I'm on my 6th and last Subaru. R1S is looking like the favourite for next vehicle if a RHD ever comes here, because all the other EVs so far have such impractical form factors - sedans and stubby CUVs with insufficient cargo space.

Their prices are ridiculous compared to so many look alike that do as well and sometimes better for far less cash. At any rate, and like I said, I'm anxious to get my hands on the R1S.

I was impressed with how the Rivian pick-up prototypes performed on the Long Way Up Apple TV program. Rivian demonstrated dedication and commitment in overcoming and solving the challenges they faced on the journey, so it doesn't surprise me that they are now forging ahead with the production of three vehicle models. I am sure Long Way Up provided them and Harley Davidson (electric bikes) with an invaluable learning opportunity.

I live in Normal, IL and watched Mitsubishi take our taxes and fold. The plant sat empty for 6 years until an "unknown" company called Rivian came to town. Our city gave them all kinds of incentives to buy the old Mitsu plant. I was thinking what a Ponzi scheme this could turn out to be. Our IL Governor, Normal Mayor, and City Council went to Michigan and when asked, they said everyone was really nice. Asked if they saw a vehicle, "no, but we saw a lot of parts"!
Fast forward....looks like I was wrong and this company is alive and well in Normal, IL. Lot of activity going on out there. Buying up land all around the place.
Let's hope they continue to thrive.

If how Rivian were going to sell was covered in the report I missed it, also how they were going to manage the after sales service. The Rivian looks stylish and practical, and if performance is delivered, the manufacturing quality good and they prove to be reliable then they have themselves a winner.
Often Tesla fans treat EV competitors as the enemy, whereas the EV market needs more manufacturers, Tesla will benefit more from being top of a large pile than top of a small pile.

I am a Bolt owner and am delighted to hear of Rivian’s “adventure” oriented charging network. Arizona, like other western states, has large areas that are accessible to passenger cars but out of range of level 3 chargers. This has improved dramatically as chargers are stood up. An example is the new ChargePoint station in Kanab, Utah. This opens up southern Utah and the Arizona Strip.
On our first Road Trip, coming back from Yellowstone, we stayed and charged in St. George and had enough range to get to Cliff Dweller’s Lodge, near the Colorado, but not for the side trip to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Kanab makes it easier, but I would have to rely on a level 2 charger at Cliff Dweller’s.
I have wondered about the economics of building Level 3 stations in remote locations, but Rivian, Hummer, etc. may change that.

Yes the Tesla chargers in nowhere South of Moab, Montecillo is a great example. A good case for a Tesla but too expensive right now. The Colorado, UT crew will need to wait a few years I think. I don't see any competition between EV manufacturers as of yet and maybe for some years to come. The world is just beginning to transition from fossil fuel to electric propulsion. Therefore the market is still so huge that there's no need for them to compete against each other. As long as they will keep producing good vehicles at reasonable prices, they will sell like hot cakes. The competition is being felt by legacy auto makers who insist on producing internal combustion engine vehicles. My interests are how Rivian may impact that portion of the American pickup market, where a fully loaded Ford F150-250, a Dodge Ram or the Chevy Blazer suffer some loss of market share? This seems very possible given the picture you have outlined. Should this happen, the world oil company's could see a significant hit. More importantly, some of the larger Toyota pickups could also see a market share reduction. In such a situation this would have a devastating effect on my home market here in Australia where the last stand is being played out by the fossil fuel industry. See the fossil fuel candidate, Mathias Cormann from Australia has managed to get the job of heading up the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development).

180 kwh battery pack isn't confirmed yet. Currently, the mid-range 310-mile pack is available, with the announcement of a longer range pack expected later this year. So the bit about the flat seats, even with the largest battery pack, may not hold true.

I like Rivian and have a deposit on the truck but doubt I will pull the trigger at least for awhile. Real pricey and awfully new to be without bugs from the start. Will be interesting to see how those headlights actually work as they might be really good illumination on the road. Now lets hope they do a better job of painting the thing than Tesla who should be ashamed of the areas they missmarket and there are less than 75 days left to production sometime in June !

It looks like Rivian will actually sell trucks this summer. They are still toys for rich people, but that's how it starts. I've never considered getting a Tesla Roadster, Model S, or Model Y, but getting a Model 3 is well within the realm of possibilities. I hope that in about 5-10 years, they'll have a model that is practical and not merely aspirational.

