It was clear they wanted to bait him into a reaction, Cummins is just so chilled. Too bad the Bairstow dismissal overshadowed other parts of the game. Smith record tying 100, Lyon potential career ending injury, Duckett's two near century innings, new guy Tongue who took big wickets etc. If Starc's catch was upheld as out, England would be 5 down near end on Day 4, the results could have gone a different route already. Decisions were decided by umpires.
At first I thought the Bairstow dismissal was very poor by Australia. But I watched it again and Carey catches the ball and throws all in one action, there's no pause. That would be very different if he waited for Bairstow to walk out of his crease and then throw the ball.
Irony is nobody is noticing it. Thats how you get out in stumping, you will leave your crease and smart keeper bails you off. Only cricket fans know that it was out logically, tactically.
As an Englishman I'd 100% agree. Had Bairstow paused for like 5- 10 seconds before moving out of the crease then wouldn't have been given but as he scraped his foot on the crease line (almost signifying that he was about to walk on ((bat in off hand)) then I dont see why Carey should be penalised in any way! I've watched it back a few times and whilst it's a soft dismissal it should definitely have been given out as per on field decision
@@paulgalley131 No body is saying that technically it is not out. It is whether to claim a victory in this manner is bad sportsmanship. Like a ManKad or bowling along the ground to prevent the 6 to win. Another Aussie btw...Greg Chappel 1981.
Bairstow started walking practically before it even got to Carey’s glove because the ball bounced low and hit twice. That’s on Jonny. He has to be aware of where the ball is and whether the keeper has tossed it and the umpire has called over. Lazy cricket from YJB.

I think the Starc catch and Bairstow stumping levelled each other out. Both were bizarre brain fades. You don't brace yourself from landing with the ball and you don't walk out of the crease before the ball is definitely dead. England fan here but let's be fair, it took an extraordinary effort from one-man show Stokes to get us anywhere near Australia. That is without Nathan Lyon on a five day pitch and with home advantage. Stokes needs backing up from his team (and the disgraceful MCC members who have embarrassed us all) and that starts with checking where the bloody ball is before leaving your crease!
Yeah mate, as an Aussie fan, I can’t believe anyone would try to defend Mitchell Starc’s “catch” as legit. Yes he caught it but was obviously not fully under control of the ball and his own movement, so clearly not out. Same with Bairstow’s brain fade. Rules is rules and out is out. Too many England fans forgetting Bairstow tried it on Aussie batters, the difference being Carey was good enough to hit the stumps! I doubt Stokes would have rescinded an appeal is Bairstow had been successful. Another stunning knock from Stokes though, he is a fighter.

@@johnbohin3985 oh, so what about Bairstow trying the same tactic on Labuschagne earlier???? What’s good for the goose is good fro the gander!!! Grüße aus Australien.
Bairstow only has himself to blame. Carey didn't wait for him to step out of his ground, he threw it when Bairstow was still in his ground - which means he was being observant about what Bairstow was doing previously. He took a chance and it paid off. If Bairstow had waited for the umpire to call for the over, he wouldn't have got out. Foolishness from Bairstow, intelligence from Carey and Australia.
@@geoffpoole483 Interesting, maybe we should give the umpires a whistle, so they can indicate when the ball is dead. Personally, I think it was a lack of concentration by Bairstow, and a perfectly legitimate dismissal.
The problem is that when Bairstow looked up, the umpire was looking down reaching into his pocket to get the bowler's cap out. I've playing enough cricket to know what that means. The sq leg ump had already started walking. Ok they didn't call "Over", but if all of your body language points towards it being over, then the umps need to take responsibility here I dont blame Carey for having a crack either.

My favorite captain and what a cricketer he is. Australia is going to win both ashes and WC also. This is an outrageous press meet as none of the reporters were praised the victory. They’ve been asking constantly one question in various ways but Cummins handled it very well.
@blakekeane5507Trying to shame him? How does anyone shame a person who is still denying any knowledge of ball tampering? Because it is obviously the batsman in a cricket team who handle the ball and benefit from sandpaper being applied? Yeah right 😂
He obviously needed to explain his thinking about his decision regarding that incident. Therefore, questions had to be asked. I think Cummins is a decent chap, but he is very inexperienced as a captain imo.

Considering those rip snorting deliveries that Starc and Cummins produced with the new ball, there’s no way England are going to want a proper bowler’s wicket. Despite having one of the all time great pace bowling pairs in their own team….
Great interview. Pat's turning into quite the statesman. I laughed when he said in response to the mankad and underarm suggestion.."I dunno, we'll see how the pitches are". Brilliant.

