And so what you have here is Jesus saying, in effect, I'm going to take Satan's domain, where he lives, the Lord of the dead, and I'm going to turn it into his own tomb. I'm going to empty the place out. If you were faithful to Yahweh in the Old Testament, you're going to be delivered from death. MSH, your lectures on TH-cam have meant more to me than all my years sitting in pews before sermons. I hope you have a speedy recovery.
I've learned so much from Heiser, so I'm profoundly grateful as well, BUT, honestly, it's not that Heiser is so great, it is that your/our pastors/fathers/ministers, whatever you want to call them, or rather, whatever they want to be called, have been that bad.
As this nation falls away, and experiences the consequences of that falling away, the pastors of this nation will bear the guilt. People fall away because they are seeking the truth, and our nation's pastors have been deceived in seminaries, in Bible schools, in whatever institutions are set up to "educate" these men for their CRITICAL task.
People know they are not getting the truth in their churches. They are unmoved. The church today does not follow the model of a Biblical church. If it did, it wouldn't call itself a church in the first place. But a church is what they are, a circus. And good, honest people don't have time in their lives for any more circus, so they fall away, learning by implication that they're not good Christians, that they're not interested in Christ, that Christianity is false, empty. But that is deception. If they received the meat of Heiser, and teachers like him, the people wouldn't be falling away, they'd be flocking to these sufficiently educated teachers, just as we see the numbers of people who have flocked to Heiser's teachings here on youtube.

My understanding got heighten! Either people are worshipping the god of the Dead or the God of the Living. Take Buddhism - it's the god of the dead - why would people worship the god of the dead because they are dead and know not the God of the Living. Kind of profound even though I kind of knew this all along.

In the third chapter of the Gospel of John he repeatedly says that salvation is for "Whosoever will" believe on him and follow him. This clearly and unambiguously implies thar the "whosoever" is making a choice on their own. But with your limited "understanding given by God", you already know that. You cannot just pick a single sentence out of a 9 page speech and use it as a magic phrase for anything you want to describe entirely different things. You have to first figure out what it meant IN the speech. I presume you are referring to John 15:16. This is right in the middle of Jesus’ after dinner speech at the Last Supper right before his crucifixion to his twelve closest associates/disciples. In this sentence read in CONTEXT Jesus tells the apostles he has personally chosen them for a mission that is just about to begin. This is a commissioning speech. There were thousands of people who chose to come and follow Jesus and believe in him. Only the 12 were “chosen” to eat the Passover meal with him. Jesus is telling them that they are special. “you have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ORDAINED you.” This is the moment they went from being disciples (learners) to being Apostles (ambassadors). This verse is not talking about choosing rather than being chosen for salvation like the 3rd chapter of John was. It is about ordination. It is right there in the sentence. Everyone may choose to follow Jesus and be saved: John 3:16 “ For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that WHOSOVER BELIEVES in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” This is about being chosen by God for a specific purpose. Pastors and other spiritual leaders are supposed to be chosen and ordained by God not just decide they think it would be cool to be one. We do this completely wrong so I understand some of your confusion. Grow up and read what is really there.

I was 5 years of chronic illness! I was Semi Housebound, lost my health, job, finances and my fiance left me. I couldn't even look at electronic screen for 5 minutes, or hold a 10-minute conversation.

I subbed. I have a daughter that is a catastrophic result of bad medicine. She became a chronic invalid about 7 years ago and she is only 35.
That illness sounds very similar to what I've been experiencing for roughly the last 8 years, since I had experienced a seizure. Been completely housebound for most of those years. Can only manage to look at the screen if it's small and not flashy or constantly moving. Can't hold conversations because it bothers and fatigues my head and my thinking.
I'm in a deep pit, physical health wise.

I also have heard from Derek and Sharon Gilbert that Caesarea Philippi is located at the base of Mt. Hermon in Bashan where the Watchers came down in Genesis 6. This Mount was also the place of transfiguration; Jesus' declaration of war against the kingdom of darkness. I can only imagine the chaotic tizzy he sent the hordes of hell into on that day.

"On this rock" the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ being the Chief Cornerstone- the recognition of Jesus being the Christ, the Son of God - upon this faith He will build His Church.
Yea, that is the way I always read it. Jesus is refering to the revelation given to Peter as the rock. I really do not think Jesus is talking geography. It is all about the unseen realm, the revelation from the Father allowing Peter to see who Jesus is.

