    As a stroke patient, the "off" switch for Clonus is putting your heel on the ground. That's way easier than it sounds. That will stop the problem.

    Very helpful! My takeaways
    -
    1. Shifting weight onto the involved leg to ‘calm that tantrum child’ 😀
    2. Stretching /strengthening exercises with ankle dorsiflexion.
    3. Stay positive
    4. Remember neuroplasticity!

    With so many sequels that I have on my left side of my body after a stroke on my cerebellum, one of the main issues that I have is that my foot lands to fast on the ground and I have a hard time to lift my ankle from the ground and sometimes I am taking the step and my affected food is on the air, then I suddenly I lose my balance because I feel like a force pulled back so strong that I have to rely on my walking cane.

    Dr. Tara, again as per usual you are absolutely correct! I experienced clones after my stroke first occurred! Almost 14 years ago. Putting weight on the leg would stop this. Unfortunately my lack of proper stretching, aging, improper walking techniques, and perhaps loss of muscle strength, the clones has returned. In fact last year I had to return to utilize a raised extension for my toilet seat. As with most life lessons, I learn the hard way. Now with you great help, I am back on the road to recovery . Thank you young Lady for your selfless service and concern for others! Kind Christian regards Ron Padlo

    I had lots of clonus with lower extremities in early stage of recovery. Now six years after my stroke, I have clonus in my arm. Mostly I had it at night. So, I used to get up and walk a little then go back to bed. Sometimes, it happened all night long. As my affected muscles went on-line with brain it reduced. But, if i started using a muscles recently, it will still happen. Now i know not to get irritated by its occurrence.

    Clonus. Three things you look at cerebral palsy spinal cord damage, or multiple sclerosis. Doctors don’t generally like to look at contrast imaging of your brain. It stops all of the testing they don’t make money on it. You have to look at all underlying signs.

    I am eight months out from a double ischemic stroke, and have made far greater progress in recovery than anyone expected haven’t been told I would never walk again. Through a hell of a lot of hard work and I’m able to walk almost completely normal and have about 50% functional use of the arm recovered which brings me to my question about clueless: most everything I’m seeing on the subject focuses on the leg. Where I experience it is in my arm, in particular, when I try to reach out for a full extension of my arm, it will begin to shake in the rhythmic way that I believe is clueless, and not spasticity. I have two questions then:1. How can you determine the difference between lingering spasticity and clonus? And 2. Since my guess is that I’m experiencing clonus out of either my tricep or bicep, how should I address treating this?

  • @jayge26
    @jayge26 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had clonus on my left side (affected side) early on. Mostly from overuse or over stretching. I would stop and reposition and try again. Or try with the other foot. I did find stretching helped get rid of it. I dont get it much anymore.

  • @emmykinz9922
    @emmykinz9922 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Dr. Tara, this was a very interesting video! I only learned the other day that I have clonus. My orthotist found it when he was fitting me with my first set of AFO's. I think I've had it my whole life, because my legs have always done that bouncing twitch thing you showed at 3:35 when I'm sitting and I push up onto my toes.
    I've never had a stroke, nor do I have CP or MS, or any other neuromuscular disease. The only thing I can think of with regard to where it came from is that I was born three and a half months premature and suffered a brain bleed and repeated episodes of apnea, as well as requiring cannula oxygen for the first year after I was born. Could these kinds of things be enough to cause brain damage that leads to clonus?

  • @rebeccafinch9361
    @rebeccafinch9361 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have ankle clonus diagnosed by my physiatrist. When I went to the Wikipedia and the Internet to read about it I found several references the condition sometimes being caused by SSRIs and SNRIs. I was on both Sertraline and Trazadone. The Sertraline was prescribed because there was a study or two suggesting that it contributed to improved fine motor control recovery in stroke patients. The Trazadone has been presdribed for 20 or more years for sleep. I stopped taking the Serrtraline after a discussion with the doctor and the clonus went away completely with a week. I am thinking about trying to wean off the Trazadone because it has anticholinergic effects. Do you have any experience with this or comments?