Damn good work by Carey. You see a lot of attempts at those stumpings, but rarely does a test batsman just wander off like that. He's having a magnificent series so far....flawless glovework. Thought Cummins was excellent with the press. A few moronic members likely had a few to many drinks mixed with disappointment. Didnt ruin anything....just very very embarassing for the MCC.
Carey, as you probably know comes from a long list of shithousery Aussie wicket keepers, so after hitting bairstows stumps ( fantastic glove-work by the way) then proceeds to jump about all exited with all of his teammates like they’ve just won the lottery. So from being a bit stupid and not realising that behind him the aforementioned sneaky Aussie wicket keeper was ALWAYS on the lookout for a bit of shithousery ( second nature for a Aussie wicket keeper) loses his wicket. And if Pat Cummins had any sense of fair play and been a big enough man in front of millions of people watching and called bairstow back he would surely had been a true human being in front of so many people. This is not sour grapes, it’s just with sports almost morally bankrupt people need to see something honest about it. But winning is everything to a great deal of people and morality can go f*ck itself
Carey didnt wait til bairstow left the crease, he threw it immediately, that should tell u how fast bairstow left his crease. Stay in til ball is dead. Simple.
Bairstow had time to mark his crease before leaving it. It was a pre meditated plan by Carey based on Bairstows history. To me a stumping is an act of skill where a bowler deceives a batsman. Bairstow thought the over was finished so for me this is the new Mankad.
@@JonKonDrums it's nothing to do with the legality it's the ethics. Bairstow was not trying to score or take a run in my view it's the same as a Mankad and not in the spirit of the game.

England have lost both tests through poor tactics and selection. Bairstow dropping catches in the first test and giving his wicket away twice in the second test., although he did play very well batting in the first test. Foakes must be included. Baistow to open with Duckett ? Crawley is not going to conquer this attack. Wood selected for pace, Robinson and Anderson dropped. Ideal conditions for Anderson at Lords but did not deliver. Is it the Duke ball ? The main difference seems to be the ability of the Australians to adapt. Restrained opening partnership from Warner and Kwarja when some swing was there. Class act from Cummings. And England batsmen taking on the short ball and getting out.
Well for a a start the Aussies are the favourites to win the ashes so England strutting around expecting to win is a nonsense. Second, the aussies were very lucky in the first test (England in total control) and we all know what the aussies had to do to win the second test. They would have lost if they had done the honourable thing but as we all know 'honourable' and 'aussies' don't belong in the same sentence. Third test showed that England are the better side.
What a wicket keeper Carrey is, He is a great asset to this team. If the same stumping had been done by baristow/Dhoni then everyone would’ve praised them to the core.

It's wild that this has turned into any sort of issue, when Bairstow literally did the exact same thing, not just in the past, but in the exact same game. He tried to stump Marnus in an earlier innings the exact same way but missed the stumps. Cricket fans are wild sometimes.
He’s a cheating cunt who wants banning. Got away with the ball tampering stuff in 2019, let his teammates take all the blame and hasn’t brought Bairstow back today.
It’s hilarious that Brendon McCullum had plenty to say, then over the next few hours not one, but two videos appeared of him doing exactly the same thing to Murali and an English player Paul Collingwood and how many times Bairdstow himself tried the same tactic against Smith and Labuschagne in the last few innings.
At first, I was angry at Carey. Then after watching the replay many times ,I realised that Carey threw the ball as soon as he collected it.I think Bairstow should have waited a little longer or made sure the ball is dead before moving.
Anyone that accuses Carey of cheating is a degenerate. He did not even reset before throwing the ball, in fact Bairstow was still in his crease. It only looks funny because hes stumped him off a fast bowler. Smart play and tactics by Carey who has kept superbly the whole series. The rules of the game were good enough for the barmy army yesterday but suddenly not today? funny that. 2-0.
Agreed. I think it's an important fact to note that Carey instinctively throws the ball towards the stumps, while Bairstow is actually still in his crease. Bairstow walks out of his crease and well.... you're out...
Does ‘spirit of cricket’ also include walking back to the dressing room once you’re given out without having a sook? I think a big part of the concept is accepting the decision and moving on - goes both ways!
Every keeper at every level of cricket is on the look out for a Batsman that wonders out of their crease regularly like Bairstow was, You have a ping and leave it to the umpires. Ollie Pope did it against NZ.
The press nowadays are so provocative - there were more questions about the behavior of the MCC and 'spirit of fair play' than how well Stokes entertained the crowd and how well the Australians outwitted the English batters to secure the win in the end !
It was out , I remember when Ian Bell was run out and was complaining against India , everyone said he was run out against India , Dhoni later called back Ian Bell , players cannot be naïve , this is cricket .

England be like: "I remember in 2023 we were playing against Australia and it was 0-2 in the Ashes and someone in the changeroom said: "Guys if you think we are good, let's prove it now, we can win the next 3 games and make it 3-2"" "did we comeback?" "of course not. We went 0-5"
Australia be like: I remember in 2023 we were playing England and it was 1-0. The pressure was intense. So intense that I lost all thought of sportmanship. I said "Guys, I'm not sure we can beat them normally so has anyone got any ideas? Not you Warner and put that sandpaper down. I mean ones that aren't cheating. Anyone? ...anyone? Ah well." "did we throw away our reputation?" "Of course not, our reputation was in the gutter after the sandpaper cheating anyway."
I think the entire cricketing world outside of England is clear that it’s in fact England’s reaction to their own error that is the poor show of sportsmanship
The majority of the cricketing world in England knows this! Every Englishman I've spoken to knows there's nothing controversial about it! The reaction is from the media and the idiotic MCC members.
Pat, you are a great representative of this great country. Keep going. You are a champion in a champion team. And that includes that wickedly good keeper.

