Proposal. The winners of east vs west means the NBA makes a donation to a charity of their choice.
Also, slam dunk contest is not the main event anymore. Make the 3 point contest the main event. Add some theatrics to it. The NBA is a shooting league, get rid of the skills and create more shooting events. Best out of 25 from 5 diff spots.
Also need to put in a king of the court. Fans vote 5 players they want to see 1v1, first to 5 points win

The Allstar break SHOULD be a "break" while still upholding the competitive and intriguing nature that keeps viewers both young and old, new and informed entertained. Its just downright boring. Im sorry but to me the celebrity game is the LEAST entertaining portion of ALLSTAR weekend. They need a complete restructuring of the Dunk contest where particpents are instructed on which dunks to perform to make decisive decisions more apparent. Replace the celebrity game with JUST ex NBA players who are within a certain timeframe removed from the NBA and still competitive. Keep the rookie game. Keep the 3 point contest but replace the skills contest with a WNBA vs NBA aspect. The last day of Allstar weekend SHOULD NOT be WEST VS EAST if they are not playing defensively. If thats the case replace them with G league players who are eager to showcase abilities and have potential for contracts.

The all star game is players wanting to play with each other, rather than play against each other. It also shows me a sense that the game is now more of a business than a sport.
Pretty solid discussion below - yeah, its pretty much the commercialization of the sport. Kinda sad to see. I dont think the players are completely innocent in all of this - theyve banded over the years, formed friendship and business relations, which can hurt the game.

I would like to see the NBA recognizing the best All-Star performances with a simple small badge on the jersey of that player, for winning a dunk contest, 3 point shootout or MVP. Individual accolades to brag about. Players would love to point to their jersey during the season, similar to how they point out how many rings they got. Imagine a vet like bron having a bunch of "medals" on his jersey like a decorated veteran, pointing to them after a highlight dunk. Or like an aircombat ace having killmarks on their plane to show off. Maybe people would care about who went above and beyond on AllStar Weekend during regular season if it shows everytime you are on tv because its printed on your jersey.

That way there's more crunch time, and teams that don't try get booted quick.
48 minutes is too much for a disorganized team with no chemistry that don't care especially about beating the other team!
All star game isn't a good place to test athletic endurance like that.
At least give the players an opportunity to make some nice end of game plays and play for the thrill of winning.

I covered the league for almost 15 years, and I will say that increasing player empowerment has been both good and bad, and the bad was on full display last night. But that level of power has made today's players so self-important they are thin-skinned to the point that, as Charles Barkley points out, they can't be criticized by the media, and even relatively mild heckling from fans has them demanding ejections. That self-importance is what permeates the All-Star Game, leaving the players incapable of reading the room and delivering what everyone else wants - a competitive game. They instead put on a "look-at-me" show that entertains nobody but them.

Instead of playing to win incentives, the league should implement playing not to lose by punishing the losing conference. Not actual punishment like a fine or something malicious, but something more towards slight embarrassment. Like losing team has to do something for winning team, whether carry their bags all weekend at the the next all star break or losers get hazed like rookies in front of the nba fans or what the heck put a dunk tank like a state fair and all the losers have to sit on it while the winning team tries to dunk them all in good fun. My logic is it’s an exhibition game, leave it at that. What they should do is allow both captains for each conference to have certain stipulations on what the losing team has to do. All of it in good, fun nature of course, and it would be entertaining for fans, which adds to the pride and competitive factor. Couple of questions:
    1. When discussing GOATs, do you take all star wins and stats into consideration?
    2. Does it affect your team at all if your conference loses?
    3. What would be your reaction to a star player getting hurt playing in the all star game?
    4. What would you think of a player that went all out in the all star game, got hurt and cost them a chance at a ring?
You answer these honestly and you know why the game is what it is. Easy for fans to want more effort but as soon as their star player is out for the season because he was trying so hard to win a meaningless game.

They can easily change rules to make this more interesting. (1) Give points to defense - steals, blocks, rebounds, count for points, steals worth the most. (2) Illegal to hurl the ball across the floor, you have to dribble it up, so defense can get set. (3) Tag team format. Players can tag each other in, play hard and get more breaks. (4) Each quarter is its own separate game, goal is to win 3 out of 4 quarters. If it's tied 2-2, it goes to a 1-on-1 tiebreaker, teams pick guys to go 1-on-1. They could set the rules up there to make for a really fun ending. (5) Game is reviewed by officials afterwards and anyone they deem didn't compete/care is not eligible for All Star next year. Not expecting Game 7 competitiveness but guys should want to win. Guys like Luka and Ant will have to try.

I think part of the reason the All-Star game is 20% energy and commitment is due to the fact the players have no real allegiance to the East or West. They all move around so much; whether that's a personal choice or team decision, that no-one seems to have any lasting pride in whether or not they're playing on the East or West team. The spite just isn't there anymore. Players should be having fun, absolutely and I think it's a great time for them all to catch up and enjoy the moment of arguably the best players in the world on the same court. But where's the East/West pride? Where's the competitiveness?
There was never an incentive in the 90's or early 2000's other than; your on the other team, we're going to beat you. Competition was the incentive. Winning. The All-star game is literally just an extension of the 3 point contest at this point.
Maybe they should bring out the best G-league players to field an East v. West team. I bet there'd be far more competition.

Today’s NBA is all social media. You can make $ from sponsorships. Theres way more ways for everyone to make money.
The product on the court suffers. No one cares if they lose out on a championship except a select few players.
Most dudes in the NBA are collecting $.
Top Dudes can not win their team a championship their whole career. No one cares really.
Ever go to a NBA game? They’re not that exciting. Compared to hockey, football, baseball.
We’re overexposed to sports too. At the end of a season, if my team isn’t in it. I don’t really care.

I would do 2 things, for the elders guys who like to see defense and general effort, I would create a 1 vs 1 tournament on the Saturday where the best player from each team or the chosen player from each team to compete 1 vs 1. If they loose then everybody will know which player is better. Eventually it would be another accomplishment to had to the list. 1 v 1 king sounds pretty good on the cv. As for the all star game, the players see it as a break and a catch-up. So I would start historically charting whether the allstar appearances are wins or losses. So 10 allstar appearances with 5 wins and 5 losses. If it’s attached to history then they will start to care a little more.
