    Buying a dehydrator was hands down the best thing I did for myself especially as a vegan on trail. My husband is not plant based but even he eats plant based dinners with me while we are backpacking because he says they make him feel better at the end of a long day.

It’s the biggest thing we can do to protect our wild places! 😊 thank you for making this! 🌱 There are these amazing pouches made with silicone which are great for making up porridge in and they aren’t to expensive, they are great for reducing waste to! Great video 🌱🌱

    Also worth checking out refill shops too for stuff like nuts, seeds, dried fruits, oats, cous cous etc. Saves a lot of plastic packaging and it's not as expensive as you'd think. We have 2 in our town and at least 1 in nearby Sheffield.

    Love it! I hike, backpack, camp and kayak with a group of women, and I’m the only vegan. It does get challenging, so I’m working on starting my own all-women vegan outdoors group!

    Wow thank you for the video, been vegan for 4 years and glad to see people start to realise the beauty of the outside world is the nature and we don't need to eat animals as it truly ruins the eco systems we all love to see.

    All this plant based stuff looks good to be honest and extremely nutritional. I usually just go for a piece of fruit and a cereal bar whilst I'm out on a walk.

    great video Abbie, drink wise nescafe now do latte sachets with almond and oat milk at least. Also when i started having problems with milk I got used to drinking black tea as I didn't like plant based milks available at that time in tea. Also love herbal teas :-)

    There is an American Walker who takes sprouted alfalfa and broccoli seeds in a cloth bag, they keep growing over his trip. It’s a nice way to get fresh crunchy veg in a wrap. Have not had the chance to try it out yet though. I do them at home so in theory it should work in the UK.

    Great topic. Never seen anything on this before so it is good you bring an alternative to meats up in the light. A pescaterian since 36 years and never had any problems sustaining myself during my travels. Trying to stay away from the packaging hysteria, though. Small satchels or portion size bags are convenient but usually very expensive and adds to the waste footprint. Trying to pack some fresh fruits or veggies as it sometimes is a luxury to have fresh produce on the trail.

    I'm so glad I've found your channel!!! I'm new to hiking and wild camping and I'm vegan so it's great to have ideas for food.
    I make my own trail mix and costs me £3 to make 2 zip lock bags of nuts, mixed fruit and chocolate!
    There are some good cheap alternatives to the firepot and summit meals which are super expensive when your on a budget. I'm going to have to try them though!

    I spotted you Bobbie. Loved the video, I’m not vegan but this was so informative. I love flapjacks and oaty bars. I will definitely look into more information about foraging as I only do day hikes. I will definitely try some of the foods that you suggested, so thank you.     I love reusable silicone pouches for my hike snacks’ ive stopped using little plastic sandwich bags altogether now they’re fab’ there’s loads on eBay at reasonable prices 😋

    Great video, what about foraging teas? Nettle tea, dandelion, mint, raspberry (not if your pregnant) I would love you to mention though litter! I live on the north Yorkshire Moors and during lock down there as been a lot less litter. We found an owl stuck in litter a couple of years ago. We did free it but please mention responsible disposal of litter. I always knot things that will blow away, for instance, to make them heavier and less likely to fill with air. Xxxx

    Fantastic stuff! Your early videos used to worry me (and my wife - a dietitian) because of the dreadful dried food (such as synthetic Pot Noodle) you were relying on for your epic multi-day trails. I’ll bet you’re already feeling stronger and healthier!

    Thanks Abbie! This old lady is long time plant based... thanks for showing these options... great job! Over here in the states we call Nutritional Yeast “Noosh” and we use it a lot in almost everything... awesome for sautéing tofu... etc... We also have some tasty powdered non-dairy creamers, but they do include processed sugar, so I can’t use them. Stay Wild!

