    IIHS News Release | June 2, 2022
The 2022 Jeep Wrangler 4-door tipped over in the driver-side small overlap crash test in a repeat of a problem shown by an earlier model. Structural modifications made by the manufacturer did not eliminate the issue.
Like the 2019 model tested earlier, the 2022 Wrangler tipped onto its passenger side after striking the barrier used in the crash test, resulting in a marginal rating for driver-side small overlap protection. A good rating in the test is required for a Top Safety Pick award.
The Wrangler performed well by the normal metrics used to evaluate performance in the test. The safety cage surrounding the driver held its structure well. The restraints also effectively controlled the movement of the dummy, though the test indicated a significant risk of injury to the driver’s left leg and foot and the combination head and torso side airbag did not deploy. However, tipping onto its side presents an additional injury risk beyond what the standard criteria are intended to measure, in part because the IIHS test does not include a dummy seated on the passenger side.
Even partial rollovers are dangerous, as they increase the chances that an occupant may be completely or partially ejected from the vehicle. That’s especially relevant for the Wrangler, which has a roof and doors that can be removed and lacks side curtain airbags.
Stellantis had been working to address this issue since the test of the 2019 model brought it to light. Redesigned in 2018, the Wrangler was eligible for a driver-side small overlap rating based on manufacturer testing because the model’s previous generation earned a good rating in the test. In such cases, IIHS will assign a rating based on video of the manufacturer test and other documentation.
The 2019 model did not tip over in the test conducted by the company and submitted to IIHS for verification. However, it tipped in an IIHS test conducted as part of an audit program designed to ensure the integrity of the verification program and then again in a subsequent retest requested by the company.

I could almost see that because it goes away from the object before it can hit the “occupant area”, the roll is probably better than the object breaching the cabin, BUT, if other vehicles can keep the occupant safe without channeling away from the object and or flipping after, those other vehicles are better.

@@jg8263 Given that there are no head airbags, concrete flooring or not I wouldn't want to be rolling in it lol The sides of a car are incredibly hard, bashing your head on them is enough to kill you lol
You know a great deal of vehicles have their side head airbags programmed to go off in a crash like this small overlap one so the head doesn't impact the B pillar when you're thrown back into your seat?
I was looking last night and these cars are literally death traps at high speeds for their occupants, and death traps for anyone else at low speeds. The vehicle is way too rigid in all the wrong spots. The front end has no give when they T-bone people at relatively slow speeds the vehicle they hit just ends up slicing in half.
      Stupid design all round.
But yeah as I was saying I'd rather end up with a broken foot because of some floor intrusion than smashing my head on the side of the vehicle, or being smacked around by objects in the car (big, big killers in car crashes, even low speed ones) and ending up with brain damage.
As always the Stellantis group makes unsafe vehicles and gets caught out only to turn around and say "It meets federal regulations."

The problem is the height. The Wrangler is too high off the ground. Jeep needs to take notes from Ford. The Bronco earned a good rating, and it’s not that much lower to the ground. Furthermore, it has side curtain airbags with or without the doors off. The Wrangler should come standard with the ride height of the Bronco, plus should have the curtain airbags. It’s simple. If the owner wants to lift it, do it as an aftermarket modification. That would mean the owner is taking the risk of being hurt in a crash, and wouldn’t be Jeep’s fault.

A solid axle front end vs independent front suspension makes a big difference here. They could keep the same ride height and switch to IFS and achieve a better score. However people buy Wranglers due to them having a solid axle front and back.

I'm looking at the replay of the crash and it definitely seems like the rear suspension is a contributing factor. Instead of compressing and absorbing the shock of the crash as it travels through the body, the suspension is way too taunt which causes the back end to bounce off the tires. There's zero gives there at all.

I think the problem is that there is no real crash bumper on the corner in front of the wheel, and so the impact goes on the wheel, it brokes away and pushed under the frame to lift the car. Other car have a crash zonevon the whole width of the front. But that makes the look of the jeep. A friend of mine was flipped on the side by a partial rear impact, same reason.

Certainly a hard battle for the Wrangler just by virtue of its shape but there's a lot of things going against it when compared to peers like the Bronco. Impact bar is super narrow and barely catches, apron assembly easily deflects inward and allows the car to slide along the outer body work before hitting the hinge pillar which helps springboard it off the obstacle. Like side by side comparison with the Bronco's test (just using it for comparison, not stating a bias for the Bronco) you can see how the apron accordians as designed and that helps push the car DOWN against the obstacle as it catches, but because the apron is so sucked in and the wheels outboard on the Wrangler it instead acts as a deflection point.
Stellantis says they made changes, I have no idea what those changes are because that area of the vehicle looks exactly the same over the years but if they intend to not repreat this result they really need to think about that apron and rail design compared to their peers.

What it looks there is a energy is transfer to the passenger side of the jeep The vehicle all ready has a high center of gravity for off roading so transferring the energy to passenger side during the lift of the jeep when the front axle breaks is probably causing the roll over but what I do know I just watching the video and giving my opinion

What percentage of the front of the vehicle is calculated to determine the impact point of this particular test?!
Or how do you guys determine which point of impact location is the right spot to keep consistency throughout your tests since vehicle sizes vary?!

Jeep off road capability makes it easier to roll over due to the higher center of gravity and solid axles on the front and back. It's an unique vehicle. This new Bronco is toy. That's why people likes the Jeep. Anyways Jeep drivers are usually better drivers anyways ;-)

It's worse than the 2019 Jeep Wrangler. The construction and safety cage of both cars are good but why would the new Wrangler driver break his leg while the old 2019 Wrangler driver will walk away with only a few light scratches.

    • @Cobalt135

There are trade offs to have the most capable off-road vehicle off the assembly line. A lot us buy them and change over half the suspension components to stronger components... like stuff we DON'T want to shear and break off or bend.... which is the opposite you would want for impact absorption. We don't buy them for their safety ratings. Just my opinion if someone buys a Wrangler to get groceries and haul the kids around they overpaid for the transfer case that will never leave 2H, sway bar disconnects, solid front axle, etc.etc.

I personally don't understand how this only receives a 'marginal' rating instead of a 'poor'? I've watched and read enough of these where a 'poor' rating will be applied if the head slips off the airbag slightly... The whole damn car flipped over and it wasn't even a side impact test, AND the side airbags didn't deploy. That seems like a failed test to me? Maybe I am missing something, would love to hear some feedback.
