And going all the way to the rim with no one trying to even pretend to stop them. Kids today argue the modern player is just waaay more talented, hence the higher scoring but that's absolutely not the case, the defense isn't allowed to actually try to stop the offense anymore, the NBA wants higher scoring. If I go to the park and no one defends me as I shoot from where I want and I get to the rim unhindered, I will absolutely score more 😅 Now if they put a defender on me and they try to not let me score, obviously I will score less but explain that to today's younger generation 😅 Common sense isn't that common amongst them.

      No you don't.
As far as the ASG is concerned, I think it has more to do with the players' mentality. It used to be a contest of pride: who's the best. When I was in college, we used to rush to the Rec when we heard that so and so was going to be there because we knew that they would throw down on the court. Now, it's just pure entertainment because today's players don't care about pride, but presidents (ie money). I don't think enacting different rules will help. The only thing that can change it is the players. The league should just stick to silly shooting contests and drills from now on.

I would plan for weeks for it (emotionally and ritually) making sure no one disturbs me, no homework to do or events to attend, warning anyone not to even contemplating of disturbing me. It was magic. Now I mark the day and always miss it only to start watching the game on Sunday (after noticing FB posts) and switching it off just before halftime; meanwhile I do other stuff while it’s on background. Now I don’t even know which city is held at till I check the logo markings on the court.

It's a relic from a bygone era. The era where you only saw non-local market games 1x a week and hoped your team was in those games, but more than likely it was just a big market team like NY, Boston, LA, Chicago. The era where your local team was on cable TV. The era where your "only" exposure to non local teams was thru highlights and the ESPN cable channel. Now, with the internet and 24/7/365 streaming services, you literally have access to every player and every team every single night of the week if you want it.
The players don't care. The TV execs don't really care (TV contracts aren't getting negotiated based on the all-star game) The true losers in all this are the fans that actually pay money to see this or watch it on TV.

MLB did the first all-star game in 1933. Think of the context. There was no television then and the two leagues only played against each other in the World Series so there were stars going against each other that had never faced off before. That game would have been quite a spectacle. All-Star games really don't have a reason to exist these days. Not only is every game televised but we can see highlight packages on TH-cam and all the players are on social media and are widely visible to the general public. There is less of a novelty in seeing sports star now compared to even 20 years ago. If they want to be, these guys are everywhere. You don't need a special event to see them. It makes sense that players won't really put in much an effort when the all-star game serves no real purpose and is just done out of tradition. The leagues should just not bother and just name all-stars at the end of the season. If they still need a break then just have a mid-season break.

Just make this stuff matter in the postseason since that's ultimately the slander that is always pulled out for a player no matter what they do in the regular season. The players heard that nothing they do matters if they don't have postseason success so they now act accordingly by mostly not caring about the regular season. Make all the in season stuff somehow equal a home postseason game and players would try. Win the skills, dunk, 3pt contest? Win the Allstar game? In season tourney? Anything new that can be added? Same thing, get a play-at-home chip. Stack your chips and whichever team has more has that many more home games in a playoff series. The best players with real ambition would now make themselves available and actually try.

in the end, it will be shown the NFL took the right approach to the pro bowl.
it was always an exhibition game.
the NFL was right to turn the pro bowl into a laid back, fun time for the players & the fans.
nba players make so much money now, i can only see possibly 2 ways to try to keep the all star game competitive.
first, make the players who are selected to the all star game stand in front of people from a charity of their choice & pledge to those folks they're going to bring them back a huge donation by helping their team to win. to whichever teams loses, those players will then have to stand in front of the people they previously made a pledge to & tell them they let them down.
the other option perhaps would be to have all star selections pick a backup from their team's roster to play in their place. let the back ups fight for the bag.
    just a couple of thoughts.

    Keep East vs West.
1.) Maintain how the 5 starters of each conf. team are selected (fan, media, player votes).
2.) Have coaches select ONLY 3 (bench) players per team.
3.) Commissioner/League chooses addl. 6 players per team, taking into account fan/coaches votes. Team size becomes 14players.
4.) Incentivize WINNING Coaching Staff only, so they actually coach.
5.) Here's the kicker -- only the (voted) starters (10), the coach selected players (6), and ONLY the remaining 8 players from the WINNING team gets to keep the All-star TAG. The others LOSE IT, like they were not named all-stars at all. So you have about half of the team (maybe) wanting to play hard, not just for bragging rights, but bec. of contract-based incentives they get for being named an all-star, which most of these guys have for sure. (Losing maybe means *chips on their shoulders for next year).
6.) Total official All-stars will (still) be 24 players (as it is now, excl. inj. replacements.)
