Prophets Weren't Psychics, They Were Covenant Enforcers

  • Most of what a prophet did in the Old Testament had nothing to do with End Times, as we think of End Times. A good portion of it had something to do with predictions for Israel, Judah, their enemies, that sort of thing. But that's sort of near-future prediction. But actually, most of what even Old Testament prophets did had nothing to do with predicting anything. It really wasn't their main job. Most of what a prophet preached about and wrote about was more along the lines of; "why has your believing loyalty failed?" Check this out!

@@ghostgate82 Not at all. He is someone who has seen a lot of people in bad situations and realized the truth in Gods word. But he isn't anything close to getting revelation or messages from God. He gets a lot wrong with interpreting scripture as he "imports" symbols from Jung and other outside sources and "super imposes" their meaning over scripture. You really cant do this with the bible. It might work in some very specific cased but usually the symbols in the bible are quite different and instead of exegesis to draw out the meaning you end up with eisegesis - which is "reading in" your own meaning.

I hear so many preaching about Jesus comparing himself to Jonah and they say Jonah did not die. They tend to also make it all about being inside the fish. I have to wonder have they even read the book. Jonah makes it clear he drowned and died before the fish picked him up... I haven't heard Mike preach about this yet I guess I will look up what Mike had to say about it.

I think the amazing thing I came to realize about prophets and particularly the "parables" or "sign acts" they performed is usually they were working on 2 levels concurrently. They were doing exactly what you say here. Focused on the current generations covenant failings and often punishement or repentance they would have to go through. But very often the way these were described or acted out served as future prophecy related to Christ. So you often have these weird synchronicities with the prophets using the current events and failings and turning them into shadows and types of the future events. EG King Davids psalm 22 is written about himself ..... but the spirit made this also serve as a future prophecy of Christ.
Or Abraham's entire life - he literally walks out or "role plays" the entire old testament with his family. His wife being given to the pharoah is symbolic of Israels time of slavery in egypt. His wife handed over to Abishek is prophetic of Israels Babylonian exile. Isaac on the mountain is prophecy of Christ. Its amazing how the prophets could juggle both current and future simultanesously. Its not an either or - its usually "and".

*Thats true. The ancient Hebrew had a word for this. Its completely skipping my memory slots right now but it basically means that Scriptures can touch multiple places in time and space or could have multiple applications at the same time. When I really realized this and begin seeing all throughout the Library of Biblical texts I was even more mind blown than I was before. I dont think Heiser or anyone else for that matter has even begin to realize how the Bible functions on a hyper-physical multiplicity of levels. Perhaps the glass is only 'fuzzy' because of our ability to see through it and not because of any 'fault' with the glass itself or due to any design of the glass.'*

Heiser is essentially proving women had an authoritative role approved by God. If a prophet's main job was to understand the law and hold people accountable and to speak truth publicly, then we know of a number of women who were empowered to speak. This completely undermines the logic of some who say a woman cannot utter anything in an assembly.

One thing that I find missing in this has to do with Jonah. His prophecy didn't come to pass, because when the people repented God relented. He simply preached that God would destroy Nineveh in 40 days, nothing more and nothing less. Some prophecy is conditional on the person's or nations response, but the prophet may not state that it is conditional. This is where knowing the heart of God comes into play.

I might add two things. The first one is Revelation 19:10 where we have "...for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy" which certainly gives us the understanding that "prophecy" is more than the foretelling of events. The other is the seriousness by which some prophets are dealt with which we see in Zechariah 13:3, "And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him

    • @taylorj.1628

@@saiyasho16 I want to make a slight correction, he does take it literally. Taking something literally means to take it as written or as the author intended it to be read. Tim posits that the author didn't intend Genesis 1-2:3 and 2:4-3:24 to serve at a journalistic or video camera version of events, but rather as an archetypal presentation of events. So by taking Genesis as largely archetypical he is taking it "literally" because he thinks the meaning the author is trying to convey is archetypal. Now you can argue what the author really intended, but you can't dance with the label of literal or non-literal.
Another point, even the staunchest "literalists" don't think that God created the universe in one single day even though that's what 2:4 says. They also don't think that man and woman become one flesh like a siamese twin (2:24) when they are joined in a relationship. Noone is truly a "literalist"

That is it right there. The main thing with a prophet, especially in the Old Testament, they were to be the mouth of God to the people of Israel. If a prophet tells the people "thus says the Lord", if that prophets words were contrary to what God had previously said, that prophet was put to death. To that end, being a prophet was a very serious thing and if you were called by God to serve as his prophet, you would likely be scared out of your mind, knowing that if God is about give a new revelation, you might want to run for the hills later, lest you be put to death. Rarely did the prophets say much about the future, or if they did, it was rarely very far into the future.

