Similar to Little Hope, in Until Dawn if you interact with the arm that moves back and forth in the mines, it triggers a trap that steals your finger. You can either break your machete freeing your fingers, or keep your machete by cutting off your fingers. If you want to keep your fingers and your machete, it's best to not interact with the arm at all. The totem did warn you, after all. This happens at various points in the game. When you investigate a strange noise, you can survive by ignoring the lock in the cave and traversing a passage back to your friends while picking up a totem. If you unlock that caged area, you're dead for not listening to all the obvious foreshadowing, you really should know better. Several totems depict deaths here as you can leave a second character behind and no matter which way he goes, it seems he dies. He has an emotional moment finding your corpse if you are purposefully trying to die by going the same way, though.
I do have to challenge that number one option. You absolutely should pick up the Cursed Belt and Death Necklace in Dragon Quest 1. Don't use them, just take them to a shop and sell them. The necklace in particular sells for a really good chunk of change, and grinding for money in Dragon Quest is one of the most annoying parts of the game, even if the Golden Golems are easier to kill than Metal Slimes.

Three items I would add: The Auditory Cape in Assassin's Creed 2: Raises notoriety to 100% when worn, and guards attack you on sight. So rare people will kill to get it, and the aggro of everyone raises to the point they attack you on sight until you get rid of it. The Golden Claws in Dragon Warrior 3:. Found in the Pyramid, they carry the Pharoh's curse, and as long as you have or wear them you will be attacked for every step you take, until you either sell or drop them. However, they have +55 power, and, if you can make it to a town, you can sell them for 11,250 gold.

The Jarrin Root in Elder Scrolls game. Will kill you if eaten. Of course, typically, you eat ingredients to find what they do, and what they can be used to make. It's pretty much used to make the strongest poison in the game.
Jarrin root doesn't count. Its a quest item, you don't pick it up, it is given to you as part of a Dark Brotherhood quest by Astrid. You are supposed to use it to make a poison for the quest to kill the emperor's body double. You need the quest, if you intend in finishing the Dark Brotherhood story.
Can't forget about the notes from the _Corpse Party_ games; most notes are relatively harmless, but there's a certain set of five notes per chapter that when read in sequence, brings about that chapter's Darkening ending (the one from the first game, chapter two... yikes, Wrong End is an understatement.)
On the subject of Metal Gear, in the first game there's the transponder planted in your inventory after escaping from jail, which puts the enemies permanently on alert until you discard it.
Honorable mention: The Red Jewel - Uninvited (NES). Kills you in several actions if you pick it up and not throw it away. A way to compensate the time limit in the original game.
The Unstable Ordnance from Space Quest IV also like that. In the "Point and Click" Adventure game genre where the first prime rule pick everything you can. It was another time that would kill you if you had it at a certain point in the game
There's a weapon for Ness in Earthbound called the Casey Bat that you can find late in the game. It's his strongest weapon in the game but it has less than a 30% hit rate, meaning his basic attack has worse odds than a coin flip of landing a hit. You're better off using a weaker bat- his late-game luck nets enough critical hits to make up for it.
NES' Faxanadu has a Pendant item that is supposed to double your attack power, but a coding mistake saw it halve your attack power instead. This is right next to the end of the game, just at a key point you do NOT need a power reduction...
Dues Ex: Human Revolution. The Bio Chip where you get the emergency upgrade you "need" to stop the "glitches", which it does. But later in your fight with Namir ,Zhao Yun Ru will activate the kill switch, nuking all of your Augs. This will make the Namir much harder. If you don't get the chip,. he is a piece of cake.
Can’t forget about the shield from ghosts and goblins. You would think it would do you some good, but it keeps you from being able to attack, and that’s a skill you most definitely need in that game.

