Teaches your everything you need to know about planting food plots on your farms for whitetail deer. I have a bachelor of science in Agronomy (plant and soil science), I farm full time, and have a 1800 acre whitetail deer hunting outfitter in western KY where baiting is not allowed. I rely on food plots to successfully harvest mature whitetails every year, and I’m brining y’all along with me. In depth details that are critical to making your food plot a success.

HOW TO KILL YOUR TARGET BUCK IN THE OCTOBER LULL PRE RUT HD 1080p
In this video I go over how and where to setup in order to harvest your target buck during the October lull. During the summer bucks are easily patterned on summer food sources such as soybeans, alfalfa, clover, and other legumes. However during the pre rut phase in October, food becomes less important as bucks are traveling and laying down their sign for the rut, making sightings very sporadic over food plots. During the pre rut phase, hunting transitional cover close to bedding is a great area to hunt; that mature bucks feel comfortable using during the daylight hours. bow hunting

In this video I go over using mock scrapes as areas to get mature deer into bow hunting range. I tried mock scrapes and licking branches for years and had very few deer come to them much less use them. However last year I did a huge experiment across the 1800 acres of deer hunting farms using mock scrapes and had fantastic results. In the video I share with you the proven methods setting up the...
HOW TO KEEP BIG BUCKS ON UR FARM DURING THE DEER HUNTING SEASON

In this video I go over how to keep bucks on your farm during the deer hunting season and what I think plays into the fall shift where bucks leave their summer ranges and transition to fall areas. During the antler growing season bucks look areas with wide open timber and quality nutrition nearby, but in the fall their ranges often shift to thick cover where they can escape hunting pressure and...

HOW MUCH CAN GO WRONG IN 1 FOOD PLOT??? FIRST PLOT IS PLANTED!!!1
Im in central Missouri and not much crop land near me. I planted 2 of my plots in purple top turnips and the deer are hammering it. I was hoping to have the plots growing good until December, but I had to go back and plant wheat and clover to hopefully save them. Deer around me must not have enough other stuff to eat. Any suggestions for what I should plant next year?
Those fall food plots deer really hammer because of the young tender growth. Especially on years where the white oak acorns aren’t dropping. I like annual clovers, turnips and radishes and cereal grains as fall plot. Thanks for watching
What is the yield per acre? Thanks for the info.
Never looked at it from a yield standpoint but it holds up to high browse pressure on my farm. Thanks for watching

I think we're a couple weeks behind you here in se ok. Seems like they stay on food until the middle of October when are acorn start dropping here.
Acorns are dropping early this yr cause we been so dry here in KY!
Yes sir, around here they seem to stay somewhat patterned untill middle to the end of September. Usually in October they are breaking up and doing a lot of moving around. Thanks for watching
Acorns are starting to drop at my place in Macintosh county
@@ew1421 I’m in Seminole County and didn’t notice any - wasn’t really looking though….good luck.

Good information here Wes. Have a safe and successful season. It's time for all the hard work the rest of the year to pay off
Yes sir!! It sure is!! Thanks for watching and good luck
Early season in KY can be problematic because of chiggers and ticks. I was out two weeks ago and got chewed up. I'm afraid to go back out until the first frost.
Yes sir, they can be pretty bad but they can be worth it to punch your tag on a giant early in the year. Thanks for watching

@@DIYfoodplotpro Every year...no luck whatsoever. Rumor has it someone claiming to be a "hunter" (on a area behind me) just got a 180"+ buck. So those October lull bucks taken by all the people using your advice only leaves me with a few fork horns and spikety bucks. smh....
I guess they got that 180 in the September early seasons. There is no question that is an easier time to get them patterned!
@@DIYfoodplotpro or as some of the talk going around whether it was taken by questionable means???
oh man, I hope it was taken legally and in the correct season that was in. I haven’t heard of this deer yet
You are lucky. Had a zillion acorns last year and a billion again this year. Worse a storm came through and knocked them all down. Luckily I tagged out Sat, opening morning.
It’s amazing how many above average acorn crops we have had in the last 5 years. Congratulations on the success!!