I find many things in Scripture to be that way.
The revelation given Peter is the sure foundation on which the Church is built and stands - a stronger than that of the adversary ("unable to withstand it").
His declaration at such a spiritually and historically significant location could be a way of flying a flag on enemy turf, reclaiming ground as it were.
Without a doubt, the most eye opening explanations of the scripture in my Bible. I've known for a long time, oddly enough, that it felt like something was missing in my Bible study life. Those Gates (looking ugly, pretty high, kind of damaged, very robust, rusty and made of some hard steel) I saw once in one of my visions while sleeping. And the crowd of literally desperate people with my father-in-law together standing before them (I reckon it must have been from the inside, in Hell). I was just observing not taking part in it. Couple months later he passed away being an atheist. I've been still praying to Jesus to save him out of there.
In the original Greek, Peter’s confession “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God” is the Rock upon which Jesus says He will build His Church.
Peter's confession meant nothing once Jesus was dead. The foundation of the church is the resurrection. Without it there is no church.

Thank you. I have been throughly trashed by some of my Roman Catholic brothers and sisters for suggesting that Petras is feminine and is referring to the altar of Pan.
You should be trashed because that is crazy and blasphemous. Jesus did not build his Church on the altar of Pan either literally or figuratively, Jesus built the Church on the Rock (Petra) of Peter's (Petros) or Rpcky's Declaration the Jesus is "the Messiah the son of the living God." This is the gospel. The church was not built on Peter.
Technicality : the Greek text for the word in Matt. 16:18 is πέτρᾳ not Πέτρας

Building a physical church on top of a pagan worship site was/is a sign of conquest over the pagan temple/religion. There were all kinds of idols at the Bashan site, regular Pagan Central of most gods of the time period.
So its very symbolic that Jesus would show up at the physical location to declare He will destroy them, His church will be victorious on the ruins of the fallen angels/little "g" gods. Jesus is not saying He is building a church around or on Peter. If that were the case then why walk 30 miles just to tell Peter that??
@@Baltic_Hammer6162 Hammer, 1) You can see from the pictures of the site that nobody built a physical church building on that site. It is a big bare outcrop with a cave at its base.
2) Although Jesus was a carpenter, there is no record of him building any physical church buildings anywhere, but I was trying to rule that out in responding to the original posters of this thread.
3) So we are clearly talking about the Church as an organization, not a building. The Christian Church was NEVER headquartered in Caesarea Philippi.
4) Mat 16:15-20, is the passage in Question. Jesus mentions two “Rocks” in v 18: He nicknames Simon as Peter or in Greek Petros (little Rock) and a big Rock, Petra in Greek, upon which he would build his church. Peter is NOT the foundation upon which Christianity was built. Jesus was. Jesus is the BIG ROCK, not Peter (little rock) and certainly not the cave of Pan which is a hole was not a rock much less the Rock. Peter had just given voice to the Gospel, the foundation of Christianity, that Jesus who had just asked who they thought he was is the Messiah of the Old Testament and the Son of the living God. Paul uses the exact same Building/foundation metaphor in I Cor 3:11 where Jesus is the only foundation of the Church upon which it is built. Peter said Jesus was the Rock, the Foundation or corner stone in I Peter 2:7-8. Jesus had already used this metaphor of building in Mat 7:24-27. It is blasphemous to take a metaphor Jesus consistently applied to himself and apply it in the same passage to pagan gods and then say the Church was built on a foundation of pagan gods.
5) Almost nothing Michael Heiser said in this video was true. Pan is an unimportant half goat field god, not the Greek God of the Dead, which was Hades, hence the term Gates of Hades. Pan’s cave would not be the entrance to Hell. Baal was the biggest Canaanite male god to the Female Ashtoreth, like Zeus and Hera. Baal was not the Canaanite god or the dead, Mot was. Jesus was in Caesarea Philippi, but there is nothing anywhere to say he was standing at or near Pan’s cave or that Pan’s cave was the Gates of Hades. There were lots of “Gates of Hades” in the in the world of that time, mostly in Greece. Bashan was not a particularly evil or haunted spot. It was a large area, the grazing land of the half tribe of Manassah (part of Joseph) on the east side of Jordan in what we today call the Kingdom of Jordan.
6) The only thing Heiser was right about was that prevailing over the Gates of Hades/Sheol, the grave, was an obvious reference to the coming resurrection of the dead. Someday, Jesus will force the grave to give up its dead. But save for Jesus himself that has not happened yet.
7) There is no indication that Jesus walked 30 miles to see the Gates of Hell, either. He asked the question when he felt like asking the question. There were shrines to idols all over Palestine.
8) There is absolutely no mention of fallen angels anywhere near this passage or event.

I never knew the location of that talk. But I did learn that Jesus was saying upon this fact, this rock-solid fact that I'm the Son of God. I will build my church. And the Church will invade and take over hell. Liberating all the people under the chains of the Law. Jesus often used visual cues to identify with His Words. If today the church would know and understand this better we would have a better world.

