Hey Scotty, does a automatic transmission need to hold pressure in order to operate properly? Got a friend with a Honda Civic and her transmission dipstick tube is missing and when she's driving, it seems like the tranny is being held back if that makes sense. Im wondering if it's because the system is not pressurized properly?
Scotty gives the absolute best car repair advice on the internet! This guy has saved me thousands of dollars with his knowledgeable approach to analyzing and repairing cars! Many Thanks Scotty !!! 👍👍👍
Been watching Scotty for about 3 years now, endless supply of information learned a lot from him, when he gets on a roll doubles as a standup comedian. Treasure trove of information.
The so called discount is short lived. I would also recommend not getting glass coverage that pays for chip repair. That is reported as a “claim” and a claim is a claim. If you try to look at other companies to save money they see you have a claim or more. You can tell them it was only chip repair. Doesn’t matter. They load for it! Its a ploy so you cannot look to save money
@@thomasodetinape4180Yeah they posture like they're all about helping vets. Any time I got a quote from them it was twice as much as other insurance companies for the same coverage.
I once got conned into getting a Hum through Verizon that plugged into the OBD2 port. Had it on my wife's brand new Subaru. It was supposed to basically keep tabs on the car's health proactively, which it did poorly, but then the transmission started shifting erratically. Wasted time taking it back and forth to the dealer then simply removed the junky Hum and it was fine. Wish I had known beforehand. Great info as usual, Scotty!
Scotty, I've been driving with a dongle that keeps my GMC Yukon from switching back to 4 cylinders for years now and I haven't had any issues. When I take it out and it switches to 4 cylinders I get a very strange hum sound. This device cured that hum and vibration.
I have it in my Corvette to stop the cylinder deactivation which is known to kill the transmission. No issues. I disconnect prior to any service and leave it my pocket.
I have the same diagnostic tool Its far from an expensive tool Very cheap, anyone can get for very cheap You can run stuff on your obd2 port I have a dash cam in mine
Surly I’m not the only one checking TH-cam regularly to see if Scotty has a new video up lol! Always great info & funny! The laughing horse he throws in there when he laughs cracks me up!
SCOTTY~!!! Right on the head!!! I got one of those things on my new subarucrosstrek. I used it, and I had to have it reset by my dealership if I wasnt in warranty I would have to pay for it. Liberty Mutual offered this to lower the insurance by up to 30% I told them it screwed up my electronics and they apologized and said we'll give you 10%. Wish i would've seen this video to start!
I have a Garmin Bluetooth dongle for my gps. This old gps allowed me to have digital gauges for speed, rpm, coolant temp, battery charge, etc. It also acted as a cheap code reader. Very useful. Fortunately, I never had a problem for the past decade with it on 24/7.
I have a plug from my aftermarket Pioneer head unit in my OBD port, It monitors the MPH, Braking, intake temp, load, fuel, tire pressure, battery voltage and RPM. Never had any issues so far (knock on wood)!
I’ve had a Range Technology tuner in my OBD2 in my suburban for the last 5 years since new. 140k miles and it hasn’t caused me issues. Disables the AFM and I love it. Take it out when I go on a 2+ hour long drive.
I had a chuckle at your technical term for a failure - Blowing a raspbery I can't recall having done that before but now I am retired and doing wee car repairs I will definatley be using it.
Scotty..I have been a subscriber for years... Many TH-camrs get complacent... You absolutely knock it out of the park again and again... VERY WELL DONE 😉👍🙌
One of my favorite things about his videos is that he never yells at me to smash that like button, subscribe and get notified every 10 seconds. Excellent! Kinda think people know to do that by now if they like certain content.
For what it's worth, I've had a Range Technology AFM/DFM Disabler plugged in my 2017 Sierra for well over a year without a single problem. Turns off the awful cylinder deactivation. And it cost a LOT more than $9.99!!!
I wish I had known this many years ago! I too got caught up with that constant monitoring and had Torque Pro and one of those bluetooth OBD2 scanners. Yeah. Never again! Anyone I hear who has one, I tell them to remove it ASAP! That thing fried my ECM and it cost me $1,300 for a new one with programming. Thank you for spreading the word!
