    Why Did THESE Katy Perry Singles Underperform?
    With nine number one singles, fourteen Top Ten hits and eighteen to crack the Top Twenty of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Katy Perry has proven she’s a certified chart queen. Though in recent years her success on these charts has dwindled, her singles are undoubtedly cemented in pop music and pop culture.
    Though having such an expansive catalog packed tight with ultimate bangers, not every song of hers got equal recognition, deservingly or not. We’ll be looking at all her albums, “One of the Boys”, “Teenage Dream”, “PRISM”, “Witness” and “Smile!”
    So today, let’s take a look at the Katy Perry songs that didn’t climb the ranks of their peers and find out why. Be sure to also comment what your favorite underrated Katy Perry song is! To clarify, we’ll be looking specifically at the Hot 100, but at the end we’ll see how these songs did internationally.

    So, I thought I'd share what really has led to Katy's current status when it comes to charts, promotional issues and what have you. Sure, we can blame the label for not investing or say Katy doesn't really care for charts. That's all fine and good, however we don't _really_ know what is going on at Capitol, which is why I didn't specifically mention that in the video. That aside, I believe *"Dark Horse* is the reason Katy is where she is at. You don't reach this point in your career without the issue beginning _years_ in advance. So let me explain...
    - Though her team couldn't have predicted the success of Dark Horse, it was apparent upon it's promotional release it was going to be a big song. I won't reiterate what happened as it has already been discussed in the video, but with a 194,000 downloads and a #17 position, it should have been sent as the next single right away. Walking on Air debuted at #34 with 113,000 downloads and should have followed Dark Horse.
    - We can't say if Dark Horse being released earlier would have extended or shortened it's run on the Hot 100, but with aggressive promotion we could argue it would have peaked sooner and perhaps it's interest would have begun to falter in March/April of 2014 as opposed September/October of 2014. So, we push Dark Horse as a single in early October of 2013. It leverages Roar and they both do great. As she already did, Katy could perform Roar, Dark Horse and Walking on Air within her festival sets and perhaps could have opted for Dark Horse / Walking on Air for SNL.
    - Spring 2014 rolls around, The Prismatic World Tour is announced and I think now is when Katy could push Walking on Air as the next single, or even Legendary Lovers for a summer release. I would argue Legendary Lovers would be better for a late summer/early autumn release though. I think Katy could have had time to prepare proper promotion and a well-suited video for Walking On Air to release before she went on tour at the end of May 2014. It became a fan-favorite, so clearly the potential for the track existed way back almost TEN years ago!
    - I can't confidently say if Walking on Air would surpass it's peak of #34, but with the promotion she was getting and the effort she put into live performances, I could easily see it falling between the positions of #5 - #15. There's a good amount of award shows in May she could have promoted Walking on Air at, and even done what she did with Birthday in which the performance was streamed live from her tour!
    - Walking on Air rides out the summer of 2014 and by August/September, we get Legendary Lovers. Katy was across the world during the latter half of 2014, so given that if she opted out of live-streaming her performances or was unable to coordinate with award shows to perform Legendary Lovers, we could have seen a #10 - #25 peak I'd argue. That is really only based off the fact she wouldn't be able to do extensive promotion. I think LL would have a shorter life span, but if it featured Drake like it was rumored to, it could have seen success behind the likes of Dark Horse, hitting within the Top 10.
    - We now have two options. If it's November/December of 2014 and we know the Super Bowl is in February of 2015, Katy could release a ballad such as Unconditionally for the winter months and let it ride out to perform a _NEW_ single at the Super Bowl, or keep LL in her belt and give it a spot in the setlist. I'd argue her setlist is perfect, it represents her catalogue the best and covers a lot of the hits while giving Missy Elliot and Lenny Kravitz their time to shine. Maybe LL gets a music video that premiers during the Super Bowl - or Unconditionally if we go with that angle.
    - Again, we're still at a cross roads. We have a theoretical video premiere of the new single Unconditionally or of LL. Katy could opt to perform one or the other at the Grammys the following week. If LL had a longer chart run and was still doing well - that would be the OBVIOUS choice. If not, Unconditionally could take that space. Unconditionally had a shorter life span, but that was because of Dark Horse. Would a possible LL feat. Drake lead to the same outcome? Probably. So for this, let's say LL gets a 2015 Grammys performance.
    - At this point, Katy is primarily on the campaign trail and at Galas doing performances. We at this point have 5 singles. Summer is coming up so she's likely going to go with her Birthday/TIHWD route that requires minimal promotion especially since she's still touring between all of this. Though it wouldn't end the era on the strongest note, I think this would just end up being the most suitable. She also could utilize International Smile, as that would be such a fun summer jam.
    - Katy could have also done something pretty massive after the Super Bowl. She could have announced SOMETHING. What that would be - I'm not sure. Allegedly at that time she had three tracks; Heartache Crusade, She's So Creepy and Up In Flames that were going to be released, or were rumored to. We could have been given a re-issue of PRISM with those tracks or cut tracks, similar to The Complete Confection. She could have done a Greatest Hits compilation, a body of unreleased work. SOMETHING.
    - Through it all, Dark Horse ended up overshadowing everything that came after it - regardless of how they did. That success will not be replicated and what I offered may show a course that could have been taken to avoid that from happening. Dark Horse overtook the PRISM era, so every choice made after it was really crucial. Katy's next chances to ignite success that was consistent was with Rise and Never Really Over - both great tracks that had no album attached and no promotion. I don't know what Katy really needs to do at this point, but I can think back to 2013 - 2015 where she could redirect the success she had. I know it doesn't seem like Dark Horse is the sole responsibility for everything now, but because it didn't allow the PRISM era to end as high as Teenage Dream and every opportunity after it was squashed...I'd argue so.
    With my reimagining of the PRISM era, it would follow as such:
    * Roar (August, 2013) Peak - #1
    * Dark Horse (October 2013) Peak - #1
    * Walking on Air (April 2014) Peak #5 - #15
    * Legendary Lovers (September 2014) Peak #10 - #25 [if featuring Drake as rumored, #1 - #10]
    * Unconditionally (December 2014) Peak #14
    * International Smile (April 2015) Peak #10 - #20
    I don't know whether to include Birthday and THIWD, since Birthday could supplement for International Smile, but you've got the idea.
    I've literally typed this out like 10 times, and I think this is as good as it's gonna get - so let me know YOUR thoughts!