Really if you consider the lore, it's not at all surprising, since the god of trickery and lies is the one who gives you the axe.
West of loathing has a dark hat you can get in the beginning that permanently makes the game harder, that’s definitely one to avoid unless that was your plan.
The Gold Watch, The Witch's House. This can be found in the dark statue maze under a table. If you collect it, you have a nice shiny watch. And it comes with a bonus! If you take ONE step away from the table, you also gain a nice tight noose wrapped around your neck! Yeah, the item is a red herring. If you use it, you instantly die, no way to escape it. Also, to expand on that Little Hope one, it can also get your arrested. Without the gun, when you see a demon behind the only other person you find in Little Hope, you can only warn him about the danger or run away. WITH the gun, you'll take aim and can possibly fire, to which the guy will think you're a psycho and you'll be locked into the arrested ending as a result.
Also from The Witch's House, the yellow butterfly. The only difference is you are actually warned against taking it where as the watch doesn't warn you
The D&D arcade game Shadows over Mystara had a cursed sword in it that would damage you about 25% of the time you used it. But if you were willing to pump enough quarters in to keep reviving yourself, after I think 255 uses the curse would break and it would turn into the Sword of Legend, the most powerful sword in the game. In the Steam version it's a lot more feasible to obtain, but back when we actually had to put money into the machine, it was a very useless weapon. Nobody's gonna spend like $3 on continues just to get a weapon that only lasts until the end of your game.
Another item for the list are any "green" items in Shadowgate 64. There are two different important rooms where you can collect bottles of magic potions of different colors and a set of magic rings with different colored gemstones. Among both sets is a green potion and a green ring. What do they have in common? Both kill you instantly. All the other potions and rings provide important benefits later in the game like the blue ring which reverses all your controls, seemingly useless at first, until later when you have to navigate a magic maze that reverses your controls and you can don the blue ring to set things right. But the green items? Not so much. First few playthroughs I grabbed them, thinking that I could use the potion to poison someone for a sidequest or trick someone into wearing the green ring but neither ever happened. Both are completely useless to you and only add an additional risk of killing yourself if you accidentally select them in your inventory.
Well the Mackerel isn't a trick since you need it to 100% the game as it provides on one the 26 endings, but I guess I was "tricked" into playing NieR: Automata to its fullest.
Also you should do "items the game punishes you for using." For this I'd say the frog in witches house. In one of the many rooms there's a large python that eats you if you enter the room. However if you have the frog enter first the python will eat him instead. This allows you to move on. However later in the game you'll come across tadpoles and if you interact with them before you drain the water they'll kill you for killing their dad. The worst part is in order to progress you have to let the python eat the frog
I remember in Final Fantasy 12 there were a series of treasure chests that if you opened would prevent you from getting the best weapon in the game later on. That damn mechanic had me paranoid to open anything. I had to open the guide book and triple check any chest I opened. Fortunately it was clearly labeled in the book "Don't touch that treasure chest!"
Baldachin's Blessing has the following effects: When in Inventory, Max HP is reduced -5% When used, grants +35% physical damage negation and +50% poise for 15 seconds Also prevents stagger from attacks with damage level 0, 1, and 8 for 15 seconds so -5% hp aint a big deal though also using it removes the debuff

I had the fun in my first play through and never used it once, and Taylor was the only one that died, and it was due to me missing one qte prompt effervescent her bf was trying to save her when they were all being attacked at once and you were swapping between each character saving each other. I know that probably reads weird but whoever played know the section I'm talking about
I just want to mention the “Bane submachine gun” from borderlands 2. not only does this gun slow you down tremendously but every time you fire the damn thing, it makes a very annoying sound that makes you wanna rip your ears off.
We played the Dark Anthology series in group mode. First part : Hey we found some weapons...great....oh, we killed each other with those. Second part: Oh there is a gun, better leave it alone or we might kill each other....good choice. Third part: WHAT? They gave us full automatic weapons and grenades!?!?
It's also an amazing gun for whatever level you are when you pick it up. All you have to do is not let it bother you and its a great gun you just need to unequip between fights. It's annoying for like ten seconds if you just think about how adorable it is.
The classic "item you shouldn't pick up" is the unstable ordnance from Space Quest IV. In a genre of games that encourages you to grab anything not nailed to the floor in order to win, having a booby trapped item that causes instant death if you're still holding onto it when jumping into the next area is the ultimate d**k move.
Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous: Do NOT accept the profane's blessing of a certain powerful NPC. It might lock you out of some important stuff later.
Baldichins Blessing does have a purpose if youre playing a melee blocking build. You get it, go to a boss fight, trigger it and go. I used it constantly for boss fights on my high end and str pure melee build. That extra poise and negation can be useful. I mean ya, if you just picked it up and carried it forever without paying attention to the item text or what ot does its gonna screw you. But thats on the player, not the game
People who pick up the Baldachin’s blessing and then complain about it are idiots who don’t pay attention to the dialogue. Lady literally tells you, that if you allow her to embrace you she’ll take some of your warmth (your health) and bestow upon you her blessing. And so long as you carry it she will be able to keep your warmth with her. Y’all need to pay attention and use the head attached to your neck and not the one on your waist.
I feel that I was the only one who didn't take the gun in Little Hope. Just because of what happens in Man of Medan when the girl kills the brother I was thinking something like that would happen in this game too. Called it.

