Garmin Connect Courses API: Course Sync w/ Strava and Komoot

  • Garmin have simplified the process of getting courses/routes onto their devices with Garmin Connect Courses API. Upon release there have been a few articles in the media that don't quite nail the details on how this works. Garmin Connect is still used. In fact, it is THE core component that makes this all work. I expect to see more mapping services added in the near future.

    When I switched from my Edge 810 to Elemnt Bolt, it was like a breath of fresh air seeing how easy it was to get routes onto my device. I figured SURELY Garmin would have caught up by now. Yeah, about that ...

    I tried this when it first came out and the route copied by the API differs from a rout exported and imported using a GPX format. There are issues with Strava segments, climb pro, and elevations. I’ve tried it on several routes and not been able to successfully work properly. My hope was that I could get to see Strava segments while navigating a route. Only sometimes, and then not very well. This needs work.

    Thanks for this Shane. I have been searching all day to try and find some way of "managing" a smaller subset of courses that are on my device at any one time. If I summarise correctly from your explanation, once a course has got onto the device, it will auto-update at next sync (if the course was edited), but it won't ever be removed. I'm looking because it seems my entire Komoot route list got synced to the watch. I would like to be able to push just specific routes/courses from Komoot to Connect and then to the device, but not all of them. Do you know if that is possible please? I still didn't find a way to "sort" the routes on the Fenix 6 to allow selection of the one I want quicker, hence wanting just a smaller subset on the device. Seems there is no way yet in connect to mark courses as "not for sync" to do that...

    So I’m still unclear on which is best for what I need- Roam or now a given Garmin device. I prefer Stravas route setting utility. But I have to have turn by turn directions. I also need on-the-fly course correction as I deal with changes during a long ride.

  • @Ydegaard

    This seems like a lot more work than simply downloading the respective apps in the garmin store and launching the routes directly on the device. I’ve been doing that for years, and i will likely keep using that method as it keeps me out of Garmin Connect. The UI on that platform is probably the worst i can recall ever using

    • @EverythingIsPhotogenic
      @EverythingIsPhotogenic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not sure why this is "more work" effectively it is removing the friction of the iq app. I can hit navigate and courses then be on my way... or hit IQ then find strava in the apps then go to courses then take extra long for it to load the handler app and course. It makes much more sense to run it natively 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Interesting little thing you said there, that you could run into problems if you have too many too long routes in Komoot. Is this something you know or something you guess? Asking because I have long suspected that my Wahoo units suffer (they sometimes do a lot of reboots and even spontaneous factory resets and removing a few long routes tend to stop that from happening) from something like that, and I've been thinking of trying Garmin just to see if they handle that better. Just an error message telling me that too many long routes are actually the problem would make me a lot happier. Few things frustrate me more than things that crash without providing any clue about what's going on.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not exactly what I said. If you have a TON of routes with any system imported then things become hard to manage. This is the same across any head unit.

    Would you be bale to make an update on this video. After being a Wahoo user for many years, I have just purchased a Garmin 1040. The sync of routes between Strava and Garmin is very crappy. Adding starts to existing routes dosen't add them I need to edit them and save. Removing the starts dosen't take them away from the Garmin - Its actually very bad, I i kinda which I stayed on the Wahoo.

      Yeah, their blutetooth connectivity really is rather... poor. Just yesterday my 530 lost the phone twice, lost the heart rate monitor and the cadence sensor at least five times and the speed sensor decided to do its own thing altogether, recording speeds up to 90km/h while I was standing still. While I've had intermittent problems before, things seem to be getting worse and worse with every update. Frankly, I'm tired of it. So much so I keep my ancient ROX 9.0 around, as it's proving to be more reliable just for the basics.

  • @sevenrats

    I think I disagree. I just used this feature this morning. You have to download the Strava Courses app in Connect IQ. Then under the very first menu on the device (not the menu in a profile but the top menu) go to Connect IQ apps and Strava routes will be there. Open Strava routes and if you have sync'd the device any courses from strava should show up. Then in order for them to get into the courses list on the device select ride route. This will download it to the device. Then it will be on the device under the courses menu in your profiles. Garmin is a weird company.
