Damn fine and brilliant. Lots of info and a bit of humour!!! Thats the best way to learn. In the class and then in situ. Fantastic. You are a good teacher, I very much appreciate your lecture.
Great info thanks Sean, l have built one 3m x4m mini greenhouse using plastic conduit...you are right. One storm and it was flattened. Bought a steel framed one 2years ago, but there was inadequate fabric to bury underground. Plastic was also loose, cheap chinese stuff, zippers on doors (l kid you not), it lasted a season, got shredded in a few storms. Now l want to cover it in shadenetting, looks like l must dredge up some sewing skills😂
Very brilliant ideas Please tell me, if the temperature in my place reach to 38-40 degree celsius in summer. This tunnel would be ok for vegies with your 7x30 meter polytunnel type?
You mentioned the shade percentage and colour. I'd be interested in hearing the details on which to chose. I've got about 800m² of mostly fig trees that need a new net, and best I can tell is that I need 20% white.
@@LivingseedsFarm The previous owner had bird netting over the trees, but that stuff's broken within a year or two. I thought that the shade netting solves the bird problem, lasts forever, and also benefits the trees.
Just checking, are your winds you get on the farm also 65km/h or 13m/s? Our farm is high up and gets strong winds. I want to do my homework before I invest in my tunnel.
Ek is so spyt ek het nie julle tonnels gekyk toe ek daar was so twee maande gelede nie. Hoe maak julle die plastiek aan die pale vas? Ek hoor die vrou het gevra, toe het julle gesê 3 keer se vasmaak om elke paal. Ek sien ook daar lê n draad op die tonnel... net duidelikheid hieroor asb.?
The clour of the netting does not influence the percentage of shade it provides. It's the tightness of the weave that influences the shade percentage. The colour of the netting, might, however, influence the temperature underneath the shade netting.

What is the tunnel wide on the inside... from pole to pole when it is already installed? My laaste vraag, dan kan ek mos toue laat afhang in die binnekant vir die rankplante in die tonnel soos julle op n video gewys het.
There are various forms, this is one type. A wet wall is a porous wall that is wetted typically from the top. The wall is “filled” with charcoal or similar. A fan is installed to suck air out of the greenhouse. Air coming into the greenhouse to balance the air pressure is drawn in via the wet wall thereby cooling the greenhouse.
Can't understand when you were asked what gauge the wire was, that you decided not to answer the question and make a fool of the gentleman. Maybe that's how you get your kicks? I call this behaviour morose
Bud. Maybe you don’t understand South African humor. In no way was that intended as an insult or an attack. It was as Afrikaners say ‘’n Boer maak ‘n plan’ when it comes to wire gauge. Farmers make things work when townies scratch their heads. If it works it works, because we make it work.
Observation. He keeps saying buying an paying for installation. Just learn how to do stuff and do it yourself, no need to buy a kit, it's simple manual labor. If someone can't learn or figure out how to design and build from the ground up, then they would be best served in never considering farming at all. 20% of farming is building and fixing things.
This is what the Government should be sponsoring to educate aspiring young farmers for future food security. Excellent video

They actually do. NCRS is a good resource

Great video. Thank you for so much info. Where can I source the 7.2m pipes?
They are a special pre-order. They must be ordered in a bundle (~92 units)
We buy from Staalbeer.

Yes it is. We have been hitting 40°C on the regular.
I Looooove your VIDEO....very insightful
Thank you so much.
You got a Sub, well detailed lecture Sir. Do you have an online course on growing tomatoes?
Nope not yet. Will do one in the next 2 months.
Would be great to see a practical footage about the step of stapling plastic and shading net together, i mean the one that precedes the sewing step.
Plans can be made.
I’ll try do one next week for you.

You need the one that defuses light, it’s grey or aluminium on the inside! You could get away with 30% shading
What are you looking to achieve?
20% white is 6% shade.

We get exceptionally heavy winds, enough to flatten walls … well built ones.
I have not measured them however.
Look at 32mm pipe with a 2mm wall.
@@LivingseedsFarm ok thanx. I will look into that.
thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Hi Sean. Why do you see more desease under all netting, than all plastic? I would have thought it would be the other way around?
The wind and rain carries disease. The netting increases humidity and allows the spores to develop.
Good! 👍
Thank you.
Hello, how do you cover the ends of the tunnel
We use a 25mm class 6 pipe about 30cm long with a slit down the length, it makes a great clamp.
Ek is so spyt ek het nie julle tonnels gekyk toe ek daar was so twee maande gelede nie. Hoe maak julle die plastiek aan die pale vas? Ek hoor die vrou het gevra, toe het julle gesê 3 keer se vasmaak om elke paal. Ek sien ook daar lê n draad op die tonnel... net duidelikheid hieroor asb.?
The plastic is not attached to the poles in any way except for the end where we use class 6 pipe cut into sections to hold the plastic to the pipe.
The net % you use on the bottom slips of the greenhouse, is it also 80% or are we looking at 50%?
We use between 40 and 80%. The % is really not important unless you are needing to exclude pollinators.
@LivingseedsFarm then I will go for 50%, because I want green and Alnet only have green in 50%. Thanks for your advice.
@@LivingseedsFarm then I will go for 50%, because I want green and Alnet only have green in 50%. Thanks for your advice.
Is there a chart available with the different colours, percentage shade and actual shade?
The clour of the netting does not influence the percentage of shade it provides. It's the tightness of the weave that influences the shade percentage. The colour of the netting, might, however, influence the temperature underneath the shade netting.
Will post a guide up.
The colour does affect the %.

We use a 180 micron diffused film.
Available at your local greenhouse supply.
In South Africa Green Zone is probably one of the better suppliers.

5m wide is the maximum, we use a 4m wide opening.

yeah 140k rand is 123k aud. They are $2-5k in Australia for a large one.
Great
Thank you bud.
Good day can one use HDPE pipe instead of steel pipe
Nope. We have not found any long lasting plastic alternatives.
What is the size of the trampoline?
My trampoline size is 8ft
3.5 - 4m diameter is perfect.
Hi where can we buy the Steel Tube ?
We buy from Staalbeer, however for the 7.2 m lengths you need to buy a bundle of around 92 lengths at a time.
What is the diameter/ size of the trampoline??
3.4m
Nice

If you are running 6 high tunnels that is a low number.

How much does the plastic used here cost in total if you had to estimate the price
It’s sold by the sqm. I don’t have the price off the top of my head, I’ll look it up for you on Monday.
a 30x8m tunnel is about R70k without any amendments, lights, ventilation and sprayers etc..