Statefarm has one that sticks to the windshield behind the rear-view mirror. It's wireless and uses bluetooth. It connects to your phone to monitor your driving. It also monitors when you move the phone! (distracted driving). I place my phone in the cup holder and leave it alone. My Tomtom has bluetooth hands free calling so I never have to move the phone and can still receive calls.
Very true on the tires. I had really nice grippy tires, put 110K on them. Car spends 99% of its life in the garage. No dry rot but they were 12 years old and you could feel how hard and slick they had become. Tread was getting low but otherwise they looked great.
I replace the street tires on my cars 3 years from date of manufacture, regardless of tread depth. Now, the life of my track tires is measured in hours and laps so aging out is not a problem LOL.
I've had a Ktuner plugged into my Honda for over 3 years. I assume it's quality and won't screw up my ecu. And I can always use it to reflash the computer.
My tenant who lives with me is a pretty incentive mechanic too And I am so glad that he turned me on to your existing You Tube channel.... I don't know why they just don't build a vehicle where I could remove the computer when I'm not using the vehicle.....then maybe the manufacturers could start engineering vehicles that the average person could repair without ripping the whole engine apart to fix what needs to be fixed..... please don't leave You Tube thank you for your service and I wish that you could have worked on the 95 Saturn SL 1 that I once drove.
Thanks Scotty! Even proctologist and surgeons know all about not shoving random things into places where they should not go. It causes all sorts of problems or issues. Rule of thumb if it is not in the plans of the creator or designer dot shove it in. American family actually has a travel app that operates via data being transmitted from the phone and GPS. It's fun because it works in whatever vehicle you are operating or riding in. It can even tell if your the driver or passenger.
Thanks for covering this. I used one of the allstate ones for a few months... kept drawing my car's battery down when it was turned off. Mechanics couldn't find the darn draw because they had it unplugged while testing. Whoops. Of course now they use the ios/android app to do this, but it has no idea if you are driving or not.
Agreed for most regular use situations. I had a hondata system for my 09 civic si, and it could take data when I drove, it also aloud for tuning while I drove it (use a passenger), it was fun and worked, but yes this is not covered under warranty. In his case you are taking the vehicle integrity in your own knowledge base. I think this stuff is so encrypted now however that we can't e-tune anything anymore.
You do not get cheaper insurance because you drive safe, you get cheaper insurance because they sell your data for great money which sells for around 10 years of insurance payments and you still have to pay for the insurance while given a miserable discount.
A late Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you, Scotty! Thanks for giving the public facts about care issues and the how-to's when it comes to car and truck repairs and maintenance and products to keep cars running as the SHOULD.
Depends on what's hooked up. I had an auto start for my key. I installed it myself. It bridges the OBD port. Product by MPC. I plugged it into a 2015 Ford Fusion Ecoboost. Had it for a year. No problems. It depends on what is hooked up.
Ive had transmission flushes done every 50,000 miles on every single vehicle i have ever owned and im old like scotty lol and ive never had a transmission issue and i usually keep my trucks for about 250,000 miles and then i sell them because i live in the northeast and the rust eats them. My last truck had 16 quarts of fluid in the transmission but if you only drop the pan only 6 quarts comes out and the other 10 quarts of dirty fluid stays in the cooler/converter ect, so i get them flushed to get all 16 quarts of old fluid out no way im leaving all that dirty old fluid inside.
Vote Scotty - 2024🤘😎🇺🇸 I recently got my first truck and it's a 2003 Tundra V8. Videos like this are blowing my head apart on becoming educated with cars, just how much I got suckered by the dealership, and what I need to do to rehab this sucker! lol And I love that you included motorcycles in this one!!!! Thanks for all that you do ❤
Scotty, just recently discovered your video's I have learned more from a few of your talks than in all 50 years of driving crazy. and just now I learn that green econo plug in my OBD needs to come out asap, and its going to ! thanks I drive a 2012 toyota Yaris SE hatchback, best car ever, and I still drive my 1986 Mazda B2000 LX ( put in a 2200cc in 2004) long bed truck with 325,000 or more miles, love both vehicles. Lord bless
Hello from southern california Scotty, you have helped probably millions of us to keep our old clunker going. Mine a 2001 toyota highlander 225k. Have you ever thought if writing a book with all your great advice and knowledge? A lot of us would surely buy it! God bless you for all your help!
