@@lukestoyz They found the same thing in the plug-in hybrid jeep. The normal 20+ miles of all electric was only 3.4 miles on a rough trail (granted it was gaining a lot of elevation the entire way). Which is a shame because I really like the way electric vehicles trail drive.
Excellent review. I first saw the Roubion in the Apple TV series long way up which was amazing also. Can’t wait to hear more about towing and battery life.
Rivian is legit, I’m not sold on EV’s until they figure out the infrastructure system. However I can see this selling well. Glad to see an automaker actually produced what they said they were going to produce instead of the normal short cutting they tend to do between concept and production.
Geez as a construction working we would literally love this! To bad it out prices pretty much any construction workers pay, thanks guys! Hopefully overtime they will come down in price.
Agreed. He says 75 thousand so casually. Edit: As others have said, Long-term would be better than ICE but with the unknowns of battery longevity and replacement cost.
@@Pab-B right ! How's is $75k affordable lol. Don't get me wrong love the truck and tech but I wouldn't hate one that was half the horsepower only a measly 500ish and maybe 30-40k I'd sell my truck buy one.
I don’t believe that the braking regeneration was limited due to overheating, I think it was much more likely that the battery was too full and couldn’t accept any further charge. This is common with EV‘s, especially if they are nearly fully charged.
@@darcygibbons3836 Proof that it wasn’t fully charged? I had just driven it 30 miles or something off-road, plus the engineer in the car with me at the time said it would be for thermal protection.
Would be good to get clarification. If you go down a mountain, some might be planning for regeneration the whole way. This could affect route planning. But would be good to know on a technical basis too - what's the limitation.
The appeal to me with this truck is the ability to replace my Tesla *and* my gas pickup with one vehicle that combines the best features of each. After owning the Tesla for three years I have to say there's zero doubt that *daily* driving electric is absolutely superior to gas in every way if you can charge at home. Also there's zero doubt that the pickup form factor is very versatile and useful. Having both in one vehicle would be amazing.
@@HarryKuloh No visits to gas stations. No clunky transmission, just smooth acceleration. No using brakes 95% of the time due to regen. Hills basically don't even seem to exist while driving our Tesla. Virtually zero maintenance (only a tire rotation in 3 years). Very efficient at 130MPGe (R1T is 85ish, IIRC). Heat/cool/defrost the car using my phone while still in a closed garage using power from battery or EVSE or anywhere else, out accelerate 99.99% of cars on the road (useful for when you're about to get boxed in), no panic or long lines every time there's a rush on gasoline/petrol like in the UK right now or earlier this year when the Colonial Pipeline were victims of a ransomware attack. Can sit in comfort using almost zero energy in my kids' school pickup line which is a no idle zone. Uses 100% domestic energy with no worries about giving money to people that hate us every time I fill up, no worries about my entire family dying in their sleep if I just happened to leave the car "running" in the garage (yes this has happened to people). Can charge from variety of sources if grid fails like my dual inverter generators using propane or gasoline, my whole house natural gas generator, solar at home, solar at my off grid cabin. So please, tell me one damn thing that an ICE vehicle is better at for daily driving. Just one.
This thing is amazing. I would buy one in a heartbeat. I’m more inclined to get the Ford since it starts at 40k instead of 70k but yes Tim needs to drive one.
It's worth pointing out that the price of the F-150 Lightning is comparable once you spec both vehicles similarly. Rivian just doesn't offer a stripped down version of their vehicles (yet.)
being someone who's loved F150s for a long time, i bet if / when the ford configuration tool is out for the lightning we'll find that it's a 70k or more car with the same features. They're starting at the 'FX4' and better price point. Least when I do ICE comparisons of a Ford F150 to the Rivian, the price gets real close together. That said, the F150 is bigger. I don't need that big of a truck the rivian size is perfect for me.
Very interested in seeing how it performs towing! Please make a video testing its towing capabilities, how towing affects its range, and how different weight tow loads affect performance/range. For example difference in performance/range with 20' enclosed car trailer w/4,000 Lbs car vs 18' flatbed trailer w/4,000 Lbs car vs 2-horse trailer, etc... Thanks.
