  • The NBA All-Star Game has been dead for years and lots of people have ideas on how to fix it but how did it get so bad in the first place? It turns out the death of the All-Star game can be traced back to one moment in NBA history.

It can easily be fixed....Just make each player from the losing team pay 250,000$ or more of their own money to the winning team...Like when you lose a bet and pay to the winner. See how the game changes quickly. At least as someone who has worked as a manager and with problem solving, that is what i would do! Winner takes all lets say 500,000$ and loser gets nothing but applauses.

It's no coincidence that the All Star game got significantly worse once Kobe retired. He was the last of a dying breed that wanted to win more than anything and he set the tone in the games he played. In his prime there were other fierce competitors like KG, Duncan, Pierce, etc... who were the same way. They all wanted to compete, show respect to the game, and give the fans a chance to enjoy the greatest pick up game ever played
Near the end of Kobe's career, the new face of the league became someone who has cared about his personal "brand" more than anything. Lebron was more interested in avoiding anything that could damage his image instead of competing. A brilliant business move, but a depressing trend that he started and everyone followed. If the best player in the league can duck the Saturday contests and not try in the All Star game, then everyone else can as well. Fast forward and you now have an exciting young player like Anthony Edwards saying he sees the whole thing as a "break".
The worst part is that these players who are so focused on their own worthless "brand" are simultaneously damaging the much more significant NBA brand that actually puts millions in their bank account. At what point does the NBA experience a financial "correction"? Mark Cuban effectively selling the Mavs as team values hit all time highs tells me that correction might be coming sooner rather than later

@@hunterzolomon1303 An injury risk? Who has gotten injured in the all star game OTHER THAN Kobe?
      Exactly.
And "teams" dont dictate player involvement.
Why did Silver have to impose the in-season tournament? EXACTLY. Players were "load managing" their way to easy pay checks rather than PLAYING HARD EVERY NIGHT FOR THE FANS like MJ, Kobe etc.
LeBron is an uncompetitive front-runner who foreshadowed the death of the competitive integrity of the NBA with his cowardly "decision" in 2010/2011.

@@feynmanschwingere_mc2270 bro the players do what the teams want. Nowadays the playoffs are so important to players legacies that you are surprised they dont take non playoff or seeding games seriously.
For years greg popovich tanked and load managed players while he was mostly praised.
You think these teams acrually want their players to get injuref in the all star games and miss the play offs??
Bro its an arms race. When the 3 point line was first introduced nobody cared. Until teaks noticed 3points is better than 2 and everyone startef hitting more 3s so they would not be left behind. The same goes with injuries, health plays a huge part in winning playoffs so teams try to reduce the risk as mucj as possible and they are all trying to outcompete each other in health.
The NBA has existed for so long that teans are always looking for the most efficient ways to win, be it by 3points and or by injury free. Thays why the modern playerd reflect that. Even big men are now shooting 3s, and resting players whenever they can to have an advantage. It does not mean i think its better for us (entertainment) just that teams will do what they can to have the best chance of winning. Its just common sense and deductive reasoning.
The teams set the culture bro by recruiting and retaining certain types of players. They deem 3s as more important so they recruit morre players that shoot 3s including bigs.
As defending is now much harder to do because of no hand check, referreeing and spacing, the importance of 2 way players as the main stars are reducing, ie steph, jokic etc. Its part of why lebron can play so well in his age.
Now being able to score 3s or slash to the basket is now more important that mid range thays why u see young players having that in tbeir tool box.

    • @WARnTEA

I’d be down for just delaying the IST finals to the allstar weekend. It’d still be hype during the original IST for a team to prove they are the best in their conference.
The only potential issue is that you are basically punishing the 2 teams that play at allstar break. During the regular IST it isn’t as big of a deal because everyone has fresh legs but by allstar people could really use the break.
For example if the Sixers qualified for the allstar IST finals, they would be pissed going into the game with all of their players injured and potentially hurting the few players they have left as they are trying to rebuild their team to be ready for Embiid return to play in the playoffs.

