How can you not like this guy? His knowledge of the game and execution on the things he's best at is superb.
2:20 "You can still do that". Shattering every 90s fans soul in 2 seconds xD
Indeed. The only reason it’s not done more is defenders don’t want to get crossed over. Hand checking isn’t the defensive ace move people make it out to be.
What JJ explained is still allowed, but what he explained wasn't 90s handchecking. You didn't have to take the hand off back then and thats the key.
Don't misunderstand me, I don't think it would bother Luka at all. The way 90s guards countered the handcheck was to play with their back to the basket 25 feet out...Luka does that today because its just his game. So I think Luka would likely feel right at home with 90s handchecking.
My beautiful friend of the sport. As i played mayself in the late 90s and early 2000s, i know the difference. I was just making a joke. Just laugh with me about it and dont explain. Nothing against edjucation, but sometimes, things are not that deep, but just funny.
He did not describe handchecking correctly lol. No surprise the handchecking people talk about was way before Redick was in the league
That's not the handchecking that was done by some players before the late 90s. Some players literally kept a hand on players waists and put force in it to make it harder to move against it.
Luka is just playing what’s in front of him. He said it himself - something like “if they want me to go left, I go left. If they want me to go right, I go right”. I don’t think there’s too much that’s premeditated. I don’t think you have TIME to do that much thinking on the floor - even playing at Luka speed. And with the defence constantly trying to throw different things at you, you can’t be too premeditated.
Same with the slow step. He can’t do that EVERY time. He’s just FEELING what will work in any situation and he’s good enough to have so many options can choose from and make the shot, regardless.
he has counters to counters to counters so he just goes with the flow vs the defender
@@choiboi23 Yeah its like watching super computer at work. Really nice clean bball. really mind-blowingly beautiful to watching master at work. Even dissecting some plays later u cant critique some decisions. Almost perfect executions everytime.
It's crazy because kyrie scores the same way but one does it a snail speed while the other does it like a jck rabbit
But that comes from repetition in practice or just putting work in. The best NBA guys are able to turn what we would call premeditated into something of an instinct.
@@dennisthemenace855 yep and then kyrie reads the defender and whatever the help does he just adjusts, meanwhile luka is reading the help and what ever his defender does he adjusts. Frigging awesome
Him mentioning Dwight Powell was really nice. I've been reading a lot of fans saying they want him out of there for years and I've always said Dwight was the only one who could run the pick & roll with Luka properly. Seriously. Go back to Luka's early days (post Dirk Mavs) and NOBODY's been able to play pick & roll with Luka as good as Powell. Maxi developed it a few years back, but he doesn't really roll that much. Now it's Powell and Lively.
It's literally his one strength. Everything else he's awful at
@@slimconfucius you can say that, sure. It's his one strength. but it's something Luka absolutely needs for the amount of times he comes off of screens. They can have 3 shooters out there, but if they don't have someone who can roll properly, it doesn't help Luka as much.
@@adingdingdiiing6740 Luka and Kai are two of the best ISO players in the entire league, they don't need an elite PnR guy, they need someone who is just decent at the PnR but can rebound and makeup for their lack of defense, Powell provides a good PnR but is a negative in the other two areas, there's a reason why their defense is a layup line when Lively sits and Powell is in.
@@slimconfucius there's also a reason why Dallas has constantly been signing supposed pnr guys over the years like DeAndre and McGee. That's why they deafted Lively. That's why Luka specifically mentioned in this interview that he needed Lively to learn that. They need that option. I'm not saying Powell is the best. I'm saying he's their best option for that particular play. Defense is another thing as no one on their team is a good defender, even the supposed "good" ones.
@@adingdingdiiing6740just got Gafford and Washington
Luka would abuse the hand checking rule for easy calls like Harden would. The level now is too great but people don't want to admit it.
wouldnt say its too great when players get bailed out by refs.
Offensive players today have a ton of talent. But let’s not confused gimmicky skills for talent. Players have learned to foul hunt like no other and it’s based on gimmicks like rip throughs, and barreling into defenders while flailing, landing on the ground, or flipping your head back to exaggerate contact.
Uh, abuse the hand checking rule for easy calls? The whole point is the hand checking meant refs didn't make calls. If the level was "too great", then NBA players would be scoring way more than their predecessors in FIBA (which is more similar to the older NBA). Surprise surprise, they're not (and it's not on some long term upward trend like the NBA league scoring averages either).
@@jmgonzales7701how do “players get bailed out by refs”? Players today attempt less free throws than ever before. 29.1 FTA in the 1980s, 26.8 in the 1990s, 25.1 in the 2000s, 23.1 in the 2010s and 22.6 in the 2020s. So how does that compute?
@@janveidt2700 first is carrying. Second is travlling, third is flopping. Litterally players today get touched and its fouled. Players today are indeed great shooters. @@JB-un2iv really tho? He played with FIBA Rules (and referees) until he got to the NBA, he keeps playing (and winning) with those rules with Slovenia. I wouldn't say it would be an instant seamless transition but with players as good as Luka there's an argument for them adapting to 90s ball