Placed my reservation in February for the $67k model. The truck reviews are better than expected. Underpromise and over deliver. I’m only taking the risk because of the 6-year/60k bumper to bumper warranty and the 8-year/175k battery pack and drivetrain warranty.
Great review I am a big guy 6’5” 300 lbs. will the Rivian interior drivers room be big enough for me. No off reading but I tow my boat every once in a while Thank you
The downhill heat issues may cause problems while towing an 11,000 lb. trailer as well as reducing regeneration capability. Will it come with plug-ins for solar panels while camping?
Not really... you would just use the brakes which seem pretty well sized for braking. solar panels would not even make a dent in recharging the trucks battery if that's what you had in mind. even the 300 miles battery is huge
This was the most informative video the truck sounds amazing but I not quite ready for all electric truck for now I stay with my F-150, limited power boost
Wondaful review and a truck. These engineers thought about everything. They want to make them for all type of drivers. Either running to the groceries only or off road trips and camping drivers. Very well done !!! I am really interested. Yes, Tesla has some nice cars, but this one opened my eyes for first electric for me.
I like that you aren't a pro or anti Tesla reviewer hopefully. You seem a fan of Rivian. Great review. When you have the cybertruck, F-150, Hummer and other EV trucks to compare it will be interesting.
Living in Colorado Springs, Colorado, TFL has lost their credibility with several of their journalists who allegedly have extremely intentional biased reviews they allegedly stack against some manufactures to promote others. Total lack of journalism ethics and professionalism on all levels.
Well looks like good control and patience win again.. but is the electrical waterproof if you have been smashing around in the mountains for 10 hours in a day
I'm all for "usable" EV's. I have a reservation for the cyber truck and F150 Lightning. But... this thing that NOBODY talks about is service, repairs, how is warranty handled, availability of auto body parts and certified autobody repair facilities AND auto glass replacement availability. Lack of parts is a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE issue with EVs. Not to mention, your auto insurance will be about twice what a comparable ICE vehicle is.
They do talk about it. Right now it’s all mobile for repairs/warranty. They are not only building service centers but also certifying body shops throughout the country. They just started production, the rollout will get bigger.
Tim, I love your videos man but this guy is a great addition to your brand! Does he edit his own videos? Because if he does I can tell and me Likey! Only suggestion is to create chapters to your videos (Interior, Specs, Exterior, Towing, Etc.) so that we can jump to the section we are most interested in right away
Great review. When it comes to off road adventure cars/trucks it all comes down to ability and range. I think 'ability' is the easy task, going into the mountains for a week seems the harder task.
If you plan the mileage of your trip where would the concern be? Range is range. The only issue I could see is extremely cold weather which may affect the battery pack.
To say that $5000 for the "camp kitchen" is "so worth it" seems like a bit of a stretch. I mean I think it's a really slick piece of engineering, but it ultimately doesn't really do anything that you can't do with a $20 Coleman stove and a jug. I still want one, though...
Everything in life is like this. You can buy a leather couch for $1000 and I’m sure someone has paid 50,000 dollars for a couch. You can fish with a Walmart fly rod for 35 bucks or an Orvis for $1000. It’s life, have it all in a compact top of the line package for 5 k or tote your Coleman stove, 10 cans of propane, pots, pans, utensils and plates and enjoy that. Not everyone is broke.
Since it is a pick up truck you might talk about load capacity or dimensions of the truck bed or tongue weight for towing. Is a receiver hitch standard. What kind of frame does it have. Not everyone is going to tailgate and tent camp with it.
I doubt it would do much to improve range. Solar panels have been tried for years on cars with limited success. The weight of them makes it hard to offset the range improvement.
Really appreciate all of the thought that went into this truck. I just wish it didn't have the goofy "smiley face" headlights. Hard to take it as a tough truck when it looks like a 70's "Have a nice day" poster from the front.
I don't think it's trying to be a "tough truck" though and I actually think it's kind of genius. I don't think EV drivetrains are developed enough to compete with traditional pickups on capability just yet, so instead they targeted a luxury lifestyle truck and I think it'll do well. It's not trying to be tougher or more capable than Chevy/Ford/Ram pickups, it's just designed to do this adventure lifestyle well.
