    Please note that even though this is an updated version of the previous video, it still might contain some animations that are not 100% accurate as the accident occurred just 11 days ago and there is not much data available. As soon as more information is released, I’ll make yet another video with a better representation of what actually happened to the flight. Also, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones on board PIA8303. 😢

    I am a retired A-330 Captain with more then 27,000 hours and 5600 hours on the A-330. High on approach is one of the most common mistake pilots do and for several reasons, one being distracted before top of descent and delaying the approach with the result of being high and fast. The airbus 320 and 330 landing gear will not extend if the speed is above 240 knots even if the gear lever is selected down, it just wont come down. It is obvious to me that this Captain was betting on slowing the airplane down enough that eventually the gear would come down in the end and that he would be able to: SAVE FACE and not be dishonored by performing a missed approach, something he should have done. Pilots, there is no shame in performing a missed approach, in my 46 year career I performed several missed approach when at some point, it just did not look good. Please learn a valuable lesson here and take your passengers to port, late maybe, but alive. Capt. Pierre Andre Mercier, Saudi Arabian Airlines (retired).

    • @DeepChillWolf
      @DeepChillWolf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      @@imrank5002 While I do agree with your statement, I believe the plane should be able to detect if it is over water and not deploy the gears. Sometimes, as the case with US Airways 1549, ditching might need to occur. Lowering the gear during a water ditching will cause the plane to break up. Possibly another option could be to override the system, even though that might give the possibility for pilot error.

Honestly, I tend to agree with some of the other comments here that presume the pilot actually was *aware* of the alarm going off and just opted to ignore it out of over-confidence--perhaps thinking it was sounding because of a speed / altitude issue (will it do that?) rather than a gear issue.

    The gear won't come down at that high a speed. Remember, with the modern fly-by-wire aircraft such as the Airbus and the Boeings, it's like driving a BMW or a Mercedes, they will literally not tolerate "stupid". The aircraft knows the correct flight speed for a particular altitude at a particular airport based on the ILS glide-slope. It simply won't let you drop the gear if you're not inside the correct parameters.
    The beep-beep-beep is the aircraft saying: "Hey, Dopey, you're too hot. I'm not putting the gear down".

      how about a flashing sign or voice that literally shouts LANDING GEAR NOT DOWN or blocking the actual lever. the people who design these planes are as dumb as the ones who fly them. How about a warning NOT TO ATTEMPT LANDING in the first place? lets face it if this plane was not trying to be clever it would have resulted in a rough landing and perhaps overrunning the runway and in worst case damage way less than the damage resulting in the 'clever' plane 'forcing' its stupid occupants to continue their stupidity. Another reason why such a 'clever' automated intervention is dangerous is because what if other circumstance create a situation in which the plane's speed is not controllable (there have been such incidents) so now the plane wants to add insult to injury by preventing the crew from at least attempting to land the stricken plane at higher speed? If they had kept the gear retracted after the go-around, the lower drag might have been enough for a second belly landing on the runway rather than a gear down crash short of the runway.

    • @blumac9801
      @blumac9801 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gary Zhang they’re called speed brakes btw... and speed brakes do not deploy (on the Airbus A320) if the aircraft is not fully configured correctly, eg: landing gear down and flaps full. The reverse thrusters also automatically activate the speed brakes. In this case the reversers were not activated. Therefore the speed brakes did not deploy in the first place. In the event that the speed brakes somehow were deployed, then yes, once the aircraft thrust hits TOGA then the speed brakes would automatically retract.

      Thanks for the comments on the air brake deployment. It was my speculation that it was on. In other air accidents there were few cases a plane configured for landing failed to fly high enough to avoid (unexpected) obstacles due to air brake being still engaged.

