’ve had a problem with my car is the minimal keep up like oil change or tire inflating. Honestly one of the most reliable cars I know.
the look at 6:32 priceless! Great little car, we opted for a C-MAX plugin because my oldest would bang his head on the rear door frame every time he gets in.
I know you guys did a road trip with the Ioniq, I think you guys should do a more in depth review like this one the refreshed 2020! Thanks, stay safe, and keep up the good work!
It is amazing how much your youtube channel has grown, it makes me smile. It has also inspired me to start my own channel any support would help but well done straight pipes im really proud of you guys.
I think the big problem with the Hyundia Ionic in Canada is that if you want to use the heater you need to run the engine (plug in version). This is where the Prime has the advantage, as it can run the heater with battery power alone, which means all year long you can run all electric for commuting, vs half the year with the Ionic.
I have had my Prius for 16 years with over 275,000 miles. Best car for driving in L.A. traffic 50 miles a day. Want to up the efficiency but not go full EV so I waited for the Prius Prime and was disappointed with numerous things so I was leaning heavily to the 2nd gen Ioniq PHEV until I saw and read about the Toyota RAV4 Prime. The RAV4 Prime will be my next car. It checks all the boxes. Supposed to come out this Summer in the USA. Look forward to you guys test driving it. Thanks.
Have a 2017 Prime plus.... I work within its electric range....and have several charging stations at work.....have not used gas in the last 5 months......and i never have to worry about running out of battery charge and being left stranded.....best car I've ever owed.
The 2013 Prius is a total lighting failure go back to H4 60/100 watt bulbs and also give a wider view to the drivers side when turning a corner as today the cities like to use candle stick dim quality lighting as some women wanted more romantic driving and crashing conditions as you cannot see the 8" high curbs that don't even have reflector paint in Plano ,Texas Plano Parkway west bound and on Jupiter turning south in the rain or dark of night.
Unpopular opinion, I use Apple Maps because I like that it tells me the best lane to be in in order to get to my destination efficiently and it also factors the speed limit into eta and it shows stop signs and stop lights on the map and says at the next light rather than in 100 feet. More convenient for me personally in carplay
I bought a 2020 Prius Prime Limited and I love it. For the haters this is my third Prius--- I had a Lexus SC400 as my midlifecrisismobile but as an adult I don't need a sports car for a daily driver; ymmv. Anyway, just a couple notes: I really hate the lack of Android Auto as well, but that's my sole gripe. I considered the Hyundai Ioniq but found it too drab to get excited about, and the Honda Clarity has longer EV range but inferior gas mode mileage. For my needs I basically won't use gas in my Prime unless I leave town which would have been true of any plug-in hybrid I could have bought. Oh, and that constant reverse beep is the worst! The dealer can change it to a single beep--- if they give you any runaround (my awful dealership did) it's in the owner's manual under dealer-adjustable options.
Alright flame suit on: I actually liked my Gen 4 Prius, my biggest regret was not getting a Prius Prime because that tiny 1-2mi EV range of the regular hybrid sucks lol. The Prius is the perfect appliance for an efficient reliable commuter, and Toyota's target with these are not car enthusiasts. With that being said, the TNGA platform is actually pretty well sorted! My Prius took corners flatter than some of the econo-cars I've driven in same price area/size. Like I didn't expect somewhat competent handling in a Prius of all cars!. Also, despite it handling pretty decent it IS slow as shit lol. I ended up paying it off and giving it to my brother who needed a newer car and just wants a reliable A-B car. I actually ended up buying a Mk7.5 GTI thanks to the Straight Pipes! I didn't know they had refreshed the GTI until I saw their video. Yuri, sadly, the current standard Prius also got a slight refresh! It doesn't have that long "Z" looking taillight anymore.
This is from personal experience. DO NOT USE "B" UNLESS YOU ARE ON A LONG MOUNTAIN DOWN HILL GRADE. It is not intended to be used to charge the battery. It is aengine compression brake like a JAKE BRAKE on an 18 wheeler. If you over use "B" it will cause excessive carbon build up in your exhaust system which will cause damage over time with excessive use. The reason the "B" exist is because the breaking system in the Prius is under powered because it is subsidized by the kinetic breaking system. Excessive long grades can overheat the under powered brakes on the Prius and this is the only time you should use "B".
I have a 2018 Upgrade Technology Package, and LOVE IT. The only complaint is the infortainment because the 2018 doesn’t have Apple CarPlay. But except that, I just love it. In summer, I can go as much as 52km, which is way more than announced by the dealer!
Hey thanks for the video guys, I think these are amazing cars, currently have a 2012 Chevy Volt and most likely I’m going to upgrade to this, it’s one of the most reliable cars as rated by JD power and consumer reports as well as US news and I’m sure it’ll last a long time plus I’ve heard people get around 60 miles per gallon. The piano black is a drag but I’m a clean freak so it’ll be cleaned daily LOL. The color is awesome but I would have to go with one the lighter color interiors, black gets old sometimes and very dark especially when you tint the windows.
I first learned about the Honda Clarity from you guys and ended up getting one. I don't see much that's better about this except a nicer info screen and a bigger gas tank. Clarity has more electric range and you get the full tax credit.
Charge mode charges the Traction battery pack up to 80% and charges while driving or sitting at a light. B mode is to be used for steep grade downhill runs to ease use of physical brakes, don’t use it all the time. Eco mode places emphasis on slower pedal response and dials back the heat pump to be more efficient.
Reverse beep is customizable at dealer. I have mine to beep only once. There are a litany of other changes that can be made too. For instance auto window open from remote fob. Disable those horrible rain sense wipers to function like normal intermittent. Ask your dealer for a list of custom settings they can alter.
The back up beeping can be turned off using a ODBII adapter and an app on your phone. However it will still beep only once, which is not as annoying. I've also modified mine where the lane change blinkers blink 4 times instead of the standard 3.