They could take a page out of coaching/practice and change the Allstar game into a game of stops and play half court so the players can use more of their energy on the game instead of running up and down fullcourt.
Teams only get points for steals, blocks, and defensive rebounds. If you score you switch possession and go on defense. If a team fouls the enemy team plays the next possession on defense (giving them an extra chance to score a stop).
Some teams practice this way because it forces players to lock in on the important things like making good passes, taking high percentage shots and playing high level defense.
Play to a number tennis style. First to 15 stops, win by 2.
Break everyone into teams of 3 and play a single elimination bracket so the players that really don’t care can get eliminated in the first game, guaranteeing a fire semi/finals matchup.

    Option 1: Target mode
Each quarter will end if the times runs out or if a team reaches the target score
Target score is 25 per quarter or whichever number would be suitable or it can vary for each quarter like
    q1 target is 30
    q2 target is 50
or each quarter can have a target of 25 points
    so
    q1 25
    q2 50
    q3 75
    Option 2: 2k Mode
Using the LED court the game can have hot spots that move around the court or are changed after every turn of possession.
There can be 7 zones to shoot from that would equate to a 3 pointer and every other shot is a two point play, that way the led zones are where the players would shoot from and it would require a lot more passing and movement.
    Option 3: Point per player:
Every player who has possession of the ball gets a point. So if all 5 guys get the ball and then you score you get 5 points
so literally each player represents a point value, if you can pass it to all 5 guys it is 5 points 4 guys is 4 points so it is literally scored based on the all stars making it the all star game. So if you drain a 3 from half court that is 1 point. Also passes have to be a wingspan length away so pick and rolls do not count. This is the most complicated idea but would be interesting to see how they would all play.
All passes have to be in the front court for the point total to increase

I feel like these things are absolutely pertinent when trying to accurately compare salaries with a difference of decades between them.

    1) Increase pay for players that have a positive +/- rating And decrease pay on players that have a negative +/- rating

There are many things that they have to do in my opinion. it's not just one
    1. Move the All-star Weekend to the End of the Season (yes, after the playoffs)
    2. Divide the players in 4 teams, each one has a captain who chooses 5 players (or 6 maybe...you can add 4 more all-stars).
    3. Give some sort of economic incentive. Why? As you know, players get more money if they make the all-star or an All NBA Team...so... instead of giving everybody the same financial upgrade, give them a Ranking value.
    Let's say:
    4 teams
4 minigames of just one quarter
The first and second quarters are like semifinals
3rd quarter is for the third position between those 2 teams that lost in the First and Second Quarter
4th quarter is the championship game
Players will be able to get a financial upgrade in the next year of their contract depending on how good they made in the All-star
More money to those whose team won and less to those whose team ended up last
The MVP of the All-Star would be the best paid of the following season
You say that money may be the problem...play with it

Reason is because players these days, by the time they are 20, have already logged in tens of thousands of hours training and competing; the players are much more serious now and the lifetime stress their bodies have endured is far greater. The players in the 60s weren't training non-stop since they were 5 years old; they just played recreationally lol...

The first option has the money motivation. It might not be enough. The third motivation has the pride motivation, it might or not work, but it is too disruptive. I like more the second option, because the coach will do whatever it takes to win that game and get home court advantage. The All-star coach has a good chance of making it it to the NBA finales, and so the All-star players.

The guy trains 6 days a week, twice sometimes 3 times a day including weight room sessions. He’s not NBA level but the amount of abuse his body goes through is not something normal people can understand.
I used to play junior state ball and amateur league ball so I can attest to what he says, people say “oh athletes have it easy”, like it’s 8 hours sometimes more of hard, rigorous, work. And then you have the team meetings, the footage session, the travel etc. So I can understand why NBA players slack off during the all star weekend. 82 games is really taxing on the body, plus the ridiculous travel times, America is really really BIG compared to my country.
So like Shai said, the payoff must be worth it for the players to go all out. Either a big pay bonus, or something like the winning conference plays 5 games instead of 7 in the playoff rounds etc.

Casey, here's how you fix the All-Star game. No players are paid any additional bonus money just for being selected as an All-Star. The losing team's players will each pay $1 million (or any other agreed upon amount) out of their REGULAR salaries to the winning team. For example, if the All-Star prize is $1M per player, then the winning team would walk away with a grand total of $12 million dollars (each winning player would receive $1 million a piece). But the money comes from their regular salary. There are no more extra bonuses. It's two teams betting against other with their own money! The NBA has already embraced gambling. So there is no moral conflict. But if their is a rub have the losing team donate the money to the charity of each winning player's choice. Thoughts?