Wes......we have used mock scrapes with a licking vine VERY successfully for about 10 years. We put them up and shovel and rake the ground bare and then pee in them. We install a stand within 20 yards downwind. We don't put up a lot of scrapes on field edges as we did years ago. They were unsuccessful, we were thinking it would hold deer on our property. It was unsuccessful for us and I believe fewer scrapes with good stand placement is a MUCH more successful strategy. We get a tremendous amount of activity on our scrapes, but we do continue to "freshen them." Quietly rake them up and pee in the when we are in the area. We don't put any gel on them as we prefer to only have the natural sent from the deer on them. We place the end of the vine about waist high to chest, no higher. As you said Wes we attach a vine with a zip tie to a rope across where trails interest or from a branch. We set them on or near a well used trail, as we have found it difficult to pull the deer off the trail. This is just what has worked over the years for us in pursuing mature bucks. Bob
Bob thanks for sharing the great tips, I completely agree with you. They are definitely a benefit to have on a hunting farm. Thanks for watching
Good information Wes. I use mock scrapes and last year shot my buck as he was working one. I've always made them without any added scent, just place them in a well worn trail and the deer do the rest. This year I am trying Branch Butter after my neighbor showed me pics of bucks reacting to it from his farm. His farm is only a mile away but he has much more activity on the Branch Butter than I have. Currently my scrapes with no scent added are doing as well or better than the treated ones.
Very interesting mark, let me know the final results of this experiment! I like it! Thanks for watching
You don't need to add anything to a mock scrape, deer will come to it naturally. Just wasting $$
That’s just what has worked well for me in the past. Thanks for watching
Thanks for all the great videos! I have found there is no need for putting any scent on the vine or in the scrape of a mock scrape. When the deer start using it they leave their own preorbital scent on the vine. They will continue using it all year long once it gets established. You are absolutely correct that the mock scrape has to be in the right place to get used. I place them right next to trails. It also helps if the vine is hung so a buck can work 360 degrees around it.
Thanks for sharing your experiences, I really appreciate that! I agree once they start using it there is no need to put anymore on it, but for me it helps to get them to start using it. Thanks for watching!
Wes where do you find the branch butter ?? been trying to find aq orbital gland set..
I ordered from Amazon as my Tractor supply was sold out
I ordered mine a couple of years ago online…I honestly can’t even remember where I bought it!
Wes, been doing mock scrapes for 30+ years. One IMPORTANT factor is::, do them in shaded cover. They very best scrapes will usually have moist soil. Field edge/ sun baked scrapes are hit_ miss.
Dave that’s great information and thank you for sharing!! Thanks for watching
I use mock scrapes unscented and the deer naturally hit them and use their own scent on them everything from young fawns to bucks have hit them
That’s great! Once established and they are constantly using them I don’t think it’d necessary to put anymore on. It’s more of a get it started kinda thing for me. Thanks for watching
Thanks for the great tips Wes! I am definitely going to try the branch butter!!
Yes sir, I think it helps them to key in on those mock scrapes and start using them! Thanks for watching
Thanks Wes

Ok Plot Professor...this begs the question...what do you think it takes to make your hunting property the place where a big mature buck COMES TO instead of leaving and going elsewhere? What does it take to actually be the ELSEWHERE those bucks come to? Any thoughts??
Extremely thick cover, thats what it boils down to, food, sanctuary all play roles but cover is the key in my opinion
👍
Thanks for watching
As much as we would love to hold those fall travelers, it’s natures way of spreading genetics and stoping inbreeding. Best case scenario is you make a home like what you described and have the young pushed out yearlings from other places make your property their home range in the fall.
Right on !!
Thanks Roy, I also think it comes down to each individual buck, some are travelers and some are home bodies and never move during the fall months. Or at least that is what I’ve seen on the farms. Thanks for watching
What do you think of goldenrod fields for fall cover?
Any cover is better than nothing, but generally i like cover that has woody browse, something that is massively overlooked when setting up farms. Deer will certainly bed in those types of areas, but without the woody browse it’s less attractive. Also important is how that fields hold up during winter, as we’ve all seen those fields that look great during the summer time then during the winter it all falls down and there is no cover for the deer.
@@DIYfoodplotpro Thanks for the reply.