Alot of people used them thing to stop the afm in Chevy vehicle's thinking thats going to prevent getting a stuck lifter but it doesn't the only way to prevent a afm liter from failure is to remove the afm stuff out the motor and put the normal lifters and cam shaft in your vehicle
LOL I raced top fuel Harley's from 2003 to 2010 full-time all over the country. When I first started I bought a 20-year-old Suzuki 250 to use as a pit bike. It had the original tires. We used it extensively for those 7 years. Many times we used it for grocery runs that were miles from the track. Had it at 70 mph with two people on it more than once. Those tires held up just fine. It had the original fuel lines too!
You right the OBD2 car connector is designed to plug anything on it forever, and drive the car, it is only for car diagnostic for short time, I learned the hard way, but I was lucky the scanner connector harness got burned and separated and the scanner stop working.
Those OBDLink bluetooth adapers are quality. The mx+ being the latest and greatest. LX is good too (no ios support or some features). They have no conflicts when auto detecting the can bus and switching the American MS and SW. And can do bi-directional. They are great for gathering data for days at a time. The cheaper modules conflict and start screwing with the network. Mainly putting 13 volts where it shouldn't be. Who knows whats in those snapshot things and why they are even allowed after so many complaints.
Funny how literally 3 hours prior to this video being released while I was cleaning the interior of my car. I found that I had left one of those Bluetooth dongles in the OBD port 😅. It had been like 2 months! I completely forgot about it lol. No issues with my vehicle though. No driving with them plugged in folks take it from Scotty.
My brother has had one of those wifi hotpost dongles plugged into his cars port. Verizon and ATT sell them. He has traveled all over the country, 300k+ miles and 4 different vehicles over the years, never had any issues with having such dongle always plugged in. Many of the unmarked Police vehicles also have things like Cell boosters and other vehicle tracking/monitoring tools plugged into those port as well.
Yes they can internally short out and send 12volts through the CAN system and other low voltage circuits in the obd2 connector. If you want to shut off GM AFM just do it the right way and shut it off through HP Tuner and if you have one in for insurance savings you either have a bad record or need to find another insurance company…
Just did major tuneups on two vehicles Subaru crosstrek and Rav 4 plugs coils tranny fluids differentials water pumps brake fluids plugs coils serpentine belts t stats antifreeze brakes rotors pads I like to keep them maintained
Never use snap shot it’s actually considered garbage. Also, the reader is always drawn to power off your electrical system which can kill your battery if you don’t drive your car often.
I plugged one into my 2013 Honda Civic I pressed scan it was scanning then my rpm and my gauges started moving around as I was in horror. I then removed it then the battery to clear the codes thankfully no damage
I ran one of those Progressive monitoring devices in my OBDII port for 6 months. I live in an area with VERY expensive rates, so anything I could do to lower it I would. I guess I was lucky, never had any problems.
Apparently Scott is not familiar with the ScanGauge tool. This can be left connected because it does not work in the same way that most other cheap devices function. I had one connected for years to my Prius to monitor the hybrid system and also on a regular SUV. Fantastic device!
I have my car professionaly tuned through my hondata where i can monitor the car. i feel like that an exception even though its technically not supposed to be on the road, i dont drive with it in often but when i need to datalog ill use it or to flash another ecu calibration.
I have a Ford Focus St with a tune. To put the tune on, it was done by a professional tuner using a Cobb Access port. I run the Cobb Access port in the OBD port, and it shows me a lot of information. Some of that info is ignition corrections for the 4 cylinders, actual AFR, boost etc. I don't have to have it plugged in once the tune was installed, but it's nice to monitor those things while driving to see if anything goes wrong with the engine. What are your thoughts on this?
No doubt, you've helped a lot of people and you know a lot of stuff. Don't want to take anything from you, but...I've been using those OBD11 port fuel savers for years now, along with about 100 friends, never had a problem. They do more good than harm. Just fyi.
Hey Scotty, what about a manufacturer tune, such as Ford's Performance Tune? Is it better to apply the tune and then just disconnect? Thanks for all the knowledge you share by the way.
I plug my dash cam into the cigarette lighter but everything you read says to plug into a dongal and connect to the obd port. It’s suppose to provide a constant connection. I know better but this has to cause damage.