      People generally think Witness was her end, but the dangerous movements started in Prism era, it was so wrong. If Dark Horse didn’t go #1 randomly it would be worse scenario. And her depression started in PWT times, not in Witness tbh. The more annoying thing is her after Witness era, at this point I believe someone is sabotaging her.

    I think Katy needs a _Ray of Light_ era.
    Madonna was crucified for _Erotica_ , just like Katy with _Witness_ . Madonna tried to soften her image with _Bedtime Stories_ , just like Katy tried to do with _Smile_ . Madonna took a break to do movies (for better or worse), and Katy is doing _American Idol_ and Vegas. Vegas is a great step for Katy, she can just stay there for a few years with Daisy and Orlando and then come back better than ever. When Madonna had Lourdes, she got inspired to do _Ray of Light_ . I hope being a mom to Daisy will give Katy the confidence and inspiration to give us a major comeback. "When I'm Gone", while not commercially successful, has been getting a positive reception; my only complaint is that it's too good to just be 2:42. I know she can do it.
    Miley did a similar thing. She did _Dead Petz_ and was crucified for it, and then did _Younger Now_ to soften her image; did not help. But she took a break, did The Voice, and released _Plastic Hearts_ , which received rave reviews (and was totally snubbed by the Grammys, but that's a conservation for another day). Now Miley is back and doing great. Katy just needs a break, and Vegas is where she should stay for now.
    *UPDATE:* Some people in the comments disagree with my Madonna comparison, and I completely see where you're coming from, but I was more talking about her reputation. Madonna was at first seen as the Queen of Pop, but after _Erotica_ , people thought that she was over, despite commercial success, but after _Ray of Light_ , Madonna became the Queen of Reinvention and has done well since (if you ignore _American Life_ and _MDNA_ ).
    There are plenty of icons who "flopped", tried to soften their image, and then made great comebacks. I got a spreadsheet of it, but IDK how to share it.

    Are you katycat? Just asking tho.. You've made a lot of videos about Katy Perry as you should. I think the singles that underperformed were due to lack of promotion and radio plays. And I think Katy's fan base is not really big although they're dedicated. Katy didn't really build a huge solid fan base like Taylor, Beyonce, Nicki, Gaga and Ariana. I guess she really depended on the public and you know, the GP taste in music changes every year. And when an artist spends 10 years in the industry, the public get tired of them and focus on new artists. After 10 years, only your fans can keep you in the spotlight.