8:34 i definetly mind CVT's in slow cars. They make them feel even more slow and boring. I think all cars with less than 150hp should at least have to option of a manual transmission because that allows you to have a little bit of fun and get the most out of the little power you do have.
Glad you guys are back to the older ways of videos. Which means the Quarantine is over in Canada yey! As for the car I plan to buy a Prius as my next car. For the price they are amazing and useful. (:
In the older Priuses there was a way to disable it pretty easily. I think in the 4th gen you either have to take it to the dealer or as the other person mentioned use carista or some other scan tool. I have no idea why they put these in the cars. But they've been doing it since 1997 and they still do it. I imagine the reason is that the car is silent a lot of the time especially at slow speeds. And it is theoretically possible that you could pull into a parking space put it in reverse forget that you did so open the door and start to get out and the car could run over you. But honestly what they need to do is just have it beep two or three times in a row and then shut the hell up.
@@kens97sto171 I drive an Hybrid myself and it too makes the beeping-noise when in reverse. I understand why. The car is silent. So silent that it's easy to think that the car is off as it simply makes zero noise. There are too many scenarios in which it could go wrong if you'd had no annoying beeping sound. It prevented me a few times from giving gass while in reverse!
@@Samosayummyyay Yeah I turned the beeping off as soon as I could, on the second gen Priuses it's a pretty easy thing to do. There are videos on TH-cam showing you how to do it, it's of course reversible also. I never had a single situation where I didn't realize it was still in reverse. And I think the better solution would be for it to beep two or three times quickly in a row and then stop. I believe on the newer Priuses when you disable it that is exactly what they defer to is a single beep or several beeps in a row. You should keep in mind that I drive for a living 50k per year , and I drove an 18-wheeler for a hell of a long time. So I am perhaps a little more observant than your average casual driver. 15 years no tickets no accidents, probably 3 million miles.. If I can keep track of all the stuff I needed to remember to drive an 18-wheeler, remembering to put my Prius in park is not really an issue lol.. They're definitely awesome cars, a bit boring to drive. But super reliable, practical and comfortable. Pretty much the perfect car if you drive 50,000 mi a year. Hope you have a wonderful day and drive safe.
On Toyota Vehicles with Amazon Alexa capability you need to download the Toyota+Alexa app on your IPhone or Android mobile device. You also need to download the Toyota Entune 3.0 App Suite to enable the advanced Bluetooth connectivity. Make sure the phone is Bluetooth ON and connected. Make sure both APPs are installed and running. Run the setup and logins and BAM you have Amazon Alexa!
If they tune the steering and nail the rear wheel assistance, this could actually rival many sports sedans in terms of driving dynamics. I'm very interested in that tech.
@TheStraightPipes .... Not sure if it has already mentioned, but since i don't feel like reading all the comments, but the BACK UP BEEP can be changed to ONE BEEP, (to let you know at least that you put it in reverse!) Easy to do yourself, if you have an OBEII device or if you can ask your dealership to not charge you to do it, they'll do it for you. good luck.
My mom has a 2011 Sentra with 13,000km. When I visit back home I enjoy the pure CVT that hangs at redline forever until you let off. You can go a while before you’ll get a speeding ticket 😂
I feel like, with the Prime, they realised the MK4 was a bit of a duffer looks wise, so they restyled the front and back to make it a little easier on the eye. It does look better than the normal Prius.
I just checked Toyota's website and you can't even get one of these where I live, it won't even let me build one on the configurator. Damn Toyota - I was going to trade my MX5 for this!!! I'll just have to suffer and keep my gas guzzling Miata.
well if you live in europe its called prius plug in Sir ! It should be available anywhere , this is not a hydrogen toyota Mirai it is a Prius and you should check once moe i thinks it worth it
We purchased a Rav 4 SE and it has a spare tire goes realistically 42 miles on EV We have owned it for 3 months and we have consumed 1/4 a tank of gas after driving 2,500 miles. The EV range of 42 nikes takes care of 95% of our driving. If you road trip hybrid mod on the freeway will net you 38 miles per gallon
You can get it to display its total electric range. Press the Trip mode until you find it. Also you can get into settings and change the % to read in km/miles if you so desire. It is customizable.
Was able to turn off the reverse beeping by going into the OEM dialogistic and switching it off. Just get yourself a Bluetooth OBD2 Scanner and set it up to your smartphone with the proper app and your done. Only spent 20 bucks to switch off, well worth it.
I'm not sure the prime is worth the money if you drive a whole lot of miles. You lose significant cargo area over the regular Prius and You're paying a pretty significant premium over the standard Prius. The level two trim or L eco I think they call it now. Is the most efficient overall. And you can pick one up for 23 or 25,000. This car has some strong advantages, it's comfortable it's quiet it's efficient and it's reliable. But that's about it it's not a fun car it's not designed to be a fun car, it's designed to be practical and comfortable. Take one on a long trip sometime and you will definitely appreciate it. I've got a 2008 with 324,000 miles. My friend has an '06 with 380,000, And we have an acquaintance with an 04 with 520,000. They might be boring but if you need a practical daily driver. It's pretty hard to beat.
No gas and no gas tank? Good. Last time gas hit $5 a gallon, someone crawled under our pilot and drilled a hole in the tank. lost probably about $80 of gas, but the gas tank was almost $1300 to replace.
The big difference between the Ioniq phev and this one for Canadians is that the Prime has an electric heat pump.. on the Hyundai once you turn on the heating, the engine starts.
My 2010 Jeep Compass has a CVT in it and it doesn’t fake gear changes (unless you put it into ‘manual’ mode) and it is hilarious to floor it and just keep the engine pinned near redline.
@@ramielsayed7401 I enjoyed only putting gas in it 1-2 times per month, but it was a drag to drive. I thoroughly enjoy driving the Accord on a daily basis now!
Traded my 2020 Ioniq Limited for the 2021 Prius Prime Limited. For the reasons you buy these cars, the Prius is 100% better in ever way. Better mpg and ride & build quality. There's a reason why Hyundai is still a Hyundai.