That being said I decided to skip an R1T as I found the diesel Jeep gladiator to meet my adventuring needs more appropriately but I’ll be buying an R1S instead. My model Y has been absolutely terrible I hope the Rivian will prove that driving an EV can mean off roading, class and RELIABILITY.

For most buyers yes, those are expensive. But have you seen the price of ICE trucks and SUVs lately? You could easily spend that much or more on one and it wouldn’t look like anything special. And I see them all over the place so obviously there is no shortage of folks who spend that much on a truck or SUV.

I worry that Rivian is expecting everything to go right throughout the year, when it is far more likely that things will go horribly wrong. Welding programs that aren't quite right, resulting in panel and structural failure, battery availability (BIG concern) and real, in field testing for production vehicles. So far, the only Rivian's that have been seen in the wild are essentially bespoke vehicles- not production- so they aren't 'real'. I fear the push to go public is based on some agreements they signed to get backing from the like of Ford and Amazon who want to recoup their investments quickly.

Rivian is doing much like Elon Musk has done in regards to his ventures.. They are not using any industry playbooks, smart!, which is why so many business and stock analyst have got things so wrong with their long and short term speculations of the company. Basically, both companies have addressed their most major concerns future challenges and roadblocks set down the road as a first immediate priority, instead of rushing to the market with a poser product just to please potential stock holders and their evaluations only to run into such issues only to see those gains quickly turn into losses. Rivian has taken advantage of what we deemed as setbacks due to covid as an advantage in addition time to not only get one vehicle up and ready for error free production but 2 additional vehicles all to debut together, one of which will serve as a most lucrative bedrock for most operations to be financially secured. A deal with amazon is Major! like truly major. Its not like Amazon is going anywhere anytime soon, like Google, its made itself a standardized practice in commerce. Even if someone creates a better shopping experience we have made Amazon a default, and its numbers in retail are felt world wide, which means its business with Rivian will also likely be world reaching . And a lot of automakers would've loved to get their hands on that one, but seeing it go not only too and electric auto manufacture startup but more notable, one that has not even sold a single vehicle out on the road, says a ton about what's happening at Rivian and the mentality of the people running the company. They could care less about the media's input, or statisticians and market analysis. They are focused on making the absolute best ev's they can with a production pipeline that revolutionary.

Great video, great product. It would be interesting to know the production projections for the 3 different vehicles. I would guess the delivery truck for Amazon will be the most profitable and therefore the most numerous. Here is where I think their business model differs from most other EV startups, go heavy with commercial vehicles as your bread and butter product. Too bad they aren’t making the new mail trucks for the US Postal Service.

Meh. I'm wondering about the demand for a Rivian. Is there really demand for 30,000 the first year and 300,000 after that? I'm not feeling it. I seriously doubt someone is going to pay almost $80k for an "adventure" vehicle and then scratch it up in the woods. I never see the high-price Lincoln Navigators or the top-of-the-line Cadillac Escalades out in the boonies. Good luck; we need the EVs and the competition but personally I'm waiting for my CT which has an exterior that doesn't scratch and dent. #300,567

For production, if not making actual batteries the cars/trucks are easier to build in total than an ice vehicle. Because of no engine/transmission/differential/fuel tanks etc. Yes it has a motor or two or is it 4, but those are simpler to build and the chassis/platform can be used on different vehicles, which is what most EV companies are doing, such as Rivian. They had a 13,000 or so test drive of two vehicles already, which should have answered any questions they had left from testing.
IOW, while their plans are ambitious, the are doable with the right people and money, something they seem to have up the wazoo.

Of course they are following Tesla’s baby steps in creating the most expensive vehicles like the S&X.. then ramp up the affordable 3&Y for the masses... which is for the average consumer..like myself.. then hopefully we can have some insight on road trip charging network on local highways..I like the specs on the Rivian but have not seen and insight on tech, infotainment, test drives??? so it leaves me in the dark on their product which cost $75k and I have been following them since 2018..good things come to those who wait as they say.

Rivian is getting production help from Ford engineers, and has been hiring huge numbers of engineers from the Big 3. Rivian won't have a problem with starting large production numbers on a flex assembly line.
Most of Tesla's problems have been from Tesla thinking they know better than companies who've been building vehicles at scale for 100+ years, only to find out that they actually don't. Rivian won't have that problem. 90%+ of an EV is exactly the same as an ICE vehicle, so skills and knowledge easily transfer.