    In my view it was that decisive moment when the ATC had the option of denying landing clearance or revoking IFR due to multiple altitude and speed violations by the pilot. Why did such experience pilots resort to carrying out these violations when they should have notified the ATC of an emergency situation in the cockpit (if there was any) or perhaps gone for a missed approach as rightly pointed out by the veteran Captain Pierre Mercier of Saudi Airline. As a Pakistani, I will say that PIA pilots are always lacking in training many of the aircraft of PIA have crashed due to Pilot Error. These pilots are there to handle a situation like this one that is what being a pilot means. I even have a story of a person who was onboard flight 8303, it was a man who's job VISA for US was rejected many times and when he finally got his VISA he straight up went to Doha and then to US was his expected flight, while the Pakistani people in the airport accepted his VISA and sent the man to Doha the people in Doha said that no one except American nationals can go to US according to the latest US law. Then the man had to go to Karachi, Pakistan again so demanded a flight but due to the current pandemic there was no flight except one which was a cargo flight to Lahore, Pakistan so luckily he got into the flight and was in Lahore. Now his family and everyone were in Karachi so he had to go there so then he boarded flight 8303 and then you know what happend. My condolences to his family. I have two more stories on the people who boarded flight 8303 if you want those stories comment down below. Likes are appreciated.

    The preliminary report was released on 5/22/20 and the crew screwed the pooch, end of story. The flight crew were talking about COVID during the approach and not following the sterile cockpit protocol. They lowered the landing gear at 9,780' AGL and above the 240 kt limit. What gets really bad is at 5 miles from the runway at 1,740' AGL, they RAISED the landing gear, retracted the speed brakes. At 500' the FDR shows landing gear retracted, flaps at configuration 3 (only thing correct), airspeed 220 kts IAS (should be 125 -145 kts) and a decent rate of 2,000 ft/min. The over-speed waring, landing gear not down warning and ground proximity were ALL ignored.

If the gear was to come down when the aircraft was travelling at too high a speed then the forces caused by the air hitting the gear could cause it to break off. The gear then automatically deployed when the speed was reduced

    As a Pakistani watching this these people died in a holy month and right before the joyous holiday of Eid. They were so close to home and there were 2 survivors who said that it didn't even feel like the plane was going to crash. It was all so sudden. And since this happened during the lockdown a lot of our domestic flights had been suspended. They had recently opened up again. Which means that a lot of people had been stuck and finally they got flights to go home and they met this fate. They were so close and yet... May God bless them in heaven. It was heartbreaking the day this happened. As well as the people on the plane...other people on the ground and their homes were destroyed as well. I will say this. It's not just the pilots fault. Most of PIAs planes are faulty and this particular plane had not been maintained since November 2019. There was even an international flight with this airline. They had to have an emergency landing because the doors would not closed..

      I am sorry the people of Pakistan suffered such a horrible loss, but the preliminary evidence of gross negligence by the captain is overwhelming. Condolences to the families of all the souls that perished -- they should all be alive right now.

      There was no fault with the plane, just an inferior arrogant pilot.

      they would have crashed that too, taking a curve at 120km/h while being "confident"

    This is one of the most unbelievable incidents I can recall. It's almost beyond all comprehension that such an experienced captain could have made so many mistakes, and also that the first officer completely failed to properly monitor the flight instruments. Without meaning to pre-judge the investigations it would seem that PIA might have some serious issues with crew training.

    I mean .....how could the pilots ....ignore the "GEAR TOO LOW" Warning???!!!!! And why did they evem execute the landing at 181 knots??!!!!!

    • @kevmed64
      @kevmed64 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It could be possible that the audible warning sounds similar for other types of faults? Such as over-speed approach, or steep descent rate? And the apparently overly confident and/or deranged pilot ignored the warning assuming it was for something other than the landing gear?

      Incompetent?
      All of the above?

      I agree. That seems absolutely impossible, that aural warning it's too much an intrusive sound. There is something we simply don't know yet.

      @@kevmed64 " too low gear " can only mean one thing... Your gear is not down at a very low altitude so it is impossible that the pilots got it mixed up

    I remember this crash..an Ex-Colleague was travelling with his family (his wife and sons had returned from London to Lahore after being stuck there for a year due to COVID). He went to pick them up from Lahore, unfortunately no one survived. Mr. Arif Iqbal Faruqi lost his wife and children. He is still fighting the case against the aviation authorities.