In order to understand the Old Testament, it is important to realize that there are two covenants. The covenant of the law and covenant of promise. Apostle Paul in the book of Galatians describes the difference between these two covenants.
    Galatians 4:22-31 KJVS
[22] For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. [23] But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. [24] Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. [25] For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. [26] But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. [27] For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband. [28] Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. [29] But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. [30] Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. [31] So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

I think covnant "describers" is better than "enforcers". The prophets often describe the covenant and those who have broken or invalidated the covenant. "Trampled it under foot" so to speak. The prophets warn us to repent and return to covenant relationship with God. Some do enforce of course....but they enforce the will of God and not the covenant . The covnant between man and God can be broken. This is within the will of God. God's will is to allow man to freely choose life or death....sanctification or sinfulness. Jesus was also a prophet or rather The Prophet. He pointed back to his Father’s commands, statutes and decrees. He didn’t come to abolish those commands. If he did then he would have been a false prophet. The Pharisees couldn’t find fault with him but they were doing their job by testing Jesus. Jesus came to fulfill the requirements of the law that separated us from the Father. Jesus didn’t come to obey so we could disobey. Even Paul said to disobey God’s law is sin and we shouldn’t sin. Do you remember reading where God tells them he wants his laws written on hearts of flesh and not stone?
I do believe he likens the law to a teacher for children. But then we jump to Jesus where he said to the law makers that they came up with laws they wouldn't lift a finger to do. They had so many laws by the time Jesus came on scene it was ridiculous and they were not from God. They were so caught up in trying to please God through the keeping of the law, and their traditions they missed the one who had been promised to them.

They never say or know that they are brought before The LORD as He sits on His Throne, like the Old Testament Prophets. They don't have a clue. They don't even preach. I think they have other gifts, like encouragement. I think they mean well and don't do any harm. The ones you must worry about are the ones who ironically do preach and promises you success, as they demand your Credit Card Number. @@thetruthchannel349 well it’s true. Matthew 22:40 says that on those two commandments hang both all of the law and the prophets. (Neither of them were commandments but more so summaries of the purpose of every law given to us.) what I take away from that is the responsibility of a prophet is and was to reiterate what God had told man when man falls into sin and forgets / rejects his ways. His ways has been and always will be his law clarified and provided to every believer (the body of Israel) in the Torah (the 1st 5 books of the Bible.)
I came from an evangelical upbringing, and my folks have always listened to all these “prophesiers” who only warn people of hard times or spiritual warfare. Unless one of them brings attention the sin of the people (which is unpopular) I don’t even believe they are worth listening to. You always hear them say turn back to God but without a whole lot of application. what does that look like? It looks like someone who both dwells on and lives out the law of God (Duet 6:8), because we acknowledge that he is our king and ruler. What law of God is not good? What law is unjust? Why should Christianity claim that some laws you no longer have to follow? Is that really what Jesus said? If Jesus is God, then he’s the person that gave us every one of those laws to begin with. To pick and choose is to reject portions of God’s word and it’s a slippery slope to living a life of lawlessness. (The message of the Antichrist.)

Preterism is the correct eschatological hermeneutic.
The Apostles all said their days were the last days and their time was the end time. The author of Revelation makes clear that it concerns things which "must shortly come to pass". Jesus said he would return within one generation and that some people within earshot of that declaration would live to see it happen. When pressed for details, he connected his coming to the siege and fall of Jerusalem, the destruction of the Temple and the diaspora, claiming those events were the fulfillment of all prophecy, while referring to the prophet Daniel. Daniel asked when his visions would be fulfilled and was told essentially,"a long time after you're dead, in like 500 years" which brings you to the first century.
Prophecy was written to and about the Jews and concerns their fate as a nation and as covenant people of God. That fate was sealed in A.D. 70.