Cool guy and excellently handled. Very impressed with his maturity. Field placings and tactics in pressure situations is what was a bit frustrating to watch.
Haha.. love the line “ depends on how flat the wickets get”… he answered that question beautifully.
How respectfully and calmly he answered all the questions even most of them weren't about the performance and actual game that played for full 5 days.

And no congrats on the win.🤷♂️
The English media are utterly shameless, but everyone knows that and expects no less.
Pat was obviously ready for them because he gave them nothing.
@@malcolmrickarby2313 8:35?
At first I thought the Bairstow dismissal was very poor by Australia. But I watched it again and Carey catches the ball and throws all in one action, there's no pause. That would be very different if he waited for Bairstow to walk out of his crease and then throw the ball.
Exactly!!

Friendly questions by friendly Australian journalist. Great!
Totally agree. Passive aggressive questions from these reporters and Pat handled them with dignity and wit!
Finally an English cricket fan that isn't blindly partisan.
Nice call, A real cricket fan...bravo

He took a chance and it paid off. If Bairstow had waited for the umpire to call for the over, he wouldn't have got out. Foolishness from Bairstow, intelligence from Carey and Australia.
Just as in football, when even if you think an opposition player is offside players must play to the whistle.
@@geoffpoole483 Interesting, maybe we should give the umpires a whistle, so they can indicate when the ball is dead. Personally, I think it was a lack of concentration by Bairstow, and a perfectly legitimate dismissal.

Bairstow did it to Marnus as well but he couldn’t hit the stumps
The problem is that when Bairstow looked up, the umpire was looking down reaching into his pocket to get the bowler's cap out. I've playing enough cricket to know what that means. The sq leg ump had already started walking.
The difference between the two teams might be the keepers themselves.
Carey, as you probably know comes from a long list of shithousery Aussie wicket keepers, so after hitting bairstows stumps ( fantastic glove-work by the way)
then proceeds to jump about all exited with all of his teammates like they’ve just won the lottery.

Did Ben Stokes concede that Starc’s catch was fair. No. He happily accepted the umpires decisions and the rules were accordingly applied.
The starc catch was nothing to do with a deliberate decision by the England team. The bairstow incident was a deliberate decision by Carey - and could have been resolved by proper leadership by the Australian captain, who chose not to withdraw the appeal. Don't use whataboutisms. Bairstow was out according to the rules - but Australia had a chance to redeem some of their tarnished image.
@@davidgaskin5417 so you’re ok with Bairstow attempting the same “stumping” dismissal two days earlier against Labuschangne? Or are you conveniently choosing to ignore that. The only difference was Bairstow missed the stumps. Hypocrite
@@windyhillbomber So, here we are again...whataboutism. I did not see bairstow do this, so can't comment until I see the footage. And I also stated that Bairstow was out - I am questioning whether Cummins could have done a very sporting withdraw of the decision, and really taken the moral high ground.
@@davidgaskin5417 perhaps you should educate yourself then before you go making comments? England have no right to question Australia's morals when they were literally attempting the same thing days before.

it's in the spirit of the game to not let your opponents get away with carelessness. A brain fade moment for Bairstow. He's ofcourse in disbelief in the moment but deep down he knows he was in the wrong (although he'd never admit) being a wicketkeeper himself.
Win at any cost or by any means is pathetic mind set and its ugly. This mentality led the "ugly Aussies" to the infamous Sandpapergate
They cannot go on behaving like a bunch of Dingoes.
The Aussie cricketers should be body searched every day of play before they take the filedl, just in case
I agree. The whole concept of a five day match is to stay focused and exploit any momentary lapse in your opponent. A loose shot, a loose ball, dropped catch, or wandering out of your bloody crease before the umpire calls it! Spirit of the game is to respect the umpire and not go for a wander when you feel like it.

Carey was tactically aware. What's wrong in what he did? We can't say spirit of the game if a player fails to be aware of their surroundings. Bairstow must look at himself first before saying he was "cheated out".
I'm English and I'm really annoyed with the reaction to this. Pure foolishness from Bairstow, he got caught out by a keeper who had been watching his behaviour and capitalised on it. Carey did not cheat in any sense of the word.

To be fair England need to put Mark Wood in for Pace factor was very good decision for Australia to choose Starc especially over Boland and it's not like Boland has been playing Bad they just realized from the first test they might need some extra pace. Tbf either drop Anderson(although he is great he has been struggling) Wood with pace would be a good option. This is just me saying because the England Bowlers struggled after a while bowling those short deliveries consistently and they not used to that.

I guess it’s the difference between winning and losing a hard fought test match. A calm and considered Cummings and a petulant Stokes. Given Stokes’ past behaviour on and off the field there is no way he would have reversed the Umpires decision.

Anyone that accuses Carey of cheating is a degenerate. He did not even reset before throwing the ball, in fact Bairstow was still in his crease. The rules of the game were good enough for the barmy army yesterday but suddenly not today? funny that. 2-0.