I agree with everthing you said. The changes in 3 years of cutting and my little kill plot plantings in ag country is night and day. Unfortunately my wife is a dang tree hugger, and i pay hell every time she here's the saw! Lol
Haha I understand! I could definitely see to somewhat not familiar with the benefits it would look like we were harming the woods! Just got doing the sawing when she isn’t around. Hahaha
We tried to put out food plots out but it was just too dry. Western KY has bigger bucks so that's got to be the soil.
There is no doubt soil plays a direct correlation in antler growth, but there have also been many giants fall in eastern KY over the years.
This is exactly what is happening with the property that I hunt in south east ky
It happens to a ton of farms across the country, hopefully the new bucks will show up soon! Thanks for watching
Plant Triticale, Soybeans, Swamp White Oak and Persimmon trees. Suppress Coyote before Fawning season. Provide Water source with a gravel skirt and a covered mineral salt block. Salt blocks will increase animal health and often results in increased twinning of fawns.
Consider installing a Screech Owl nest box. Owls eat rodents that host ticks, attract and feed pit vipers, Bobcats and Coyotes. Due to Forestry Management practices there are not enough quality nesting cavities for Screech Owls. Screech Owls mostly eat Deer mice and White-footed Forest mice just like Copperhead snakes.

I watched this video two weeks ago and took Wes's advice so I was prepared when I planted last week. I took a 3 inch pump and a two inch ag rain gun and I pump about 20,000 gallons on 3/4 acre field. I'm going to do it again tomorrow. It's a lot of work but even with 100 degrees days here in Oklahoma it's already coming up and looking good. Thanks for the advice.

101 degrees today ... middle of September. Headed to the ranch to start irrigating my food plots before they burn up.

Thanks for the info! Where I'm planning to do a field, it's mostly grass and goat weed. Dove love to eat the goat weed seeds! As long as the sunflowers get a head start, they should grow great and might have some goat weed mixed in.
Yes sunflowers are great at competing with other plants, like you said give them a head start and they will typically outgrow most of the competition. Good luck with the plots and thanks for watching

Hey Wes, got a question for ya man, is there anyway I could send ya some pictures of our property and you take a Quick Look at it maybe throw me a tip or two looking to tag a monster this year he made it threw from last year after he out smarted me last year
If you bought a no till drill would you buy one like the one you used in this video or is there another brand you like better ?
I really liked that hay buster no till drill that I used in the video. It was super nice, and I really like that it wasn’t a 3 point drill (meaning the tractor didn’t pick up the entire drill) While those would be super handy for getting into tight places…on rolling ground keeping the seed at a consistent depth can be a challenge. I also have experience with Great Plains and they are very good drills as well. I don’t have experience with some of the “food plotter drills”. Thanks for watching
It’s Clark’s River Whitetails.

I thought that the uptake percentage was much higher with liquid therefore you didn’t need nearly as much? Is that a bunch of crap or what?
I don’t mind liquid fertilizers for micro nutrients where the quantity needed is a small amount of lbs per acre. However nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are macro nutrients and are needed in large quantities, for these it’s best to stick with granular to get large amounts needed. Thanks for watching
Wes...as usual GREAT comments. I actually learned this years ago when my mother-in-law passed and I was very very late in planting some of my food plots. I still decided to plant the soybeans in a few fields anyway, even though I was convinced they would be a disaster. Guess what, when all my neighbors beans were dry pure brown mine were young and green.......and the deer were HAMMERING them. As you said don't expect any pods, but who needs them when they have all that preferred green food. Needless to say we had a great season, and lead us to try Eagle Forage Beans over 15 years ago with great success. We still do well every year planting "late" beans, not for bean production, but for GREAT forage. Many of the success I have had over the last 30 years have been made by either stupidly, accident, dumb luck, or lessons from studying what the deer prefer...not what I "think" they prefer. I have been very blessed with the experiences I have enjoyed in my journey pursuing mature whitetails. Thanks, your friend Bob
Bob, thanks for sharing your experience, you’ve clearly got the food plots figured out!! Those late beans can be absolutely killer in the fall! Appreciate you watching!
So later on (a month)you are just throwing on top of the ground the rye, wheat or oats and that large of a seed will germinate without any disking or tillage?
Yes sir it will. You can definitely put them in the ground now and will be okay, but yes you can also come back and just broadcast them on top of the ground.they will germinate on top of the ground, those cereal grains are extremely tough!
Yes I did and thanks for asking, I got decent germ I no tilled just over an acre. I think this maybe the last year for no till you need so much rain to get going, it’s safer to just till the ground. I have reseeded radish four times. Thanks again
Bad drought up here in Michigan. Plots are burning up. No rain in sight. We will be lucky to have enough time for Rye to get up and grow.
Sorry to hear that, drought is one of the things we can’t control and boy it’s sure frustrating when it’s not going in our favor. Hope you get some good soaking rains soon! Thanks for watching