Nice video Scotty a comment about those pirellis on your bike. I have been riding sport bikes for 40 years. I've always used Michelin tires on my bikes so last year I bought a set of pirellis Diablo's worst tires I've ever had. I had 6 flats with those tires and I'll never buy them again. These tires are too sticky for everyday riding they pick up everything on the road. They are probably good for track days days but for everyday riding forget it. Michelin pilot roads are the best tires you can get. They go for around 600 dollars a set. I'm a big fan keep on going what your doing. God bless
I had a nissan sentra a few years ago, I hooked up a t-mobile sync up drive in the obd port it would get hot and cause the doors to unlock and all kinds of stuff while driving
Watched your video from few years ago about batteries. Well since alternator charges the cars battery why don’t the manufacturer put an alternator on all the electric cars. Not only you wouldn’t have to plug it in and pay for a charge but at the same time there wouldn’t be a restriction of how many miles those cars can be driven before needing a charge
They do. The electric motors that turn the wheels also work as generators when the vehicle’s momentum spins them instead of the electricity from the battery. That’s what regenerative braking is.
And ECU is not "thousands of dollars" and you do realize the dash it hooked to the same module 24/7, right? I'll keep running Torque Pro with a bluetooth module to it connected to my phone thanks very much. Almost zero chance of damage in any way.
I totally agree with you on old types, i had a old 94 Mitsubishi Pajaro Australia the old tyres just ended up peeling the treads off. It always pays to check the age of your tyres 😅

The name says it all. On board diagnostic (2). If you drive with it plugged in, you should expect a change. Some perameteres change.
I just started using a bluetooth OBDII dongle on my Yamaha. Guess that's coming out immediately! Thanks Scotty
Vote Scotty - 2024🤘😎🇺🇸
I recently got my first truck and it's a 2003 Tundra V8. Videos like this are blowing my head apart on becoming educated with cars, just how much I got suckered by the dealership, and what I need to do to rehab this sucker! lol
And I love that you included motorcycles in this one!!!!
Thanks for all that you do ❤
Scotty, just recently discovered your video's I have learned more from a few of your talks than in all 50 years of driving
crazy. and just now I learn that green econo plug in my OBD needs to come out asap, and its going to ! thanks I drive a 2012 toyota Yaris SE hatchback, best car ever, and I still drive my 1986 Mazda B2000 LX ( put in a 2200cc in 2004) long bed truck with 325,000 or more miles, love both vehicles. Lord bless
Hello from southern california Scotty, you have helped probably millions of us to keep our old clunker going. Mine a 2001 toyota highlander 225k. Have you ever thought if writing a book with all your great advice and knowledge?
A lot of us would surely buy it! God bless you for all your help!
I have had Edge Tuners plugged in to my old Powerstrokes OBD Ports for over 10 years. Zero problems.
Wow! Good advice, Scotty. Those insurance dongles are a dangerous scam.
Can't help stupid! @@jbrown4137
@@jbrown4137lol
@@jbrown4137so. It’s not plugged into that port a Scotty was talk about? On you windscreen? How’s that work please?.
We used the Verizon Hum for over 3 years in a 2006 envoy never had a problem.
I have FIXD I think it’s called. Never dx my evap codes . I had 2!!
Scotty is a hoot! Yes, Scotty, I choose life. I don't wanna die! Keep up the good work, old man.
I used the GEICO app on my phone instead of the dongle because of what you recommended Scotty.
The arm hand waving is classic 🤣😂
What about a Range AFM disabler? I guess I'd take the tradeoff of staying in all-time V8 mode in my '10 Silverado with 180K than the alternative.
I've had a Range AFM disabler plugged in my 2017 Sierra for well over a year without a single problem.
My 2002 bike has 4,000 miles but original tires. Been meaning to get them ordered!
Similar. Have GPS trackers oh two of my kids cars for 8 years. Never an issue.
Shhhhh. You're spoiling the story.
Yes they can internally short out and send 12volts through the CAN system and other low voltage circuits in the obd2 connector. If you want to shut off GM AFM just do it the right way and shut it off through HP Tuner and if you have one in for insurance savings you either have a bad record or need to find another insurance company…
You teach em Scotty! go for it.
This guy is great !
Listen up people!