In the excellent NES adventure platformer Faxanadu, you find an amulet in one of the dungeons located in the lower branches of the gigantic tree the game takes place in. This item, that cannot be sold, unequipped, or dropped, was supposed to boost your attack power but due to a programming error, it does the opposite. Long story short, play Faxanadu but don't pick up the amulet.
Ugh I'm sorry Josh but putting Baldachins blessing on here is proof ur not much of a souls or even elden ring player... the item she gives u adds poise when applied to remove said debuff... while yes u lose about 5hp u get a decent boost to poise. Not to mention hugging her helps advance her story line so its kind of a requirement... I used to love this channel but lately it seems like ur running out of stuff to speak about...
The butterfly in Witch's house. This game has a lot of items you need to pick up, but this item will cause a spider to eat you. Note there is a warning. "The spider is old and his eyesight is so poor he cannot even tell colors apart." The butterfly is the same color as your hair. Yellow. Just.. leave it there.

I literally started playing The Blair Witch game yesterday, so glad you mentioned this. However, I got to the 10th chapter before quitting so I wonder if I've already grabbed too many.
If you grab even one your getting the bad ending no matter what. But in this vid they didn't mention other stuff if you end up doing causes bad ending as well. So if you want the good ending I would recommend a walkthrough because if its your first play through your more than likely getting the bad ending because there so much that causes it.

Unless it's been patched, the Alchemist legendary rifle from Borderlands 3 should be on this list as while it's ok damage wise, the player also takes health damage when using the weapon and considering there's hundreds of better options in Borderlands 3 there's just no reason to use that gun.
This topic suggests a related one: crutch items, ones that hurt you not by debuffing you or adding negative effects, but by stunting player skill growth.
The binoculars are objectively worse to pick as a starting gift, because you can literally get that at the very beginning of the game before you even go anywhere.

Do the items in FFXII that prevent you from obtaining the Zodiac Spear count?
I think it's not so much prevention as removing one of its spawn points that's guaranteed, and the other only spawn point has a 0.1% drop rate.

You can pick it up all you want. Just never equip and fire it.
It's also an amazing gun for whatever level you are when you pick it up. All you have to do is not let it bother you and its a great gun you just need to unequip between fights. It's annoying for like ten seconds if you just think about how adorable it is.
The classic "item you shouldn't pick up" is the unstable ordnance from Space Quest IV. In a genre of games that encourages you to grab anything not nailed to the floor in order to win, having a booby trapped item that causes instant death if you're still holding onto it when jumping into the next area is the ultimate d**k move.
How about "top Co op missions" or finally in so long, best Co Op games?

Baldichins Blessing does have a purpose if youre playing a melee blocking build. You get it, go to a boss fight, trigger it and go. I used it constantly for boss fights on my high end and str pure melee build. That extra poise and negation can be useful. I mean ya, if you just picked it up and carried it forever without paying attention to the item text or what ot does its gonna screw you.
But thats on the player, not the game

Lady literally tells you, that if you allow her to embrace you she’ll take some of your warmth (your health) and bestow upon you her blessing.
And so long as you carry it she will be able to keep your warmth with her.

Ah. Good to know I was carrying that blessing from lvl10 to lvl100 (in case I might need it later) just to have it to debuff me.
In the excellent NES adventure platformer Faxanadu, you find an amulet in one of the dungeons located in the lower branches of the gigantic tree the game takes place in. This item, that cannot be sold, unequipped, or dropped, was supposed to boost your attack power but due to a programming error, it does the opposite. Long story short, play Faxanadu but don't pick up the amulet.
Ugh I'm sorry Josh but putting Baldachins blessing on here is proof ur not much of a souls or even elden ring player... the item she gives u adds poise when applied to remove said debuff... while yes u lose about 5hp u get a decent boost to poise. Not to mention hugging her helps advance her story line so its kind of a requirement... I used to love this channel but lately it seems like ur running out of stuff to speak about...

"The spider is old and his eyesight is so poor he cannot even tell colors apart." The butterfly is the same color as your hair. Yellow. Just.. leave it there.

I literally started playing The Blair Witch game yesterday, so glad you mentioned this. However, I got to the 10th chapter before quitting so I wonder if I've already grabbed too many.
If you grab even one your getting the bad ending no matter what. But in this vid they didn't mention other stuff if you end up doing causes bad ending as well. So if you want the good ending I would recommend a walkthrough because if its your first play through your more than likely getting the bad ending because there so much that causes it.

I'd add the Casey Bat from Earthbound. Great stats but you never ever hit anything with it.
Unless it's been patched, the Alchemist legendary rifle from Borderlands 3 should be on this list as while it's ok damage wise, the player also takes health damage when using the weapon and considering there's hundreds of better options in Borderlands 3 there's just no reason to use that gun.
This topic suggests a related one: crutch items, ones that hurt you not by debuffing you or adding negative effects, but by stunting player skill growth.
The Bane in Borderlands 2 -- a pretty nice prank, gun with amazing stats (for its level at least) that turns out to be completely unusable.
The binoculars are objectively worse to pick as a starting gift, because you can literally get that at the very beginning of the game before you even go anywhere.
