HOW TO TURN A FAILED FOOD PLOT INTO A BUCK MAGNET THIS FALL

- In this video I discuss what I do to turn around a food plot that was planted in the spring but failed. I planted 3 small food plots to soybeans on a woodland dominated area with no agriculture or food plots around, not surprisingly the soybean plot was quickly over grazed. I am getting ready to sew my no till fall plots of annual clovers, turnips, radishes, cereal rye and winter wheat.

I planted joint vetch earlier this summer for the first time. I just top sowed it and prayed for rain. We got some rain initially and it germinated but then we went into a drought and it all died. big failure. Luckily I still have some good weeds the deer like to browse on in the field. I think this is a good example why I use clethodim herbicide to spray fields. it kills the unwanted/useless grasses but leaves the native browse plants like ragweed and poke weed. its kind of like a fall back incase the food plot fails that there is at least some beneficial plants in the fields. Now I'm going to wait until about September to top sow some clovers in the standing vegetation and spray the grasses with clethodim which wont hurt the clovers. as soon as the first frost comes then all the weeds will die. I found this works surprisingly well with little effort. No disking just top sowing crimson clover and then spraying. I like to top sow before spraying because the seeds get to the soil easier. after spraying everything will start to lay down and its harder to get the seeds to the soil with the dead thatch layer. the dead vegetation on top of the seeds helps protect them well.

I purchased soybeans for spring planting but never planted because we got hit by a wicked drought. I'm thinking of using the soybeans as part of a fall food plot mix. Looking forward to your videos on fall planting.

This is exactly what I am dealing with Wes. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us. I just finished watching this. I'm going to follow your protocol as well. I planted soy beans 7 weeks ago and it has been consumed with weeds even though I sprayed the day I planted. I'm going to drill in more beans instead of broadcasting them this time and spray again the same day. I tilled and broadcast the last time. Moving forward I plan to broadcast spread brassica in late Aug here in Ohio. Hopefully I'll be broadcasting in to a nice lush stand of beans.

Plot Professor to the rescue!! Summer food plots seem to always be (or have) problems while fall plots are usually enjoyable. So it's getting to my favorite planting time of year. Only thing I regularly do when planting the small seed for fall is to wait about 30 days to put down the cereal rye or wheat so it doesn't begin to outgrow and smother out the small seeds. Waiting 30 days is the same time I put down the extra nitrogen over the fall plot so I do 2 jobs at one time.
There are ways to make summer food plots Bullet proof, it just takes a lot of work.
I usually do the same thing with the cereal grains, always recommend planting them later…..but this year I wanted to plant some tiny plots with cereal grains same time as the clover and brassicas to see what would happen. My hope is the deer will keep them browsed down in these small secluded plots, my fear is the cereal grains grow so much early that they loose there attractiveness to whitetails in the fall and winter months. We will find out soon enough, and try to learn something. Thanks for watching

Nice video Wes. What is your preferred ratio of seed in your fall concoction? Do you any other annual clover other than crimson?
Great question George! I am also planting frosty berseem with the crimson in a couple of the well drained sites. On the lowland sites I’ll be adding some balsana, and frosty berseem in with the crimson. The turnips and radishes will all get 1 LB each, then the crimson will get 12 LBS, 2LBS frosty, and 4 LBS balsana. Thanks for watching

Would a fall pea and bean plot grow without working the ground in this situation? Or should I just do oats and rye?
It would if you got perfect conditions with good heavy rain, followed by 2-3 days of cooler temps and moist conditions . As you start getting into the bigger seeds, it gets much more critical to have a perfect weather event after seeding. Not saying it can’t be done, but it will add some difficulty to it. @DIYfoodplotpro I will probably stick with small seeds then, we have clay ground here in central MN. I like to do half green and half brassicas. I did a summer bean plot but the deer kept it short so the soil is pretty hard
I’d stick with the small seeds then unless perfect conditions come in and you’ve got several days of good rain chances.
Ive got that exact scenario and plan going into the fall. This being my third year with brassicas on a certain field I think I'm gonna leave them out this year and add some winter peas. What's your preference on WW, WR or oats?
Buck forage oats are hands down my favorite of the 3. Cereal rye would be 2nd and winter wheat is 3rd. But buck forage oats are also extremely expensive….i plant the majority of my plots in cereal rye….its cheap, easy, and does fairly well at pulling whitetails in. I planted clover last week in one plot and a oat blend mix in another. Each plot is 1 acre. We have had no rain since planting even though the forecast said we would. It’s been a week and no rain forecasted the next 10 days in Pennsylvania. I was going to water my seed but now I am wondering if that’s a good idea or just let the seed lay dormant until it rains. What do you think? Thank you in advance
Unless you have a huge water source and lots and lots of time, I would not start watering the plot. Once you start watering you are kind of forced to continue. The seed is still viable right now, if it was me I’d wait for the rains to return. Good luck and thanks for watching

Wess mix Rapeseed Canola with the Ratishes and Turnips and you will have a much more attactive plot. The Canola will help pull the deer off the ratishes.
