You are 100% right. I GREW UP on Aparo's art, and it never ever resonated or did anything for me. I get the style and the "classic" nature of it all, but it always looked a little off. 🤷
Deny O'Neil is on record as giving Aparo the two big books of Knightfall (the back breaking and the Azrael/Bane fight) because it would guarantee Aparo a comfortable retirement
To be completely honest I never really got into DC, I read a few titles over the years, collected some like Batman & The Outsiders and Teen Titans in the 80s, but the best DC series imo is ATARI Force, a 20 issue maxi-series from '83/'84. It was a fun sci-fi adventure with memorable characters like Dart and Pakrat and a Darth Vaderesque villain mixed with Stryfe as he was to Cable, it had a big Star Wars vibe to it. If you played ATARI games back then you could send away for their 4 issue mini-series called ATARI Force where they battled various video game characters like Space Invaders and whatnot, the DC comic series follows up 25 years later with the leader of the original team forming a new one.
Aparo was truly good in the 70s/80s but he'd obviously lost the juice at this point. It's pretty admirable of DC to have him do this issue, as he probably made a huge payday from it.
Aparo was 61 by this point yeah I can see where his art just didn't fit with the likes of McFarlane, Lee and Liefeld but check out his Batman on Brave & The Bold from the 1970's and it was some of the best of that time. The armored Batman costume was DC's answer to Image Comics' thirst of having ridiculous superheroes in nonsensical costumes but it was thankfully for a limited time and Batman soon returned back to his old costume.
Yeah the 90s with marvel doing the 2099 series. Everything was more edgy and extreme. I remember daredevil even got new suit some armor back then too didn’t he? I think dc was just trying to keep up with the times the best they could. Looking Back marvel had all the younger comic book creators and dc felt like it was like the old grumpy man still trying to be cool and hip but wasn’t . Sort of like it still is today not much has changed I think
I was a teenager when knightfall was coming out and I started reading it (maybe 12~13) and what gripped me from the start was actuallyJim Aparo's art. I loved the grounded nature of it and that it looked mature and realistic, which i though was a great fit for the dark story. I couldn't stand Image comics at the time, which to me looked confusing and flashy and to be honest, even at the time, juvenile. it really is all a matter of opinion :)
5:44 have to agree, I never collected DC comics outside of the random mini-series (like Bisley’s Lobo). DC’s editorial always forced traditional layouts and figure drawing that came off flat on their main titles and the coloring was just awful. Funny thing though DC’s art pool has gotten more favorable since then, and in my opinion better than most of what Marvel is putting out these days. Both companies need to go back to marketing great artists and pulling talent with striking art styles.
Man, you're right. That art sucked. I remember getting hyped on the covers, then opening them up and thinking what is this nerdy old school shit? I'm 10, and used to Jim Lee!
DC artwork usually sucked. The characters are great, but the comics were not. Much better as cartoons or movies. Marvel is why comics were so popular. They carried the industry for many years, mostly Spider-Man and X-Men.

Jim Aparo legend.
This is Aparo in old age he should not be judged by this era his 1970s work is top tier
Terry Austin also not at his strongest.

Lex Luthor contributed to the re-building of Gotham City after the earthquake. it's canon. But I dunno who that other bald dude is.
The bald guy was called Zombie, one of Bane's lackeys I think who altered the venom drug for Bane to use.

Jim Aparo is a Batman legend but yes he got boring over the years