You are going big J.J.! WE LOVE THE SUIT!
Not just the defensive 3seconds but the restricted zone under the basket and the illegal defense call which now allows all the switching and soft zones
Taking away the Def3 would ruin the game.
If you don’t believe me, look back in the 60s & 70s when you were allowed to station someone in the paint with no negative impact on your defense. It made sense without the 3PT line.
You add that to the equation and you can’t really do that without getting burnt in the long run.
Lol, having your big guy stay at the paint then it's 4 v 5 in threes, so it will become easier to score more lol
@@prestoCreams No, cause NBA offenses now are based on drive and kick. A big man camping in the paint does a pretty good job of stopping the first part of the strategy.
I don't get saying scoring would be easier. NBA players almost unanimously say it would be harder to score, the NBA itself changed the rule to make it easier to score, the coaches, GMs, refs, and commentators ALL say rules like the 3s made it harder to score, and Luka has said it TWICE. What secret knowledge do you have that they don't?
@@gumballwaterson1957he’s comparing it to FIBA rules not 90s/00s rules though. Defensive 3 seconds was introduced in early 00s and teams still struggled to score lol. I think with the 5 out spacing that it’s much less effective.
@@newrecruit100 There's a lot of things going on with NBA scoring, but let's just look at FIBA. The NBA has been OPENLY changing rules to increase scoring, and it's stupid to argue with the guys who make their own rules that their own rules didn't make scoring easier when that's exactly what they wanted.
The US team just played in a FIBA tournament less than a year ago. If 5 out was a more effective strategy for scoring, then the US team's scoring should be better than the past, i.e. they should be scoring more than their predecessors. They're not. There is no consistent upward trend for team USA's scoring, and just looking at the data any excuse you try to make won't be consistent. The most consistent answer aligns with literally what the league, players, coaches, GMs, and fans who've watched the game for a long time say: NBA rules make it easier to score when they take away physicality and 3s. FIBA play just adds evidence that it's moreso the rules than the players abilities since FIBA hasn't had as many drastic offense related rule changes/interpretations as the NBA.
Please have LUKA on every week!
I dont watch basketball that often but the offensive player with the ball being able to use their off hand to basically push off and create separation seems like its just unstoppable
Iam still surprised that Luka came back to talk with JJ Redick, but this sounds like a very good interview.
😊
I feel like that slow step/deceleration was an evolution to his game brought about by playing so many competitive games. Remember, he's only 16 when he played for Madrid. His physique is not yet fully developed and had to work his way against faster fully-developed grown men. He had to think of a way to drive to the basket with the mismatch on physicality. One more thing is that it It's true, you can't really recreate the actual defense on practice that's why he said he didn't practiced it. The deceleration really depends on the defense. If the defender didn't jump you could see Luka would plant both his feet and pass the ball instead of forcing the shot. Unlike the crossover which you kinda bait the defender, the deceleration is really more of a gamble.
The irony is that for the majority of the NBA’s history it was considered a travel. 😂😂😂😂😂
Ur right though but the first guy I think of decel is PG and that back foot draggggggg off his toe.
Slow step is typical ex Yu basketball move and Shamgod is Bodiroga move.
“I don’t think people understand how talented players are today.” -THIS, this is the thing a lot of so called “fans” fail to understand but chalk it up to “no defense.”
nostalgia got them stuck in the past
Easy to be more talented when you're allowed to carryover, travel, lift your pivot foot, as well as rule changes like no hand checking, freedom of movement, gather step, etc. The game has been changed so much to allow offense to be what it is today, It's not because of "no defense", it's because the league made it this way... God i can only imagine how good players like MJ and Kobe would have been if they were allowed to do what players can today, it's actually a joke.
So explain why LeBron puts up better stats now at 38 then he did at 28 lol
Even the defensive minded jordan led bulls team would fail to stop luka from averaging a triple double against them
@@JaGra-tm2mwbecause he has mkre space as every role player can shoot. Go watch those cavs games, it was basicly 9 players in the paint and Bron had no consistent jumper.

