This is so much of what we do in psychotherapy. We identify, examine and disrupt those patterns that often unfortunately define us. What I don’t see us doing is trying on the persona of the other in our fraught relationships.
A Madhyamika (san-lun) answer is that we are not so much a mess as we are label upon the mess, which is but a basis of designation. That makes sense, because "the mess" is not an object of observation: we never apprehend one's whole body (inside and outside, back and front, etc) with a singular instance of consciousness. Similarly, we don't apprehend the mess with an instance of consciousness. Therefore, we could not say "I see him", "she drinks a soda", etc. because the "he" thought of as "the mess" is neither seen, nor touched, and does not engage in the action of drinking. That being said, I love Michael Puett. Especially his lecture on Zhuangzi and Confucius as well as his work (co-written) on Rituals and its consequences. I also get his conception of "the self as a mess" is not specifically Buddhist, much less san-lun.
If our "self" is in the north, or in the south, or in the east or maybe in the west....who is it then that is looking for our "self"? we are actually never lost from yourself, once we realize that, there would exist no need to search for "self"

Since I assisted ChinaX classes, I've been in love with that great mind of Professor Puett! Love his lectures!
The most beautiful explanation of rituals ("Li") I have heard. Now I have more respect to my own culture.
What a great mind! Thank you!
A life changing talk
Great great talk. Inspiring. Thank you, bless you. All your dreams come true.
Riveting as ever, thank you Michael Puett