In the reviews of the R1T, some of the nicer things I have been called are "rich puke", "techno weenie", "girly man", "outdoor freak", "idiot", and "liar'. Maybe we could all use a smiley face from a truck with have nice day headlights.
Starting to consider one of these over the Tesla...with the $7,500 incentive it comes to about the same price as the model Y after the latest price hikes.
Fantastic video. Thanks for sharing. You mentioned 34inch tires. On the truck you drove, is that matted to the 22inch wheels. I ask because I have that in my preorder and trying o decide which way to go?
So there are three tire and wheel options. I tested the 20-inch wheels with the off-road tires. The standard wheel is a 21-inch with eco-friendly tires (that’s how you get the 314 miles of range). The other upgrade is the 22-inch wheels with the grippier on-road tires that give better performance but worse range. The dynamics engineer for the R1T said he prefers the 20-inch with off-road tires even on-road, for whatever that’s worth.
The Rivian definitely stands out, but it seems overkill to control EVERYTHING form the middle screen. I would still rather have a tactile knob for volume control that I can adjust without taking my eyes off the road. Some things don't need "improving". Is there a glove box to throw some stuff in? Can the back passengers turn on their seat heaters without having to ask the driver to turn them on? These are trivial issues considering the technology, and I would definitely by one if I had the money, but for now I think I'll buy their stock.
So If regen breaking turns off on a long down hill run while towing and all you are left with are the service brakes. You could be in for a scary ride once the service breaks start to overheat.
They currently dispatch service to your home or work. They are building out a network of service centers in major cities but it will take years to reach me so I will get concierge service for a while.
Great review. There was a bit though where you stayed talking about the buttons & what they do, but the video went straight to Rivian stock footage showing close ups of the seats. Don't know what the story is there but it was bloody annoying. Anywho, can't wait till we see these in Australia.
I wonder how the parking space is laid out for charging. Pull through car + trailer spaces would be good. It would suck to have to unhook a trailer, go park in the charging spot, go wait by your boat/camper/trailer so no one messes with it, then have to go get your truck and hook your trailer up again. Going on a long trip where you had to drop and re-hook your trailer every 5 hours could get old quick.
Its brand new but with inflation I wouldnt expect to be saying $67k is a lot of money for a brand new loaded truck that much longer regardless. My last F150 lariat sport stickered at $63k and imo this thing is much nicer.
Very informative. Felt a little too positive to me. Just like you were looking for positives. Like the kitchen is awfully niche just to throw in a bunch of trucks. I'm sure most people will skip that. I chuckled when you mentioned that the silent electric motors will somehow help hunters. But overall it was great info. Just wish it felt a little less like you were trying to sell it. Thanks for sharing.
@@Pickuptrucktalk Gas engines don't generate high voltages. An ICE alternator maybe generates 15v, but EVs can have inverters/converters generating over 400v and can certainly function while in the water. So I ask again, what happens to these systems in deep flooding water? Do you end up like a toaster in the bathtub? Or do the high voltage systems sense their in water and shut off?
@@livinganewdream3682 Come to think of it, if you put it in deep flooding water, an EV might actually be the better solution over an ICE which would suck in the water into the engine causing massive damage. The battery and wiring is all sealed for water intrusion. You actually might be able to simply drive the BEV out of the deep flooding since you wouldn’t have an engine damage concerns. As far as the toaster in the bathtub thought, I’m not sure how that would apply. In EV cars, when it is submerged in water and some water gets into the electrical system, it trips internal breakers killing the power immediately.
@@Pickuptrucktalk Good to know. I'm an EE myself having designed similar power systems to that used in EVs and have wondered what the engineers have done with this topic regards to high voltage systems in water and that they've thought about this.

The the offroad range is usually terrible, as TFL found out on a Tesla
@@lukestoyz maybe you do it for just a quick trail. You have 300 miles of range. Maybe 5 miles of trail burns (lets go with extreme) 75 miles of range. You still got 225 miles of range. Take out the milage to reach the trail and to get back home. I think you'll still have like at least 20 miles remaining.