    I personally think that “tucked” from smile could have been MASSIVE. After never really over, she should have not released small talk and harleys in hawaii as promotional singles (as they did not chart well). She should have waited a sec, and then dropped tucked as the lead for smile. Honestly, she should have featured dua lipa or kylie minogue in it since the song is very disco inspired. If promoted well, it could have been MASSIVE with a killer MV. and i think this is one of her best songs of all time. Its groovy and its literally pop perfection. She then should have released cry abt it later, only love, or harleys in hawaii as singles to follow up. I also don’t know why her team decided to go with this clown/circus theme? For me it personally didn’t cut it. Smile had potential and its sad to see the promotion did not do it justice.

      Dua Lipa on Tucked - YES! I see the vision. That song definitely should’ve been a single. I would’ve put it out after “Daisies” and made it the summer single instead of “Smile”. And I also agree about the clown theme. I’ve heard a lot of people say that they didn’t understand or didn’t like that branding. The Play residency branding is so much better and would’ve been perfect for Smile I think. I also agree that Small Talk should have NEVER come out - idk what she and Charlie Puth were on when they made that song😭 Harleys in Hawaii was always the better Charlie produced single

    If i were to guess Katy and her team didn't expect the huge success Teenage Dream would be, but you can see the effort they put into it, and following that perfect strike is a tough act for everyone and nearly impossible, so it's expected she would “fail” in comparison, but one thing i’ve noticed since then, and became more notorious starting Prism, is that she's pretty inconsistent in terms of aesthetics, concepts and ideas for an era, she throws many things into the mix and she doesn't fully commit to one and make it the central pillar, i remember watching the teasers for Prism and the whole funeral for her TD persona and thinking it was so cool, i love when artists take an era this serious with concrete imagery and references, it felt like she was going on a darker route, then came Roar and she was pretty much the same as in TD, every video was a different concept and nothing really stuck, same thing happened with Witness, besides taking a relatively long hiatus for music standards, specially pop artists who need to be constantly in the public memory so they don't fade, her pre-era shenanigans (many controversial statements mainly AND consistently about Britney, her radical change of look, her political stances that alienated a huge portion of her fanbase) took their toll before the rollout even started, and then when the singles arrived the same problem persisted: each one had a different concept and aesthetic even for the cover artworks, you couldn't tell they were all for the same album, she threw many ideas at once and it became a mess, and by the time the album debuted she was declared death alive, you can also notice the same issues of inconsistency in Smile, but this time she was sadly long-gone deemed irrelevant, shame cause she was a true popstar

    The reasons why she is flopping:
    1. Katy is single artists like Rihanna and Ariana Grande. This type of artist heavily rely on radio hits (banger). If they don't have hit on their album, their album would flop harder.
    2. Katy has no supportive/loyal fandom.
    3. Katy's fans don't purchase her album (pure sales), they prefer to buy the singles. Idk maybe her album has no enough appeal to the fans/general public.
    4. She was too political (in 2016)
    5 . Her fans have grown up and already outgrew her music.
    6. Her music is mostly categorized as bubble gum dance-pop which is sometimes tiring.
    7. She needs to reinvent her persona by releasing pop-rock/alt-pop/ballad and stop playing her old famous songs for a while.
    8. She needs to stop doing theatrical type of show with extravagant and colorful props and dancer. Enough. Fans don't need that. Play with bands and singing live pop-rock/alt-pop/ballad.

      I remember when Chained to the Rhythm came out and there was not really anything screaming a decline. She had some mild criticism for its empty political messaging. It wasn't until Bon Appetit and cutting her her hair (after mocking Britney Spears btw) that it really started to get a bit ugly.
      I always imagined her as having a sort of grounded image (as opposed to the more out there-image that Lady Gaga had) and Swish Swish really camped her image up (and it was already just camp enough to not make you scream gay icon) which probably turned a lot of her straighter casual listeners, most of what were her old target audience, off. When she became more grounded for Never Really Over, it set up for success (Small Talk and Harleys are too forgettable), but she camped her image up again for the Smile era (and even more so in her current era). There's nothing wrong with that but the trade off is that she's only pleasing the stan community types and not really the general public.

      I do too...but it still leaves so many unknowns to the WHY. Why isn't Capitol pulling their weight? Is Katy fine with it? Are they purposely not promoting her? Is her team just like, "Yeah, let's do the bare minimum". Katy has stated she doesn't care for big chart success anymore however. So we _truly_ don't know if she just doesn't mind at all...it's just so...bizarre and I want answers!

