  • An in-depth discussion with David who recently walked the Camino de Santiago and returned home. We wanted to look at his kit to find out what was useful and what wasn't, and evaluate anything extra he bought on the trail. The idea is for you to come away with new ideas and a fresh perspective of what life is like on the Camino de Santiago.

    Excellent information and very helpful. Having read some of the comments I'm very surprised how many people think they know more about what suits other people than the person who did the walk!

    "Phantom Pant Pincher" - priceless! Good and interesting video. - always nice to see what works (or does not work) for other people.

    Fascinating update, thanks David & Abbie.
    Completely with you on the Pertex windproof. It's the best, the lightest and about the cheapest, bit of kit I wear, and is hugely effective. I'm good down to about 3C in it.

    You two are such nice people! In the USA hard-core ultra light hikers who do the Appalachian trail and the Pacific Crest trail use SMART water bottles. It's a brand of mineral water that uses sturdy reusable bottles that are feather like and last for ever. Plus they don't make that annoying crinkle sound. Hope you make many more videos.

    The Camino de Santiago runs through many parts of Europe. What most people think of, though, is the "French Way" or Camino Frances which runs from the border of France through the north of Spain to Santiago de Compostela. I did the Camino myself with a much, much smaller pack - the Osprey Talon 33. It was more than enough, and I am going back with a 25l pack the next time.

    • @globemalo
      @globemalo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      25 will be enough?

    • @sudanjackson

      There have been people who walked the Camino Frances with the Osprey Talon 22 pack. It all comes down to what you need to carry vs what you "want" or carry "just in case". My rule of thumb: Bring what you need. I can get 3 Pairs of Undies and Socks, 2 very light Polos, 2 light shorts, a travel towel, toiletries, an pair of "relaxing shoes" (Salomon RX Moc), my 2.5 layer weatherproof jacket (Mammut Kento), a sleeping bag liner (no bed bugs for me), Charger and cable for my iphone, Water Bottle, a Buff, light gloves and other small items.... all of that into a 25l backpack with room to spare for the odd bottle of wine, bag of vegetables, or bocadillo :-) Happy to post the link to my blog showing this...

    2 questions: I have a dry sack made for washing clothes inside (has little nubbins on the inside)...but it's about 2-3 times as heavy as my other one. take it instead or leave it? Second: what was the first aid kit/little red dry sack you had for the first aid kit? It looks perfect size for that and waterproof? Thank you! Perhaps the most useful video on camino packing yet.

    I've watched many videos about the Camino and the tip about bringing brightly colored men's boxers was not only the funniest but probably the most important.

    Abbie….. Have you ever made a video of walking the Camino De Santiago trail, if you haven’t, your fans could search for a dvd movie called “The Way”. 🙂

      You’re thinking of the Camino de Santiago Which does indeed involve walking across Spain. This guy did the Camino de Sandiego! Presumably a totally different thing all together.

      Dude! You lost me at the third daybag!
      Anyone considering any type of hike/backpacking trip PLEASE look elsewhere for getting your weight down! Part of the Camino experience is understanding how little one needs. My Arizona Trail gear--outside of my naked body, food and water is under 8 K. That's including the pack, stove, tent and pad! (And although some people will laugh at that weight as excessive, I may encounter snow.)
      I cycled the Camino de Santiago April/May 2018, and I constantly saw people like this chap who took WAY too much stuff.

    Hi Abbey. Did your dad need the 48 or would a 38 have done if he excluded the things he didn’t use and dropped the sleeping bag for a liner? Your post and pre-Camino packing vids are very helpful. I am hoping to walk it in April or September on the shoulder season.

    A lighter is not hot enough to properly sterilise a needle. It will also likely leave carbon deposits on the needle. Better to prep your needle with some sort of disinfectant.

    Too much gear. 38L exos, u/l synthetic fill jacket, lighter than fleece. Lots of lighter sleeping bags. Only 1 change of clothing. Trail running shoes with thin wool socks. Small roll of Leuko tape to prevent blisters. Very thin thongs for shower use. Very thin travel towel, after washing your clothes lay them on top of the towel and then roll up and squeeze. Helps cut drying time.

    I've walked the Camino Frances a couple of times. His kit looks like too much and too heavy.
    If you are walking it between June and September you could easily walk it with a pack and kit half the amount that he carried.
    A pack no bigger than 40L. No rain pants needed. No gloves needed. No real cold weather clothing at all needed. Waterproof boots/shoes not needed. A sleeping bag not needed, or at least one that weighs more than half a kilo. I only carried a faux silk liner.
    All in all, I used a 35L pack that weighed about 5 kilos. Carried only a cheap poncho. Tossed it in a bin in Santiago.
    You do not want to carry things you "might need".

    • @AbbieBarnesWILD
      @AbbieBarnesWILD  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He actually used and needed all of the kit he carries, other than what is mentioned :) But thanks!

    • @rozmcgarry7688
      @rozmcgarry7688 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went with a 10kg kit -plus water and my DSLR I carried on my front, I bought so much extra kit along the way that I ended up buying a huge rucksack and using the transport service so I could have all the kit I wanted and travel with a nice light pack - I still find it impossible to pack light. But for a trip like the Camino I'd rather enjoy the walk and relax well in the evening. There are no extra points for having a lighter pack. Hats off to you for managing it, my camino buddy from USA called me a 'slack-packer' for using the service :D