Lmao my dad has a fit and the tires sure have rubber also it's kinda slow but it's fun to floor it unhill cause cause after like 1 second of have the pedal on the ground you can hear the v tec kick in I love the car and I hope he dont get rid of it anytime soon so I can do my drivers test in it
Thats what she said

Only 225? Well I guess since its 55, you're going more for comfort than handling lol.

B Mode is for engine breaking, not regen.
This is false, its engine braking
I think this Prius looks really really cool
Just imagine a set of rims and coilovers
Oh they have them in Japan. Try looking up the Toyota Prius PHV GR on Google.

I’ve been driving my Prius 2008 for 4 years and the only thing I’ve had a problem with my car is the minimal keep up like oil change or tire inflating. Honestly one of the most reliable cars I know.
It's feels like it's been so long since a driving video. Probably the reason why I'm hyped for a Prius review. 😂
the look at 6:32 priceless!

Try the Kia Niro PHEV, you will love it over the Prius Prime. It pretty much solves all the things you don’t like about the Prius.
last time i was this early was... literally 3 days ago bcuz quarantine.
I think the big problem with the Hyundia Ionic in Canada is that if you want to use the heater you need to run the engine (plug in version). This is where the Prime has the advantage, as it can run the heater with battery power alone, which means all year long you can run all electric for commuting, vs half the year with the Ionic.
A LTT/Straight Pipes collaboration video would be AMAZING.
2nd that, Review his Volt 2.0. Way better competitor to Prius Prime that was sadly discontinued.