@@lukestoyz They found the same thing in the plug-in hybrid jeep. The normal 20+ miles of all electric was only 3.4 miles on a rough trail (granted it was gaining a lot of elevation the entire way). Which is a shame because I really like the way electric vehicles trail drive.
@@lukestoyz dw, JerryRigEverything was showing that a 5 hour rough trail only took 20% of the battery.
Excellent review. I first saw the Roubion in the Apple TV series long way up which was amazing also. Can’t wait to hear more about towing and battery life.
Rivian
Rivian is legit, I’m not sold on EV’s until they figure out the infrastructure system. However I can see this selling well. Glad to see an automaker actually produced what they said they were going to produce instead of the normal short cutting they tend to do between concept and production.
You can charge at your house
Geez as a construction working we would literally love this! To bad it out prices pretty much any construction workers pay, thanks guys! Hopefully overtime they will come down in price.
I really want to see a more bare bones one made. Solid roof, no glass, no heated and cooled seats. Drop some of the luxury and the price.
Or it would be alot more feasible anyways.
With my 2018 F150 I’m spending about $250 in gas each week it would literally be cheaper for me to buy a fully loaded Rivian R1T.
That's a lot of gas!
Yes Tim, they are called superusers, 10% of drivers use around 33% of the gasoline in light duty vehicles
@@phileasler5401 super as in like it’s a super power??
I don’t believe that the braking regeneration was limited due to overheating, I think it was much more likely that the battery was too full and couldn’t accept any further charge. This is common with EV‘s, especially if they are nearly fully charged.
It wasn’t fully charged. It was thermal regulation of the electric motors or the battery. The user-facing message doesn’t differentiate between them.
@@jlgolson do you have proof of this?
@@darcygibbons3836 Proof that it wasn’t fully charged? I had just driven it 30 miles or something off-road, plus the engineer in the car with me at the time said it would be for thermal protection.
@@jlgolson After thinking about this it seems to me that the thermal regulation was due to the battery being too cold not too hot.
Would be good to get clarification. If you go down a mountain, some might be planning for regeneration the whole way. This could affect route planning. But would be good to know on a technical basis too - what's the limitation.
Can’t wait for Rivian to come to the UK.
Electric superior how? Electric inferior
Just one.
A thorough and useful review! Thanks very much.
This thing is amazing. I would buy one in a heartbeat. I’m more inclined to get the Ford since it starts at 40k instead of 70k but yes Tim needs to drive one.
You can’t buy the $40k Ford unless you buy commercial fleet. I believe the cheapest consumer is $53k?
@@ClayMcDonald exactly luxury is alot different than work truck without power windows ect....
I think I saw that the upper range on the Lightning is $95,000, per the Ford website.
Looks beautiful. Much better then a cyber-triangle.
Thanks.
its just amazing how they can get so much right on the first go
Excellent presentation . . . and it sounds like a helluva truck!
Placed my reservation in February for the $67k model. The truck reviews are better than expected. Underpromise and over deliver. I’m only taking the risk because of the 6-year/60k bumper to bumper warranty and the 8-year/175k battery pack and drivetrain warranty.
Few days ago, I saw a car carrier filled with Rivians.
Great review I am a big guy 6’5” 300 lbs. will the Rivian interior drivers room be big enough for me. No off reading but I tow my boat every once in a while Thank you
Great video. Tell Tim to buy one
Best video out there on the new Rivian Truck. Awesome job.
Incredible amount of torque. And per wheel...
Fabulous review!
I love this truck, been following it from the beginning, hoping it would become reality.
It is out lol!
This was the most informative video the truck sounds amazing but I not quite ready for all electric truck for now I stay with my F-150, limited power boost
Fun fact: The R1T uses 7,776 Samsung battery cells. The battery in the flashlight is identical, so a total of 7,777 cells.
Haha that’s funny
Great job with this review!
You forgot about the air compressor in the bed.