JJ is 100% correct, it’s crazy how unphysical the game looks on tv, sitting up close in person at an NBA game shows you they actually try on defense. Truly insane
THANK YOU LUKA. Thankfully someone that actually plays in the league says players can still put their hand on the offensive player. That argument has always been so mind boggling to me.
Did JJ forgot he interviewed Gary Payton who gave a masterclass on hand checking? Like if Gary explained hand checking to Luka, theres no way in hell Luka would say it wouldn't matter. Hand checking was an art. Not everyone could do it without getting fouls called all the time.
Yes and his point was that players still get away with that today... so there wohldn't be much difference
There's still hand checking today lol, you're just a dumb old head who just rants and doesn't analyze any games, clearly Stephanie A SMITH POISONED your mind and made you dumb like him
JJ takes things out of context a lot. The thing with hand checking is, it wasn’t just the elimination of it in the rules, it also was to eliminate physical defense and allow more freedom of movement in general for the offensive player. The hand checking rule is not only about being able to hand check, it’s a rule that has changed the game entirely over the years due to overall changes in how the game is officiated.
@@user-pq4dq6bj2u right but my point is he used a different definition than what someone like Gary Payton or Michael Jordan would say hand checking is. And he based that it was still happening on his own definition and skills, not theirs. My argument is that not everyone was a master at hand checking, so his definition doesn't cover what those aforementioned players were doing. And that players nowadays aren't still doing it/allowed to do it, at least at the same level and skill that a guy like Gary Payton or like a Ron Artest did. I do think to some extent guys do some light hand checking still that point is true.
@@back2back379 agreed but I think the point now is they may have taken it to far when multiple rules got stacked, like Luka mentioned the 3 second defense rule.
Defense is historically bad and just this past week we had two 50 point quarters, the Kobe 81 anniversary week we had what 6 or 7 players go for 60 plus like it was easy, and I can almost guarantee at this pace we'll see a 200 point game.
JJ's take on hand checking helps me understand why he thinks MJ and Bird were playing against plumbers. Hand checking wasn't prevalent for driving offensive players. It was for top of the key. 3 point shooting was WAY harder bc of hand checking and that's why the best shooters in the 90s and 80s were 6"6+ outside of a VERY select few. Luka will still be good I THINK, but those hand checks at the top are hard
Imagine getting jabbed in the body right before you decide to shoot, nobody is prepared for that and foul isn't going be called

JJ has the best voice and mind for b-ball I have ever experienced. NBA should be making him the guy, the lead talk about NBA person
The thing with 1980's hand checking it really only works in the paint for players that use their back- while dribbling backing up. Hand checking for 'strong' defenders works... because if they put their elbow on your back as the dribbler' is backing up ...he cannot back up that stronger defender... the elbow force on offensive players back alters what the offensive player has to do.
When the offensive player is stronger than the defender with the hand checking or elbow on the back... the offensive player can still back up the defender.
But yes hand checking did make it harder to score. Because offensive player had to be a really good dribbler' great handles... to deal with defense like that.
This is what Rob Parker is talking about. Glazing, without being honest.
Luka is great. But the defense is non existent, players dont want to foul so they get out of the way.
And its not just the NBA now, look at highschool, same stuff is happening. Quick whistle, 2 shots at 5 fouls. Defense gone. We need a FIBA rule league in the US.

THANK YOU!! Ive been saying that bringing back hand checking isnt going to slow down these players much if at all. Then add on spacing, screening action, and more and thats a recipe for fouls. Bad defenders wont be better because they can hand check
The answer is to not call fouls as much. Bc half these fouls are invisible.
To be honest it depends on which era of hand checking
@@rplayer360 Any pre-2004 rules (with the interpretations) are going to be harder to score. Period. The NBA intentionally changed the rules to increase scoring and nearly every single player who played through the rule change says the same thing.

If 96 Jordan were to play in THIS NBA right now, 40 every game. I have ZERO doubt in it and Luka pretty much stamped it too with this convo.
At the same time Luka would have been a top 2 player in the 90's easily
But 96 Jordan was 33 years old, playing in his prime. I believe too that he will score 40+ every game.
96 Jordan was perfect for the 90's. He would probably have to facilitate a lot more in today's NBA to be successful, hence why I doubt the 40+.
@@user-ho1vf6eu7c 96 Jordan was coming of two years break, he was still the best player but physically he was a shell of his late 80's early 90's self.
luka would be the best in league with mj in the 90s. so many players from the current nba would dominate the nba in the 90s, today players have a LOT more physical skill then older players.
