On my first cruise I was stalked by a bar waiter. Actually showed up outside my cabin when I was leaving for dinner one night. Scared the beejebers out of me. I told my room steward that I didn't want to get him in trouble, but what do I do? The room steward spoke to him, my restaurant waiter talked to him....after that, I found out I wasn't the first/only girl traveling alone he stalked. So, RCCL fired him when we returned to NYC. One of the steel drum musicians heard me telling my mother (who came to pick me up) when I got back to NYC port & said, "Miss, don't feel bad for him. He did it to himself. You're a nice lady and you weren't the first. I talked to him over & over. Some people just don't listen. You can't teach them anything if they don't listen."

Wow, that's crazy! I had a stalker at my gym a few years ago. It's scary. People don't understand that when someone is showing up in your location and in your face a lot, it can creep you out big time! He finally confronted me one day and I explained to him that he was WAYYYY too young for me. And I didn't mention that he sounded CRAZY too. Do you think it stopped? nooooo... Stalkers be crae crae! I had a stalker once when I was a passenger on a ship (NCL-14 day cruise). It seemed like every where I went, he was there. Ends up he was friends with someone who gave him my info (cabin number, phone number, etc.). I told him straight up how I felt and he did back off. My friends kept telling me to report him but I felt bad, especially if he were to lose his job. I feel like most people will back off if you're honest up front, but unfortunately there's always that rare occasion. I feel like you just have to see how it progresses and act accordingly.

I am on board as a solo traveler and so do run into similar situations that you're referring to and I totally agree that the best response was just to talk to her directly. We had a guy in our solo group who we learned was looking for a lady with liquid assets, financial that is. He asked me about my relationship status and I've pretended it was just a general conversation and so eliminated all problems from there going forward without embarrassing him or putting him on the spot. One of the other ladies kind of flirted with him and led him on a bit and then complained that he seemed to be wanting more from her, but I think she shouldn't have done the flirting in the first place and I think that sort of thing got her in trouble in that respect. I. just think direct and honest is the best approach, but in a way that causes as little hurt or embarrassment as possible.

The whole solo traveler thing! I've been a mostly solo traveler for almost 25 years now. I used to think when I got "old", I wouldn't get uncomfortable attention, but that still happened to me two years ago. It was weird. I just think a few people think that because you travel solo that you are looking for a boyfriend or girlfriend. For myself, I'm happy to make friends with people who share my interests, but I do not want a friend for physical activities. It gets awkward when you really can't avoid running into people who make you feel uncomfortable. This is one reason, I prefer bigger ships. -- Jay handled his situation very well.

Man she started was rubbing up against me, just love dove me. She was from a different culture. I got real concern when she really started rubbing on me. I like that you did not want anything happening to her. I would see her out there smoking and I did not engage, just had my Lucky strike and would go back to the cabin. You can hear a male urinating and flushing when you are trying to sleep. The sink is at the foot of your bed. If you are tall, your feet will be in the sink. I'm having a stalking neighbor, considering moving away because of the guy. Finally found my dream flat 3 years ago after long time looking for something I really wanted. Moved in, imagined I'll be living here happily ever after. BUT. It came with a stalking neighbor, stalking me from day one but it took some time until I realized it. Now it feels like the guy is stalking all over my entire nerve system. I'm just drained. Since last week I'm starting it all over again, the process of looking for 'my dream flat' somewhere else.

OMG this is so true! I didn’t think I would have a problem because I was older than a lot of the crew, ha! This one guy kept coming by my station just to hang out, I was a Port Shopper, so like you Jay, had the run of the ship. It got so bad that the girl he was still seeing at the time comes crying to me pleading for me to tell him to leave me alone, 😂. He was cute but I did tell him I was involved with someone. I have to ask this; how close is working on a cruise like the old TV series The Love Boat?
I have to admit that's a funny analogy; working a cruise ship is like being in high school, college, the military and jail. I believe it.

I think that I need to see a cruise ship counselor, because I'm cruise ship crazy. Every time, the cruise ships doc in port, I find myself standing on the docs, drooling over the cruise ships, eyeing them and dreaming about what it would be like to be a statue and be attached to the bow of the ship....Imagine docking in exotic ports, sailing the ocean blue and seeing the stars in the night sky, what a great life this would be...Haaahh, haahh, haaahh!!!!

I think you did an excellent job of handling this. On one of our cruises, as a passenger, my mom and I had a stalker. It was really creepy. We first encountered him during breakfast in the main dining room. Then he wound up being on two of our excursions. Not sure how that happened, because we never mentioned anything about our excursions until AFTER we went. After the last excursion he was on with us, he started following us back to the ship trying to strike up a conversation. I try to be a very nice person, but by this time I was very uncomfortable, and gave him the cold shoulder. There were two lines to get back on the ship. As we were in line he was behind us, so we switched lines, and he followed. Luckily, when we got onboard, Mom and I were able to get away from him. We started to take the elevator (which I NEVER do), and when he got on, we quickly got off and the doors closed with him on it. I used the excuse of the elevator being way to crowded. We quickly raced to our room and stayed there for awhile. From then on, we would always see him, but had to play the dash game. It was very uncomfortable.

I almost went to work for A major Cruise company out of Miami in the late 1970s. They didn’t offer a contract I was to work in hospitality. I didn’t do it mainly because I got weirded out. A lot of people in the industry were also in the drug smuggling industry & at that time Miami was becoming a very dangerous place…so I went to work in Japan instead. That’s my cruise story. Your story is pretty much the way it is in any corporate environment. You seemed to have handled it properly. The one thing to understand is the cultural differences with the people you work with & there are many.