    Thanks for this video Abbie. There are more and more options these days for we "Plant based" eaters. Hitting the trail poses a special challenge though. Need the calories. Always good to get some new advice/ideas. Incidentally, I was searching for a new rain parka and stumbled on your review of the RAB Downpour jacket which helped convince me... so I got it. 😊 I like RAB anyways. Have a Bivy by them which I like. Happy trails... 🏃‍♂️

Never walked more then a day but found my old backpack and sleeping bag (from camping 20 yrs ago..) Maybe i'll give it a go this year..

    Good advice there Abbie, I'm a fellow backpacking vegan, so always glad to pick up ideas. Big tea drinker too - I switched to Redbush/Rooibos because it tastes great without milk. The vegan pâtés you can get in 200gm tubes - mushroom, herb etc - are also great for bunging on oatcakes etc. Also just discovered that maltloaf is vegan - happy days! :)

    Use by - don''t eat after the use by date. This is a food safety issue.
    Best before/display until/etc - can eat after this date as it is about food quality and stock control

    Interesting video, a lot if good ideas. I tend to eat a lot of stuff like salami and junky, but trail mix is something I think ill spend a bit more time looking into. Peanut butter was something I tried to use a lot more on my last trip. Its a bit of a superfood

    Nicely done video. TH-cam definitely has its share of hiking/camping channels with overweight, middle aged men consuming large chunks of meat, cooked on a way too small pan! 😂
    I’m not a fan of all the grease, the tent smelling of frying, the washing up etc, so plant based is awesome when hiking and camping.
    I’m more of an adaptive eater. Plant based where possible, but I eat dairy (oatcakes or fresh bread with a good blue cheese!) and eat meat if there are no other options.
    My go to food is a smoothie made with pea protein, blueberries, avocado, spinach and almond milk.
    A lot of our landscape that we enjoy walking through is a direct result of animal farming though. All those beautiful and idyllic pasture lands and fields, grazed by sheep, cows, goats etc. 🤷‍♂️

    Is there really a physiological need to increase the GI on your diet while on one of these hikes?
    I understand possibly increasing calories although I wouldn't do that as I can afford to lose a bit.
    I also understand looking for convenience over diet purity on the hike.
    Just trying to learn.

    I think you're striking just the right tone here - I like the fact that you talk about being flexible and respecting other cultures. So many vegans get very rigid and judgemental. If I get invited into someone's home deep in the mountains, I'm not about to impose my views on them. You simply have to decide whether your value the purity of your diet over those precious opportunities to experience another way of life. It's always going to be a personal choice. For me, I'm prepared to compromise so I can have authentic encounters with the culture I'm passing through.
    Lots of great suggestions, but you missed out what most people feel is one of the essentials.
    On a tough mountain trail an average sized guy can easily be burning 6000 calories a day - a typical woman, somewhat less but still a lot. On a weekender it doesn't really matter if you operate in deficit, but on a long trail you have to find a way to keep the calories up. This is tough on a plant-based diet without standbys like cheese and dried meat. Even assuming you're going to pig out in town when you resupply, you still have to be eating at least 3000 - 4000 calories per day on a long trail or you start losing muscle.
    For me, and pretty much ever other plant based eater I know, part of the answer is olive oil. You can find it everywhere in the West, and at 9 calories per gram its the best bang you can get for your buck. You simply add it to your evening meal. Mix in some dried herbs and you almost have pesto... If you're sleeping cold, a quick shot before bed gives your metabolism a boost and warms you up. Just be sure to carry it in a well-sealed container!
    Some other random suggestions for staples - especially for remote Alpine areas where options are limited. Another fast-cooking grain is bulgar - just pour on hot water and let it soak. Goes great with dried fruit, and often available in southern Europe, where you can also find the kind of small, fast-cooking pasta they add to soups - such as pastina or stelline. Also keep an eye open for quick-cook polenta and good old potato powder/flakes. In the US a lot of veggie hikers subsist on dehydrated cooked bean flakes - they carry a container where they can pre-soak them cold for an hour or two before they reach camp. Split red lentils also cook fast after a quick soak on the trail.
    For flavour and variety, one of my standbys is tomato paste - very tasty and widely available. Dried veggies are great - for example onion perks up any boring dish. You can often buy them in a mix or in packet soups, which I use as a sauce on my carbs. You often find dried sauce mixes too - better than nothing if that's all that's available. A little fresh garlic, chilli and ginger more than earns its keep - failing that dried is good too.
    In fancier outlets, look out for dried tofu, quinoa (pre-soaking speeds things up), coconut milk powder, dessicated coconut, hummus powder, nutritional yeast, TVP, dried mustard ...
    It's good to have a checklist of things to look out for in the local language, You're often quite frazzled when you resupply and it's easy to forget things - I once had a spectacular fail and needed to beg food from a remote farmhouse...
    As you can see, no need to go hungry, even in areas where they have never heard of plant based eating!

