2023 for the $ the 10 speed Advent X shifter paired with the Acolyte derailleur working the Advent X 11-48T cassette is less that $120 shipped. Acolyte has same pull ratio as Shimano and Microshift 9-11 speed derailleurs. Both these mfg have evenly spaced cogs that's important. No need 12 speed upgrades.
I didn’t know the acolyte had a long enough cage to work with a 48t cassette let alone a advent x shifter. I haven’t tried it! I thought the pull ratio was different between shimano and microshift. Thanks for info, I’ll need to experiment
I did a 1x9 drop bar 9spd mountain bike. Shimano 105 brake/shifters, cross bar levers, Sunrace M9 derailleur, Sunrace 9 speed 50t cassette, 10 speed DuraAce chain, WolfTooth 38t narrow wide chain ring. This setup is so much better than the 3x9 road bike drivetrain I was running.
Update on my box four: after about 3 months of use, the derailleur bolt system broke (the bolt somehow got driven out of its socket in the derailleur), the derailleur also lost almost all movement in the cage extension which essentially made it as bad as a clutchless system, the pulleys wore VERY highly, stronger and faster then any set of pulleys I’ve ever worn, the “super strong and wide” 8 speed chain wore AND caused much more wear to my chainring then any other chain I’ve ever used. Most importantly: cassette somehow broke into pieces (42t cog separating from the rest) and caused EXTREME damage to my freehub body. The cogs, which were no longer structurally connected because the pins somehow broke, essentially ATE through my freehub body and twisted. I had to use a rubber mallet to remove the cassette. Also I’ve had issues with my other prime 9 drivetrain (Two-E) which had the shifter break twice (once the lever snapped, once the cable tensioning device in the shifter lost spring tension), and my derailleur for that drivetrain also has massive issues with retraction of the cage. Overall, as much as I loved it while it worked, don’t buy it. I rode hardcore enduro stuff with the 8 speed because I thought the wider chain and smaller amount of gears would make it more reliable. I also raced a very harsh race, the China Peak Enduro in California with this drivetrain, I really felt disadvantage but the lack of cage movement and the fact that the limited-slip clutch didn’t do me much good.
Wow, that’s terrible! Sorry you had all those issues. Hopefully It was rare but it sounds like you have experience with the other prime systems. Darn, well thanks for sharing your experience! Take care
Michael04 why would I lie about that? And although you’d think they are durable offering thin cogs on the same 9 speed platform that existed a decade ago, my experience hasn’t been that at all. I have had two Box Four derailleurs and two Box Four cassettes replaced (I still have my second replacements and will sell them). I also have broken 2 Box Two-E shifters although they only replaced one, and a thread stripped on a Box Two-E derailleur for which I am still pending a warranty claim and have been talking to the people at Box back and forth for over 2 months, at one point having my email left on read for over 3 weeks before getting a response.
Great review of all 3 drivetrain systems. I am using the Microshift Advent 9-speed on my Husky MC-5 eMTB and the 9-speed system is prefect for eMTB use. I was going to try Sunrace M9 9-speed system on my sons eMTB, but after you review I am going to stick with the Advent system:)
Thanks for your comment. Yeah, nothing wrong with the sunrace other than the the cheap shifter. I tend to lean towards microshift as of late for budget drivetrain options.
A good point to note is that the Sunrace is the only of then that is compatible with Shimano shifters, so it will work with 7s to 9v Shimano MTB shifters and also work with most Shimano road STIs from 7s to 10s. So it is nice to mount a budget 1x gravel bike.
Biking Roots I liked your forks comparison also. I have a Hawk Hill 3 that I don’t mess with too much but, I always have an older bike laying around that I like to tinker with so these videos are great for budget upgrade ideas!
Sweet, love the HH3! Yeah not much to do there. Cool, yeah it can be fun to breath new life into bikes, much cheaper and easier than cars! Appreciate the support
Great video i have the Box Four Drivetrain Love it All is needed in south Louisiana And glad to see someone that thinks like me Bigger is heavier Defeating the purpose of being bigger is my thought The 11-42 tooth is more than enough with its weight of 16 ounces
Great series, wish more channels did budget minded bike builds and such. I have no problem spending money on components but I do enjoy a great value. I have eagle on my Fuel EX and have wanted to try prime 9. I am looking more into Box two hoping the quality is on par or better then NX eagle.