Good to know ! Thanks Scotty !
Gotta love that frantic yet confident energy 😂
Insurance companies only take advice from actuaries not mechanics. Simple.
trust an insurance company ? that alone is pretty far fetched
@@juki6377 they're only their to take your money
THIS IS A WAY FOR THE INSURANCE COMPANY NOT TO PAY
Moral to story - "Don't leave yer dongle in". 😃
Thats what she said!
I ain't about to pull mine out.
I plugged one into my 2013 Honda Civic I pressed scan it was scanning then my rpm and my gauges started moving around as I was in horror. I then removed it then the battery to clear the codes thankfully no damage
Love the content ! 😂I watch one or two of your videos every day , 🇨🇦
I ran one of those Progressive monitoring devices in my OBDII port for 6 months. I live in an area with VERY expensive rates, so anything I could do to lower it I would. I guess I was lucky, never had any problems.
I never knew about the breakout box you have. This video is very informative
Apparently Scott is not familiar with the ScanGauge tool. This can be left connected because it does not work in the same way that most other cheap devices function. I had one connected for years to my Prius to monitor the hybrid system and also on a regular SUV. Fantastic device!
Scangauge has been a life saver for my vehicle. Very lovely real time diagnosis.
Same goes for the Blue Driver he mentioned. You can leave it installed to receive live streaming data on the app as you drive.
I had a scangauge on my is300 for 5 years. Never had a a problem
7:39 i use the exact same bike tyres and im in Australia.
Scotty when it comes to automobiles you are a wealth of information. (Could you talk if your hands were in your pockets?)
I was thinking the same thing since I have a COBB access port plugged in my WRX 24-7.....lol
I’d take Scotty’s advice. Only use the OBD port to diagnose a problem. If everything seems to be fine, don’t plug anything into the OBD port!
@@lukek1949 are you Scotty?
No doubt, you've helped a lot of people and you know a lot of stuff. Don't want to take anything from you, but...I've been using those OBD11 port fuel savers for years now, along with about 100 friends, never had a problem. They do more good than harm. Just fyi.
Had an insurance dongle for 2 or 3 months, sent it back, got a lower rate. 2004 gmc envoy. No problems at all.
I've had one of those insurance plug ins for over a year. Haven't noticed anything.
Great advice on motorcycle tires! Just put me Dunlop Elite 4s on the goldwing.
What do you think about the FIXD code reader? Thanks
Several years ago I used 1 from Verizon. It caused several lights to come on. I took it to Honda and they removed it. Luckily it did no damage.
Hey Scotty, what about a manufacturer tune, such as Ford's Performance Tune? Is it better to apply the tune and then just disconnect? Thanks for all the knowledge you share by the way.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge👍👍
Im glad i watched this video i had no idea i just stuck mine in a day before i seen this video and left it in the port 👍🏾
I plug my dash cam into the cigarette lighter but everything you read says to plug into a dongal and connect to the obd port. It’s suppose to provide a constant connection. I know better but this has to cause damage.
He is absolutely right. One of those dongles from an insurance company caused my gauges to nuts for over a year.
When he keeps waving his hands,
Is he using Jedi Mind Tricks on us?
Watched your video from few years ago about batteries. Well since alternator charges the cars battery why don’t the manufacturer put an alternator on all the electric cars. Not only you wouldn’t have to plug it in and pay for a charge but at the same time there wouldn’t be a restriction of how many miles those cars can be driven before needing a charge
DRRRRRRP!
They do. The electric motors that turn the wheels also work as generators when the vehicle’s momentum spins them instead of the electricity from the battery. That’s what regenerative braking is.
But an alternator would work full-time.@@ryanespinoza7297
And ECU is not "thousands of dollars" and you do realize the dash it hooked to the same module 24/7, right? I'll keep running Torque Pro with a bluetooth module to it connected to my phone thanks very much. Almost zero chance of damage in any way.
I totally agree with you on old types, i had a old 94 Mitsubishi Pajaro Australia the old tyres just ended up peeling the treads off. It always pays to check the age of your tyres
😅
We need a guy like this fir lawn tractors
Hey Scotty how about the dongle that changes the 4cyl Chevy back to 8cyl 5.3 v8 that is
Thanks,Scotty.
Thanks again Scotty!!