The Lord was not speaking literally of “the rock” and it’s pure conjecture that they were at the Grotto of Pan. In Matthew 7:24 the Lord spoke using the same word (with the article, too) metaphorically as well - “Therefore everyone who hears me: these words, and does them, I will compare him to a prudent man, who built his house upon the rock.”
In saying "you are Peter/Rock [Πέτρος] and upon this the rock [πέτρᾳ] I will build my church" metaphorically the Lord was saying: You are (the)"rock/foundation stone," you and upon what you just said* (the bedrock) I will build my Church.
*Matt 16:16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Commentary of St. John Chrysostom [c. 347 AD - September 14, 40) : And pursuing the metaphor of the rock, it is rightly said to him [Peter] as follows: “And upon this the rock I will build my Church.” That is, on this faith and confession I will build my Church. Herein showing that many should beleeve what Peter had confessed, and raising his understanding, and making him His shepherd.

The Most Holy God holds no one from His Mercies. Through Jesus making Himself a sacrifice brought the Mercies of God to all His children who had fallen away unto death.

That interpretation makes no sense and it leaves the "you are peter" segment of the verse entirely unexplained. Imagine just telling someone "You are Edward and on this rock I'm considering building a hotel". What was the point of me saying you are Edward? No reason at all. But the Greek word for Rock is Petros, whence the name Peter. So Jesus saying "You are Peter, and on this Rock I will build my church" has an obvious meaning in the original Greek. You are rock, and on this rock I will build my church.
@@TedBruckner Jesus was speaking Aramaic not Greek - he changed Simons name to Cephas. Matthew translated the Aramaic to Greek for his audience and so any interpretation based on gender differences of the Greek petros and petra is not correct because that’s done purely because of the Greek language. Jesus said “You are Rock and on this Rock I will build my church” Rock being Cephas which is Simons new name - and name changes are no small thing in Judaism - it usually indicates a form of promise.

Before getting to the point, since you share knowledge, back to you : were you aware that in the time period of the Lord’s Incarnation, that there were a couple of synagogues in Jerusalem holding sanctioned services in Greek? It’s so.
And that the People rarely read scripture in Hebrew outside the Temple, synagogues, and yeshivas/Torah (& tradition) schools but were using their “Peoples Bible's (which we call the “Septuagint”) ?

And literal interpretation of the text “upon this the rock I will build my Church.” The Lord was not speaking literally of “the rock.” The Lord was referring metaphorically to Peter’s utterance (verse 16 Matthew 16) “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” In Matthew 7:24 the Lord spoke using the same word metaphorically as well - “Therefore everyone who hears me: these words, and does them, I will compare him to a prudent man, who built his house upon the rock.”

In saying "you are Peter/Rock [Πέτρος] and upon this the rock [πέτρᾳ] I will build my church" metaphorically the Lord was saying: You are (the)" (solid) rock/foundation stone," you and what you just said* (the bedrock) I will build my Church upon.

Herein showing that many should beleeve what Peter had confessed, and raising his understanding, and making him His shepherd.
I agree he misses it with the word play on Kephas/Petros. But I agree with him that they were likely at Pan's Grotto when Jesus said this. If they weren't physically standing there, it was certainly in their minds nonetheless. What the guy misses is that Caesarea Philippi was known in the ancient world as (one of a couple sites known as) the Gates of Hades. But it wasn't because of what someone might find if they went in the cave, or something. The natural landscape was different there then than it is now. A natural spring burst out either right there or very close by, and the pool in the grotto (according to Josephus) was so deep that no one had ever discerned the bottom -- it was quite a notable, and somewhat famous, sight and place. Many hold that the celebrations of Pan would be held there to celebrate the bursting forth of the host of Hades back into the world after the winter's symbolic death.
So the argument here is (counterintuitively to us) that the idea of the gates of Hades here was not defensive, like armored gates. But rather the idea that Jesus takes up in this metaphor is that these gates are (to us) more like those that swing open at the beginning of a race. Things burst out, rather than trying to get in. So, yes, Jesus is referring to a struggle, a competition. But that competition is more like a race than a pitched battle. Jesus is saying that the bursting forth of the forces of Hades here will not be able to compete with the bursting forth of His church.
True, Jesus does use the metaphor of the rock as a form of stability. But both the depth of the pool inside the rock at Caesarea Philippi and the associated spring bursting forth are necessary parts of this metaphor. Stability, depth, and life are necessary components for the fullness of the metaphor -- and what He was saying about the Church.
I'll argue this is one of the most misunderstood passages of the New Testament.

No commentary from the Church Fathers associated the story in Matthew 16 with Pan's Grotto.
It's plain creepy to imagine them going there. To think they would even go there is wack.