      I bought a huge bag of coconut milk powder at an Indian supermarket in London and it was such a game changer! :) My go to hiking staple is a big jar (or bag to make it lighter) of peanut butter, high in calories and delicious.
      I don't see how not eating animal products in another person's home is imposing your views though. Expecting people to prepare vegan food for you or telling them to go vegan would be imposing your views. But politely declining a dish? I do my very best to avoid participating in animal exploitation at home as well as on my travels. The same goes for participating in racist, sexist or homophobic behaviour. And I still feel like I have bonded with people and gotten to know them and their culture.
      I understand that everyone has to make that decision for themselves and that we have to be mindful that different cultures have different values and customs but not wanting to compromise on our values isn't necessarily extreme or about purity. But as you said, it's a very personal decision to make.

    Just started the out door life again aiming for 20 mile plus day walking to start with after being diagnosed with hypertension , type 2 diabetes , cholesterol . So need low carbs , low sugar , low fat . Dr shrugged and said idk good luck with that one . Any ideas for trail food ?

      May I suggest you look into Dr Michael Greger, Dr Esselstyn, Dr Klapper, Dr Neil Barnard. They provide a great deal of scientifically based advice. It's up to you if you are willing to follow it. Which is easier a SOS Free WFPB diet or open heart surgery? I know the one I chose!

I've been on a low carb diet since last month (at the insistence of my family doctor/GP, due to quite the health scare) and now all the trail food I usually eat is a complete no-go. You have any tips or tricks? (in spite of also struggling to stick to the diet ;) ) Because I'm at a bit of a loss. :/

    I enjoy this video and the ideas, but wait a sec. When did you become vegan? You used to go for the cream teas! Not a critique, just an observation. Surely cream on scones is not vegan. Do you have any ideas for vegan protein without nuts or seeds? It's tough dealing with allergy.

    Admirable as the vegan diet is I do think that unless you are well educated about nutrition it will be hard to avoid type 2 diabetes in later life unless you are very careful . Getting essential fatty acids is problematic too but I think the alternative for that is definitely not provided by a plant based diet . Our bodies can't cope long term with so much fructose which gets deposited round our organs . An active person will burn that up in ketosis ..except most people won't use that because they aren't active enough so they get bigger and bigger.. look around you . Not everyone is as active as Abbie . I've been vegetarian for 50 years since I was 7 and asked my mum what bacon was . Never ate meat again . Still not convinced that everything can be provided by a vegan diet but at least it won't cost the earth !

    Thank u 🙏 for the video sadly all the good u show are nut I have been living in the wild for 30yrs stared from age 5 yrs my dad love the outdoors, so all u show witch is good for thous who don’t know is good, I. Use plant base food be4 and yes 👍 u can get. Good veterans from them. Can’t wIt too see any other video. So stay wild

    I am all for letting others make their own personal eating choices and if someone has a medical condition that has to be taken into account.
    Also encouraging others to get outside is great, but concerns me some may be iLL equipped both psychological and physically to take on long hikes.

    Its a shame there is so much plastic in the wrapping of the vegan foods you have shown us. This begs the question as to how environmentally considerate the produce really is.

    You have so many vegan cookies and bars. In NZ that's quite hard to get as many cookies and bars have milk powder. Thanks for the video 😊