Thanks for your comment and glad you liked the video! Nice, yeah I haven’t tried the Box two yet but it looks pretty nice. I did install a box 3 on a customer’s bike and it was nice too. I have a Microshift Advent X 10 speed system in a box that I will be trying soon that appears to be great value and performance
Good review of all three. And yes in Houston there is not a need for more than 8 gears. Come over to San Antonio or the hill country and you will definitely want to have them.
Oh does it? I'm not familiar with that bike but a lot of other brands are now releasing their bikes with Microshift Advent products which is nice to see. I think it is a great alternative to Shimano and SRAM.
i like how the screws are more accessible and they are not as recessed as most derailleurs.Too bad there isn't a kit to replace them. I bought a long B screw from wolf tooth that had a hex end, but then i wipe out and bent it. lol wow special chain and it dropped. i think the shifter is a big deal. i wonder how the box 9 speed works. I have a real old 8 speed that i would like to go 9, or at least bigger ring. Here on the north shore our hills are steep!
Thanks for your comment, sorry for the b limit screw! Yeah for me the shifter can be a big deal but maybe it is because I’ve had the higher end stuff and like it 😀 . Chain drop could have been my issue and would need more testing and adjusting before I’d say it is an issue. I installed the 9 speed system and it was nice, similar feel to the 8 speed system but just a bit higher quality.
Oh good, yeah I recently installed a box 3 system and it was very comparable to the four but overall just a bit nicer quality and more range. Another person commented you could adjust the clutch as well so if so that’s a plus.
@@BikingRoots good to know! I think this solidified my decision on the microshift Advent. Seems to be the best to factor range, price, and clutch engagement.
I’m sure it would works since it is much smaller than the max spec but it would just have a long cage hanging down (which isn’t needed on a 34t cassette) but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Good luck!
@@BikingRoots ok thanks I was asking because were I live there is more downhill than uphill and a 11-34t cassette is better for me also with the 2x drivetrain I get almost the same range as a 1x 11-40. Also I was wondering if you can do a video about this. 1x vs 2x drivetrain?
Hi sorry for the delay. If you do more downhill riding than yeah depending on your frame design, you would then want to focus on your top end ratios (smallest cog in the back, biggest in the front). I usually use a 32t up front but you could potentially go to bigger 34t or 36t 1x drivetrain. Or do the 2x. I personally am not a fan of them (just one more thing to adjust and think about). But everyone’s preference and situation is different
Thanks, that makes sense. It did seem tough and I guess if it works than it doesn’t matter too much. I guess I’m used to having an easier way to turn it on and off
Works fine! Still have it on that bike actually and have used it a few more times without issue. I prefer the Microshift system personally, but Box makes some cool stuff if you can find it

$200 is a very sweet spot for affordable drivetrains: you get all that you get in this tier, plus nicer clutches (Box Three can even be adjusted) and cassettes between 46T and 50T in the back for better range with 9/10 speeds, it'd be great to see those in some entry level bikes.
Would you consider this Box groupset a upgrade compared to a Shimano Altus 8-speed group set? Because I currently have and actually just installed the Altus 8-speed cassette, derailleur and shifter 2 days ago. But when I went to my LBS they told me they had this Box group set in stock, so I am thinking of purchasing it next week.
Thanks for your comment and questions. Yes, the Box 8 speed is an upgrade because for one you have a clutch which keeps your chain tight and quiet as you go over rocks and roots. Also, the box has a longer cage which means you can run a bigger cassette in the back so you can run a 1x setup up front. I think the Altus derailleurs usually can only go up to like a 36T cassette. If you plan on keeping the bike a while and want to put some cash into it, go with the Box
If I remember right there isn’t a release like on other brands. I think you just push it hard (like on SRAM Eagle stuff) but unlike SRAM I don’t think there is a button to lock it open to make it easier to take the wheel on and off.