Very good video. A shame that TFL wasn't invited to the event that was in their own backyard. Regardless, keep up the good work.
They will do their own review in time dont get caught up in the drama for clicks strategy
They were ghosted bc they wanted to test the towing range and rivian didn’t want them to expose them this early.
Super bummed this happened as well
Living in Colorado Springs, Colorado, TFL has lost their credibility with several of their journalists who allegedly have extremely intentional biased reviews they allegedly stack against some manufactures to promote others. Total lack of journalism ethics and professionalism on all levels.
TFL has always been biased against EV’s. Their Tesla videos are more like attacks.
Excellent review, Jordan 👍 You definitely know your trucks.
Well looks like good control and patience win again.. but is the electrical waterproof if you have been smashing around in the mountains for 10 hours in a day
So funny how Rivian ghosted TFL 😂
I like this. The colores are so much better as in the configuration screen on the PC, The Canyon Red looks fantastic great in my eye´s 🙂
Great review, great car. Forgot to mention it has a built in air compressor! What a cool vehicle.
SUCH a comprehensive and detailed review! Thanks!
Nice review, really like the truck!
To say that $5000 for the "camp kitchen" is "so worth it" seems like a bit of a stretch. I mean I think it's a really slick piece of engineering, but it ultimately doesn't really do anything that you can't do with a $20 Coleman stove and a jug. I still want one, though...
100% agree
You can't even tailgate with it if someone is parked beside you.
Great review!
Can't the sunroof be changed out for a solar panel extending the range or while it sits it can charge the battery a little?
@@sipher3516 I agree with everything you said, but redesigning the goofy headlights wouldn't change any of that.
@@stevevice9863 Agreed, the goofy headlights aren't for me but I think the truck is still fine as it is.
In the reviews of the R1T, some of the nicer things I have been called are "rich puke", "techno weenie", "girly man", "outdoor freak", "idiot", and "liar'.
Maybe we could all use a smiley face from a truck with have nice day headlights.
@@V4CarverThe front end does look better that the latest offerings from GM. They look like they were designed by Homer Simpson.
are they going to let you actually tow or off road it yourself eventually? or are you stuck with their b-roll?
We’ll get one as a regular test car, just didn’t have time to shoot our own video this time (and the handout video was honestly very good).
@@jlgolson It would be nice if you could do a co-shoot with TFL in Moab and on the Ike.
Is Rivian going to have a dealership network for servicing? What happens if I buy it and something needs to be fixed?
They currently dispatch service to your home or work. They are building out a network of service centers in major cities but it will take years to reach me so I will get concierge service for a while.
Why haven't you done a walk around and be specific about the range? Where are the air vents?
The Rivian is a proven truck. Watch Long way up, literally took that a prototype and drove it from Argentina to California
I love the Rivian, but it's still a compact truck. Wish it was a full size.
But when do you really use the full load bed or a full size?
@@andersbjrnsen7203 albeit rarely... when you need it.... every inch counts. (teehee)
Trailer rental maybe 😉
Great review. There was a bit though where you stayed talking about the buttons & what they do, but the video went straight to Rivian stock footage showing close ups of the seats. Don't know what the story is there but it was bloody annoying. Anywho, can't wait till we see these in Australia.
Waiting for the Lighting review!
That’s going to be a good question. Currently charging stations are not set up for towing.
The battery & motor are flat under, how's the waterproof on it?
Very waterproof.
Looks great. $67000 starting price not so much
Its brand new but with inflation I wouldnt expect to be saying $67k is a lot of money for a brand new loaded truck that much longer regardless.
So I wonder if you were to land in really deep water, what becomes of the high voltage sub-systems while you're inside?
Same as what happens to gas engines when submerged in water.
@@livinganewdream3682 Here's a good primer on it: auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-efficiency/vehicles/electric-car-shock.htm
@@Pickuptrucktalk Good to know. I'm an EE myself having designed similar power systems to that used in EVs and have wondered what the engineers have done with this topic regards to high voltage systems in water and that they've thought about this.

The shark fin antenna is on the roof, and above the bed is the cargo bars that the tent (and whatever else) attaches to.