    Although I really like When I’m Gone and it’s cool to see Katy Perry go back to what made her special in the 2010s era, I don’t think Katy Perry’s music will ever be as big as she once was. And think it’s simply because she already had her prime time, and now there’s newer female pop stars like Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa and Doja Cat who are in their prime right now. It’s just how the times go. In a couple of years there may be other artists who take their place

    I think the Smile era could have been bigger with these singles...
    - Cry about it Later as lead single (this song had all the elements of the biggest songs at the time... it sounds retro like Dont Start now or Blinding Lights)
    - Smile and Daisies as promo singles (Smile because it's title track and Daisies just because it's special for Katy)
    - Champagne Problems as second sigle
    - Not The end Of The World as third one (could be a remix since it has trap influences)
    - Tucked as the next single
    - Only Love as the closer the era

    Katy Perry’s arc reminds me of Paula Abdul’s 30 years ago. If you weren’t alive then, you may not realize how massive she was from around 1988-1992. She had 10 consecutive Top 20 hits during this time including six #1s, and was considered every bit as massive as Madonna or Janet Jackson. Madonna was like that era’s Lady Gaga, Janet was the Rihanna, and Paula was the Katy. And similarly to Katy, Paula just kind of flopped with her third album … its singles stalled at #28 and #58, and poof she was gone. It’s hard to say why, but my guess is that both Paula and Katy had audiences that may have skewed slightly younger than their contemporaries, and when that’s the case you either have to mature along with them or watch them outgrow you. I think Katy and Paula both had trouble figuring out what their adult messages and personas were all about, whereas Madonna, Janet, Gaga and Rihanna had more longevity as they kept surprising audiences with drastic new looks, sounds and themes. But who knows. It also could be as simple as the singles just not being as strong.

    She just couldn’t seem to please the public - she tried insulting them with “chained to the rhythm” which didn’t work, then tried releasing really intelligent pop like “never really over” which they didn’t like either! I think the label lost faith in her and she just didn’t know what direction to go in 🤷‍♀️

    • @popdissected4400
      @popdissected4400  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your last point is spot on. I don't think her label knows what to do after "Witness" and whatever the hell approach they took with these "droplet" singles failed miserably. "NRO" was THE song to catapult her at least back into similar ranks of her peers and because they let it slide, it really just fumbled everything afterwords.

    I’ve noticed after watching many videos by Katy Cats and music lovers in general, there is a running theme of Katy Perry never picking the best singles for her albums. She always picks a solid lead single and then the follow up singles are always hit or miss. And the album always has at least one song that would’ve been a significantly better single than the others😭

  • @RhapsodyHC
    @RhapsodyHC 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Legendary Lovers would’ve been an easy #1!

    Cry About it Later would’ve been a better follow up more than Small Talk.

  • @Charlie-jl3ur

    I still believe that Prism single roll out should have been like this:
    1. Roar
    2. Unconditionally (it's a beautiful song and, at the time, it showcased more vulnerable side of Katy that she wanted to present with the Prism album. Though staling at #14, in the hindsight, I believe it was a success.)
    3. Dark Horse
    4. Here I'm a little bit 50/50 - I love Birthday, but I believe that Walking on Air would have been much bigger and would have received much more interesting visuals than B'day did... But let's say that we stick with Birthday. First off all, it should have got a different music video and a REAL live performance at BBMA 2014. Second off all, I feel like it should have been released maybe 3 weeks later, at the beginning of May, and Cash Cash Remix (gosh, it's so good) should have got at least the radio push. This way, I believe B'day would have peaked somewhere between #15 - #7.
    5. Walking on Air or Legendary Lovers - there's no doubt that these two songs, aside from Roar and Dark Horse, or THE MOST COMMERICAL SONGS on Prism and would have received FANTASTIC VISUALS. Let's say Katy releases Legendary... as a single in the late August and she performs it at 2014 MTV Vmas. Maybe a remix with a rapper (I read somewhere that Drake was supposed to jump on the remix of this track, but I feel that Iggy Azalea or Nicki would have been better choices) and additional radio/TV appearance and it would have peaked in the top 5 swiftly.
    6. The last sixth single should have been released around the time when Katy was announced as the headliner of the Super bowl halftime show and, imo, it should have been Stargate's produced track This Moment, which could have received simple video consisting of her during the Prism tour. If she had performed This Moment/Firework medley as the closing number of her Superbowl Performance, it would have definitely peaked somewhere between #25-#20.

    It's an underrated mid 2000s R&B with bilingual songs to honour her Portuguese heritage, beautifully produced by Timbaland and Danja (who would go on to produce Britney Spears' Blackout) and adopted a more carefree, sexy image.
