I knew someone that ended up marrying a crew member. They met while on the ship. The cruise was out of New York and the ship was in New York every week, they'd always meet when the ship was docked. When the crew's contract was over, they ended up living together and got married. I think they are still happily married.
Ahhh...I miss the "good old days" of cruising! The ships were smaller, more intimate, no cameras, and lots of crew parties! We hit the parties every cruise, and we loved to cruise, but we really didn't hook up. Crew and passengers would connect off ship, go dancing, swimming, etc., and had lots of fun. It was fun back then...now we stick with family, have lots of fun but think about the old days. 😉

Arguments, fights, the kind of chaos the companies don't want to deal with, and resulting in losing crew members because of the chaos. My friend was jumped by another passenger because she was dating a crew member and the woman was jealous. It was pretty awful...and that was when ships were small with far fewer passengers and crew. It could result in a nightmare scenario for the companies so I definitely understand.
It’s not just “freedom” but people who work on the ship have a level of authority over guests so it seems some might not be able to consent. Like how prison guards can’t have relations with prisoners even if the prisoner consents.
A Filipino restaurant server seemed to take a liking to my father on a cruise several years ago and offered to meet up at one of the ports, but dad was all about just being with my sister and I because we were on holiday from university. But dad remained very friendly with her and planned to share email details before we disembarked. But, toward the end of the lengthly cruise, she disappeared. After much begging to get information on why she wasn't serving in the restaurant anymore, one of the other servers told my dad that she was caught inflegro delecto with another passenger and immediately fired and removed at the next port.

Hey J, On my very first cruise in the 80's, I thought fraternizing with passengers was forbidden, then one island guy asked me to to go into town with him for the evening. I said to him, "I'm traveling with three girlfriends. Either we all go, or no one goes." He looked at all of us, smiled and said "I understand", and waved good-bye. He missed out on a night of drinking and dancing! Guess he could not handle four lively ladies! Lol
I remember on QE2 , there were "Gentlemen hosts", these guys were on board , paid by Cunard to dance with the single ladies . I believe they could only dance twice and had to leave it at that but I saw one host going above and beyond the call of duty when out for a late night stroll on the boat deck I saw a gentlemen host standing and two ladies on their knees in front of him . It was a cold night and I reckon he was frozen stiff !

250 people in 10 years not 1 year. Do you know 25 million people cruise every year? 25 million divided by 25 is 1 in 1 million. More people go missing in your own city in a year. Its statistically insignificant. The odds of dying in a car crash is 1 in 102, and a plane crash 1 in 205,552.

They get off at a port and never get back on or they jump ship at night if we have an overnight call at a port.

I should tell you the story of how I was hired as a musician on "The Love Boat". the Pacific Princess in 1997. and on the second week of my contract I missed the ship in Serento, Italy, and as far as I know am the only crew that stopped the ship and was tendered back to the ship and was not fired on the spot! I finished a year on that ship. Only one escapade with a passenger.

Crewmembers do sleep with guests. It's risky, but it happens a lot. Saying it doesn't happen is just a political correct statement to the company.