3:17 Can't help it but these headlights make me think of a Bugatti Chiron.
The performance does too
The 2013 Prius is a total lighting failure go back to H4 60/100 watt bulbs and also give a wider view to the drivers side when turning a corner as today the cities like to use candle stick dim quality lighting as some women wanted more romantic driving and crashing conditions as you cannot see the 8" high curbs that don't even have reflector paint in Plano ,Texas Plano Parkway west bound and on Jupiter turning south in the rain or dark of night.
Bring back the V wagon w/awd....perfect.
My 2018 prime goes 55k on EV only in summer, 2.5 months between gas fill-up
5:44 You can display the pure electric range by selecting it with the "trip" button on the steering wheel, at least my european prius plugin does it.
The color is awesome but I would have to go with one the lighter color interiors, black gets old sometimes and very dark especially when you tint the windows.
my favorite care reviewers. Love to watch you guys. alot of fun to see you together
I first learned about the Honda Clarity from you guys and ended up getting one. I don't see much that's better about this except a nicer info screen and a bigger gas tank. Clarity has more electric range and you get the full tax credit.
There is also a thing called toyota Mirai ! if you'r interested !
Best prius built so far. Saves a lot of gas with plug in option.
@To the point. wait a year or 2 and get a used one.
Reverse beep is customizable at dealer. I have mine to beep only once. There are a litany of other changes that can be made too. For instance auto window open from remote fob. Disable those horrible rain sense wipers to function like normal intermittent. Ask your dealer for a list of custom settings they can alter.
We don't get cars from dealers. They are from manufacturers head office
In Canada, will the dealer disable the reverse beeping? Years ago in California, our dealers would disable the beeping in our Prius.
I asked them to disable mine when I bought one last month it only took like 5 minutes at the dealer.
I had mine changed to a single beep at the dealership. It took only a few minutes after I looked it up in the owner's manual for them.
Beeps because if running electric it will be quiet otherwise. Safety....
Hopefully only does it when electric...
nealewalter it only beeps inside, which is why everyone is annoyed by it
nodrogkam You can disable the beep yourself in a gen. 2 (2004-2009).
The back up beeping can be turned off using a ODBII adapter and an app on your phone. However it will still beep only once, which is not as annoying. I've also modified mine where the lane change blinkers blink 4 times instead of the standard 3.
Good review from the pre-apocalyptic era! I've almost have forgotten that two non-related people could actually be in the same car.
I've literally have owned this car for 2 Years and just now learned about the charge mode
8:34 i definetly mind CVT's in slow cars. They make them feel even more slow and boring. I think all cars with less than 150hp should at least have to option of a manual transmission because that allows you to have a little bit of fun and get the most out of the little power you do have.
CVCTs are the best choice when it comes to fuel economy nothing beats that
Hyundai/Kia set up DCTs in their Ioniq/Niro respectively. I love that transmission more than my Fusion Hybrid's CVT.
Hybrid system wont work with manual transmission, and hybrid regenerative system only work with e cvt config trans system
Glad you guys are back to the older ways of videos. Which means the Quarantine is over in Canada yey! As for the car I plan to buy a Prius as my next car. For the price they are amazing and useful. (:

William Brignardello you’re joking? Right?

and it never missed a beat
7:05. “Good lord. That thing in reverse sounds like a patient dying on an operating table.” LMAO😂
Carista app and it’s gone. One beep only 👍🏻
In the older Priuses there was a way to disable it pretty easily.
@@Samosayummyyay
Yeah I turned the beeping off as soon as I could, on the second gen Priuses it's a pretty easy thing to do.
You should hear it backing into a tight garage with the driver's door open.

Thanks Yuri and Jakub. I enjoyed your video. I'm waiting for the Prius Prime Sport AWD with a 50 kWH electric motor on the rear trans-axle.
If they tune the steering and nail the rear wheel assistance, this could actually rival many sports sedans in terms of driving dynamics. I'm very interested in that tech.
@TheStraightPipes .... Not sure if it has already mentioned, but since i don't feel like reading all the comments, but the BACK UP BEEP can be changed to ONE BEEP, (to let you know at least that you put it in reverse!) Easy to do yourself, if you have an OBEII device or if you can ask your dealership to not charge you to do it, they'll do it for you. good luck.