@@BikingRoots 👌🤣it's a chore to drop out the rear wheel, on the box four i couldn't find a clutch lever, they should've kept the 2020 vitus nucleus set up, I don't rate box four groupset at all, not as smooth as shimano setups, also the indexing may be different on the gear lever, so i would need to change it all🤔

Yup it is if you can find one in stock. Another option to consider is the Microshift Acolyte. I’m about to do a mini review on that one as well. It’s been out for a bit but also a great 8 speed option with a clutch. Good luck
Hey Evan I’m planning a work trip to Houston soon and I was wondering if u tent out bikes ? I’d rather rent then bring my bike all the way from Dallas. Thanks
If you got into biking too late and couldn't get a deal on a Shimano Zee 10 speed setup, or you have a cheap hub that will only go up to 8 speed, I suppose it's okay.
Yeah, a Zee would be a great option but yeah they tend to be hard to get as of late and a lot more expensive then these setups. You just need to price it out and see which works best for your budget and setup.
what u reccomend to replace my POS sram sx eagle 12 speed, brand new focus raven square ebike. Overshift misshifts driving me fuking crazy, 2 bikeshops cannot get it dialed out. I dont even need 12 speed or stupid 51 tooth. With ebike power it flies up climbs in middle of cassette. I basically ride it like single speed as SX is that fuking clunky. 10 speed 46 - 11 would be plenty.
Yeah I agree, you don’t need that range. Microshift now has a 9 speed 46T. I’ve had some issues with SX on a few bikes. You may just need a GX shifter or derailleur though to get it dialed in a little more exact and should be cheaper than a whole new system, but I can understand if you just want to be done with Eagle on the ebike. My ebike has a 10-speed Deore system and it isn’t perfect but more reliable than lower end SRAM
@@BikingRoots Thanks for info, I don't know why bike manufactures are sticking SX on everything, it such a bad product. Even when dialled in it overshifts in the lower middle of the cogs, forcing me to shift back up again. It is so bad. I had the trigger shifter jam up too cause a spring inside came loose. It is plastic junk. You can hear the clunk of the shift a mile away! The clutch is very tight and cannot be adjusted in SX.
on my full suspension i replaced the 36T with a 42T in the back. It is a 2x, with a 22T small and my climb ratio is sick and it shifts great. So far the front shifting is new, so i won't go 1x on that bike for awhile. I have a 3x on my old bike, with a middle chain ring i replaced last year, so i will prob just leave the front. It's nice having the 22T small on the 3x, i had upgraded my cassette from a 28T to a 32T and it is a nice ratio too, but the front shifting is old and i don't like it. Big cog is nice for road though, for some speed. Thx for your video. How do front chainrings work? Can i a 9s chain on the middle chain ring that was originally on my 8s? So change the rear cassette and shifter, change the chain to a 9s, will the chainrings still work? I have no idea ;-) thx.

Biking Roots thanks😉
If you got into biking too late and couldn't get a deal on a Shimano Zee 10 speed setup, or you have a cheap hub that will only go up to 8 speed, I suppose it's okay.
Yeah, a Zee would be a great option but yeah they tend to be hard to get as of late and a lot more expensive then these setups. You just need to price it out and see which works best for your budget and setup.
@@BikingRoots I'd best sell my old bike for parts and hold onto my spare Zee derailleur then. 🤣
Ha! Yeah maybe!
what u reccomend to replace my POS sram sx eagle 12 speed, brand new focus raven square ebike.
The sprinter in the background?
Good guess, but nope! There is a sprinter repair company behind our shop so we see sprinters a lot 😀
Is compatible with shifter shimano 8 speed?
Haven’t tried it yet. Microshift and Box both say no, but would have to test it to see if it is possible with their actuation ratio
nice video bro
Thanks!
on my full suspension i replaced the 36T with a 42T in the back.
You should be fine on that chainring going to the 9
Mazdaspeed 3? If so those are unicorns with supercharger
Yup it has been a fun little turbo car. I never modified it but I know many like to. Wish I could hang onto it
Would you do a trade for the Mazda?
No sorry, actually already bought something 😀 just need to sell it now, thanks!
yay
