    Excellent range test. My S-refresh is about one year older than this one and has 19” wheels for greater range. It has excellent range for road trips because I must stop for bathroom, food, and stretching every 2-3 hours. Stopping to “re-charge” our bodies seems much safer than all day behind the wheel.

  • @steinmar2
    @steinmar2 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    Yeah it would 400 mile range with the 19“ wheels and that’s where the sweet spot is because then it’s 90-10% 320miles go a little faster 300 mile-ish and combined with the nice charging curve of the NCA chemistry it’s an awesome car when a Steering WHEEL is equipped(:

    The rated range isn't a 70 mph number. But I agree more range is still needed. 400+ mile real world range is definitely needed.

    • @brandenflasch
      @brandenflasch  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      I’m well aware. It’s a reference point. Some vehicles exceed rated range at 70mph (many non-Teslas) and Teslas tend to be a decent bit below.

    100% on the real world range- before I bought mine I wanted to know how far it would go @80mph in 23°F weather. Because that’s actually what I do 😂

    Branden, You are on the right track with your thoughts at the end that "the car should serve your needs, not visa versa." When planning road trips, I always strive to line up the car's needs with my own. The result is very pleasant road trips, with stops when I need them and the car (almost) always charging when stopped.
    To do this, I adjust my start time so that the car will be at low SOC at lunch time, with a planed 10-15 min restroom stop at a supercharger on the way. I look for superchargers that have acceptable restaurant(s) for the lunch stop. For over 600 mi/day trips, I also plan a 30 min breakfast stop and a dinner stop. I use ABRP to do my planning, and now drive to destinations that I used to fly to when I had gas cars.

      While this is fine for people like you or I, normal / main stream buyers are far less likely to adapt to an EV in this way.

      @@brandenflasch You are right. This will be the case for some time. However new owners will adapt, and many will have never driven an ICE car. Many of the things we did as gas car drivers were unconscious adaptations to IC engine needs. In the future this will be the same for EV needs, IMO.
      A similar change occurred when railroads switched from steam locomotives to diesel-electric. Railroads that adapted their dispatch methods to better suit the diesels were more profitable than ones that dispatched them just like they were steam. Nowadays, no one dispatches locomotives as if they were steam powered.

    19" have a good bit more range. I've been very happy with my LR on them, road tripping is a breeze and significantly better than my 2018.

    I think what we need is a car with Lucid Air range and at the same time being able to use Tesla infrastructure. In that case, EV adoption would be very easy, no need to pre-plan anything, anyone can hop in and drive pretty much anywhere in US with no issues. This model S is great but would still require thinking ahead of a long trip.

      I've been on a road trip with this car. There's nothing to think about. Put in your destination and let the computer chart out a course and follow it. Actually the stops I had to make to charge did me some good. I'm never in a hurry on a road trip and this was for work. I'll get there when I get there, period. Most of my life I have had gas cars and been on long trips, but rarely in those trips did I actually drive the car and stop after it used the full tank of gas. I don't think that is actually common in the percentage of people that drive. Yet that seems to always be the argument. I understand that there are people that do but I find that I save more time not stopping for gas throughout the year than a long trip a couple times a year. To me the driving experience is what I enjoy more than any of it. I have a model 3 currently and in a couple days I am getting a Model S with the yoke. I look forward to it and understand the argument about the yoke also, but I think a lot of people fail to look at it from the perspective that the goal of the car is to get to a point that ultimately drives itself. Many of the same things we ridicule the Tesla for are not going to be used that often. It wasn't long ago that many didn't think we could survive with a computer that didn't have a DVD or floppy drive and here we are. Thank you for you video.

    We just returned from a 2K mile road trip in our 2022 MYP with 18" tires/wheels and we ended at 263 wh/mi vs 296 on the 21s on the same exact trip. So anything less is amazing efficiency. We are looking to trade up to a new LR S later this fall but with the 19s. I still may replace them with some 19s SQUARED with 255s from TSportLine. But we'll probably do one 2-k-mile road trip on the OEM 19s (not squared) before I make up my mind. But being 72-year-old even in our MYP we have to stop for BIO breaks well before the car needs a charge, we just want options to skip stops given Tesla is opening up the charging network and recent vandalism. But the S is a long-range monster.

    I enjoy my EV6 way more in almost every other way but it just can't compare with my old 2013 Altima on the highway. It could get 600+ miles at 70+MPH. Yea, it needed an 18 gallon tank to do it but it gave me the option to go 4-6 hours without stopping. I wonder if EVs will ever be able to reach that point?
    Having to stop every 2-3 hours to charge is what it looks like EV road trips will be like for the near future but that means there's really no good place to have DCFCs installed. People say they should be installed at restaurants but if you're driving the entire day, do you really want to be eating something every 2-3 hours?
